Europe’s farm program, a system that was instrumental in forming the European Union, is now being exploited by the same antidemocratic forces that threaten the bloc from within. This is because governments in Central and Eastern Europe, several led by populists, have wide latitude in how the subsidies, funded by taxpayers across Europe, are distributed — even as the entire system is shrouded in secrecy.

Population growth is vital for the world economy. It means more workers to build homes and produce goods, more consumers to buy things and spark innovation, and more citizens to pay taxes and attract trade. While the world is expected to add more than 3 billion people by 2100, according to the United Nations, that’ll likely be the high point. Falling fertility rates and aging populations will mean serious challenges that will be felt more acutely in some places than others.

More importantly, it means more workers to carry the load of retired and useless people, since welfare state transfers aren’t going to shrink any time soon.

Hampshire was founded in 1970 to be a hippy college so it doesn’t have a big endowment nor beautiful buildings like older liberal arts colleges often do. Also, I’m guessing that Tiger Moms are allergic to it. Then came the Great Awokening, which as usual increased unhappiness at Hampshire by encouraging the least mentally stable students to act out.

Only 13 new students showed up at Hampshire this fall.

A social justice activist at Cornell University was kicked out of the school’s Alliance for Science fellowship and is now calling the school “racist,” despite complaints from other non-white fellows regarding the student’s behavior.

The student, Julia Feliz, uses the pronouns “they” and “them,” and, according to other students in the program, would constantly tie every classroom issue to social justice issues. This took time away from science, and frustrated other fellows.

Billionaire Bruce Wayne has come under fire for the way he dresses up as a bat and beats up alleged criminals. Many refer to his activity as “punching down” since the people he attacks tend to be citizens in the lower class.

“Bruce Wayne is a white male with billions of dollars,” said Gotham activist Pamela Isley. “He is one of the most privileged people in existence. And who is he attacking? People below the poverty line he says are ‘muggers.’ And he also often punches mentally ill clowns. The sickest thing is that he seems to think we should praise him for this.”

Isley then went on to say that, if anything, Wayne should be the one who is punched for having such an unequal amount of wealth in Gotham and that the only time he ever punched up was the time he fought Superman.

Wayne made one public statement while in the guise of Batman, saying in a gravelly voice, “I don’t need anyone to thank me, but all those who would prey on the good citizens of Gotham should fear me. I am vengeance. I am the night. I am… Batman! And if you pass a wealth tax, I’m moving.”

A very good question. One of the most attractive aspects of Batman is his “wonderful toys”, which he would not have if he weren’t a billionaire In Real Life. Without the Batplane, the Batmobile, the Bat Signal, the Bat Cave, and his Utility Belt, Batman would be rather a pathetic figure — some mentally deranged orphan who sneaks through the shadows in a strange costume (a fact that a number of non-superhero movies, like KickAss, have underscored).

And ponder, if you will, the sort of crimes that Batman fights: Crimes against the person (mugging, assaults, kidnappings) and crimes against property (armed robbery, cracking banks, hijacking trucks, making off with gold from the Fed, hat sort of thing).

And consider what falls off his radar: Drugs? Not so much. Money laundering? Uh, no. Insider trading, ponzi schemes, pump-and-dump? (Hey, we got Wall Street right here!) Sorry. International arms trade? Trade sanctions violations? Antifa thugs beating on harmless protestors? A bit beyond the scope of the old Utility Belt.

Most of us would love to be Batman — but I suspect that we would all settle for being Bruce Wayne. I know I would.

The dire conditions under which black residents live in Chicago seem like an insurmountable problem. Gang violence, drugs, poverty, and a poor educational system are endemic in certain areas, and the city’s Democratic leadership does not seem interested in addressing these issues. Of course, the primary issue in Chicago is arguably the outrageous homicide rate.

Most of the violence is related to gang activity. But Chicago is unique among similarly afflicted cities in that its gang violence problem is not just the result of poverty or cultural issues. One of the worst aspects of these homicides is that very few cases are solved, meaning most of the criminals responsible do not face justice.

If you get the urge to shoot somebody, do it in Chicago.

Last Thursday, Sager Braudis Gallery, a local art gallery, was the first to cave to activist pressure. The door handles on the Tesla Model S are being blamed for the death of a 48 year old man who was involved in a fiery crash earlier this year, according to Bloomberg. A police officer was unable to pull the man to safety from his burning vehicle.

Oman Awan was driving his leased Tesla in February when he lost control of the vehicle on a South Florida parkway and slammed into a palm tree. A police officer who responded to the scene was unable to open the doors to free Awan because the handles were retracted and bystanders were forced to watch “helplessly” as the car filled with smoke and flames, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in state court in Broward County.

A few points:

1. Trump did not “betray our allies the Kurds”. The Kurds are not our allies. We have no alliance with the Kurds. Kurd forces cooperate with American and other forces because we have a common enemy, just as American forces cooperate with Russian forces against common enemies, like ISIS, but the Kurds aren’t our allies any more than the Russians are our allies.
2. Kurdish forces worked hand-in-glove with the PKK, a harcdore communist terrorist organization that has been committing atrocities against Turkish civilians for as long as I’ve been alive. Needless to say, the Turks don’t like this, and I can’t say that I blame them.
3. Trump didn’t “pull our forces out of Syria.” He shifted 50 people from in the way of the Turkish operation to further west in Syria, troops that were in the way of the Turkish operation and were totally incapable of stopping said operation even if we’d wanted to.
4. We have no commitment to the Kurds beyond our commitment to everybody else in the Middle East to promote peace and discourage terrorism and atrocities.

So all this hot air from the Democrats( and their poodles Conservatism Inc.) is just more anti-Trump hot air.

I was at dinner recently with a colleague and two PhD students. The latter are brilliant young women, very hard working and, as you’d expect of 20-something students interested in gender and race, extremely right-on.

Inevitably, over (admittedly delicious) vegan stew, the conversation turned to a series of gender awareness workshops we were all encouraged to attend in order to boost our handling of transgender issues.

Earlier in the day, Hillary Clinton floated a conspiracy theory that the Russians are “grooming” the Hawaii congresswoman to be a third-party candidate in 2020, while claiming 2016 Green Party nominee Jill Stein is “also” a Russian asset.

Intuit’s QuickBooks accounting product remains a steady moneymaker, but in the past two decades TurboTax, its tax preparation product, has driven the company’s steadily growing profits and made it a Wall Street phenom. When Smith took over in 2008, TurboTax was a market leader, but only a small portion of Americans filed their taxes online. By 2019, nearly 40% of U.S. taxpayers filed online and some 40 million of them did so with TurboTax, far more than with any other product.

But the success of TurboTax rests on a shaky foundation, one that could collapse overnight if the U.S. government did what most wealthy countries did long ago and made tax filing simple and free for most citizens.

For more than 20 years, Intuit has waged a sophisticated, sometimes covert war to prevent the government from doing just that, according to internal company and IRS documents and interviews with insiders. The company unleashed a battalion of lobbyists and hired top officials from the agency that regulates it. From the beginning, Intuit recognized that its success depended on two parallel missions: stoking innovation in Silicon Valley while stifling it in Washington. Indeed, employees ruefully joke that the company’s motto should actually be “compromise without integrity.”

Think about the consequences of the Sexual Revolution and modern feminism, which began in the late 1960s as the Women’s Liberation Movement. The catastrophic effects of “liberty to individuals” can scarcely be denied, and we can see this not only as statistical trends, but in particular cases. Some people are simply incapable of exercising prudent judgment, and their folly often inflicts heartbreaking pain on those unfortunate enough to be associated with such fools.

In a post earlier this week (“What Causes Misogyny?”), I discussed the case of a man who discovered from a DNA test that his 15-year-old daughter was not actually his daughter, but rather the result of his cheating ex-wife’s affairs. What perhaps shocked me most in that tale was when the man told how, after discovering how he’d been deceived, he determined have nothing more to do with his ex-wife’s daughter — and yet allowed his mother to talk him into embracing the child as if she were actually his own!

My mother would have been the first to kick that chick (and her mother) to the curb. But that was her.

Every couple now goes to the wedding altar under the threatening shadow of potential divorce, and it is generally acknowledged that divorce is a punitive procedure by which aggrieved women are authorized to obtain a sadistic revenge against their ex-husbands. Because accusations of abuse give women greater leverage in divorce proceedings, we should not be surprised that (a) such accusations are often exaggerated or even sometimes fabricated from whole cloth, and (b) anyone who expresses skepticism toward these accusations will be accused of being anti-woman, an enabler of male violence against women.
