GMA Edits Republican Out of Story on Texas Primaries

6th March 2018

Read it.

Marking Tuesday’s midterm election primaries in Texas, ABC’s Good Morning America decided to take a story that was already 73% pro-Democrat and make it 100% pro-Democrat by editing out the one Republican interviewed for the report. The segment in question, from Congressional Correspondent Mary Bruce, was recycled from Sunday’s This Week and hyped how “Democrats are hoping to turn this deep red state blue, fueled by a wave of female candidates.”

Proglodyte dreams! Who wants to read about those deplorable old Republicans, anyway?

The Real Reason the Investor Class Hates Pensions

6th March 2018

Read it.

Who are these sinister people, the ‘investor class’? Nothing immediately comes to mind, but they sure sound scary, don’t they?

No issue in America today better illustrates the divergent interests of working Americans and the 1 percent than pension reform. Substantial empirical evidence shows that America’s favored retirement vehicle — the 401(k), recently renounced by its own inventors — is grossly inadequate and will leave tens of millions of Americans with insufficient retirement assets. And yet states and cities are busy converting traditional pensions into these failing 401(k)s or equivalents, to the great benefit of money managers and the finance class.

Another apparent villain of the piece, this time the ‘finance class’. Who might these sinister folk be? No telling — the author certainly can’t be bothered to tell us — but, again, they sure sound scary, don’t they?

Another thing the author fails to reveal is what ‘substantial empirical evidence’ about the ‘gross inadequacy’ of the 401k might be. I guess we’re just supposed to take his word for it.

Speaking anecdotally, it was the 401k that put me on the road to having sufficient financial independence to retire when I wanted to. If that’s failure, gimme more. Of course, the 401k does demand a bit of discipline on the part of the person allegedly saving for retirement; the only difference between it and a normal brokerage account is the fact that it’s sheltered from taxes, which would seem to suggest that the ‘failure’ belongs in to the tax system rather than the vehicle itself — which I am fully prepared to believe.

Advocates of pension “reform” — which really means cutting or eliminating traditional pension funds — will tell you that such funds are a big drain on state and local budgets, since, as defined-benefit programs, they are obligated to pay workers a defined amount in their retirement. But that’s largely a question of political priorities; underfunded pensions are the result of, well, decades of underfunding pensions. The real reason for the attack on pensions goes deeper, and exposes the great and growing rift between America’s economic elite and everyone else.

That’s a nice sweep under the rug. The problem with defined-benefit pension plans has always been that those in charge of the plans are reluctant to fund them properly, either because they want to use the money for something else (in a private business) or because they were overly generous in their pension promises and the chickens are now coming home to roost (in public pensions). That strikes me as a serious and ongoing problem worth more than just a handwave on the way to pointing the finger to Those Sinister Forces Over There who are to blame for all our woe, ‘America’s economic elite’. (Who are these sinister folk? Once again, the author is silent. Apparently we’re supposed to know instinctively who these beneficiaries of the Two Minute Hate might be.)

The whole reason the 401k was invented was because people were tired of putting their economic future in the hands of people whose incentives were all pointed the wrong way. I’d rather have a lump of money that I can manage myself than depend on the probity of pension fund managers (and, whoever ‘America’s economic elite’ might be, I strongly suspect that pension fund managers are in that number).

Consider how we 401(k) holders behave as investors. How many of us thought to sue Wells Fargo after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau revealed that the bank had created millions of fake credit card and bank accounts? Or to push our fund managers to do so for us? How many of us call up our fund managers after a quarter, a year or a decade in which we underperformed the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index to renegotiate our fees? Or even to switch managers? How many of us even know how our funds performed relative to the S.&P. 500?

Well, I do. That’s what being an investor is all about. However little influence we may have on a 401k fund manager, I would bet you money that it’s less than the influence we would have on the pension fund manager of a defined-benefit pension. Just think about that for a second and you’ll see it’s true.

At bottom, the problem is structural. We are to our investees and investment managers what nonunionized, “right to work” workers are to their employers: alone and devoid of leverage to negotiate. That stands in sharp contrast to traditional pensions, which, like unions, are collective and centrally managed.

And there you have the mask lifted at last. This is just an apologia for ‘collectively and centrally managed’ pensions, one more step on the road to a ‘collectively and centrally managed’ life. Wanting to be in control of our own destiny (and, despite the trash talk in the article, a 401k gives people a lot more control than a centrally managed pension fund) is a ‘structural problem’.

And the elephant in the room is the fact that almost all defined-benefit pensions have a certain minimum time in service — the one time I worked for a defined-benefit pension company, EDS, it was five years — whereas with a 401k any money you have in the account goes with you when you leave (and can be converted into an IRA that you can actively manage to your heart’s content) even if it’s only a month or so.

Remember, these are the days of employee mobility, where people jump from job to job as often as they like (or need to do), rather than spending decades in the same fabric-covered box. The longest time I ever worked for a single employer in my working life was the six years I spent in the Navy — for which I got no pension benefit; nor would I have gotten it for any other job I’d held except for that five years with EDS (which doesn’t translate to much of a pension benefit, let me tell you). Looking back on it, the existence of the 401k is the reason I have any pension pot at all.

Eventually we get to the real villains of the piece: ‘the Kochs and their allies’. That tells you everything you need to know about the author — and his chosen vehicle, the New York Times.

Why Did It Take Two Weeks To Discover Parkland Students’ Astroturfing?

3rd March 2018

Read it.

What’s striking about all this isn’t the organization. If you start reading books about organizing, it’s clear how it all works. But no journalist covering the story wrote about this stuff for two weeks. Instead, every story was about the Parkland kids being magically effective.

…

The real tip-off should have been the $500,000 donations from Winfrey and Clooney. Big celebrities don’t give huge money to strangers on a whim. Somebody who knows Winfrey and Clooney called them and asked. But the press’s response was to be ever more impressed with the kids.

…

But it’s not just a mainstream media problem. None of the righty outlets writing about Parkland picked up on the clear evidence that professional organizers were backing the Parkland kids, either. Instead, they objected to the front-and-centering of minor kids as unseemly, which does no good: Lefties aren’t going to listen, and it doesn’t educate the Right to counter.

In other words, this was a carefully calculated and professionally run campaign to look like ‘spontaneous uprising by the oppressed’, the very thing that Lefty functionaries spend their lives doing. It’s no accident that Barack Obama’s first job out of school was ‘community organizer’.

The Liberal Media’s Hypocrisy: Imagine If Jared Kushner Were a Kennedy

3rd March 2018

Read it.

It is remarkable to see the headlines about presidential aides Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump in the liberal media. The son-in-law and daughter of President Trump are now getting routinely hammered in The Washington Post, The New York Times, on CNN and even in The Wall Street Journal editorial pages, the latter decidedly not in the “liberal media” category.

But what is particularly noticeable is the reluctance to apply the same standards to presidential or other political relatives – if they are liberals.

Yes, Bacon Really Is Killing Us

3rd March 2018

Read it.

Women and minorities hardest hit, film at 11, etc. etc.

This is from The Guardian, so it’s full of semi-socialist hand-wringing. These people won’t be happy until we all subsist on green tea (fair-traded) and tofu (organically locally sourced).

Most of these ‘studies’ either depend on data from lab animals (if you’re not a lab animal, I’d say you’re pretty safe) or on statistical slices that say doing behavior X increases your cancer from Y to Z. The problem with that is the classical mistake of confusing correlation with causation. There are so many variables in the way individuals live there lives that picking one variable out of the mix and pretending that it’s the most important is almost the exact inverse of what true science ought to be. And this is exacerbated by running through the mush-for-brains of ‘journalism’, which never met a possible panic that it didn’t like.

Sheesh.

The liberal media were jubilant when news broke Wednesday morning that Dick’s Sporting Goods planned to stop selling AR-15’s at all their stores and would impose age restrictions on those looking to purchase a weapon. Melber dishonestly used the 1991 words of former Chief Justice Warren Burger, who said on PBS that “(2A) has been the subject of one of the greatest pieces of fraud … that I have ever seen in my lifetime,” as his lead-in.

Melber didn’t note that Chief Justice Burger had retired five years earlier, that he never considered a case directly relating to the Second Amendment’s substance on the bench, or that Burger, in that interview, stated a clearly fringe view that “If I were writing the Bill of Rights now, there wouldn’t be any such thing as the Second Amendment.”

Why Can’t People Hear What Jordan Peterson Is Saying?

26th February 2018

Conor Friedersdork commits the ThoughtCrime of Noticing.

My first introduction to Jordan B. Peterson, a University of Toronto clinical psychologist, came by way of an interview that began trending on social media last week. Peterson was pressed by the British journalist Cathy Newman to explain several of his controversial views. But what struck me, far more than any position he took, was the method his interviewer employed. It was the most prominent, striking example I’ve seen yet of an unfortunate trend in modern communication.

First, a person says something. Then, another person restates what they purportedly said so as to make it seem as if their view is as offensive, hostile, or absurd.

Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and various Fox News hosts all feature and reward this rhetorical technique. And the Peterson interview has so many moments of this kind that each successive example calls attention to itself until the attentive viewer can’t help but wonder what drives the interviewer to keep inflating the nature of Peterson’s claims, instead of addressing what he actually said.

Scott Adams has turned this into a verbal tag: Whenever somebody does this to him, he responds ‘Now, don’t try to Cathy Newman me….’

Trump Tax Break for ‘Hardworking Families’ Hands $29bn Profit Boost to One of World’s Richest Men

26th February 2018

Read it.

The article assumes, and assumes that the reader agrees, that this is ipso facto a bad thing.

No thought or discussion is given to the base fact that it consists of the government taking less of the company’s profit than it otherwise would have. Apparently decreased government theft is a serious moral failing.

Or perhaps it’s the fact that cutting taxes not only helps poor people but rich people as well, which it can’t fail to do since the rich are the ones who pay most of the taxes after all. Apparently it’s a moral failing as well to help poor people if there’s any possibility that a rich person might benefit as well.

And of course nobody bothers to mention that Buffet could just write a check to the IRS if he were seriously bothered about all the money he’s making. Yet he never does, and nobody ever notices.

NYT: Cryptocurrencies Are Sexist

26th February 2018

Steve Sailer fisks one of the Grey Lady’s finest.

Obviously, crypto-currencies (which may blow up the world or make it much better, don’t ask me, I don’t know) are totally sexist. The only reason Satoshi Nakamoto’s idea has swept the world is because his strong handshake, curly blond hair, red beard, green eyes, mole on his upper lip, Heidelberg dueling scar on his left cheek, gold tooth, missing last joint of his ring finger on his left hand, discreet skull & bones 322 tattoo on his right wrist, and deep gravelly voice with a Frisian accent gives Satoshi his White Male Privilege.

Velshi And Ruhle: Trump’s CPAC Speech Sounded Like Fidel Castro

23rd February 2018

Read it.

The sad thing is that they have no idea what they’re talking about. They are utterly ignorant of what Trump was trying to say, and utterly ignorant of the profound differences between Trump and, for example, Fidel Castro.

The ironic thing is that in any other context they would have nothing but good to say of Fidel Castro.

Esquire Article on ‘Black Panther’ Actor Takes Cheap Shots at Trump

Neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups have multiplied under Trump, report finds  The implication being, of course, that this is somehow all Trump’s fault — for which, of course, they have no evidence, merely proglodyte assumptions.

NYU Fires Cooks for Serving Watermelon Water and Ribs at Black History Month Event

Blue states — where even the food is racist.

Speaking as a white guy who grew up in Indiana eating watermelon and ribs, I’ll be happy to claim them for white people.

I don’t know of any non-black people who actually eat chitlins and collard greens, so I don’t see what the problem is there.

Children’s Crusade Comes to CNN

22nd February 2018

Scott Johnson of Power Line pulls back the curtain.

Last night CNN took up the 2018 children’s crusade that is intended to produce gun control where previously there has only been left-wing frustration. We are counseled to “do something” in a tone of unanswerable indignation. The volume is turned up to ear-shattering levels in lieu of traditional means of persuasion. In Minneapolis, students badly in need of the tools of critical thinking took the day off from school to wave slogans such as “Regulation isn’t scary, getting shot is.” The mayor joined the parade. On CNN, Senator Rubio faced up to the mob while Senator Nelson showed that he too had been shortchanged in the critical thinking department.

RealClear Politics has posted local television video of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Colton Haab. Haab says he was approached by CNN to ask a question at last night’s “town hall” but decided not to after the network gave him a “scripted question” in lieu of one he wrote himself. According to the report, Haab is a member of the Junior ROTC who shielded his fellow students while the school was under attack from the shooter, said he was going to ask about using veterans as armed security guards. He appears to be an impressive young man.

This morning CNN issued a statement to the effect “that it did not, and does not, script any questions for town hall meetings, ever.” I’m surprised to see CNN disputing one of the children possessing absolute moral authority, but perhaps Haab lost his immunity somewhere along the way.

Controversy Erupts Over Whether John Oliver Can Say ‘We’ and ‘Us’ When Referring to America

21st February 2018

Read it.

The only problem is, John Oliver isn’t American. He’s not American by birth and he’s not American by paperwork. He holds a green card and is married to an American, but he himself is not a legal citizen of the United States. He doesn’t vote, he doesn’t qualify for a slew of American welfare programs, and he can’t advocate to bring family members over to the US. The only thing that makes him ‘American’ is his weekly platform that allows him to pontificate about politics and flex a Constitutionally-endowed right to say what’s on his mind.

And about time, too. Late-night beta males like Oliver, Kimmel, and Colbert may have a lot in common with the Obamacare pajama boy but not with the bulk of real Americans.

This wasn’t lost on Piers Morgan, a fellow British ex-pat who called Oliver out while watching his show.

“Watching John Oliver repeatedly say ‘we’ & ‘us’ when discussing America is comical,” he tweeted.
“Mate, you were born in the Midlands to a pair of Liverpudlian parents & speak in a thick Brummie accent. You’re about as American as cricket & mushy peas, you shameless old fraud!”

Pretty sad when you can get called out by Piers Morgan.
