President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., announced a debt limit deal Saturday, with a vote expected Wednesday in the House of Representatives.
Heritage Foundation experts scrutinized the text of the 99-page bill, including provisions related to spending, pro-growth policies, student loan cancellation, and work requirements for welfare. The following is their latest analysis of the Fiscal Responsibility Act.

In any case, the one thing nobody says is what I’m about to say, which is that income tax is absurd based on the government’s own preferred theories of economics. It’s so absurd as to be a parody of a rational taxation system and it sustains itself only through willful blindness to how absurd it really is.

Ten lighthouses that for generations have stood like sentinels along America’s shorelines protecting mariners from peril and guiding them to safety are being given away at no cost or sold at auction by the federal government.
The aim of the program run by the General Services Administration is to preserve the properties, most of which are more than a century old.

Between Matamoros, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas lies the Rio Grande river. On one side is the Matamoros migrant camp where thousands of illegal invaders prep for the invasion with the aid of American open borders non-profit groups, squatting in their own filth, fighting, shaking each other down and starting fires like those that killed 40 male migrants. Across is America.
At 160 feet wide and only 2 feet deep, the invaders have little trouble making their way across. Despite the slur ‘wetback’, little actual swimming is usually required. Past proposals to widen and deepen the river so it’s a tenth of a mile and twenty feet deep would have been fairly expensive, but was shut down by open borders advocates who claim the invaders might drown.
In one week in April, some 15,000 illegal invaders traversed the river. The media regularly features dramatic photos of migrants crossing the Rio Grande and offers sympathetic portrayals of the invaders such as the New York Times story: “Desperate Migrants on the Border: ‘I Should Just Swim Across.” The coverage often describes these invasions as “sudden” or “unexpected”.
But there’s nothing sudden or unexpected about them. They’re the work of the Coyote-in-Chief.

It wouldn’t be if it were imposed by a private party, although there might be other problems with it. But can a government entity require its employees to assent to a series of political propositions, and to take what is effectively a loyalty oath? I don’t think so.
That’s why my organization has moved to participate in the case of Henderson v. Springfield R-12 School District, now on appeal in the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, as an amicus. The Henderson case is horrifying, and yet typical of what is going on in contemporary America. Plaintiffs are school district employees who were required by the district to undergo “anti-racism” training. The district’s “training” was a series of Maoist struggle sessions.

The FBI had at least four criminal investigations into Hillary and Bill Clinton that were ultimately shut down months before the presidential election in 2016, a new Justice Department report reveals – and Republicans want to reopen those probes.
A long-awaited report by Special Counsel John Durham released on Monday shows the FBI began investigating claims in late 2014 from a ‘well-placed’ confidential source that two foreign governments were trying to make illegal donations to buy influence with Hillary during her presidential campaign.
Investigators were even offered documents of one alleged $2,700 illegal contribution that led to a ‘substantial’ further donation.

Imagine if, after the Supreme Court’s racial integration decision Brown v. Board of Education, the segregationist advocacy groups and Southern senators had showed up outside the Supreme Court to announce legislation to change the number of justices. Or if, after the Supreme Court’s ruling in Bush v. Gore, the Democrats had tried to change the outcome by adding justices to the court in hope of achieving a different result.
There’d be justifiable outrage at interference with judicial independence, and with outcome-based disappointment driving process-based changes. And there’d be understandable skepticism about whether such court-packing would lead to a never-ending cycle of each new Congressional majority changing the rules to add justices who agreed with them to the high court, eviscerating the judiciary’s constitutional role as a check and balance to the other branches of government.
On Tuesday, Senators Markey and Warren of Massachusetts and Tina Smith of Minnesota, along with representatives Jerrold Nadler, Hank Johnson, Cori Bush, and Adam Schiff, Democrats all, introduced the Judiciary Act of 2023, which would add four justices to create a 13-member Supreme Court.

Eight states have enacted new education choice policies or have expanded existing ones so far this year, including Indiana, Montana, and South Carolina earlier this month alone.
Of the eight, four states—Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, and Utah—enacted school choice policies that will be available to all K-12 students, joining Arizona and West Virginia in making every child eligible for education savings accounts or ESA-like policies that allow families to choose the learning environments that align with their values and work best for their children.
Indiana came close by expanding eligibility for its voucher and tax-credit scholarship policies to about 97% of K-12 students statewide. South Carolina’s new ESA is limited to low- and middle-income families, while Montana’s new ESA will expand education options for students with special needs.
More states have adopted robust education choice policies this year than ever before—and several state legislatures are still in session. This week, three state legislatures are making progress toward adopting new education choice policies or significantly expanding existing ones.

Special counsel John Durham, in a widely anticipated report Monday, condemned the Justice Department and FBI for their conduct in the “Russian collusion” investigation of Donald Trump.
Durham’s investigation looked at the origins of Crossfire Hurricane, the name of the FBI probe of whether Trump or his 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russians to win the election.
The investigation was taken over by special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI director, after Trump was elected president. Mueller’s team concluded there was no evidence of conspiracy or collusion between Trump or his campaign and Russia.

Joel Kotkin.
We will soon be leaving the first quarter of the 21st century behind us. But in the minds of our transportation planners, the punditry, and some real estate interests, the way forward is actually to step back to the glories of the 19th century. At the state level, and most significantly in Washington, we are about to pour an unprecedented $20 billion more into transit, especially subways and other trains. This is folly: changing demographics and geography, as well as new technologies, suggest a very different future for how most of us get around. We are simply not going to become a nation of train travelers, and it would be pointless—not to say destructive—to try.
There’s nothing new here. Much of the national media, in chorus with urban political and economic leaders, have been pushing these train-focused approaches since the days of Jimmy Carter. The stated aim is usually to move Americans away from their supposedly evil and pernicious love of the private automobile. Americans drive not because they irrationally love cars—although some do—but because it is simply by far the best way to get around.
Trains take you from where you aren’t to where you don’t want to be. That was fine when the alternative was horses or bicycles, but we have moved beyond that now.

Well, probably not all. But when did public school education become, on net, a force for evil? At some time after public sector unions were legalized in, as I recall, the 1960s. One of the worst mistakes in the history of our democracy. Now, the teachers’ unions have mobilized teachers as left-wing activists, and a great many of those who were not comfortable with that politicization have left the profession.

The Democratic Party press has done its best to suppress the Joe Biden corruption story, beginning with the “Dirty 51” letter that successfully blocked the story during the 2020 presidential campaign, and continuing up to the present day. Moreover, when the issue has been discussed, it has far too often been framed as relating to Hunter Biden, as though Hunter, an unemployable and degenerate crackhead, had anything to sell to a foreign power. As I have written many times, no one has ever bribed Hunter Biden.

President Biden refuses to do his job. He has erased our southern border and facilitated the systematic invasion of our country by illegal aliens from all over the world. With the imminent expiration of Title 42, the invasion he has facilitated seems to be approaching a peak, but you never know. It can get worse.
We look on as helpless bystanders. His excuses and lies grow increasingly absurd, if that is possible, which it probably isn’t. Biden speaks as though he himself is an innocent bystander to the catastrophe he has wrought: “It’s going to be chaotic for a while.”
He would have us believe he can’t do anything about it. What is to be done with a president of the United States who refuses to do his job?

What will President Biden do if his son is indicted by the federal prosecutor in Delaware?
That’s one of three questions looming over U.S. Attorney David Weiss’ fateful choice.
The second is whether the indictment will go after a larger, coordinated family scheme of influence peddling or confine itself to smaller, tightly-confined issues like lying to get a gun permit and not registering as a foreign lobbyist.
The third is whether Attorney General Merrick Garland will approve Weiss’ proposed charges.
Significant political calculations follow from those decisions.
Even if he is, nothing will come of it. The Crust take care of their own.

Meanwhile, the Obamacare exchange will attempt to drive up voter registration, while agencies within the Justice Department have acted to ensure that prisoners in federal custody may cast a ballot if eligible.
President Joe Biden’s Executive Order 14019, which requires federal agencies to get involved in boosting voter participation, is a little over 2 years old.
However, members of Congress, the press, and watchdog groups unsuccessfully have sought information on how Biden’s order is being implemented. The Justice Department has claimed presidential privilege to shield related documents from release.

In 2004, Denver voters approved spending $4.8 billion building six new rail transit lines, and the first line opened ten years ago. This was soon followed by four more to the gushing praise of various outsiders.
Inside Denver, however, people are beginning to realize that the whole thing was a miserable failure, suffering massive cost overruns and never attaining its ridership projections. The West line, which had its tenth anniversary last week, never carried as many passengers as were projected in its first year. It’s too bad that the reporters who are questioning this now weren’t asking the same questions in 2004.
Denver’s Regional Transit District (RTD) suffers from numerous problems that can be traced back to its rail construction projects. It is heavily in debt and doesn’t have the money or the borrowing power to build the last rail line it promised in 2004. It also doesn’t have enough money to pay enough drivers to keep its trains and buses running, and staff shortages have led to many delays and reduced service. The rail lines never attracted enough riders to put a dent in traffic congestion or reduce air pollution before the pandemic.

Of all living Americans, Angela Davis may have the most disgraceful history. She is a Communist–her description, not mine; she was twice the Communist Party’s candidate for vice president, and was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union. She once participated in the murder of a judge in California. She was acquitted of the crime by a biased jury, but there was never any serious doubt about her guilt: the murder and associated crimes were perpetrated with her guns.
Since then, Davis has gone on to a lucrative career as a taxpayer-supported professor. Above all, she has gotten rich on the college lecture circuit. Universities pay her tens of thousands of dollars to deliver an hour-long rant against free enterprise. Nothing original, just warmed-over Marxism. Apparently today’s college students are too dumb to notice the irony.
