Richard Blumenthal has been attacking internet services he doesn’t understand since before he was even a US Senator. It has carried over into his job as a Senator, and was abundantly obvious in his role as a co-sponsor for FOSTA. His hatred of the internet was on clear display during a hearing over FOSTA in which he flat out said that if smaller internet companies couldn’t put in place the kind of infrastructure required to comply with FOSTA, that they should go out of business. Blumenthal’s latest ridiculous bit of legislation lose your Section 230 protections. And while Blumenthal likes to pretend that the EARN IT Act doesn’t target encryption, he also lied about FOSTA and insisted it had no impact on CDA 230 (which it directly amended).

But Blumenthal has now taken his ridiculousness up a notch. Following the (legitimately concerning) reports that the suddenly incredibly popular videoconferencing software Zoom was not actually providing end-to-end encrypted video chats (despite its marketing claims), Blumenthal decided to step in and play the hero sending an angry letter to the company, while linking to the Intercept’s original story about Zoom’s misleading claims about encryption….

There’s no pleasing some people.

An Arlington, Virginia smoke shop owner defended a jailed employee who could face decades in prison for firing his weapon at a group of masked burglars, wounding one.

Hamzeh Abusharia, 33, was sleeping in a back room of Arlington Smoke Shop when he was awakened early Sunday morning by three masked juvenile suspects who had broken in to “steal cash and merchandise,” WJLA reported. Abusharia grabbed a gun and, according to police: “opened the door to the sales floor and discharged the weapon, striking one juvenile subject. The employee retreated to the back room but reentered the sales floor and discharged his weapon again as the subjects were attempting to flee the business.”

Abushariah reportedly faces charges of malicious wounding, violation of a protective order and reckless handling of a firearm.

Coronavirus deaths leveled off in South Korea.

That’s because people in Korea could easily find out if they had the disease. There are hundreds of testing locations—even pop-up drive-thru testing centers.

Because Koreans got tested, Korean doctors knew who needed to be isolated and who didn’t. As a result, Korea limited the disease without mass quarantines and shortages.

Not in America. In America, a shortage of COVID-19 tests has made it hard for people to get tested. Even those who show all the symptoms have a difficult time.

Why weren’t there enough tests?

“You never let a serious crisis go to waste,” Obama adviser Rahm Emanuel said during the country’s last major emergency. Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is bringing this noxious idea back as she uses the coronavirus pandemic to permanently stamp identity politics on corporate America.

Pelosi’s coronavirus relief bill is a veritable pork barrel for programs that would force corporations receiving government aid to implement “diversity and inclusion” initiatives that have nothing to do with combating COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, and preventing its spread.

Congressional Democrats apparently count on the media to conceal the reason for the failure of the relief package on the floor of the Senate this week. The absurdly irrelevant provisions that Dems seek to incorporate to further the progressive takeover of the United States are meant to remain a deep secret. The current crisis — it’s not meant to go to waste, in the usual reckoning of the thought leaders of the Democratic Party.

The Democrats seem intent on using this opportunity to push everything they ever wanted into a 1,119-page bill.

The problem with the coronavirus situation has two parts:

1. The people who are making the decisions to effectively shut down the economy are not the people who are going to most suffer the effects of those decisions. Politicians will still receive their paychecks, academics will still receive their paychecks, ‘journalists’ will still receive their paychecks, highly-computerized professionals who can work from home will still receive their paychecks, so it’s very easy for them to say HEY, EVERYBODY, STAY IN YOUR HOUSE FOR A MONTH because they can do that and it’s no more than an inconvenience.
2. The incentives for elected officials are all going the wrong way. If they overreact and overreach and things turn out not to be as bad as they are predicting, nobody (besides people like me) will blame them, but if they underreact, and people get the disease and die, it lays them open to accusations of Not Doing Enough — and don’t think they don’t know that. So there is no downside for them in overreacting and shutting everything down, even if it hurts people that didn’t actually need to get hurt.

Please call your local politicians and plead with them not to overreact. The future you save may be your own.

Steve has already commented on this, but I want to amplify the point. Yesterday Senate Democrats filibustered the Trump administration’s economic bailout bill. The key vote was 47-47, with every Democrat voting for the filibuster. You’ve got to hand it to the Democrats: when they decide to jump off a cliff, they do it together.

The $1 trillion+ bailout was the sort of bill the Democrats would normally love. So, what was their problem? It didn’t include enough of their pet hobby horses.

Leaders from the White House and both parties of the Senate spent days negotiating a $1.4 trillion “Phase Three” stimulus package to alleviate the economic effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. Then House Speaker Nancy Pelosi flew in from her vacation to scuttle the entire agreement Sunday.

“The build-up to this is that we had a high level of bipartisanship over the last 48 hours,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said. “And then, all of a sudden, the Democratic leader and the speaker of the House shows up … and we’re back to square one,” he said, referring to Schumer and Pelosi.
