A nitrogen-fixing maize grown in an indigenous region of Mexico has the ability to fertilize itself, recent research shows. Now, as a global company and U.S. scientists work to replicate this trait in other corn varieties, will the villages where the maize originated share fairly in the profits?
Why should they ‘share in the profits’? Did they genetically engineer the variety from something else?
Or is this just socialist rent-seeking on behalf of ‘poor igorant natives’ by ‘woke’ educated white people?
We report, you decide.

I was curious to hear what one of the world’s leading Amazon forest experts, Dan Nepstad, had to say about the “lungs” claim.
“It’s bullshit,” he said. “There’s no science behind that. The Amazon produces a lot of oxygen but it uses the same amount of oxygen through respiration so it’s a wash.”
Plants use respiration to convert nutrients from the soil into energy. They use photosynthesis to convert light into chemical energy, which can later be used in respiration.
What about The New York Times claim that “If enough rain forest is lost and can’t be restored, the area will become savanna, which doesn’t store as much carbon, meaning a reduction in the planet’s ‘lung capacity’”?
Also not true, said Nepstad, who was a lead author of the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report. “The Amazon produces a lot of oxygen, but so do soy farms and [cattle] pastures.”

“If there is a SCOTUS vacancy next year and @senatemajldr carries through on his extraordinary promise to fill it-despite his own previous precedent in blocking Garland-it will tear this country apart,” David Axelrod said in a tweet Friday afternoon.
Well, no, it couldn’t. Not unless AntiFa can muster more guns than the NRA.
Axelrod is merely doing the sturm-und-bluster pimp walk that Democrats roll out (‘We bad! We so bad! Better not mess wit us, ’cause we bad!’) whenever they suspect that Republicans might possibly be considering treating Democrats the way Democrats habitually treat Republicans. This is meant to frighten the Mitt Romneys and John McCains of this world back onto their reservation. Such bluster betrays weakness rather than strength.
It won’t work on Trump, who will nominate whoever he wants to nominate, regardless of Democrat bluster. He’s good about that.
It won’t work with McConnell, either, who is very conscious the he will have Trump’s boot up his ass (rhetorically speaking) if he fails to do his job. And I think McConnell is actually enjoying having power, now that he’s gotten over his hesitation to use it.
The Brett Kavanaugh circus underscored the fact that there is no nominee Trump could make that won’t be tarred as the second coming of Heinrich Himmler. If Trump nominated Larry Tribe from Harvard, the Huffington Post would quickly find evidence of Tribe having sexually harassed a hamster during his prep school years. Therefore there is nothing to be gained by listening to the Usual Suspects in hopes that they won’t trash his nominee, because That’s Gonna Happen. He will probably (I hope) nominate a well-qualified woman like Amy Coney Barrett, just to demonstrate to the world what a bunch of hypocritical partisan rage-monkeys the ‘feminist’ clerisy can be. And then he will spend a month or two on Twitter banging on the glass of their cages, just because he can. And in the end the Senate will vote to confirm and the three remaining liberal justices will be invited to Go Suck On It.
There is no way RGB can last five more years, and I’ve got a large cabinet full of popcorn set aside towards that day.

March For Our Lives, a student group aimed at promoting gun control, recently released “a Green New Deal, but for guns,” on Wednesday
The agenda calls for many progressive gun control measures, such as a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and high capacity magazines. The group also seeks to eliminate 30% of the guns in America via government buybacks, and create a new federally appointed “National Director of Gun Violence Prevention.” Additionally, the plan calls for increased gun registration, which has historically lead to confiscation, as well as the inclusion of “in-person interviews” and “personal references” into the gun-buying process.
The defect here, of course, is that they are ‘students’. Students are basically parasites on society, who neither produce things or make life better, but are rather given a privileged position one the grounds that they need to concentrate on their studies. But they don’t — they pick up a few half-baked ideas and use their Copious Free Time to get in other people’s faces about them.
Adults ought to refuse to pay any attention to people who’s only job is ‘student’.

In the world of education, the “three R’s” refer to the fundamentals of instruction: reading, ’riting, and ’rithmetic. In the world of the Democratic mainstream media, the three R’s sadly refer to: resistance, Russia, and racism. Since the election of Donald Trump in 2016, almost all legacy media outlets have fixated on resistance to his presidency, at the expense of traditional journalism. Until this summer, that resistance centered on the chimera of an insidious Russian conspiracy. Now, as that canard fades away, the new anti-Trump obsession of racism emerges.
Think I exaggerate? Then consider actual recent statements from the leadership of the once-vaunted New York Times. At its internal town-hall meeting last week, Executive Editor Dean Baquet bluntly conceded the Times’ preoccupation with the Trump/Russia saga, explaining that “we built our newsroom to cover one story.” But Robert Mueller’s milquetoast report and subsequent disastrous testimony effectively ended the lunacy of the whole Russia imbroglio. Acknowledging this conundrum, Baquet admitted, “Now we have to regroup.”

Now CNN political analyst April Ryan is in hot water after a local journalist claims he was assaulted by Ryan’s bodyguard while covering an event she was speaking at, earlier this month.
Charlie Kratovil, a local New Jersey journalist and editor of New Brunswick Today, told his story on Twitter of covering the 4th annual New Jersey Parent Summit, where Ryan was speaking on August 3. You can see the thread below. He explained that he went through all the proper channels, documenting his story with evidence, along the way. The New York Times article posed as a “fun” interactive quiz but hid some nasty Republican sliming in the text, accusing the GOP of conspiring to hold on to office via “voter suppression or attempts to skew the census” : “Quiz: Let Us Predict Whether You’re a Democrat or a Republican.”
It’s a creation of Sahil Chinoy, a graphics editor for the Times Opinion section, similar to his previous “graphics” story in July, in which one of his graphics showed a major swerve to the left by the Democrats since 2008 but which was downplayed in the text, in favor of the story’s intended takeaway of Republicans careening toward the “far right.”
