While the federal government can avoid some of the harmful effects of wage-setting by politicians, this executive order may provide a temporary—though limited—dose of economic reality.

At least within the current fiscal year, federal agencies’ budgets are limited by what Congress has allocated to them. Thus, having to pay certain workers more to do the exact same thing will force agencies to make some of the same decisions that businesses have to confront when policymakers set minimum wages above market wages.

The natural response of employers to government-imposed minimum wage hikes is to lay off workers or to shift the composition of their workforce to eliminate lower-skilled labor. Employers also respond by reducing or eliminating benefits like health insurance and retirement contributions and taking away scheduling flexibility.

But most of those things aren’t options for federal agencies. For starters, it takes about a year-and-a-half to fire a federal worker, and the convoluted and painstaking process takes so much time and effort on the part of managers that most have determined it’s not worth the effort—even if it does result in deadweight and adverse workers keeping their jobs.

Moreover, federal agencies have very little control over salary and benefits, and federal unions staunchly oppose anything that might result in less flexibility for federal workers.

Thus, federal departments are likely to have to cut back on services and on needed modernizations. In particular, this will most directly impact the Department of Defense and defense contractors.

In November, the Biden Administration released the President’s Management Agenda Vision, outlining its agenda to overhaul the federal workforce and its operations. At the top level are some goals all Americans should like, such as improving how citizens interact with the federal bureaucracy and rebuilding domestic industrial capacity. Other goals, as well as the methods of achieving them, reflect an expressly progressive ideology. If fully implemented, this risks further entrenching partisan politics into the machinery of the federal bureaucracy, undermining the ideals of a meritocratic and nonpartisan civil service, and misdirecting agency funding and activity away from their fundamental missions and toward costly ideological goals such as eliminating climate change. If we stay on this course, we will soon find it impossible to reform wasteful programs and inefficient institutions, even when principled advocates of limited government are elected.

On Monday the Department of Homeland Security issued an updated National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin, which purports to summarize the “Terrorism Threat to the U.S. Homeland”. It begins with a paragraph that, read carefully, should chill the blood of anyone who cherishes liberty.

On Friday, January 28, 2022, about 6:40 a.m. eastern standard time, the Fern Hollow bridge, which carried Forbes Avenue over the north side of Frick Park, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, experienced a structural failure. As a result, the 447-foot-long bridge fell approximately 100 feet into the park below. At the time of the collapse, a 2013 Ne?w Flyer articulated bus, operated by the Port Authority of Allegheny County, and four passenger vehicles were on the bridge. A fifth passenger vehicle drove off the east bridge abutment following the collapse and came to rest on its roof on the exposed ground below. As a result, 10 vehicle occupants sustained injuries.

On September 7, 2021, Warren dispatched a letter to Amazon in which she claimed that certain books sold by the internet giant contained “COVID-19 misinformation.” In her letter, Warren singled out “The Truth About COVID-19”as the most blatant example of “disinformation” about vaccines and treatments being “peddled” by Amazon, even including a screenshot of the book as shown on Amazon’s webpage.

The next day, the Massachusetts senator issued a press release, publicizing her letter to Amazon and posting a link to a copy of that letter on her government website. “Senator Warren is calling on Amazon to take aggressive action to stamp out COVID-19 misinformation,” the press release read.

After Warren issued her press release, national media widely publicized her letter, causing publisher Chelsea Green to immediately fear this would cause booksellers to stop stocking or promoting “The Truth About COVID-19.” Those concerns proved valid. On September 10, 2021, Barnes and Noble informed Chelsea Green via email that it would stop offering “The Truth About COVID-19” as an e-book. Barnes and Noble’s brick-and-mortar stores and most independent booksellers are also refusing to carry the book.

Additionally, while Amazon continues to sell the book, the online giant notified Chelsea Green it would not run ads promoting, or simply including, “The Truth About COVID-19.” Amazon also removed the book from the “medical work” category, where it had previously been listed. Amazon also stopped advertising “The Truth About COVID-19”to users whose purchase history would indicate an interest in the text.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said on Saturday it was fraud for GoFundMe to “commandeer” $9 million in donations sent to support protesting truckdrivers in Canada and that he will investigate what he called “deceptive practices” by the website.

GoFundMe took down the so-called Freedom Convoy’s page on Friday, saying it violated its terms of service. It said donors had two weeks to request a refund, then remaining funds would be disbursed to “credible and established charities.”

DeSantis, a Republican, said on Twitter it was fraud for GoFundMe to give the money “to causes of their own choosing,” and he would work with Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to investigate. “(T)hese donors should be given a refund.”

I did not know at the time that there was talk of turning to her, a California Supreme Court justice, when Bush’s attempt to get his Texas crony, Harriet Miers, on the court was crushed by real conservatives. He took the easier route, although not one of his first choosing, of nominating Samuel Alito to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. Brown persisted, not withdrawing her nomination in the face of Biden and his gang’s obstruction.
