One of the things every liberal must believe is Progress, a quasi-religious faith which G.K. Chesterton mocked as “people who prefer Thursday to Wednesday because it is Thursday.” The apostles of Progress would have us believe that 1959 — the year I was born — was a nightmare dystopia, despite those snazy new Chevy station wagons, and that if Donald Trump gets elected in November, we are all going back to 1959.
I remember 1959. I prefer it to now.
Well, sonny, lemme tell you, it was plenty rough. Back in those days, people had to pay their own bills, so they worked what were called “full-time jobs,” instead of hustling as DoorDash drivers or peddling naked selfies on OnlyFans. Yes, I remember when gas was less than $3 a gallon and interest on the national debt was less than a trillion dollars a year . . .
Sometimes the old ways are best.

A while back, I noted that demonic–meaning “caused by demons”–insanity had afflicted many people on Earth, and I said that in order to keep track of the progress of increasing insanity, it could be useful to watch Keith Olbermann, fired ESPN and MSNBC personality and dispenser of absurd theories that conflict with commonly-known facts. Not long ago, he claimed no one should believe Representative Dr. Ronny Jackson, MD, the former White House physician who is now Donald Trump’s primary care provider. Jackson described Trump’s bullet wound, and Olbermann made up two weird claims. He said Jackson was not a medical doctor, and then he said he had no license. Both libels originated either in hell or in Olbermann’s own disrupted psyche.
Olbermann has proven to be a pretty good barometer of lunacy. Recently, some baseball players mimicked Trump’s “Fight! Fight! Fight!” shooting response, and Olbermann said they should be banned from baseball and their stadium should be razed. He also said the franchise should be confiscated.
Nothing crazy there. Nope. And definitely nothing that would inspire arson or murder.
Leftists love confiscation. It’s like a fetish with them. Money. Guns. Land. You name it.

Who did Amanpour & Co. invite on to discuss the supposed “Christian Nationalism” running rampant within Project 2025, the feared, loathed, seldom read presidential blueprint issued by the Heritage Foundation? Nobody but Kristin Kobes Du Mez, the author of something called Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation.
Bianna Golodryga was the fill-in host on Christiane Amanpour’s political talk show (whose episodes run on tax-funded PBS after first airing on CNN International) and set up the interview between liberal author Kristin Kobes Du Mez and liberal journalist Michel Martin by borrowing Du Mez’s subtitle: “Historian Kristin Kobes Du Mez tells Michel Martin how white evangelicals how white evangelicals have corrupted a faith and fractured a nation.”
Golodryga justified the show’s paranoid liberal focus on Project 2025 by noting “the contributors of the conservative playbook include some of [Trump’s closest political advisers, as well as organizations with Christian nationalist leanings.”

Big Lots said in a June filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it plans to open three stores nationwide this year and close 35 to 40.
Prior to the announcement, Big Lots had 1,392 stores throughout the United States.
In its SEC filing, the Columbus, Ohio-headquartered company said the planned closures follow “macroeconomic challenges” within the U.S. economy, such as inflation, that had “adversely impacted” the buying power of its customers.
The retailer also warned in its SEC filing that, based on current cash and liquidity projections, it has “substantial doubts” about its ability to continue. It also cited a “significant likelihood” that Big Lots won’t meet the terms of a 2022 credit agreement.

Lufkin believes lifestyle is key to preventing chronic disease and writes about his advice in the new book, “Lies I Taught in Medical School: How Conventional Medicine Is Making You Sicker and What You Can Do to Save Your Own Life.”
He doesn’t believe they’re intentional lies since medical knowledge is always evolving and doctors have to constantly re-evaluate things they thought were true. But he’s critical of what he calls the “currently accepted dogma” in medical school, which is often presented without any alternative theories, he notes.

ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.
I was unsure what to do for a show this week. The nonstop firehose of craziness from the political class has fried my brain a bit. That and the events of the last week have broken the gauge on my clown meter. The absurdity of the Kamala Harris campaign on the heels of Nursing Home Joe getting bumped off in a midnight coup highlights the utter fakeness of our politics.
Instead of trying to make any sense of it, I just turned the mic on and started talking for an hour in a drug fueled stream of consciousness. Okay, there were no drugs involved, even though drugs would make it easier to follow the election. Instead, I meandered around from one topic to another, all revolving around the fact that our politics have been fake and gay for a long time.
In fact, I was going to call the show “Fake & Gay” but that ran into problems with the platforms I post this to, so I went with something less salty. That is, however, the prevailing sentiment of the show. It is not just that things are fake now, but they have been fake for a long time. What we are seeing now is the approach to peak fakeness, which most likely comes just before collapse.

As Democrats have mobilized to support President Joe Biden’s pick for a successor in Kamala Harris following his announcement last weekend that he would not seek reelection, the Internet would seem to show that influencers have decided to embrace Harris’ eclectic and often unserious persona. “Kamala is brat” was tweeted by singer Charli XCX and has been a meme embraced by the campaign. This is likely in a desire to galvanize young people, a coalition that had been decisively unenthused by Joe Biden’s campaign, to come out to vote for Harris. However, the cost may be swing voters.

Princeton University is on the verge of promoting a professor who participated in the occupation of a campus building that disrupted university operations and led to more than a dozen arrests, according to an email reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
The university has recommended that the classics scholar Dan-el Padilla Peralta, who along with 13 anti-Israel student protesters stormed Princeton’s historic Clio Hall in April, be promoted from associate to full professor, pending the approval of the university’s board of trustees. Peralta already has tenure, but the promotion would make him eligible for university leadership roles, including deanships.
“I’m sure you will want to join me in congratulating Dan-el on his promotion to a full professorship,” the chair of the classics department, Barbara Graziosi, wrote to her colleagues on July 18. “This is still ‘unofficial’ news, because the Board of Trustees will have to rubber stamp the recommendation made by the committee that oversees promotions, but I was told I am allowed to share the news internally and do so with glee.”

One of the most damaging impacts of Illinois’ people loss to other states is the destruction of Illinois’ tax base. When people leave in a given year, they take their incomes (adjusted gross incomes, or AGI) with them, and that means the state’s tax base suffers.
A smaller tax base, everything else equal, means less tax revenues for safety, education, road repair and every other core government service – or, as is typically the case in Illinois, more debts and more tax hikes.
Unfortunately, Illinois’ out-migration problem is much bigger than just a one year loss: the state has lost people and AGI every single year since at least 2000, the first year of Wirepoints’ out-migration analysis. The AGI losses pile up on top of each other year after year, slashing Illinois’ tax revenue growth and destroying Illinois’ overall prosperity.
Time to leave.

ZMan says the quiet part out loud.
Back during the great interregnum, when issues like race, affirmative action, and demographics could be discussed, it was obvious that the main failure of affirmative action programs was not that they did not result in more blacks in the targeted area, but that the blacks themselves often resented it. Everyone just assumed that these people got where they were through affirmative action, rather than merit, so those who thought they earned it hated the stigma that came with affirmative action.
It is an important and overlooked part of race politics. The white saviors who create and implement these race programs are not counting heads looking for the correct number of brown people. They are looking for salvation. That comes, they assume, when the black recipients of their programs are grateful to the people behind them. The “failure” of affirmative action was that it created black resentment, the exact opposite of what the white saviors were expecting.
That aside, there were second and third order effects that no one thought to consider, and they also contained an internal contradiction that could not be covered up with moral language. You cannot have a meritocratic, egalitarian society and at the same time have special rights for certain people based on dubious claims about the suffering of their ancestors. Good intentions and righteous indignation could not obscure this reality nor stop people from acting on it.

A Harris campaign official said the campaign has “made a deliberate decision to brand all of Trump’s policies” as “Project 2025,” since they believe “it has stuck with voters.”
Since entering the presidential race Sunday, Harris and her campaign have repeatedly tried to link Project 2025 to Trump, despite the former president’s pushback.

It would be incompetently governed, for few people of quality would choose a life of public service. It would not have much in the way of economic dynamism; its crafts and industries would be pedestrian and unchanging; its technology second rate.” Look around and say it is not so.

Environmental groups represented on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s own environmental justice council are among the largest beneficiaries of the president’s environmental programs, collectively receiving hundreds of millions of dollars, according to a database of federal grants reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
In total, four leading environmental justice organizations—WE ACT for Environmental Justice, the Bullard Center for Environmental & Climate Justice at Texas Southern University, the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, and Kean University’s Center for the Urban Environment—have been awarded a staggering $229 million in Environmental Protection Agency grants and have been named as partners to grantees awarded another $200 million.
Leaders of those groups serve on the White House’s so-called Environmental Justice Advisory Council, which is formally housed at EPA, the same agency doling out the grants. The council provides the administration with “independent advice and recommendations on how to address current and historic environmental injustice,” the White House description notes.
