nside the New Right, Where Peter Thiel Is Placing His Biggest Bets

23rd April 2022

A reporter from Vanity Fair does his obligatory ticket-punching anthropological trip outside of the Left Coast.

But the people these pieces describe, who made up most of the partygoers around me, were only the most buttoned-up seam of a much larger and stranger political ferment, burbling up mainly within America’s young and well-educated elite, part of an intra-media class info-war. The podcasters, bro-ish anonymous Twitter posters, online philosophers, artists, and amorphous scenesters in this world are variously known as “dissidents,” “neo-reactionaries,” “post-leftists,” or the “heterodox” fringe—though they’re all often grouped for convenience under the heading of America’s New Right. They have a wildly diverse set of political backgrounds, with influences ranging from 17th-century Jacobite royalists to Marxist cultural critics to so-called reactionary feminists to the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, whom they sometimes refer to with semi-ironic affection as Uncle Ted. Which is to say that this New Right is not a part of the conservative movement as most people in America would understand it. It’s better described as a tangled set of frameworks for critiquing the systems of power and propaganda that most people reading this probably think of as “the way the world is.” And one point shapes all of it: It is a project to overthrow the thrust of progress, at least such as liberals understand the word.

The only thing missing is the Marlin Perkins Mutual of Omaha commercial.

“The fundamental premise of liberalism,” Yarvin told me, “is that there is this inexorable march toward progress. I disagree with that premise.” He believes that this premise underpins a massive framework of power. “My job,” as he puts it, “is to wake people up from the Truman Show.”

Yarvin understands the essential nature of Progressivism (not liberalism, which is an older and more feeble impulse that latched onto Progressivism during the Roosevelt years). This is what makes Yarvin (‘Mencius Moldbug’) worth reading.

How the Obamas Took Spotify for a Ride

21st April 2022

Read it.

When Spotify in 2019 signed a roughly $25 million deal with Barack and Michelle Obama to produce podcasts, the media hailed the move as a triumph in the audio streaming service’s quest to become “the world’s No. 1 audio platform.” Now, three years later, Spotify wants nothing to do with the former first couple.

As the Obamas’ contract with Spotify comes to an end and the couple solicits bids for a new deal, Spotify is not looking to renew the partnership, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. The company reportedly felt it got the raw end of the big money deal, as the Obamas were less than motivated to appear in person on the platform’s podcasts.

Masks work. The judge’s ruling does not change that. (Washington Post) If masks worked, those who wanted that protection could get it by wearing a mask and wouldn’t need everybody else to wear a mask. A Plague of Billionaires?

20th April 2022

Read it.

The United States is awash in crises. The crime rate is surging; inflation continues to rise; COVID-19 is still not tamed; curricular reform is a contentious issue at all levels of education; global warming continues to be the source of much anxiety; the antitrust laws are under strong attack; social media continues to be a flashpoint. But for the readers of the New York Times Magazine, on April 10, 2022—devoted largely to The Money Issue—attacking the proliferation of new billionaires, who now total 735 (or is it 927?) has become the centerpiece of their campaign to reduce income and wealth inequality.

The alarm bells of this trend have been rung by Willy Staley, one of its staff writers, whose lead delivers this supposed knockout punch: “Their numbers are out of control—and the rest of us are subject to their whims.” This makes great copy, but horrific economics. Just why is the increased number of billionaires a bad thing? Theirs is not a coming crime wave in which each of us are put at risk for the loss of our lives or property by a new band of predators. Indeed, the exact opposite is true. Although none of the Times’s writers cares to mention the point, each of these billionaires (or their direct ancestors) created the wealth by selling goods and services to people, which at a minimum had a total value far greater to those people than the fraction of the gain that the billionaires were able to garner for themselves.

Max Boot and ‘Democracy’

15th April 2022

Read it.

What is this “democracy” that Max Boot seeks to protect? It seems undeniable that his understanding of “moderation” includes the elimination of “content” (even if completely accurate) that puts left of center political interests and candidates in a bad light. The thin pretense that Boot is deeply committed to the truth is part of the same vision animating Nancy Pelosi’s claim that legislation intended to make election cheating vastly easier is needed to “save” democracy.

The weird use of “democracy” here is more than a cynical attempt to gain an electoral edge for one side. There appears to be a coherent tacit redefinition of “democracy” at work.

Promoting Diversity

14th April 2022

Ann Coulter is fed up.

Weird that the media didn’t cite Ketanji Brown Jackson’s height and weight as her most important characteristics. When it came to THE FIRST BLACK WOMAN ON THE SUPREME COURT, it was all about her race. But after a guy shot up a New York City subway car this week, the last thing the media wanted to tell us was his race.

For more than three hours after the attack, we got urgent alerts: Suspect at large! Police request public’s help! Be on the alert for a male, about 5’8?, 160 lbs.”

In this particular case, the media’s rule of never telling us the suspect’s race (unless he’s white) was more deranged than usual. This wasn’t a carjacking. It wasn’t a shooting at a block party. It wasn’t an attack on an Asian or Jew. This crime had all the earmarks of a terror attack — smoke bombs, fireworks, a gas mask, and about a dozen people shot while trapped in a subway car.

The police desperately needed the public’s help, but most people were looking for a Middle Easterner.

Why the Sudden Hunter Biden Epiphany at Washington Post?

1st April 2022

Read it.

Just when you thought the Hunter Biden scandals had died in darkness, The Washington Post published more than 6,300 words on March 30 admitting that a notable fraction of his laptop contents was authentic.

Why now? Why not last year? Why did liberal outlets act like everyone expressing concern about Biden was a Trump-adoring kook?

The Case of the Curious Omissions

1st April 2022

Read it.

This week the Washington Post published a story on the contents of Hunter Biden’s very real laptop. The FBI have misplaced the laptop, but the Post has possessed the contents since June 2021. Now at least part of the story can be told.

When the New York Post first broke the laptop story in October 2020, a few weeks before the presidential election, the Washington Post was not happy about it. As I noted in defamed and disparaged it. WaPo reporters, WaPo columnists, and an esteemed WaPo fact-checker blasted the other Post’s scoops reporting those contents. Now the WaPo defamers are all but slapping themselves on the back for picking up after the Post.

Having taken part in the Post’s 2020 coverage and followed up with a book on the laptop, Miranda Devine is not impressed. In her Post column yesterday Devine observes the “curious omissions” in the Washington Post story….

Hunter Biden Rolls On

28th March 2022

Read it.

Miranda Devine zooms in on the story of Devon Archer in the New York Post column “Biden’s silent as son’s former friend and business partner faces jail, financial ruin.” Devine updates us on the story: “Archer has less than five weeks left before he has to go to jail to serve a one-year, one-month sentence over a fraud he says he had no knowledge his then-partners were committing, and which cost him his life’s savings.”

Devine’s February 7 column anticipated Archer’s sentencing. Her previous column seems somewhat more cynical about Archer than her column today. In any event, her column today contrasts with it. In the February column Devine exhumes interesting material from Hunter’s laptop. Both columns are worth reading.

It has been left to the reporters and columnists of the New York Post to tell the Hunter Biden story. Archer is a chapter in the story. Archer and several of his business colleagues have been convicted of fraud in the case brought by Southern District of New York prosecutors.

Why Do You Know That?

24th March 2022

Read it.

It is no accident that virtually every claim that is consistently labelled as disinformation is one that threatens the policy agenda of the Democratic party (or parts of their agenda that they are too embarrassed to state publicly). “Disinformation” is no longer a concept used to separate truth from falsehood. In the past few years, it has been rhetorically intensified to circumvent the question of truth entirely. It is a means to annex the public’s role in assessing the validity of reporting, placing this authority solely in the hands of “experts” who have the exclusive right to say what is “true.” Understanding the differences between “misinformation” and “disinformation” and observing the ways these concepts are arbitrarily applied is crucial to grasping how our media and other institutions undermine genuine public deliberation—a prerequisite for any functioning democracy.

The Greenhouse Effect at the Supreme Court

22nd March 2022

Read it.

It goes without saying that leftists have perfected the art of situational ethics. The basic operating rule for the left is: “‘Democracy’ means getting what we want; if any institution doesn’t give us what we want, that institution must be destroyed,” though they will always call it “reform.”

From “democracy in crisis” to rule by decree faster than Vin Diesel in Fast & Furious 10. (Shouldn’t Vin Diesel change his last name in this time of the climate crisis? Maybe some other time. . .)

We now see this in the case of the Supreme Court, which is infuriating liberals because it no longer serves as a policy-making body for the left to use as an end-run around the branches of government accountable to voters.

Storm in a Cauldron

22nd March 2022

Read it.

There are now two main ways of reading the phenomenon of early modern witchcraft. One is the dogged academic research of scholars like Peter Maxwell-Stuart, Ronald Hutton and Keith Thomas. The other is an attempt to bend the reality of history to fit a modish exploration of feminine identity and the tyranny of the patriarchy down the ages. I Am Witch: Tales from the Roundhouse, recently staged in Lancaster, falls firmly into the second category.

The exhibition sets out its stall early on. It refers to “The Burning Times”, the title of a 1990 Canadian documentary which presented an unapologetically feminist reading of witchcraft in the early modern period and certainly one of the most laughably poor and ahistorical films of its generation. It goes on to state its purpose as explaining “how epigenetically inherited trauma from those times continues to affect us today, and how creativity, ceremony and sisterhood offer all of us a pathway to healing.”

Every ‘modern witch’ (and believer in astrology) I’ve ever met was a Democrat (or to the left thereof).
