The self-appointed “fact checkers” generally fall silent when a Democrat tells a whopper. We are seeing a lot of that in Minnesota these days, with incumbent Governor Tim Walz locked in a tight race with Dr. Scott Jensen. Walz didn’t have a lot of composure to start with–he is an angry, intemperate man–and whatever composure he had seems to be crumbling under pressure. The result is frequent departures from the truth.

On Sunday, Walz was interviewed at the State Fair by a liberal reporter from WCCO television. He unleashed a couple of epic lies. First, he claimed that there had hardly been any school shutdown in Minnesota: “Just to be clear, over 80% of our students missed less than 10 days of in-class learning.”

This assertion is inexplicable. Gov. Walz shut down the entire school system on March 15, 2020. His administration then put in place a complicated matrix using county health data and school district boundaries for schools to reopen in the fall of 2020. Most public schools did not return to in-class learning until the spring of 2021. “Less than 10 days”? That is not true of any public school student in the state. For most, it was a year.

I‘m sure you’ve seen the pictures of lakes Mead and Powell, those great reservoirs on the Colorado River that supply water to the west. For years now, we’ve been allowed to believe that we are in a great drought that is causing these lakes to diminish to their current meager levels. The drought, we’re directed to assume, has been caused, or at least exacerbated, by climate change, which is in turn caused by our own arrogant use of fossil fuels, the bane of all existence, an existential threat as urgent, deadly, and certain as the great asteroid that hit the Yucatan and destroyed the dinosaurs. The bathtub ring of calcium salts that stains the rock at the edge of these reservoirs is yet more evidence that we are the problem and will cause our own demise, good riddance to us.

But for those who believe all this and demand massive response, look at this chart; it comes from the US Dept. of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation study completed in 2012. It shows the Colorado River Basin’s historical watershed and the actual and projected demand for water from this watershed.

This chart, to even the most ardent climate change activist, shows absolutely that the declines in lakes Mead and Powell have nothing at all to do with drought. It is demand that is draining the lakes; we’ve depleted the watershed faster than it can be replenished. Further, there is no evidence that the watershed is diminished at all. The entire issue is a fiction.

All told, there are now fewer compet­it­ive districts than at any point in the last 52 years. If the good news is that both parties emerged with reas­on­able oppor­tun­it­ies in coming years to win control of a closely divided House, the bad news is that they will fight that battle on the narrow­est of terrains under maps arti­fi­cially engin­eered to reduce compet­i­tion.

They say that like it was a bad thing. Competitive districts disfranchise the losers. Let me say that again. Competitive districts disfranchise the losers.

If you are interested in representative democracy at all, the ideal system is to put all of the voters from one side in the same districts, and all of the voters from the other in the same districts. That maximizes the number of people who are represented by the legislator that they agree with. (Oh, sure, politicians make a lot of mouth noise about ‘representing everybody in the district’, but only the simple-minded believe that rot.)

This is why courts are so fond of ruling that State X has to create another majority-minority district: They know that spreading out voters of a particular viewpoint so that they are the lesser number in a district means that they are effectively shut out. We’ve been fighting this fight since the Sixties.

The only people who profit from ‘competitive districts’ are the media outlets who get to report on elections as if they were horse races. “Can the dark-horse candidate come from behind and win? STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT!” That’s why you’ll never read an article in any newspaper or hear any opinion on TV regarding the undoubted virtues of gerrymandering.
