A congressional measure introduced on Friday in the House calls out the American pharmaceutical industry’s overreliance on China, warning that “decades of policies rooted in socialism” have stifled domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and left the United States exposed to “the hostile actions and unfair trade practices of the People’s Republic of China.”

About 60% of the student body is Asian, 18% white, and 1.8% black. This is apparently a problem and explains why the school district recently unanimously voted to admit students via this lottery system.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the “problem” is Asian American excellence: “One school board commissioner, Alison Collins, has called merit-based admissions ‘racist.’ The real problem progressives have with Lowell is that too many Asian-Americans are passing the entrance exam.”

Probably, most of you will have only the dimmest idea what a ‘fronted adverbial’ is. I used one in the last sentence. Can you spot it? Very good. Those among you who did are either a) professional linguists, b) seven-year-olds, or c) are, like me, recovering from several long months of home-schooling a seven-year-old. Forgive me if in mentioning it I retraumatize members of category c).

‘Fronted adverbials’ have become something of a cause célèbre among the parents of young school children. In Britain they even occasioned a prime ministerial joke, interpreted in some quarters as a dig at a certain former education secretary, about ‘every detail of the syllabus, from fronted adverbials to quadratic equations’. This term for what others know as a sentence modifier — essentially, a word or clause that qualifies the main part of a sentence — has become a metonym for a whole approach to language teaching. It’s an approach that has baffled many parents, exasperates experienced educators (try getting Michael Rosen started on this stuff), and seems to issue in some very odd and potentially counterproductive ideas about how sentences are best formed.

President Joe Biden’s immigration bill will put virtually all illegal immigrants on a bullet train to citizenship, provided that they meet the onerous requirement of claiming to have entered the country before Jan. 1, 2021. Only terrorists and convicted felons are excluded — at least in theory, but past experience suggests they’ll get amnesty, too. Even illegal immigrants who’ve already been deported will be invited back and given amnesty.

So far, the Republicans’ response has been to propose their own amnesty, while throwing in some boob-bait for the rubes about border security.

Even the election of Donald Trump, a ridiculous creature who became president by promising to crack down on illegal immigration and build a wall (promises he ignored), hasn’t put a dent in Washington’s enthusiasm for overwhelming the country with the third world.

A federal court requested the U.S. Department of Health and Humans Services (HHS) release more information pertaining to the purchase of organs harvested from aborted human fetuses, according to a Monday Judicial Watch press release.

“Documents previously uncovered in this lawsuit show that the federal government demanded the purchased fetal organs be ‘fresh and never frozen,’” the Judicial Watch press release said.

He might now be one of the most powerful men in global media, but I find whenever I see a photograph of former British deputy PM Nick Clegg, Orwell’s quote about everyone getting the face they deserve by 50 comes to mind.

Under the existing system therefore, Archie is Lord Archie of Sussex and holds by courtesy his father’s secondary title of Earl of Dumbarton. Any assertion to the contrary is a malignant lie. The Sussexes can choose not to use any of their titles, as Prince Edward and his wife did, and most everybody will respect that, but that doesn’t change the law. (The ‘Duchess of Cornwall’ is using the same trick; by law she is Princess of Wales, and if she wanted to claim that title, nobody could say her nay, although it would be a PR nightmare.)

When Charles becomes King (I predict that he will choose to be known as George VII because Charles is a badly tainted brand — what were Philip and Elizabeth thinking?), then Archie (and his incipient sister) will become (as a child of a monarch’s son) His Royal Highness Prince Archie of Sussex, and the ‘courtesy title’ will be dropped. The Sussexes can choose to use the titles or not, but it doesn’t depend on ‘skin color’ in any respect.

Meghan Markle could have been a real blessing to the royal family, but has chosen to be a chancre instead. Her performance, and Diana’s, demonstrate the wisdom of the royal family not straying too far from the reservation in picking spouses.

I have been telling parents for decades that sending a child to almost any college is playing Russian roulette with his or her values.

But it is a different version of Russian roulette. In the traditional version, only one of the gun’s six chambers contains a bullet. In the college version of Russian roulette, five of the six chambers contain a bullet.

If your child attends almost any university in America (or Canada or anywhere else in the English-speaking world), the odds are that your child’s decency, intellectual acuity, faculty of reason, character, and moral compass will be damaged, perhaps permanently.

The worse news is that sending your child to almost any elementary school or high school—public or private—is fast becoming equally toxic. More and more schools are being taken over by left-wing ideologues and by nonideologues who lack the courage to confront the ideologues.
