The makers of TurboTax have long been luring customers into paying for a service that they promised the government they’d give away for free. Now they’re lying to customers to avoid giving refunds.
We’ve heard from 16 people who say they were denied refunds and told that the truly free version — Free File — is a government product that’s not run by TurboTax. Ten others reported being told that ProPublica’s stories were inaccurate, or that our coverage is “fake news” or “fictitious.”
None of that is true.

In my previous life, I was a self-righteous social justice crusader. I would use my mid-sized Twitter and Facebook platforms to signal my wokeness on topics such as LGBT rights, rape culture, and racial injustice. Many of the opinions I held then are still opinions that I hold today. But I now realize that my social-media hyperactivity was, in reality, doing more harm than good.

I am so old, I actually remember when Chappaquiddick happened. Some years later, I looked into the facts and found that they are quite clear: Senator Ted Kennedy, then 37 years old, drove his car off a bridge and saved himself, leaving a young woman to die, when she could have been rescued if he had simply called for help like a normal human being. Instead, he tried to convince his cousin to take the fall and, failing that, lawyered up. Ted Kennedy is not history’s most contemptible man, but he is easily in the bottom one percent.

One week after troubled ex-Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh resigned after a criminal probe over her children’s book series, the entire Baltimore City computer network system was shut down after a ransomware attack, The Baltimore Sun reports. Across the city, multiple intergovernmental agencies sent employees home Tuesday after email servers and communications platforms went dark. And according to a press meeting on Wednesday morning, the city’s communication system remains down.

Soros cleverly — and smartly — has concluded that one of the most effective vehicles through which to accomplish this ambitious goal, is to fund left-leaning candidates for the one elected office that perhaps more than any other is able to change the fundamental values by which communities function — the local district attorney or “D.A.” While Soros’ crusade to implement this plan has not met with success in every instance, his victories in just the past four years have been significant.

Dennis Prager is worried.
Left-wing thugs engage in violence and threats of violence with utter impunity. They shut down speakers at colleges; block highways, bridges, and airport terminals; take over college buildings and offices; occupy state capitols; and terrorize individuals at their homes.
In order to understand why more violence might be coming, it is essential to understand that left-wing mobs are almost never stopped, arrested, or punished. Colleges do nothing to stop them, and civil authorities do nothing to stop them on campuses or anywhere else. Police are reduced to spectators as they watch left-wing gangs loot stores, smash business and car windows, and even take over state capitols (as in Madison, Wisc.).
It’s beginning to dawn on many Americans that some mayors, police chiefs, and college presidents have no interest in stopping this violence. Left-wing officials sympathize with the lawbreakers; and the police, who rarely sympathize with thugs of any ideology, are ordered to do nothing by emasculated police chiefs. Consequently, given the abdication by all these authorities of their role to protect the public, some members of the public will inevitably decide that they will protect themselves and others.

Just as I finished my breakfast here at Burger King and was checking around the ‘net, Professor Glenn Reynolds called attention to the latest outrage from the Thought Police at Google: The Claremont Institute has been banned for “wrongthink,” as Ryan Williams explains:
What Google is really doing (like Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms) is policing the terms of American political debate to advance acceptable establishment ideology. In First Amendment parlance, Google is in the viewpoint discrimination business, and its target is heresies like ours against the prevailing orthodoxies of our time.
Indeed. Google, like the mainstream media establishment, has decided that President Trump’s election proves that freedom of speech is dangerous, and so anything that might conceivably prevent the election of a Democrat in 2020 must be suppressed as some form of “hate speech.” Remember that Google “blacklisted” The American Spectator last month, and of course I got banned from Twitter in 2016, so this increasingly totalitarian regime of online Thought Police affects me directly. As I have explained (“How Disagreement Became ‘Hate’,” March 18), the tactic of labeling conservatives as proponents of “hate” is being used by the Left in an effort to shift the Overton Window leftward.

If you think about it, anyone wanting to hold political office should be disqualified on that basis alone, as no normal decent person should want to hold political office in a democracy. Therefore, the first job of the politician is to convince you he is not morally unfit. To do that he tells you the thing you most want to hear about politics. You are right and your opponents are morally wrong.
This feature of democracy is why such systems are quickly overwhelmed by sociopaths and dangerously unbalanced lunatics. Nature is pretty clear on this. You get more of what you select for and less of what you select against. Any system that benefits the pathological liar over the honest will inevitably be dominated by the former at the expense of the latter. Strangely, this is why the Right in America is so easily fooled into supporting that which is against their interests. They are the honest in a game of liars.

Few places on earth are better suited for middle-class prosperity than Australia. From early in its history, when it was a refuge for British convicts, the vast, resource-rich country has provided an ideal environment for upward mobility, from the pioneering ranches of the nineteenth century to the middle-class suburbs of the late twentieth. Journalist Donald Horne described Australia in 1964 as “a lucky country run mainly by second-rate people who share its luck.”
Over the last decade, though, Australia’s luck has changed, as the country develops many of the pathologies of crowded, socially divided societies like the United Kingdom or the United States. Despite being highly dependent on resource sales to China—largely coal, gas, oil, and iron ore—Australia has embraced green domestic politics more associated with Manhattan liberals or Silicon Valley oligarchs than the prototypical unpretentious Aussie, often someone dependent on resource-based industries. The result: a dramatic reversal of the middle-class uplift that so long defined Australian society.

Today is International Workers’ Day, a holiday with socialist origins. Its name hearkens back to a time when the political Left was ostensibly devoted to the cause of human welfare. These days, however, some on the far Left care less about the wellbeing of people than they do about making sure that people are never born at all. How did these radicals come to support a massive reduction in human population, if not humanity’s demise? Whether it’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez questioning the morality of childbearing, a birth-strike movement that encourages people to forego parenthood despite the “grief that [they say they] feel as a result,” or political commentator Bill Maher blithely claiming, “I can’t think of a better gift to our planet than pumping out fewer humans to destroy it,” a misanthropic philosophy known as “anti-natalism” is going increasingly mainstream.
Many on the left, especially soi-disant environmentalists, act as if the existence of humans is some sort of affliction, this makes perfect sense. From an evolutionary standpoint, of course, it’s a self-correcting problem.

Although they themselves have benefited enormously from the rise of free markets, liberal protection of property rights, and the meritocratic ideal, many among our most well-heeled men and women, even in the United States, have developed a tendency to embrace policies and cultural norms that undermine their own status. This is made worse by their own imperious behavior, graphically revealed in the mortifying college admissions scandal in the United States, where the Hollywood and business elites cheated, bribed, and falsified records to get their own kids into elite colleges.

On December 9 and 10, 2016, the New York Times and the Washington Post independently reported that anonymous senior intelligence officials had told them that, based on intercepted communications, the intelligence agencies agreed that Russia had hacked the Democratic National Committee to help Donald Trump win the election. Their evidence was the fact of their access to U.S communications intelligence. A flood of subsequent stories also cited allegations by “senior intelligence officials” that “intercepted communications” and “intercepted calls” showed that “members of Donald J. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election.”
Incontrovertibly, the officials who gave these stories to the Times and Post violated the Comint Statute, and are subject to the “10 and 10” for each count. There is no clearer instance of what the governing law is, of how it was violated, and of the punishment that this incurs.
An excellent question.

This is the important part:
The government crisis in Spain has been going on for than a year. Pedro Sánchez became the head of a minority government in June 2018 after the Spanish parliament passed a motion of no confidence in the right-wing government of former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Sánchez, who is the secretary-general of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), was able to secure victory thanks to support from the left-wing populist party Podemos, as well as Basque and Catalan separatists. This ill-matched group was unable to operate for long without a common enemy, however, and the eight parties proved incapable of negotiating the day-to-day issues involved in running a country.
This is the fundamental flaw with ‘proportional representation’. Every little collection of political quirks has its own ‘party’, because only parties are represented, and every one of them has a flyspeck of representation in the legislature; there is no one set of policies that can command majority support, and therefore a governmental system that depends on their being such a majority is crippled.
The only place where a parliamentary system has ever worked decently is Britain, because Britain was trained by several centuries of ‘court vs country’ combat to think in terms of there being two (and only two) sides to every political issue, which is what makes the system work — and, even now, that has been breaking down as British political culture gets corrupted by mainland European notions.
The American system has a built-in safeguard against this sort of deadlock in the form of Americans voting for an individual candidate rather than a political position in the form of a party — sure, party labels are significant and party feeling gets intense but what is actually elected is an individual whose political positions may or may not line up with somebody else in the government. This is how you get Republicans like John McCain and Rand Paul and Democrats like Scoop Jackson and Sam Nunn and Joe Liberman. If there were a plot of members of Congress by political position it would be a spectrum from far-right to far-left, much as in a European parliament, but at some point it would still be divided into two ‘sides’, and only two sides. Government functions that depend on their being only two formal sides to policy questions can therefore function, however complicated things might get concerning actual policies and legislation.
Even when minor ‘parties’ and ‘independents’ make it into a legislature, they still have to line up with one of the official ‘sides’ if they’re going to avoid being ignored. There has never been a time when a ‘third party’ has held the balance of power between the two official ‘sides’ as perennially happens in non-American governments. There is no chance of a ‘minor party’ being given a cabinet position in order to bring them aboard a ‘coalition’, as commonly happens in a non-American government, because the executive is always in the hands of a single side and, more importantly, in the hands of a single person. The centralization of effective power in the hands of the British Prime Minister over the last hundred years is a reflection of the need for such a focus for executive direction. The traditional practice of individual cabinet officials determining policy in their areas of responsibility, which characterized British governmental methodology through the end of the 19th century, couldn’t survive the pressures of modern political life.

“My frustration,” writes Peter Schweizer in his new book, “Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends,” “is not that the solid reporting on Trump has been too tough, but that the reporting on the Obama administration has been way too soft or in some cases nonexistent.” The author of the 2016 sensation “Clinton Cash” says Trump and his children didn’t invent the blurring of government and business, and details a number of ethical violations on both sides of the political aisle. One example: the little-noticed private equity firm run by the sons of Democrats Joe Biden and John Kerry, as detailed in this exclusive first excerpt.

Nine million patients a year are seeing crucial hospital appointments and operations cancelled by administrators – almost triple the number a decade ago, official statistics show.
Patients groups said too many vulnerable people were being treated as though they were “lucky to get an appointment at all” with slots routinely called off at the last minute, sometimes repeatedly.
How about that GREAT government-provided health care? Don’t you wish we had a system like that in the U.S.?
A fundamental characteristic of a service provided by the government is that when the government fails (or refuses) to provide it, you have nowhere else to go.
Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, last night vowed to “fundamentally overhaul” the system in order to tackle the failings and spare patients distress and harm.

Brett Stevens blows the whistle.
Your successful democratic citizen uses themselves as a means to this success. They use their time, their personal appeal, and even their bodies in order to become chosen by the system. This makes them both obedient and amoral.
Such a person will memorize reams of useless data, repeat it on command, and pretend it is real in order to get ahead; they will shame others who do not bleat the same things. They will attend jobs and school for however long is required to get that gold ring.
Even more, such a person learns to scorn their task. They are taught in school that nothing really matters in reality, since all that matters is having the right answer according to the system.
