Its theme was that the political “hyperbole” about climate change doesn’t match the underlying science — even if one trusts the underlying science. That alone was enough to send journalists into unhinged and often profane orbit.

Each year, Earth Day is accompanied by predictions of doom. Let’s take a look at past predictions to determine just how much confidence we can have in today’s environmentalists’ predictions.

In 1970, when Earth Day was conceived, the late George Wald, a Nobel laureate biology professor at Harvard University, predicted, “Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” Also in 1970, Paul Ehrlich, a Stanford University biologist and best-selling author of “The Population Bomb,” declared that the world’s population would soon outstrip food supplies. In an article for The Progressive, he predicted, “The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.” He gave this warning in 1969 to Britain’s Institute of Biology: “If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.” On the first Earth Day, Ehrlich warned, “In 10 years, all important animal life in the sea will be extinct.” Despite such predictions, Ehrlich has won no fewer than 16 awards, including the 1990 Crafoord Prize, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences’ highest award.

It has become painfully clear in recent years that partisan gerrymandering is one of American democracy’s worst illnesses.

Painfully clear, perhaps, to people who write for Slate on ‘law and LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ issues’, but for rational adults, the worst illness is democracy itself — a system of government in which, as the classical definition has it, ‘51% of the population can pee in the soup of the other 49%’. The key characteristic of American democracy is that it is constrained, viz. there are barriers in place to keep The Majority, no matter how overwhelming, from doing the dirty to minorities. This doesn’t always work well — ask Japanese-Americans who their favorite Democrat President is — but in normal times works much better than an unconstrained democracy might.

Although the Supreme Court held decades ago that the purpose of redistricting was to ensure “fair and effective representation for all citizens,” legislators often use the process to lock the minority party out of power.

Democracy itself locks the minority party out of power. (Funny how this complaint never surfaces when Democrats are in charge. Look at any big city and count how many Republicans are on the city council and try to say with a straight face that the minority party has any power.) For the ‘minority party’ to have any power directly undermines the essential nature of democracy.

Both Democrats and Republicans deploy partisan gerrymandering to dilute votes for their opponents, creating one-party rule and, arguably, greater polarization.

I just love that phrase, ‘dilute votes’, as if you can just add water to minority voters and watch them dissolve like dirt in the laundry. Whenever you see the phrase ‘dilute’ it indicates somebody trying to get power for a ‘minority’ that is greater than they would have under a strict democracy. Almost always this is a Democrat (the oxymoron party) complaining that Democrats don’t get to run things even when they lose elections. And if you want polarization, well, listen to a speech by Chuck Schumer or Hillary Clinton or Elizabeth Warran or any BlackLives Matter demagogue and you’ll see where the polarization is coming from.

I won’t bother fisking the rest of this article (remember, they actually paid somebody to write this stuff), but just move on to discuss ‘gerrymandering’ in light of what one might call ‘democratic theory’. Most arguments against ‘gerrymandering’ take the form of ‘but it makes districts less competitive!’, as if this were some sort of electoral Olympics in which the horse-race aspect of an election has some special virtue. In truth, it does not. ‘Effective representation’ (see Supreme Court reference above) is all about having representatives who believe the same way as the person voting, and the less ‘competitive’ a district is, the more actual ‘effective representation’ that voter has. It is obvious to the most casual observer who doesn’t live in his parents’ basement that if a Representative gets 75% of the vote the voters of that district who are on the winning side (and that’s what democracy cares about, remember) are more effectively represented than in a district where the Representative only gets 51% of the vote.

Think about it. I’ll wait.

The more ‘competitive’ the election, the greater the proportion of voters whose ‘representation’ isn’t effective. That’s the bottom line. From the point of view of DEMOCRACY, the more ‘uncompetitive’ districts one has, the more ‘effective representation’ one gets.

Sure, it’s possible to construct an academic exercise where one way of redistricting an area gives the ‘minority party’ less power than they would have under a different way of redistricting, but if you look closely, these claims (like claims for global warming) always depend for their validity on the truth of some very strong assumptions about voter behavior (typically that all Republicans vote the same way and all Democrats vote the same way), assumptions that have no necessary connection to real-life voter behavior. And no one (that I’ve seen) has yet come up with an actual redistricting scheme that precisely fits that strong-assumption exercise.

The reason why you hear all of the DemLegHump media jaw on about ‘gerrymandering’ is because ‘noncompetitive’ districts are boring. Without a ‘horse race’, they have nothing on which to report. People who went to journalism school because they wanted to Make A Difference get really frustrated when everything they do to Make A Difference doesn’t matter, because the election is only going to go one way. That’s the real reason they don’t like ‘gerrymandering’.

I must confess that Bill O’Reilly has always rubbed me the wrong way. I never watched him and never felt even the faintest impulse to do so. He struck me as the sort of arrogant I’m-the-smartest-guy-in-the-room jerks that populate the Crust, mostly on the Left but sometimes on the Right, concerning which the gene pool would profit by their absence.

I have no idea whether there is any substance to the accusations that supposedly underlay his situation or whether this was a successful witch-hunt by the Usual Suspects. Rush Limbaugh suggests that it was a carefully calculated campaign engineered by the New York Times and various fell0w-travellers, and that may be true. In any event, I will shed no tears for his demise.

University of Pittsburgh professor Shanara Reid-Brinkley held a lecture Tuesday where she stated that American democracy was built on “anti-blackness” and that black citizens cannot possibly be free in America.

“I think that we’re all screwed because white people are in charge,” Reid-Brinkley said, speaking at an event at the University of Wisconsin.

Well, then, when is she leaving? Surely she doesn’t want to stay in a country where she can’t be ‘free’?

A month after the election, Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, published an op?ed in The New York Times that sought to position himself and his show as instruments of healing in a broken land. It was called “Let’s Not Be Divided, Divided People Are Easier to Rule,” and it zapped around progressives’ inboxes and Facebook feeds like a digital balm of Gilead. It was a reminder that we were not, in those fevered early weeks, being our best selves: “Instead of speaking in measured tones about what unites us, we are screaming at each other about what divides us.” How true that was, and—one might churlishly observe—what a sea change from Noah’s tone during the campaign, when he berated the Republican candidate for tweeting with “those fat little tiny fingers of yours” and for trying to think with “that stupid head,” and when he advised the candidate that “maybe you should look in the mirror, asshole.”

In the past, affirmative action for black schoolteachers, especially black male teachers, was usually justified with a Role Model rationale: It’s good for poor black children, especially black boys, to see that some blacks grow up to have respectable jobs where they show up to work on time. (Another reason offered more quietly was the hope that tough black guys could discipline black boys better.)

But lately, the conventional wisdom has been shifting away from that somewhat condescending Role Model rationale toward the remarkably hostile argument that blacks must be given even more special breaks when applying to be teachers because lots and lots of those Obama-voting, MLK-worshipping Nice White Lady schoolteachers are actually secret implicit racists, practically homicidal George Zimmermans.

I grew up around a university (my father Richard is a professor emeritus) and went on to earn a Ph.D. in medieval history, so I initially expected the campus ever to be central in my life. Then, because it radicalized and I did not, my connection to the academy withered. The mainstream media’s obsession with Fox News continues, as the New York Times sends intrepid reporters John Koblin and Nick Corasaniti into the fierce jungle-land of right-wing television to watch an entire day of it. They have escaped back with this dispatch from the front lines: “One Nation, Under Fox: 18 Hours With a Network That Shapes America — Fox News is a singular force, crafting a searing narrative about what’s happening in the world for millions of viewers, including President Trump.”

It wasn’t that awful a report, although one can’t picture the Times undertaking such an expedition during the Obama years, going on a brave quest into the left-wing fever swamps of MSNBC (and CNN, and ABC…).

Such an arduous task of reading horrendous garbage like In Full Color is likely illegal in most enlightened European countries. After finishing Dolezal’s 280-page “journey to self-identification,” I’ve decided to become a Marxist revolutionary so I can help spare any future generations from such unjust working conditions.

In Full Color ends with an epilogue describing how Dolezal still walks around faking it as a black woman. Her goal “is to provide comfort to those who are not struggling with their identities and assure them that they’re not alone, that they’re not freaks, and that they don’t deserve to be ridiculed or shunned by their friends, families, and communities.” On the contrary, Dolezal stretches the definition of identity beyond absurdity and merely serves as a distraction from real issues facing the black community.  The theme of her book is clearly validation, but the only thing she really needs is professional help.

Early Tuesday evening, Curtis Houck at NewsBusters noted that the rape of a 14 year-old girl at a Maryland high school by two older teens (17 and 18) who recently arrived the U.S. was the subject of a question at Trump Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s press conference earlier that day. The Washington Post’s first story on the rape Friday illustrates Houck’s observation that the crime is “an inconvenient story for their liberal narrative” that one must downplay or simply not report negative news about the actions of illegal immigrants.

Authorities charged a Hampshire College student with assaulting a member of Central Maine Community College’s basketball team over a dispute about cultural appropriation. Really.

The Hampshire student, 20-year-old Carmen Figueroa, allegedly started a fight because the basketball player had braided her hair in a manner that upset Figueroa. She walked up to the visiting player—during a basketball game—and demanded that the player remove the braids from her hair, according to masslive.com.

Figueroa is a female student of color. The basketball player was a member of the women’s team. Her ethnicity is not stated in news articles, though it seems likely she’s either white, or belongs to some other race whose members aren’t allowed to braid their hair Latina-style, according to Figueroa’s world view.
