Shell Shocked

23rd December 2019

Read it.

High-powered shootouts are not unusual in Brazil. Despite tighter gun regulations than the U.S., in the poorer neighborhoods of many Brazilian cities, armed gangs and police trade fire with high-caliber assault rifles, machine guns, pistols, and sometimes even grenades and rocket launchers. Rio averages 24 shootouts per day. Large hours-long gun battles often don’t even make the headlines. Yet the shootouts leave a mark: piles of dead bodies.

The State of the First Amendment

21st December 2019

Read it.

I live in California.

I do not dare wear a political T-shirt. I don’t own a red Trump hat. No one I know, even the most rabid conservatives, would dare go out in public in a pro-Trump outfit.

It occurs to me that this is a sorry state of affairs. I live in a state where it isn’t just frowned upon if you share an unpleasant opinion, but that people are actively concerned about violence, losing their jobs, or being doxxed for clothing.

What a state.

That’s what life is like in the turd world.

The Many Faces of Scientific Fraud

21st December 2019

Read it.

Is every scientific article a fraud? This question may seem puzzling to those outside the scientific community. After all, anyone who took a philosophy course in college is likely to think of laboratory work as eminently rational. The assumption is that a researcher faced with an enigma posed by nature formulates a hypothesis, then conceives an experiment to test its validity. The archetypal presentation of articles in the life sciences follows this fine intellectual form: After explaining why a particular question could be asked (introduction) and describing how he or she intends to proceed to answer it (materials and methods), the researcher describes the content of the experiments (results), then interprets them (discussion).

Vox Media to Cut Hundreds of Freelance Jobs Due to New Calisocialism Law

17th December 2019

Ace of Spades points and laughs.

California is making it, effectively, illegal to hire freelancers for anything but very occasional work. They want people hired as full-timers.

So hundreds of people will lose all work.

Or, I suppose: Hundreds of people will purchase fake identification and submit articles under many different names, attempting to stay below the new law’s 35-articles-per-year maximum for freelancers.

Those of us in Red States are going through a lot of popcorn these days, which is probably bad for our health.

We Are in the Midst of the Worst Drug Crisis in American History

17th December 2019

Read it.

Actually, we are in the midst of the worst Crisis Crisis in American history. Never has there been a time when writers are so accustomed to attempt to make their way in the world by digging up some behavior in other people of which they disapprove and using it to get attention by trying to panic the public. The word ‘crisis’ is the telltale term — a crisis is a situation that demands a solution if disaster is not to befall, and it is the most frequently-used clickbait headline word in the modern world. Pop it into the search box for your favorite ‘news’ site if you don’t believe me.

Nothing is more common these days than the attitude ‘I don’t like that behavior and therefore you ought to be prevented, by force if necessary, from doing it.’. Never before has the totalitarian Nosy Parker impulse been so freely indulged and normalized, even encouraged. Kids in school are taught that it is a virtuous thing to denounce their peers, their parents, and their local politicians for any imagined character flaw and moral failing they can imagine (and kids have good imaginations).

People have always used drugs, legal and illegal, to take a chemical vacation from a world that they find intolerable — or, these days, just not as nice as they’ve been led to believe they’re entitled to. But changing the the world is hard, and complaining about what other people do is easy and profitable, and so we have the world as we see it.

‘California is a wondrous place. I’m leaving.’

16th December 2019

Read it.

It’s all here. Unfortunately, so are more people than reside in any other state. Which you’d think would be fine since California is three times larger than Iowa and 18 times larger than New Hampshire, the two states that we waste so much time talking about every four years.

But alas, about half of California’s 40 million have flocked into three metropolitan area—LA, San Diego and San Francisco.

As one result, for a variety of revealing reasons, several hundred-thousand Californians are fleeing the state annually, including me. A personal mantra has always been to run toward new jobs and homes, not flee old ones. Truth this time, we have many reasons to leave our Southern California home of 20 years.

UK: Boy, 17, Fatally Stabbed ‘During Petty Row Over Phone Charger’ Is Latest Victim of Knife Crime Crisis

“Tyrone and his friend started arguing over a phone charger, his friend then took a knife and stabbed him in his side the stab womb [punctured] his heart… 3 hours later Tyrone died in Hospital with his loving mother… by his side.”

A friend in need is a friend indeed.  In the U.S., the name ‘Tyrone’ would tell you everything you need to know about the vic’s ethnicity, but they may do things different there.

A tribute on the page read: “We lost Tyrone to a senseless act of violence. He left behind four Brothers and two Sisters.

Apparently they have different rules for capitalization, too.

More Evidence Of Pay-To-Play Emerges In CA Concealed Carry Probe

15th December 2019

Read it.

For several months now, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office has been investigating allegations that Laurie Smith, the Santa Clara County sheriff, has been engaged in the corrupt practice of granting concealed carry licenses to those who fork over cash for her campaign coffers.

The San Jose Mercury News has done a solid job of reporting on the ongoing investigation, and their latest report is a doozy. According to some recently released records from the sheriff’s office, it sure looks like Sheriff Smith and her staff have a policy that “favors those with power and influence”, as the paper puts it.

The key to Democrat Machine corruption is, as it always has been, favors by elected politicians in return for political support. For the Underclass this comes in the form of Free Stuff for votes; for the Upper Crust it comes in the form of cronyism for money, be it preference on getting pubic works deals or, as here, favors dependent on ‘who you know’.  Why it should come as a surprise that this logic operates as strongly in Blue State California as it does in New York, Detroit, or Chicago beggars belief.

California Schools Sued Over Use of “Culturally-Biased” Standardized Testing for Admissions

How to Tackle the Unfolding Research Crisis

14th December 2019

Read it.

Scholarly research is in crisis, and four issues highlight its dimensions. The first is that important disciplines such as physics, economics, psychology, medicine, and geology are unable to explain over 90 percent of what we see: dark matter dominates their theoretical understanding.

The second dimension of the research crisis is that systems which are critical to humankind—especially climate, demography, asset prices, and natural disasters—are minimally predictable.

The third dimension is a chronic inability to reproduce research findings.

The final indicator of crisis in research is that progress in developing better theory and forecasting capability has stagnated since the 1960s.

Intellectual Conformity Is Adaptive

13th December 2019

Libertarians and other people with unpopular views sometimes wonder why most human beings are so conformist. Especially intellectually. It is almost impossible to get an average human being to question received views in their society. You can give whatever amazing arguments you want, but it won’t matter, because they haven’t accepted the whole enterprise of adjusting beliefs in light of arguments in the first place. You can’t argue a person into paying attention to arguments.

Jersey City Gunman Was a Black Hebrew Israelite, So Don’t Expect to Hear Much More About the Shooting

12th December 2019

Read it.

It was only January when certain journalists went way out on a limb to give friendly news coverage to the racist and anti-Semitic Black Hebrew Israelites cult. This very odd editorial decision seemed to come in the service of better sticking it to the high school students from Covington Catholic — boys whom Black Hebrew Israelites had taunted on the national mall, inciting what became a famous incident.

So, now that one of the black nationalist cult’s former members stands accused of a deadly shoot-out with police, possibly in an act of anti-Semitic terrorism targeting a Kosher grocery market in Jersey City, we are probably not going to hear much talk about the fringe group in the broader context of radicalization and gun violence. That would be a personal and professional embarrassment for a lot of reporters and editors, some of who are currently in the middle of defending against lawsuits by the Covington teens.
