Conservatives were horrified by the slaughter of Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte train, but the murder of Charlie Kirk came so soon after that some fear Zarutska, and the liberal ethos that led to her death, will be forgotten.

If we go back another week or two, we come to a third horror that briefly dominated the headlines but now is absent from them, except locally: Robin Westman’s attack on Annunciation School in Minneapolis. We are reminded of that crime by the funeral for a ten-year-old victim that was held yesterday.

A newly introduced bill threatens to punish judges who refuse to impose tough sentences on dangerous criminals.

The legislation, called the JAIL Act and introduced Friday by Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., comes in response to the killing of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska.

Zarutska was allegedly murdered by Decarlos Brown Jr., a career criminal with a lengthy rap sheet who had repeatedly avoided serious jail time.

U.S. authorities are warning of a new synthetic opioid from China that can be up to 50 times more potent than fentanyl.

Nitazenes pose an emerging threat as they are more resistant to naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. They are often mixed with other drugs and delivered in the form of counterfeit pills mimicking drugs such as Xanax or Percocet, according to authorities.

Frank Tarentino, who heads the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) New York Division, said that the presence of nitazenes coming from China has been increasingly prevalent on the illicit drug scene.

“Here in the United States, we have found it in heroin, methamphetamine, in some cases fentanyl, and more alarmingly, we have now seen it pressed into pills,” he said in a Sept. 10 interview with NTD, The Epoch Times’ sister media outlet.

“What we have seen is that these cartels, these transnational criminal organizations that are operating on a global scale, are intentionally lacing their drugs with fentanyl and now nitazenes to increase the high, to increase the addiction, to make more money.”

Tarantino said that traffickers are selling counterfeit prescription drugs such as oxycodone on the streets, online, or on social media. He warned that the only safe place to buy prescription drugs is through a legitimate pharmacy.

On Saturday the singer, real name Pascal Robinson-Foster, told the crowd: “I wanna dedicate this next one to an absolute piece of s— of a human being. The pronouns was/were.”

“Cos if you chat s—, you will get banged,” he continued.

He then made a gun symbol with his hands, and fans in the 1,500-strong crowd cheered. “Rest in p—, Charlie Kirk, you piece of s—,” he screamed in front of a large Palestine flag.

The duo was also accused of attempting to incite a pogrom, with Robinson-Foster leading the crowd in another chant of “death, death to the IDF”.

The De Telegraaf newspaper reported that the singer then shouted: “F— the fascists, f— the Zionists. Go find them in the streets.”

A massive homeless encampment in Koreatown has grown into what neighbors describe as a “city” of its own — complete with a tennis court, garden, barbecue pit, and even illegally rigged electricity, according to the NY Post.

“The reason why people are sleeping here is because you leaders are sleeping on not taking initiative and action to clean this place up,” resident Daniel King told ABC7.

New data shows that 64 percent of violent robberies, physical and sexual violence on public transport in Paris are committed by foreigners, with 43 percent of this number being North African, who represent only 3.4 percent of the population.

The data, from the French agency INSEE, as reported by Fdesouche, also shows that in 2024, overall in France, foreigners committed 41 percent of violent robberies, physical and sexual violence on public transport. Nineteen percent of these crimes were committed by North Africans.

The foreign population in France is equivalent to 5.2 million people, or 7.7 percent of the total population. Of this number, 44.4 percent are from Africa.

These statistics do not break down information based on race or ethnicity, as France does not track such information. France also does not track the migration background of French citizens. Any foreigner who has since become a French citizen is tracked in the statistics as French.

The U.S. Department of Education has stopped awarding grants to colleges based on the share of minority students they enroll, saying it is unconstitutional to use taxpayer dollars to promote “racial or ethnic quotas” at those schools.

Unless you live under a rock, you will jnow by now that conservative activist Charlie Kirk (31) was shot dead while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

At the time of writing, the shooter is still at large and a manhunt is underway.

Kirk was an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative student movement.

In a statement, Trump blamed the rhetoric of the “radical left” for Kirk’s death while politicians on both sides of the aisle shared their condolences.

The shooting adds to a growing list of incidents of politically-motivated violence in the United States, with echoes of an incident last year when Trump was also nearly shot at a rally in front of a crowd.

Despite the major rift that exists between left and right, data shows that such acts of political violence are not tolerated by the vast majority of U.S. adults.

For much of the past century, in both the United States and elsewhere, the inexorable trend has been for people to move from rural areas and towns to ever larger cities, particularly those with vibrant downtown cores such as New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and dozens of other iconic American cities. Most visions of the future still view urban cores as the uncontested centers of production, consumption, and culture, with rural areas, small cities, and suburbs relegated to the backwaters of modernity.

A RealClearInvestigations analysis has found that we may be on the cusp of a new era. Urban cores have started to shrink, losing first to the suburbs, then to ever further exurbs, and now to small towns and even rural areas. For the first time since the 19th century, America’s growth pattern favors smaller metros – Fargo, North Dakota, as opposed to Portland, Oregon – many of which once seemed out of favor.

This transformation can be hard to detect because demographers often discuss metropolitan regions, which put city centers at their cores. But this method of classification masks the trend that much of the growth is at the edges of these areas. In virtually all the fastest-growing metros, it has been the further-out exurbs, themselves until recently rural areas, that have experienced most of the expansion. While Raleigh, North Carolina – a sleepy state capital for much of its history – continues to draw migrants from across the country, the most explosive growth is not occurring in the city center but the surrounding “countrypolitan” towns of Apex, Fuquay-Varina, and Zebulon that offer land and a relaxed rural environment along with access to modern amenities.

Between 2010 and 2020, the suburbs and exurbs of the major metropolitan areas gained 2 million net domestic migrants, while the urban core counties lost 2.7 million. The pandemic, which normalized remote work and encouraged people to keep their distance, turbocharged this movement to smaller, less crowded, less expensive housing markets. Through the first four years of this decade, the urban core counties of the major metropolitan areas (over 1,000,000 population) lost 3,259,000 net domestic migrants, three times the rate of loss in the last decade. In contrast, 2.3 million net domestic migrants moved outside the major metros.

A federal appeals court ordered Vermont to let a Christian school compete in state-sponsored sports events—even though the school doesn’t support the state’s view of “transgender” ideology.

That decision allows the school to finally participate in athletics again after suffering a yearslong ban for forfeiting a game that would have forced girls on its team to compete against a male playing on the opposing girls’ team.

In an opinion released Tuesday, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held that state officials likely “displayed hostility toward the school’s religious beliefs” by banning it, and it instructed Vermont to let the school compete while the case continues.

Later this month, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk will issue a report calling for massive reparations from the West for the alleged harms wrought by colonialism. It will be the culmination of a long-gestating effort within the U.N. and by Third World nations to squeeze money and demand other goodies from former colonial powers in the name of “reparatory justice.”

In addition to being historically ill-informed, the effort is racist. What began as a simple extortion effort has since been supercharged into an all-out assault on European cultures. Since being appointed in 2022, Türk has transformed his office. It now issues daily muezzin calls for uncontrolled mass migration to the West and the erasure of white cultures. His report should cause Western nations to abandon every U.N. agency that pursues this sick agenda.

The genesis of the colonial reparations movement (and the adjacent slavery reparations movement) that Türk is building on began as a fringe cause among Western Marxists in the 1970s. It was taken up by African nations following the first major conference on the topic in Lagos in 1990. The U.N. joined the chorus in the 2000s. It mustered political support for a renewed “Big Push” of development aid to Africa (most former colonial Asian nations want nothing to do with this backward agenda). The clamor grew by merging with the “racial justice” movement that erupted in the 2010s, reaching its crescendo on the streets of Minneapolis in 2020. “Behind today’s racial violence, systemic racism and discriminatory policing lies the failure to acknowledge and confront the legacy of the slave trade and colonialism,” Türk’s predecessor said at an “urgent” U.N. meeting at the time.

The Bouches-du-Rhône juvenile court sentenced two men to long prison terms for the rape of an 18-year-old woman near the SNCF train station in Aix-en-Provence in December 2021.

“It’s a brutal rape par excellence,” said the victim’s lawyer, Maud Bertrand, to Le Figaro.

The court handed Mohamed Annabi, a 29-year-old Algerian, a 17-year sentence that includes a two-thirds security period, a permanent ban from French territory, and registration in the FIJAIS (automated judicial file for perpetrators of sexual or violent offenses). His accomplice, Amen-Allah Handiri, a 20-year-old Tunisian who was 17 at the time of the crime, received 15 years.

The attack took place on one December night in 2021. Around 3 a.m., the victim, referred to as Anissa, left the Shakespeare Club on Place Ramus. Walking home alone, she was approached by the two men, then aged 17 and 25, who spoke to her in Arabic. Sensing their pursuit, Anissa called her boyfriend in an attempt to scare them off. “Stop, I don’t know you!” her boyfriend shouted through the phone, before hearing crying and then silence.

Utah Department of Public Safety official Beau Mason and FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls briefed reporters with new details on the political assassination of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk and the ongoing manhunt for the suspect who remains at large. Separate from the press conference, the Wall Street Journal confirmed (following an initial report by Steven Crowder) that the “older-model .30 caliber hunting rifle” used in the assassination contained “ammunition engraved with expressions of transgender and antifascist ideology inside the rifle.” Additional details about the weapon will be provided at the end of this note.

The FBI also has “good video footage of this individual,” and the bureau has “tracked his movements,” FBI agent Bohls told reporters.

In the immediate aftermath of conservative influencer and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot in the neck at Utah Valley University, MSNBC’s Katy Tur disgustingly took to her eponymous show and smeared him for his politics. She was also joined by vile former Republican strategist Matthew Dowd, who also attacked Kirk while his life was dangling by a thread.

While playing video of the panicked crowd scattering after the shot was fired, Tur diabolically described Kirk as “a divisive figure, polarizing, lightning rod. Whatever term you want to use.”

She then seemingly asked MSNBC political Allen Smith “why” someone would want Kirk dead. “One of MAGA’s most prominent voices online. He hosts a near-daily podcast. He opines on almost everything. He’s been very closely aligned with the President since his initial run for office in 2015-2015,” he said.

My brother-in-law, who uses X (as I do not) sent me an entire page of leftoid tweets saying things like “Do Matt Walsh next!” and “Do Trump next!” and “Keep up the good work!”. Which only goes to show that the political violence in America these days comes from the Left, not from the Right.

Perhaps this will be the “9/11” event that convinces the Right to quit playing by the rules while the Left ignores them and does whatever it likes. We’ll see. But I think it will get very ugly very soon.

American high-school seniors’ scores on major math and reading tests fell to their lowest levels on record, according to results released Tuesday by the U.S. Education Department.

Twelfth-graders’ average math score was the worst since the current test began in 2005, and reading was below any point since that assessment started in 1992. The share of 12th-graders who were proficient slid by 2 percentage points between 2019 and 2024—to 35% in reading and 22% in math.

There also were drops in the proportion of students who were able to reach at least a basic level of performance, a tier below proficiency.

The results are from tests that are part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, administered to tens of thousands of students in early 2024.

A new push by states to tax the real estate of the wealthy has sparked a backlash among brokers and potential buyers, who say the taxes punish the most important local spenders.

From tax hikes on pricey second homes in Rhode Island and Montana to Cape Cod’s proposed transfer tax on homes over $2 million and the L.A. mansion tax, state and local governments see a revenue gold mine in the pricey properties of the wealthy.

Democrats never see a dollar without hatching some scheme using the power of the State to steal it.

“It’s a smack in the face to people who just spend money here,” said Donna Krueger-Simmons, sales agent with Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

And deliberately so. Democrats think that if you have more money than they do, you must have stolen it from someone like them.

The tax hikes are being driven by tighter state budgets and populist anger over housing costs. States are looking to offset budget cuts expected from the new tax and spending bill in Washington. At the same time, the housing market has become a tale of two buyers, with the middle class and younger families struggling to afford homes while the luxury housing market thrives from wealthy all-cash buyers.

France and Spain have overtaken Germany as the top destinations for asylum seekers in the EU, new figures show.

By June 2025, France had received 78,000 asylum applications, Spain 77,000, and Germany 70,000—ending Germany’s long run as the main destination in Europe.

Venezuela is now the leading country of origin for asylum seekers, with nearly 49,000 requests—up by almost a third from last year. Martin Wagner from the International Centre for Migration Policy Development linked the surge to the Trump administration’s tougher immigration rules in the United States, prompting more Venezuelans to look to Europe instead.

Because Venezuelans can enter the EU without a visa and stay for 90 days, many apply for asylum only after arriving in Europe, Wagner noted.

The FBI is investigating a suspected Chinese cyber campaign in which hackers impersonated Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., the chair of the House committee on U.S.-China competition, in emails sent to trade groups, law firms, and government agencies ahead of high-stakes trade talks with Beijing.

“We will not be intimidated,” Moolenaar wrote in a statement to The Wall Street Journal.

The emails, which appeared to come from a nongovernment address, sought input on draft sanctions legislation and contained malware linked to APT41, a hacking group believed to work with China’s Ministry of State Security, sources told the Journal.

Moral: Don’t use e-mail for official stuff.

Having lived in Australia for the past three years, I sense that this country is the least advanced down the road towards the multicultural dystopia confronting much of Europe.

That is not to say there is room for complacency: Australia has its own canaries in the coal mine, echoing trends observable across the Western world. Yet relative prosperity, firm immigration policies, a distinct welfare regime (mandatory health insurance, means tested pensions), a robust federal system, and above all a unique electoral framework of three-year cycles and compulsory voting all help, willy-nilly, to keep politicians on a short leash and broadly tethered to the popular will.

The greatest safeguard against social fracture and disintegration in Australia, however, is not institutional design but rather watching Britain implode in real time. Many Australians, still bound by ties of kinship and tradition to the old country, see in the United Kingdom both a cautionary tale and an anti-role model: a once-settled, relatively harmonious state busily teaching the world how to dismantle itself through the enthusiastic embrace of liberal dogma.

Six years after California legalized marijuana, the bodies keep piling up. Earlier this year, six men were murdered in the Mojave desert. Four of the Latino men had been burned after being shot with rifles. In 2020, seven people were killed at an illegal pot operation in Riverside County.

Violence like this was supposed to disappear after legalization. Legalization advocates argued that making the drug trade legal would end the grip of the cartels. Instead the legal market has failed and the cartels are taking over sizable parts of California and the rest of the country.

California’s legal drug revenues have fallen consistently as have those in other legal drug states including Colorado whose model helped sell the idea that drug money would fix everything.

Despite falling revenues, Colorado legislators brag about $282 million in drug revenue. That number may sound high, but it’s a drop in the bucket considering the money that the state and cities like Denver are spending on homelessness, drug overdoses and law enforcement.

News broke yesterday that a jet carrying European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen had to land using paper charts after its GPS navigation systems were apparently jammed by Russia. Traveling to Plovdiv in Bulgaria, VDL’s jet apparently circled for an hour before the pilot took the decision to do things the old-fashioned way and consult the map.

Such an incident targeting a head of not-quite-a-state is shocking to say the least, but serves as a neat metaphor for relations between Russia and Europe in recent years (decades?): European liberal internationalists assume old norms apply -> Russia disagrees and demonstrates that it views violence as a legitimate tool of national policy -> Europeans left stunned.

Some will remember the images of German diplomats guffawing at the United Nations in 2018 as Donald Trump admonished Germany for placing itself at the mercy of Russia for its energy supplies. Fast-forward to 2022 and suddenly Trump’s speech wasn’t so funny, and anyone who cares to bring up a chart of German industrial production can see the fruits of the lack of imagination of Germany’s leaders. Germany’s factories are now struggling to replace lost production for civilian applications with new production for military applications. But how to do this without cheap energy?

So, yes, violence is back as a tool of national policy. Russia is unapologetic about this. So is Israel. So is the United States if you consider the decisiveness of using B-21 bombers to drop bunker busters on Iranian nuclear facilities. Hamas and the Houthis are certainly unapologetic and China has also been stepping up the frequency and scale of ‘rehearsals’ for the invasion of Taiwan while the Chinese navy and coast guard have had semi-regular clashes with the Philippines over territories that China claims as its own through the ten-dash line. Those Chinese territorial claims are not supported by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, but that is really part of the point.

The Chattering Class in the U.S. is spending its time running around in circles and jumping up and down about the supposed ‘authoritarianism’ of Donald Trump, in the meanwhile ignoring the actual authoritarian regimes in Russian and China. This will not end well.

As an older millennial, my high school and college summers were defined largely by the jobs I held. Not many of today’s teens can say the same.

Once a rite of passage, teen jobs are now endangered. Just 35% of 16- to 19-year-olds worked last summer, down from 54% in 2000.

It’s a big deal.

My only purpose in working as a teen was to earn as much money as possible. But I now realize the experience and life lessons those jobs provided were far more valuable.

Low-wage, entry-level jobs provide the perfect opportunity for young people to learn the importance of key skills: showing up on time, getting along with co-workers, demonstrating respect and kindness toward customers who may lack both, and staying on task even when it is difficult or boring.

Learning these skills early has long-run benefits. Multiple studies link part-time work during high school to higher future wages and occupational status, and more consistent employment.

Yes, the company can certainly grow into some of that overvaluation, but most likely not all of it..

Another group remains unyielding to Michael Saylor, who heads up the one flailing company of MicroStrategy, which has been rebranded to just “Strategy,” to signify its new course of converting the company into a leveraged play on bitcoin. He regularly encourages his base with memes to further promote his leverage strategy. His followers congregate on Reddit and X under tags like “Irresponsibly?Long?$MSTR,” which tells you these investors have also disregarded fundamentals, like a 210x price-to-sales ratio, in favor of a “story.”

These are not investment conversations; they are fandom rituals.

An epidemic of juvenile violent crimes endures. Why? The law presumes juveniles are intellectually and psychologically too immature to appreciate the wrongfulness of their violent ways and deserve leniency. But to borrow from Mr. Bumble in “Oliver Twist,” “If the law supposes that, the law is a ass—a idiot.”

Violent juveniles have what Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. characterized as the “bad man’s view of the law.” The justice elaborated, “If you want to know the law and nothing else, you must look at it as a bad man, who cares only for the material consequences which such knowledge enables him to predict.” From the bad man’s vantage point, the law is reduced to “prophecies of what courts will do in fact.”

Violent, recidivist juveniles are a crime wave unto themselves. Their recidivism is fueled by law enforcement indulgence: pretrial diversion, rehabilitation fantasies, probation or reform school. They know how to game the system. They migrate to jurisdictions notorious for leniency. Word of mouth among juveniles travels at warp speed. Adult gangs recruit juveniles to do their dirty work, knowing that law enforcement will look the other way or concoct excuses for juvenile crime.
