Off the Rails: Amtrak Slashes 20% of Management in $100 Million Savings

10th May 2025

Read it.

Amtrak is cutting roughly 20% of its senior management positions, aiming to reduce expenses amid uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s infrastructure investment plans, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The federally-owned passenger railroad – which operates as a for-profit entity, is targeting $100 million in annual cost reductions through these cuts, a source disclosed anonymously, sharing details not publicly announced.

In an official statement, Amtrak confirmed the elimination of roughly 450 management roles, reiterating the goal of achieving $100 million in yearly savings. The company emphasized these layoffs only impact corporate-level positions and assured that operational railroad jobs would remain unaffected. As of 2024, Amtrak employs approximately 22,700 people. (what!?)

Protecting Medicaid Means Ending Preferential Federal Funding

10th May 2025

Read it.

The liberals and the mainstream media are using scare tactics to upend efforts to bring much-needed transparency, accountability, and fairness to the Medicaid program. In reality, it is the blind defense of the status quo that will ultimately undermine the Medicaid program for those who need it.

A key proposal being considered by the House is whether federal funding for Medicaid expansion should remain as is or whether it is time for Congress to bring federal funding for this added category of enrollees in line with other Medicaid populations.

This debate ties back to Obamacare where the authors not only attempted to bribe the states to expand their Medicaid programs with an enormous bump in federal support but also attempted to punish those states that did not expand by threatening to remove all their Medicaid funding. The Supreme Court stepped in and struck the provision that would have states lose all their Medicaid funding but left in place the new federal enhanced funding.

Tesla Tantrums: Consumer Choices in the Age of Performative Ethics

10th May 2025

Read it.

Dealerships have been torched, vehicles vandalized, and owners accosted in parking lots by sanctimonious citizens, sneering moral condemnation.

It is not necessary to be a shareholder, Tesla owner, or admirer of Elon Musk to find this troubling. The issue transcends personalities or partisanship.

It is a symptom of a civic pathology, one where ideological grievance takes precedence over shared achievement, and where economic success is no longer a cause for celebration but a litmus test of political allegiance.

If Mr. Musk espouses views one finds disagreeable, there are democratic mechanisms to contest them.

But to vilify an entire enterprise—its workers, consumers, products—based on its founder’s political eccentricities is intellectual laziness masquerading as moral conviction.

It also prompts a deeper question, leading us to the heart of the matter: which corporations, if any, are so morally unblemished that we can consume their products without public disapproval? In an age increasingly saturated with virtue signalling and performative ethics, should we now consider our consumer choices as moral declarations?

If so, the standard quickly becomes untenable.

Mohammed Most Popular Boys’ Name in Three German States

9th May 2025

Read it.

In a stark warning about the effects of migration on Western Europe, it has been revealed that Mohammed was the most popular name given to newborn baby boys in three German states last year.

The name, typically given to Muslim boys, was the most popular choice for parents in the states of Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg. In Hesse, it reached second place, and in North Rhine-Westphalia, it came third.

With regards to the whole of Germany, Mohammed—and its differently spelled variants—moved up from 15th place in 2023 to 11th in 2024.

As we recently reported, Muhammad was the most popular name for baby boys in England and Wales in 2023, and it has consistently ranked among the top 10 since 2016.

Chicks Who Hate Freedom

9th May 2025

Read it.

Young American women supporting Hamas may be the strangest social phenomenon in history. There was some logic, however sad, in the story of John Walker Lindh (the “American Taliban”) whose conversion to Islam may have been a reaction to the disruption to his family life by his father’s homosexuality. Black men who joined the Confederate Army could justify that odd choice because of an offer of personal freedom. But what would persuade a free, privileged young woman to support a political, ideological and religious movement that would extinguish “choice” and the availability of living an alternative gender while advocating horrific violence?

One would think that the extraordinary degree of misogyny inherent in Islam (and the Hamas edition in particular) would be off-putting. Wife-beatings, denial of education, genital mutilation, child brides, honor killings and sartorial oppression are features, not bugs. Genghis Khan was probably more pro-woman than the average shariah-enforcing imam (he banned kidnapping and several other offenses against Mongol women, probably because his mom had been taken against her will by his father).

What mental gymnastics are required to believe that there is a natural alliance between LGBTQ+ and Hamas? Or that there was ever an Islamic Arab nation called Palestine? Or that men with an identity disorder are really women? Or that humanity is doomed because the climate may be two degrees warmer on average in another 50-100 years? Or that history started at the moment capitalism began to oppress everyone?

“In short, ‘there are Chinese spies at Stanford,’” the university’s independent student-run newspaper writes in an investigation published this week.

After learning of multiple incidents of unusual behavior from a handful of Chinese students, or those who claimed to be students, members of The Stanford Review launched an investigation to determine whether the CCP was attempting to gather information on the campus.

As Predicted, America’s Food System Is Failing – Time to Plant New Seeds

9th May 2025

Read it.

Just over 30 years ago, billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith offered a sobering prediction over the deleterious effects of gobalization – which Goldsmith argued would hollow out the industrial base of Western nations and devastate the middle and working class.

“I don’t know if you ever saw it, but one of the best explanations of globalization; Sir James Goldsmith came to the United States in 1994 and did an interview with Charlie Rose. He described why we should never approve the Uruguay round of GATT [General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade], and institute the WTO,” Catherine Austin Fitts told Tucker Carlson in an interview last week.

“To this day, he nailed it perfectly…He said we are going to hollow-out the middle-class in the West, and we are going to devastate the quality of our food supply,” Fitts said.

DC’s Sole Congressional Rep Is Too Old to Drive. Can She Defend the City From a Hostile GOP?

9th May 2025

Mother Jones, a Voice of Ancient Hippies.

Since she was first elected in 1990 as Washington, DC’s nonvoting delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) has fiercely defended the civil service in Congress. Nearly a quarter of her constituents work for the federal government. So after the second inauguration of President Donald Trump, as Elon Musk’s US DOGE Service targeted agency after agency with layoffs, smears, and all manner of corner-cutting, Norton was a logical person to host a March town hall on this unprecedented attack.

The event, promotional materials said, would “give Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton the chance to speak directly with the District of Columbia federal workforce and provide resources.” The promise of a real dialogue with the congresswoman, however, proved to be a bit of hype.

Conducted over the phone, the event had plenty of town, but no hall. As the host, Norton was spectral at best. She read some opening remarks, but when participants directed questions at her, union reps or a democracy activist provided most of the answers. “Congresswoman, I’d be happy to jump in” was a typical intervention during her many unexplained silences.

This illustrates the basic problem that Democrats are facing now. Joe Biden isn’t the only mind-blank politician in the Democrat ranks. The Democrat ‘coalition of the fringes’ is fragmented into handfuls of mutually hostile groups, each of which has a slightly different definition of what constitutes The One True Faith, and as a result, whenever some candidate manages to cobble together a win, they are set forever–not because they represent the views of their various constituents, but because the various proglodyte fragments can’t agree on a replacement. A find illustration of the fact that Leftism is really a religion, in which the trivial differences between The Judean People’s Front and the People’s Front of Judea are all-absorbing.

Self-Described ‘Jew Hater’ Charged With Hate Crimes After Allegedly Attacking Jews At 3 NYC Anti-Israel Protests

8th May 2025

Read it.

A man who self-identified as a “Jew hater” and attacked Jewish pro-Israel protesters at three separate pro-Palestinian rallies has been charged with three counts of committing hate crimes.

Tarek Bazrouk, 20, of New York City, had been arrested at three different protests over a period of nine months where he kicked and punched Jewish pro-Israel demonstrators, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. On Wednesday, he was arrested again and charged with hate crimes in connection with the incidents.

“Despite being arrested after each incident, Bazrouk allegedly remained undeterred and quickly returned to using violence to target Jews in New York City,” said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton for the Southern District of New York in a statement.

India Avenges Daniel Pearl

8th May 2025

Read it.

The murder of Daniel Pearl seems like ancient history now; it happened early in 2002.

Now we learn, however, that as a result of India’s retaliation against Pakistani terrorists who murdered civilian tourists in Kashmir, the killer of Daniel Pearl has been, as they say, neutralized. Here’s the story:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India’s governing party, said that the Indian army killed Pakistani terrorist Abdul Rauf Azhar in “Operation Sindhoor.”

A group of Islamist terrorists, including Azhar, kidnapped and murdered Pearl in 2002. The terrorist was affiliated with al-Qaeda and Jaish-e-Mohammed, an Islamist terror group that aims to separate Kashmir from India and fully incorporate it into Pakistan. …

In the BJP announcement, the party said that Azhar was involved in a number of terror activities, including the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight, the 2016 Pathankot Air Force base attack, and a 2001 terror attack on the Indian parliament.

Azhar’s involvement in the 1999 hijacking freed Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British-born al-Qaeda member who formerly served in Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Azhar wasn’t targeted because he killed Pearl. He was targeted because of his terrorism against India. But as you can see, it’s all connected. And I wonder whether India got some help from Israeli intelligence.

The Indians have centuries of dealing with Muslim expansionism, and know deep in their bones the kind of existential threat Islam poses to any non-Muslim civilization.

Secret Messages Detected on Egyptian Obelisk in Paris

8th May 2025

Read it.

Artnet reports that on his daily walks around Paris, Egyptologist Jean-Guillaume Olette-Pelletier of Paris Sorbonne University and Institut Catholique de Paris began to notice unusual hieroglyphics on the giant obelisk standing in the city’s Place de la Concorde. The monument was erected during the reign of Ramesses II (reigned ca. 1279–1213 B.C.) and originally stood outside Egypt’s Luxor Temple, but was moved to France in the 1830s. Olette-Pelletier believed that the carved stone block could feature crypto-hieroglyphics, secret messages involving puzzles or wordplay that only Egypt’s educated and intellectual elite would have been able to read. He was given the opportunity to examine the 70-foot obelisk up close as it underwent cleaning prior to the 2024 Paris Olympics, and confirmed that the symbols did indeed contain at least seven examples of crypto-hieroglyphics. These essentially sought to remind those who could read them that Ramesses II had been chosen by the gods and claimed his ancestry from Amun-Re and Maat. Their location on the stone would have only made them visible to nobles who arrived at the Luxor Temple by boat during the Opet festival, which was held annually during the Nile’s flood season and reinforced the pharaoh’s right to rule. “Given the angle of approach, the nobility would have seen the hidden message and reflected: ‘the king confirms himself as god incarnate, who cannot be dethroned,’” Olette-Pelletier said. “It was propaganda aimed at the very high intellectual elite.” To read about obelisks from the Egyptian city of Heliopolis that were later moved to European cities, go to “Egypt’s Eternal City.”

Sweden To Criminalize Virginity Tests as Seven Charged for “Honor Killing”

8th May 2025

Read it.

A few decades ago, no one would have believed that a Western European country would have to resort to legislation to ban virginity tests in order to protect the lives of women and girls, yet here we are.

The Swedish government is now preparing to criminalize the practice, which currently only carries the risk of professional disciplinary action if discovered.

According to the proposal, medical professionals who partake in “virginity control” and issue “virginity certificates”—based on the observation of the hymen—or carry out surgical procedures aimed at restoring the hymen will be subjected to criminal charges.

“These proposals aim to make these acts punishable and to allow their perpetrators to be convicted, which is not the case at the moment,” Socialstyrelsen, the Swedish government agency in charge of social services, explained. The new legislation is expected to come into force by December 2025 at the latest.

The World Health Organization (WHO) regards the concept of virginity tests as unscientific and a violation of women’s sexual integrity, and called for it to be banned globally back in 2018. According to UN Women, the practice violates human rights and jeopardizes the sexual and reproductive health of young women.

California Gas Prices Could Rise 75% by End of 2026: USC Analysis

8th May 2025

Read it.

California gas prices could skyrocket by as much as 75 percent by the end of 2026 with the expected shutdown of oil refineries in the state, according to an analysis released May 5 by a researcher at the University of Southern California (USC).

Regular gasoline prices could rise from an average of $4.82 in April 2025 to as high as $8.44 a gallon by the end of next year, said the report, authored by Professor Michael Mische at the Marshall School of Business.

Two Phillips 66 refineries in Los Angeles—about 8 percent of the state’s oil refining capacity—are slated to close by the end of this year. Valero Energy Corp. also announced last month it will shut down or restructure its Benicia refinery in the San Francisco Bay area—which accounts for about 9 percent of refining capacity—by April 2026, increasing concerns over gas prices and supply.

The USC analysis states that based on current demand, consumption, state regulations, and other factors, the refinery closures could result in a potential 21 percent drop in refining capacity from 2023 to April 2026.

Media Spins Report on How Venezuela Facilitated Violent Gang’s Invasion of US

8th May 2025

Read it.

The Venezuelan government was facilitating the illegal immigration of dangerous gang members into the United States, according to multiple intelligence reports, and the legacy media is trying to portray this as bad news for the Trump administration.

On Monday The New York Times ran a story with a headline “Declassified Spy Memo Contradicts Trump on Venezuela Gang Ties.” Other legacy media outlets ran with similar headlines.

The stories are referring to Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan prison gang that the Trump administration has designated a terrorist organization.

If you just read the headlines, you might think that the declassified intelligence report says the Venezuelan government had nothing to do with the exportation of Tren de Aragua gang members to the U.S., as President Donald Trump has said.

However, not every outlet ran with these headlines. The New York Post had a very different angle.

“Corrupt Venezuelan officials ‘facilitated’ Tren de Aragua gang’s reign of terror in U.S.” read its headline on Monday.

So why the enormous discrepancy? What’s the intelligence report actually say?

Congressional Republicans agree that the federal government has a spending problem. Now top GOP leaders want to make it someone else’s problem — by shifting some safety-net programs onto state budgets.

The plans under discussion could generate hundreds of billions of dollars in savings to finance the GOP’s domestic policy megabill. But they’re vexing Republican lawmakers — many of them former governors and state legislators — who are not interested in addressing Washington’s fiscal woes by creating them in state capitals, including those run by their own party.

Union Officials Fought to Keep ‘Rallying Cries for Murdering Jews’ Displayed in Legal Aid Office, Complaint Alleges

Union officials promoted an “anti-Semitic toxic environment” at a New York legal aid organization where employees adorned the office with posters defending Hamas terrorism and calling for “intifada,” according to a federal anti-discrimination complaint filed on Wednesday.

Jewish union members of A Better NYLAG (ABN)—the employee union of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)—said the guild has forced them to work next to cubicles plastered with signs supporting the destruction of Israel and terrorist violence.

Slogans mentioned in the complaint include “ABOLISH THE SETTLER STATE,” “LONG LIVE THE RESISTANCE!,” and “INTIFADA NOW.”

20-Year Study of 1,000 Adults Reveals How Marijuana Alters DNA

8th May 2025

Read it.

Marijuana has intrigued people for decades, especially as more places allow it for medical or recreational use. Many see it as a natural product with relaxing properties, yet scientists have been eager to uncover how it might alter the body in subtle ways.

Researchers tracked the cannabis habits of more than 1,000 U.S. adults over roughly two decades. The team included epidemiologist Lifang Hou from Northwestern University, who analyzed blood samples at two points to search for signs that cannabis use may shift genetic markers.

No Safe Space: Jewish Students Besieged on UK Campuses

7th May 2025

Read it.

A damning new report by StandWithUs UK has revealed a surge in antisemitic harassment and hostility towards Jewish and pro-Israel students across British universities in the wake of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks.

Drawing from over 1,000 testimonies and a nationwide survey, the “Voice of Students 2025” report paints a troubling picture of intimidation, institutional inaction, and a climate of fear permeating campus life.

Key findings include that 64% of surveyed students could not unequivocally call the Hamas attacks terrorism, while 38% believed students who publicly support Israel should “expect” abuse. Students reported being subjected to verbal abuse, threats, and exclusion, with some forced to hide religious symbols or refrain from speaking Hebrew on campus out of fear.

The report accuses universities of failing to uphold their duty of care, citing dismissive responses to complaints and a normalization of anti-Zionist rhetoric as a cover for antisemitism. It calls for urgent reforms, including recognizing anti-Zionism as antisemitism under the IHRA definition and establishing accountability measures.

“This isn’t just about Jewish students,” the report warns, “but about the erosion of safety and free expression for all.”

The Rise of the First SMR in the US: A New Chapter in Pragmatic Energy Innovation

7th May 2025

Read it.

A quiet energy revolution is underway in the heart of West Texas. Abilene, a small town on the edge of the Permian Basin—America’s largest oil-producing region—is now home to the first Small Modular Reactor (SMR) under construction in the United States. In a moment laced with irony and historical significance, the energy stronghold known for oil and gas is pivoting, not away from its roots, but toward a bold expansion into nuclear power. And not just any nuclear, but advanced molten salt technology, designed to redefine safety, scalability, and reliability in power generation.

Jasmine Crockett Caught Cutting Disabled People in Line to Board Flight

7th May 2025

Read it.

Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett is facing backlash after images on social media appeared to show the left-wing firebrand cutting the line in front of passengers in wheelchairs while boarding a flight in Atlanta over the weekend.

Republican House Conference chair Lisa McClain posted the images on her personal campaign account Sunday, arguing Crockett was “abusing her power” by boarding in front of the passengers with disabilities. McClain’s post comes after Crockett called Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbot, who is paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair, “Governor Hot Wheels” while speaking at an LGBT advocacy event in Los Angeles in March.

Crockett, who is viewed by some in the media as a rising star within the Democratic Party, has frequently courted controversy during her time in Congress through attacks on President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans that have at times contained profanity.

“SPOTTED Jasmine Crockett with a taxpayer-funded police escort, cutting everyone in line—even making DISABLED people wait,” McClain wrote on X. “Nothing to see here, just the next leader of the Democrats, abusing her power!”

Mohsen Mahdawi, in Deportation Battle With Trump Admin, Bragged to Neighbors About Building Guns for Terrorists: ‘He Was a Very Angry Young Man’

7th May 2025

Read it.

A Palestinian activist at Columbia University spooked neighbors in his small Vermont town by bragging about his hatred of Jews and his background of building weapons for terrorist groups, according to interviews and 2015 police records obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Mohsen Mahdawi, who had recently moved to Windsor, Vt., from the West Bank, told multiple people in town that he had previously worked in a Palestinian refugee camp building guns for terrorists.

“He said his job in the refugee camp was to make weapons,” a source familiar with Mahdawi said. “He bragged about friends and family wanting to kill Israelis.”

Pro-Hamas Protesters Caused Over $1 Million in Damage to University of Washington Building, School Says

7th May 2025

Read it.

Police arrested 31 protesters for taking over and vandalizing the Boeing-funded Interdisciplinary Engineering Building, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office told KOMO News on Tuesday. The protesters, who also set several nearby dumpsters on fire, demanded that the university sever ties with Boeing for supplying weapons used in Israel’s war against Hamas terrorists.

The protest comes as the Trump administration cracks down on anti-Semitic activity that has swept college campuses following Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on Israel.

The organization behind the Monday protest, Students United for Palestinian Equality & Return, is a “suspended student group,” university spokesman Victor Balta told CNN. The group has published a manifesto overtly praising Hamas’s October 7 attack and also helped organize an anti-Semitic protest on campus in February.

My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised>? I’m sure surprised.

Right-Wing MEPs Fight Leftist ‘Capture’ of EU Border Agency

7th May 2025

Read it.

Frontex is supposed to protect Europe’s borders, but it has been “captured” by the Left, so does nothing of the sort.

That is the verdict of Sweden Democrats MEP Charlie Weimers, who stands at the forefront of efforts to reverse what he describes as the “coup at Frontex”—no small task, by his own admission, given the role of senior European Union officials in this takeover.

Weimers stressed that “this is not a procedural matter. It is an institutional crisis.”

Israeli Musician Cancels UK Gigs Over “Credible Threats” From Gaza Activists

7th May 2025

Read it.

Hatred surrounding the conflict in the Middle East continues to spill over into the West, most recently forcing Jonny Greenwood from the British band Radiohead to cancel two UK shows with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa because of threats received by the venues.

The musical duo said in a statement on social media that “enough credible threats” had been sent to the venues and their staff “to conclude that it’s not safe to proceed.” They criticised activists for “censorship” and “silencing” and—as with attempts to ban Israel from participating in the Eurovision Song Contest—stressed the futility of the action.

Iranian Terror Suspects May Have Targeted Jewish Civilians in UK

7th May 2025

Read it.

Oh, ya think?

British counter-terror police arrested five men, including four Iranian nationals, on Saturday, fearing that an attack on a “specific premises” was imminent. Speculation has since mounted—including within the establishment press—that the target may have been a synagogue or another specifically Jewish establishment.

Three other Iranian nationals were later arrested as part of a separate operation, with counter-terror police reportedly fearing that these men would attempt to either leave the UK or destroy evidence following the earlier arrests.

One of the suspected terrorists accused of plotting an attack is also claimed to be “very well-connected” to the Hamas-backing regime in Tehran.

Responding to reports, Britain’s Campaign Against Antisemitism charity criticised the Labour government for doing “nothing to proscribe Iran’s [Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps] IRGC, which sponsors terrorism around the world and is known to be active in the UK.”

Why Trump?

7th May 2025

Read it.

The question comes to me from more and more Europeans these days: “Do you still support Donald Trump after all of this?”

By “all of this,” they usually mean the bizarre and destructive tariffs regime the White House rolled out in April, on what Trump called “Liberation Day.” But there is more, of course: Trump’s harsh deportation regime against illegal migrants, his substantive assault on universities, his wrecking of the NATO alliance, his weird trolling of Canada (“America’s 51st State”) and Denmark, over Greenland, et cetera.

My answer is: Yes, I agree that most of this has been troubling, some more than others. So why do I, as an American conservative, still back Trump? The answer is simple: what was, and what is, the alternative? Not the ideal alternative, but the real-world alternative.

Consider where America was before Trump’s re-election.

The Druse Connection

7th May 2025

Quillette.

Last week, Syrian Sunni jihadists attacked Druse communities in Jaramana and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya, suburbs of the Syrian capital of Damascus. The Israel Air Force (IAF) intervened by striking Syrian jihadi personnel and positions, including a site adjacent to the Syrian presidential palace. Meanwhile, the Houthi rebels who control northern Yemen delivered a resounding blow against Israel on Sunday, when one of their ballistic missiles penetrated Israeli defences and landed next to Israel’s main international airport, briefly halting almost all international flights to and from the Jewish state, except those operated by Israeli airlines. Israel retaliated with a twenty-plane strike against Houthi economic installations. Further strikes are likely—and, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted, these may also target Iran, the Houthis’ political and military patron. Meanwhile, Israel’s cabinet has authorised the immediate call-up of tens of thousands of IDF reservists in preparation for an “expansion” of the country’s war-making against Hamas, which has been more or less stalemated for months.
