A school board in Oregon will decide whether to fire two educators at a middle school who were placed on leave after producing a video proposing that schools recognize a student’s biological sex, not his or her gender identity.
Science teacher Katie Medart and assistant principal Rachel Damiano of North Middle School in Grants Pass, Oregon, filed a federal lawsuit saying the school’s disciplinary action in April violated their constitutional rights.
Time to leave.

America’s children have been raised in a system dedicated to the proposition that America itself is evil, a repository of discrimination and bigotry, a country founded in sin and steeped in cruelty.
This week, for example, the National Education Association, the single largest teachers union in the country, passed a resolution pledging to “Share and publicize … information already available on critical race theory (CRT)”; “Provide an already-created, in-depth, study that critiques empire, white supremacy, anti-Blackness, anti-Indigeneity, racism, patriarchy, cisheteropatriarchy, capitalism, ableism, anthropocentrism, and other forms of power and oppression at the intersections of our society”; and “Join with Black Lives Matter at School and the Zinn Education Project to call for a rally this year on October 14—George Floyd’s birthday—as a national day of action to teach lessons about structural racism and oppression.”
Stop sending your kids to government schools.

For the last 20 years, I’ve watched the United States government stoke fears of terrorism. Often, terrorists appeared on our screens and in print as context-free boogeymen. Once the security state had snatched up more funding and assaulted our liberties, we’d find out that the terrorists were blowback from some reckless foreign policy decision or were simply creatures of the FBI. Since my middle school days, the threat of terror has served as justification rather than motivation, while masquerading as the latter. So I felt, of all things, a bit nostalgic while watching the announcement of Biden’s domestic terror initiative.

People are fleeing California in general, and San Francisco in particular, in droves. As to San Francisco, the fundamental problem is lawlessness. Which means not just violent crime, which the city has in abundance, but a breakdown in the fundamental norms of civilization that make urban living possible.
The main problem is that San Francisco’s far-left city administration has decided not to prosecute theft. The result, naturally, is an epidemic of theft. Thus Target, for example, is now closing its San Francisco stores at 6 p.m.

Watching the Democratic Party press try to pretend that Joe Biden is a fully-functioning adult has been entertaining. To the extent that anyone sees Biden in action, that effort is futile. Thus, despite the press’s determination to pretend that all is well, people are figuring out that Biden is not all there.

America’s teachers’ unions are the country’s single most malign influence. They do more to promote leftist extremism, and do it more effectively, than anyone else. The teachers’ unions dominate the schools of education, from which most teachers come, and they control school board elections in most districts. In effect, they run the public schools, which is the main reason why the public schools are so bad.
Scott Adams blames the teachers’ unions for whatever systemic racism exists in the U.S.

If you wanted to find the group getting the rawest deal in 2021 America, you might start with small-business owners. Many are finding themselves working 60- or 80-hour weeks just to scrape by. During the height of COVID-19, these companies were especially beaten down. Between Jan. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2020, about 30% of U.S. small businesses closed, while total small-business revenue decreased by 31%, according to Economic Tracker. During the same period, the stock market boomed, and multinational corporations continued to thrive. The effects of this economic destruction are apparent in communities all over the country. Boxed-up storefronts on main streets across America are the norm.
Given this dynamic, it’s almost incomprehensible that Senate Republicans are about to help pass an infrastructure package that unleashes the IRS to collect more revenue through aggressive policing of small businesses.

President Joe Biden has a problem, and her name is Kamala Harris. The vice president has become a comic figure in today’s Washington—a politician given to missteps and unforced errors who inspires neither loyalty nor trust within her inner circle. She might have been Biden’s safest pick for running mate. But now she’s a liability for both the president and the Democratic Party.
It’s not just that Harris is unpopular. Her unique combination of falsity and incompetence generates negative press and endangers her dreams of succeeding Biden. For Harris, the month of June has been an extended replay of highlights from Veep, the HBO comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a clueless and floundering politician on the make. Only Harris isn’t laughing.

There is a lot of judicial news today. This one is hot off the press: a judge of the Hennepin County District Court has granted a motion for a writ of mandamus against the City of Minneapolis, ordering the city to “immediately take any and all necessary action” to increase the size of the Minneapolis Police Department. The case was brought by residents of crime-ridden North Minneapolis, represented by the Upper Midwest Law Center, on whose board I serve.
The petition for a writ of mandamus was predicated on a provision of the Minneapolis City Charter that requires the city to maintain a police force of at least 0.0017 employees per resident. The petitioners argued that the City’s force has fallen below that requirement and is projected to continue falling farther behind over the next year.

If Kamala Harris didn’t exist, the media would have to invent her. The mainstream media is determined to treat Joe Biden with kid gloves. Gossip about the White House seems largely off-limits and apparently not easy to come by without great effort.
But journalists love gossip and drama, so they seek them one level down from the Oval Office. And what’s more dramatic than a woman on track to becoming the first female president, but facing an uncertain path and sniping from sources who favor potential rivals?

This notion that someone could not show up to their job and work for a separate, self-interested entity while collecting a paycheck for the work they did not do is an anathema to most Americans. For public-sector employees, it’s simply “official time.”
Originally created within the 1978 Civil Service Reform Act, “official time” is a process in which public-sector employees are “released” from their official duties—the equivalent of receiving paid leave—so that they can work for their unions. The activities they do include negotiating collective bargaining agreements; filing and litigating superfluous grievance complaints; participating in labor-management discussions; and lobbying Congress.

I have taken up the issue of Joe Biden’s declining mental faculties by reference to the tale of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Everyone can see that the guy is naked. In his New York Post column this morning, Kyle Smith takes up the issue in a way that recalls the old Buddy Miles number “Them Changes” (“My mind is going through them changes…”).
Referring to Biden’s bizarre performance at last week, Smith observes that Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin must be giggling uncontrollably at their good fortune: “Suddenly the world’s greatest power is in the hands of a slightly dazed-looking fellow who seems like he is always just waking up from heavy anesthesia.”

The U.S. Justice Department’s civil rights division, headed by the new, radical assistant attorney general Kristen Clarke, filed a lawsuit on June 25 against Georgia. The Justice Department claimed the state’s recently enacted election reform law, SB 202, violates the 1965 Voting Rights Act because it discriminates against black Georgia voters. The complaint reads like a press release drafted by the Democratic National Committee instead of a serious lawsuit by an apolitical Justice Department.

The White House held a press conference on June 24 to announce a bipartisan infrastructure deal. It was going to be an easy win for the left, with more money, power, and control for Washington.
Instead, President Joe Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., all decided that this wasn’t good enough, and now the deal is on life support.
In separate statements, the three leading Democrats demanded that any bipartisan infrastructure bill be accompanied by a partisan spending package passed with the maneuver known as reconciliation.
The contents being discussed for reconciliation are a socialist wish list: upwards of $6 trillion in spending on the biggest expansion of the welfare state in generations, radical Green New Deal programs, massive amnesty for illegal immigrants, federal micromanagement of the economy, and more.
To make matters worse, it would be coupled with massive tax hikes that would kneecap the economic recovery.
Democrat cunning and Republican pusillanimity are no match for Democrat greed.

The only person who actually died at the January 6th protest was an unarmed veteran, shot by a Capitol policeman.
Similarly the name of every officer involved in a shooting that has tickled the antennae of the Black Lives Matter movement and its fellow travelers has been made public, in some cases forcing the officers and their families to flee their homes so as to avoid hostile protesters. Yet the officer who shot Babbitt remains unidentified and, as far as we know, employed by the Capitol Police.
Why is that?

It is, of course, possible that the top brass of the U.S. military has suddenly become supremely enlightened on questions of racial strife and racial identity in the U.S., and thus genuinely embraced theories that, until very recently, were the exclusive province of left-wing scholars at elite academic institutions. Given that all U.S. wars in the post-World War II era have been directed at predominantly non-white countries, which — like all wars — required a sustained demonization campaign of those enemy populations, having top Pentagon officials become leading anti-racism warriors would be quite a remarkable transformation indeed. But stranger things have happened, I suppose.

The Parent Teacher Association of Virginia sent a letter of intent to abolish the parent group of the nation’s top high school after a slate of candidates opposed to critical race theory won an election earlier this month.
The letter, sent to the Parent Teacher Student Association of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology on Wednesday, claims that the recently elected candidates skirted bylaws and created a “hostile environment” for members. This is the latest fallout between pro- and anti-critical race theory factions at the elite high school, which made headlines last fall after district officials abolished its entrance exam in an attempt to boost black and Hispanic enrollment.
The Virginia Parent Teacher Association would circumvent the results of the referendum on Fairfax County Public Schools if it decided to move forward with eliminating Thomas Jefferson’s parent board. Candidates opposed to Thomas Jefferson’s recent equity measures—such as the updated admissions process—won a majority on the association board.

Vice President Kamala Harris is not visiting the “epicenter of the crisis” at the U.S.-Mexico border on her first visit trip there since being tabbed to take charge of the immigration surge, according to Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.
Politico reported Wednesday that Harris will visit El Paso, Texas, on Friday.
“I don’t know why they chose El Paso. It’s not the epicenter of the crisis,” Rubio said Wednesday night on the Fox News.
El Paso is a far distance from the Rio Grande Valley sector where Republicans say the vast majority of border crossings are occurring.

Powerline has a post up today about President Biden’s recent remarks, in which he proposed fixing our nation’s recent crime wave with gun control. His statement was not entirely coherent, he wandered about a bit, and concluded with this: “Those who say the blood of Patriots, you know, and all the stuff about how we’re gonna have to move against the government … If you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons.” Now, I’m not suggesting that Mr. Biden intends to say whatever he just said. He might have intended that as the direct challenge to dissidents that it sounds like, but was slurring his words and was clearly confused. Hard to say, I suppose. But.
Imagine that President Trump had surrounded the Capitol Building with razor wire and armed soldiers. And then imagine that he said something like that… Imagine how CNN would respond to that. And the morning news shows, and the late-night talk shows, and basically everybody else; just imagine. They would be screaming from the rooftops that he was acting like a tyrant. And they would have a point.

Kristen Clarke, now the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, has filed a brief on behalf of the United States arguing that a West Virginia law barring boys from participating on girls’ sports teams violates Title VI and the Equal Protection Clause. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia cast a key vote confirming Clarke. Ed Whelan aptly calls this a case of no naïve deed going unpunished.
Clarke’s brief argues that the 11-year-old biological male who wants to try out for Bridgeport Middle School’s girls’ cross-country and track teams “is a girl.” Therefore, the argument goes, the West Virginia law unlawfully “targets girls who are transgender.”
