It looks as if the government is returning to its old habits of trying to exploit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to attack conservative nonprofits.
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) is urging IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig “to review the tax-exempt status of Turning Point USA [TPUSA],” according to CNBC. The reason for this push was asinine: “Whitehouse said [in a letter that] the nonprofit student group should have its tax-exempt status reviewed because he believes they broke Covid regulations when it reportedly hosted two large events in Florida.” Conservative activist Charlie Kirk is president of the group. Kirk is also a member on the board of advisors for the MRC’s Free Speech America project.
Whitehouse’s push for the IRS to zero in on TPUSA sounds eerily similar to that “scandal that erupted in 2013 when the IRS was found to be targeting conservative organizations for harassment.”

The United States could not make enough military equipment fast enough to sustain its military in the event of a major war. While much thought has been given to how a great power conflict might erupt or play out, far less has been written on how the U.S. industrial base could sustain U.S. wartime equipment losses in such a conflict.
Our study at the Center for Strategic and International Studies found that it would take many years to replace current inventories, even at surge production rates. And the situation is not getting better as industry consolidation has squeezed out excess capacity. The Navy would probably face the biggest problem. Each ship lost would be, effectively, irreplaceable during the conflict.

Going forward, I think any president facing a House of Representatives in which his or her party is in the minority stands about a 50-50 chance of being impeached in such a session. If that’s true, then the odds of another president being impeached twice at some point in the next twenty years are pretty good.
It might even happen to Joe Biden, if he lives long enough.

The states siphoned off 21 percent of gasoline taxes and other highway user fees to pay for mass transit and other non-highway activities in 2019, according to table SDF of the 2019 Highway Statistics, which was posted this week by the Federal Highway Administration. The table shows that $9.8 billion in highway user fees were spent on transit and $15.1 billion were spent on other non-highway activities for a total of nearly $25 billion out of the $120 billion collected by the states from highway users.

Under Minnesota law, the state’s Department of Education promulgates standards for K-12 public schools in a number of categories. The benchmarks for each category are revised by committee every ten years. This year, the Social Studies standard is being revised. The committee undertaking the revision, as you would expect in the Tim Walz administration, is hard left.

In December, the first month after Donald Trump’s loss, the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index slumped 5.5 points to 95.9, falling below the average Index value since 1973 of 98, and missing expectations of a triple digit print. Nine of the 10 Index components declined and only one improved. Of note, owners expecting better business conditions over the next six months tumbled by a whopping 24 points to a net negative 16%, realizing that a Democrat admin is hardly conducive to small business growth.
Looks as if somebody is paying attention.

With ridership stuck at around 37 percent of 2019 levels, transit advocates have stopped claiming that transit is energy-efficient and climate-friendly. Even in 2019, transit wasn’t particularly green, but the fall-off in ridership associated with the pandemic has completely destroyed any claim that transit agencies may have that they save energy by providing an alternative to the automobile.

- Joe Biden has hired at least 14 current or former executives from five major tech firms to serve in his administration or advise his transition team.
- The firms — Apple, Google, Amazon, Twitter and Facebook — have all clamped down this week on President Trump and Parler, a social media site popular with conservatives.
- Conservatives have long expressed concern over Biden and Democrats’ close ties to the major tech companies.
- Apple’s top lobbyist is a longtime Biden adviser. Former executives from Twitter and Facebook are also joining the Biden White House.

Nearly 24 hours have passed since yesterday’s chaos on Capitol Hill, which left one individual dead from a gunshot wound, and three others dead from unrelated medical emergencies on the Capitol grounds, and finally the Capitol Police have published a statement.
In it, Chief of Police Steven Sund denounced the thousands of demonstrators who later participated in the storming of the Capitol as criminals, condemning their “criminally riotous behavior.”
I guess that’s why the police let them through the barricades.

Her name was Hanako Abe. Raised in Fukushima, Japan, she lived through the devastating 2011 tsunami and subsequent nuclear disaster and emigrated to America to attend university. After graduation in 2018, she settled in San Francisco and worked in commercial real estate. She posted a smiling selfie on Instagram Thursday, announcing her excitement for a new year she would not live to see. Shortly after 4 PM Thursday, she was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking in the SOMA district of San Francisco, just 27 years old. Another woman, Elizabeth Platt, 60, was killed alongside Abe.
The driver, Troy McAlister, was intoxicated and driving a car he stole in Daly City two days earlier, from a woman he met on a dating app. Paroled in April after serving time for armed robbery, McAlister had been arrested several times since his release for various crimes including car theft, most recently on December 20. (He may in fact have been fleeing his latest burglary when he struck the women last Thursday, according to police). But none of these recent arrests resulted in any new charges brought by District Attorney Chesa Boudin’s office.

Opening the 117th Congress today, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver ended the opening prayer with the traditional “Amen” and then, so as to be inclusive added the nonsensical word “Awomen” as if “Amen” is somehow a gendered term. While my etymology is rusty, “Amen” comes from Hebrew, and passed through Greek and Latin before English usage and it means “so be it” or “as it is.” It has nothing to do with male or female, and “awomen” is a made-up word meant to placate the unthinking woke among us.
It is one such example, and there are countless more, of how utterly foolish and incompetent politicians are. The year 2020, henceforth “The Year That Shall Not Be Named”, was rife with examples of why we need to stop believing politicians are in any way suited to tell us how to run our lives.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) called the fatal Minneapolis police shooting of Dolal Idd a “state sanctioned murder”—despite body-camera footage showing that Idd fired at police first.
Idd, a 23-year-old black man, was inside his vehicle at a gas station parking lot when Minneapolis police surrounded him on December 30, suspecting he was involved in a felony gun crime.
In a rightly-ordered society, Omar would be expelled from Congress and barred from holding elective office, if not stripped of her naturalization and shipped back to Somalia where she belongs.

When the House of Representatives opened its session today, the invocation was delivered by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who I take it has been ordained as a minister. This is his conclusion, in which he invokes “the monotheistic God Brahma,” if I am hearing it right. (I know it makes no sense, but that is not the point for now.) Cleaver concludes–I kid you not!–with “Amen and Awomen.” I guess this is part of Nancy Pelosi’s new, gender-free House rules….

Democratic Congressional leaders are hoping that the alleged spy scandal swirling around California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell will just go away. They have successfully convinced the mainstream media that there is no story. Swalwell himself was confident enough to emerge on Twitter to suggest that any Republican who questions the validity of the 2020 election is a “traitor.” That level of tone-deafness from Swalwell is stunning but hardly surprising, given his history.
