Arnold raises some worthwhile questions, but I don’t think he gives them enough thought before drawing his conclusions. The basic problem is more objectively defining what the term “IQ” means — or, prior to that, what the term “intelligence” means. Just saying that intelligence is the ability to think better than someone else is worse than useless, because “think” itself isn’t a well-defined term, and the statement appears to say something useful without doing so.

I suspect that Hart and Kling are using “IQ” in different ways, and that makes for a tedious and unfruitful discussion. The problem with these quasi-political discussions is that nobody starts out by defining his freaking terms, which would be the first thing they’d do if they were writing a systematic treatment of any other subject.

That chaps my butt big-time.

Read it. This is the same reason the Times and the Post periodically run lists of names of the dead — not to honor them or to commemorate their service, but to create as large a virtual body pile as possible.

Read it. It is a mark of how low we have sunk that most “intellectuals” in America have a knowledge of religion  that would disgrace a cartoon character.

I live in Texas; I have zero interest in how much of California might be on fire, a topic that seems to be consuming (pun intended) the local “professional” news media here in Dallas.

This woman is a poster child for why socialists need to be kept out of any position of power or influence — they are totalitarians to the core, with no moral commitment to freedom. Much like racists, come to think of it.

Actually, one must distinguish between people who make their money as entrepreneurs, who tend to be Republican, and people who make their money through financial manipulation or inheritance or pretending to be other people in public, who tend to be Democrat. Sadly, a lot of CEOs are in the latter category rather than the former.

I suspect that the latter crowd subconsciously feel that they haven’t really earned, and hence don’t really deserve, their wealth; that guilt makes them “liberal” and hence Democrats. Of course, that’s just a theory; I’m too lazy to do the research necessary to test it. But it fits the available evidence.

Rush Limbaugh is auctioning off the letter that Senate Democrats sent to his syndication partner in a vain attempt to pressure him into apologizing. You would think that they would have seen that coming — but they’re politicians, and therefore had their common sense surgically removed when they reported to Washington.

Proceeds will go the the foundation providing scholarships for kids of military and law enforcement people for which Rush has raised $30 million over the years — because, as you know, Rush hates “phony soldiers”.

The head of Clear Channel send a very polite response. I’d have just written, “Hey, Harry: Bite me.” But that’s why I’m not in charge of a huge media conglomerate, I guess.

One wonders sometimes how liberalism can survive, when its most cherished myths can be exposed as frauds in a matter of minutes.

Easy — they think that they’re smart and everybody else is stupid. This notion is proof against any counterexample, as Dan Rather illustrates very elegantly.

Apparently the New York Times has mucked with some of its RSS feeds so that the feed gives you the article title and a little blurb but there is no link to the actual article.

I suppose that this is designed to act as a teaser so that you’ll be moved to go to the paper’s site to find and read the actual article (and be exposed to more of their advertising).

I’m wondering how long it will take for someone to point out to them that the purpose of an RSS feed is precisely to avoid this sort of hunt-and-peck information-gathering (which is so last-century).

Expect to see a lot less mention of the New York Times here — and elsewhere, I expect.

Read it. Apparently the efforts to reduce consumption of fossil fuels are instead encouraging their use. What a surprise.

In most states there is a crime called “unauthorized practice of law”, which comes of someone who doesn’t have the requisite legal training, and who hasn’t passed the bar exam and been licensed, acting like an attorney — advising people for pay and  sometimes even attempting to represent them in legal proceedings. The basis for this crime is that people who aren’t trained as lawyers, and who haven’t demonstrated that they’re competent to act as attorneys, will do more harm than good, just like someone who hasn’t gone to medical school or been licensed as a physician trying to act like a doctor.

There ought to be an equivalent concept of “unauthorized practice of religion”, for people who have read a book or two and think that they’re now completely conversant with what a religion teaches and ought to practice. (Hm, wait a minute — that describes most Protestants….)

Read it. Unfortunately, a knowledge of basic economics is not a requirement for any job that I know of — including economics, as Paul Krugman demonstrates pretty clearly.

Read it. Were I running for President, I’d be embarrassed to have such people as supporters.
