The Trouble With Rufo-ism

2nd February 2024

ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.

A recurring feature of conservatism since at least the middle of the last century has been the guy who seems to open his eyes to the problem of progressivism only to come up with a response that promises to make things worse. Conservative opposition to progressivism is usually just surrender, but sometimes one of them finds some courage, but lands on a solution that is guarantee to fail.

That is what we see with Christopher Rufo. He is the C-list conservative pundit who has risen to fame taking on the diversity rackets. What started out as an organic revolt among suburban parents over the lunacy being taught to their kids has become a vehicle for Rufo. He has written a book and become an anti-diversity-rackets crusader on social media. His latest scalp the Harvard president.

While it is always fun to “own the libs” his proposed alternative to the explicitly antiwhite diversity pogroms is actually worse than the pogroms. The reason for that is his opposition starts with an affirmation of the moral framework that not only makes these diversity rackets possible, but inevitable. He spells it out in this essay posted a few weeks ago, in which is pulls the colorblind society from the conservative museum.

Vermont Resettled Somalis, Shootings Are Up 185%

2nd February 2024

Read it.

“We are not used to this level of violence in Vermont,” Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger complained after the city racked up 5 murders. That may not sound like much, but it gives the normally sleepy city, where Bernie Sanders got his start, a higher murder rate than Philly.

When James Eaton, a mentally unstable leftist who had praised Hamas, shot and wounded three Arab Muslim men outside his home, the media eagerly diverted attention from the crime wave to the shooter, who was conveniently white, while falsely blaming it on ‘Islamophobia’.

The discredited hoax was not only trying to rally support for terrorists, but also to distract attention from the real perpetrators of the violence that has overtaken Bernie’s old city.

Migrants Who Beat NYPD Cops Released With No Bail, Given Free Tickets To California Under Fake Names

2nd February 2024

Not the Babylon Bee.

Four out of five illegal migrants who were caught on camera attacking two NYPD cops in Times Square were arrested, set free on no bail, and then given free bus tickets to California.

Following their release, a smirking Johan Boada, 22, could be seen giving a double middle finger to media covering the situation.

When asked if he should be deported, Gov. Kathy Hochul said: “I think that’s actually something that should be looked at,” adding “I mean, if someone commits a crime against a police officer in the state of New York and they’re not here legally, it’s definitely worth checking into.”

I suspect they’ll feel right at home in California.

Escape to New York—America’s Wide-Open Northern Border

2nd February 2024

The Foundry.

A damaged pickup truck with no lights sped past me in the opposite direction in the middle of Malone, New York, up on America’s northern border with Canada. It was 5 p.m. on a dark winter evening, and the truck was going about 60, throwing off sparks and burning plastic. At least eight police cars were in pursuit. Seconds later, the 27-year-old driver crossed over the road and hit a stone monument. Amazingly, though he hit many cars on his mad ride, the guy didn’t kill anyone.

Even more amazing: This criminally reckless driver had done the same thing just two days before. On Jan. 19, he stole a Chevy truck and caused “multiple wrecked vehicles” while police chased him at high speed. According to local press, “He was arrested, arraigned, and released” thanks to New York’s lax bail law. Two days later, he came close to killing even more people. Including me.

This story illustrates how elites and anti-law-enforcement voters in far-off big cities determine the fates of rural and small-town Americans. It also shows how enforcing the law—arrests and detentions in particular—is effective in deterring law-breaking, including illegal immigration.

It Took 22 Minutes for Revolt After High School Put Tampon Dispenser in Boys Restroom

2nd February 2024

Read it.

Principal Marc Balanda sent an email out to students and their families on Jan. 24 and explained that the new dispenser had been torn down and basically destroyed in less than 25 minutes, according to CT Insider. Balanda called the incident “disgusting” and an “egregious instance of vandalism and destruction of property” in the email with a subject line that read “I am feeling ‘dis-’ right now.”

The dispenser was put in place in compliance with a law that passed in 2022 and was set to go into effect on Sept. 1 of this year that requires all schools from grades three to 12 to put menstrual dispensers in female restrooms and at least one male restroom, according to the text. Some who supported the bill argued that “menstruating individuals” shouldn’t have to choose between their period and going to school, according to the CT Mirror.

“Ask for more information. Use your words to start a dialogue rather than using your hands to destroy something. In this particular instance, if you have questions, please let me know,” Balanda wrote in the email.

Tell that to Antifa and BLM and see how far it gets you.

“Dialogue” these days means getting preached at by proglodyte officials, but doesn’t bring any relief. The boys didn’t have any questions; they knew why a tampon dispenser had been placed in their bathroom, and they were serving notice that it wouldn’t be tolerated.

Oregon Republicans Slam State’s High Court Reelection Ban Ruling

2nd February 2024

Read it.

Oregon state Senate Republicans blasted the state’s Supreme Court ruling Thursday that disqualified them from reelection, saying that partisan politics replaced the rule of law.

The “Democrat-stacked” Supreme Court sided with state Democrats that disallowed one-third of the Senate from running for reelection sooner than they expected over 13 words of the state’s 2022 law Measure 113.

Five of the 10 pols affected sued Oregon’s secretary of state, arguing that they should be able to serve one more term before being disqualified. The high court’s ruling enforced Democrats’ stance that they would be immediately barred from seeking reelection. Every participating justice was appointed by former Democrat Gov. Kate Brown; Justice Aruna Masih, appointed by current Democrat Gov. Tina Kotek, sat out the decision, the Oregon Capital Chronicle reported.

Walgreens announced the closure of approximately 200 stores nationwide last year due to what the company called “rampant theft.”

In a speech on the House floor Tuesday, Pressley said the “closures are not arbitrary and they are not innocent.”

“They are life-threatening acts of racial and economic discrimination,” she said, according to the Mail. “That is why I joined with [Massachusetts] Senators [Ed] Markey and [Elizabeth] Warren to demand answers from Walgreens’ CEO.”

Apparently it’s racist to impede black people from stealing from drug stores. Who knew?

Hostin: ‘You Can’t Say’ the ‘Vast Majority’ of America Is Not Racist

2nd February 2024

Newsbusters.

ABC’s The View kicked off Black History Month by asserting, without evidence, that most Americans were racist. Co-host Sunny Hostin snapped at “conservative” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin after she rightfully said that the “vast majority” of Americans were not racist. Hostin also tried to shut down debate by asserting that no one was allowed to question her “lived experience” on the topic. But here at NewsBusters, we will absolutely question her because she has lied in the past about what she’s experienced.

Farah Griffin’s supposedly controversial comments included her admitting that America indeed had “a history of racism” but “I don’t think the American people are racist.”

“And there are plenty of racist people in this country,” co-host Joy Behar pushed back. “And there are absolutely racist people in this country. It is not the vast majority of people in this country,” Farah Griffin responded.

Stating that fact absolutely triggered Hostin. “Well, the FBI director said white supremacy is the biggest threat to our country today,” she snapped at Farah Griffin as if Director Wray was a trustworthy source.

Certainly Sunny Hostin appears to be racist.

A 21st-Century Peasants’ Revolt

1st February 2024

As I write, dozens of tractors, one with an enormous manure spreader hitched to it, are blockading off a street near our Brussels office. They moved in during the night and are now hemmed in by police; most of the farmers look like they slept in their cabs. By 10 a.m., a half-dozen or so men and one young woman had set up an open-air barbeque in the park and opened some beers while reporters took photographs. The farmers are French; more are expected to arrive soon. A blockade is going on in Paris, too. On Friday, I attended a farmers’ protest in front of the EU with several of my colleagues—that one had fewer tractors but featured a large cow painted in EU blue hanging by its neck from a loader, while French politician Marion Maréchal, the blond darling of the French Right, gave supportive interviews.

The Washington Free Beacon’s Andrew Kerr has reported a detailed story on the dispute between Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and whistleblower Amanda Timpson. Timpson alleges she was terminated by Willis for complaining about the misuse of federal funds by former Willis campaign aide Michael Cuffee. Timpson appears to have recorded a key meeting with Willis that she provided to Kerr. The recording is posted along with Kerr’s story. It sounds like Ms. Fani put the load right on Timpson.

We’re are at risk of getting to know more about Willis than any reasonable person would want to know, with more to come in the February 15 hearing scheduled on the motion to disqualify her from representing the state in her “conspiracy so immense” RICO case against President Trump and others. Both Willis and her special prosecutor/special friend Nathan Wade have been subpoenaed to testify at the hearing.

“This Is Not the Europe We Want”: Farmers Bring the Fight to EU’s Front Door

1st February 2024

Read it.

Protesting farmers were met by riot police with fire hoses just metres from the European Parliament on Thursday, as they tried to grab the attention of the European Council by expressing their collective outrage at EU green policies threatening their livelihood.

In an unusually rowdy protest, even by Brussels standards, tyre fires and tractor blockades greeted European leaders as a transnational coalition of farming groups took to the streets. They are angered by EU green policies—including decrees forcing active farmland to go fallow, restricting the use of fertiliser, and limiting permitted amount of livestock—as well as national edicts such as reduced subsidies on diesel fuel—that are direct results of the EU’s Net Zero commitments.

In remarks to The European Conservative, French MEP Thierry Mariani (Rassemblement National-ID) blamed the uproar on the wishes of EU elites to pursue free trade deals while suffocating native European industry with “Soviet-style administration of agriculture,” as well as relentlessly pursuing Ukrainian integration into EU’s common agricultural policy (CAP).

The peasants are still revolting.

List of Chinese Military-Linked Firms in U.S. Surges in Latest Pentagon Accounting

1st February 2024

Washington Times.

Under pressure from Congress, the Pentagon on Wednesday released an updated and expanded list of nearly 50 Chinese military companies currently operating in the United States. The list includes several key weapons makers such as the Aviation Industry Corp. of China Ltd. and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp. Ltd.

Two state-run nuclear companies on the list — the China National Nuclear Corp. and China General Nuclear Power Group — are key players in China‘s rapid nuclear weapons buildup and have been sanctioned by the Treasury Department in the past for suspected diversion of civilian nuclear technology to the Chinese military.

The 46 companies, including 17 subsidiaries is a marked increase since the first list was published in 2021. That list included 34 companies and 13 subsidiary companies. Thirteen companies were added to the list in 2022.

Voter Suppression, Harvard-Style

1st February 2024

Read it.

There are elections in Hong Kong, but to get on the ballot you have to be nominated by a committee controlled by Beijing government.

Elections for the Harvard Board of Overseers—one of Harvard’s two governing bodies—are almost as well-controlled. A Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) nominating committee curates a slate of candidates, from which alumni make their selections.

But an alternative route to get on the Harvard ballot exists, at least in theory. So-called “petition” candidates have always been rare—but after several climate activists were elected in 2020, the rules were changed to make it even harder. Among other things, the number of petitions to get on the ballot was raised by a factor of fifteen, to more than three thousand.

The Arc Of Managerialism

1st February 2024

Zman does a deep dive.

Beverly Hills, California. The company offered safe deposit boxes to clients seeking privacy and security. Banks have rules about what can be kept in their safe deposit boxes and often require disclosure of the contents. This company did not place such restrictions on their clients. As a result, it was assumed its clients were criminals or people who would like to circumvent government surveillance.

For this reason and no other reason, the FBI got a warrant to inspect the company’s records, presumably to confirm that criminals were using the service. The legality of this was not questioned by the judge who signed off on the warrant because judges no longer question warrant requests from agents of the state. The FBI could hand a judge a drawing of stick figures in fingerpaint, claiming it is surveillance video of criminal activity and the judge would accept it.

Putting that aside, the warrant made no mention of opening the safe deposit boxes or inspecting the contents for criminal activity. On the day of the raid, the special agent in charge of the raid ordered his agents to pry open the boxes, inventory the contents, bring in drug sniffing dogs to sniff the contents and collect fingerprints from the boxes and the inside of the facility. Then the FBI decided to seize tens of millions in property on the grounds that they could do it.

Carjacking Spirals Out of Control in the Capital

1st February 2024

The Spectator.

A former Trump official is reportedly in critical condition after being shot during an attempted carjacking in Washington on Monday evening. Mike Gill was waiting to pick up his wife when a man shot him and then fled on foot. The carjacker allegedly went on a rampage, killing Alberto Vasquez Jr. after taking his car keys, stealing two more cars and then firing a gun at a police officer before he was finally shot and killed.

Carjackings have become a serious problem around the country, but especially in the nation’s capital. Last year, carjackings doubled, reaching a shocking 959 reported incidents. Public officials have said that most of the carjackings in DC are committed by repeat teenage offenders. On Tuesday night, multiple DC officials appeared on a panel moderated by Councilman Charles Allen to discuss why this is happening. As I’ve previously written in this newsletter, Allen is one of the chief individuals responsible for DC’s soft-on-crime approach to policing: he wrote the bill that allows the worst offenders (rapists, murderers, etc.) to get out of prison in fifteen years so long as they were under the age of twenty-five when they committed their crime, and wrote the updated DC criminal code that was considered so heinous Congress stepped in to override the bill. As one commenter on a Facebook livestream of the event wrote, “Having Carjack Chuck moderate this forum is like have [sic] OJ Simpson moderate a forum on domestic violence.”

Scott Rasmussen has done America an enormous service. He and his team have identified the driving forces behind the destructive radicalism which is pushing us into a cultural civil war.

While doing their two weekly national surveys, Rasmussen and his team noticed an anomaly. Out of every 1,000 or so respondents, there would always be three or four who were far more radical than everyone else. After several months of finding these unusual responses, Rasmussen realized they all shared three characteristics.

The radical responses came from people who had graduate degrees (not just graduate studies), family incomes above $150,000 a year, and lived in large cities (more than 10,000 people per zip code).

Judge Rules California Background Check, Anti-Importation Rules for Ammo Unconstitutional

A California law requiring people to submit to a background check every time they want to purchase ammunition is unconstitutional, a federal judge ruled in a decision made public Wednesday.

U.S. District Judge Roger T. Benitez found state laws prohibiting California buyers from purchasing and importing ammunition from out-of-state sellers likewise violate federal law.

Benitez barred the state from enforcing the laws moving forward and denied a request from California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta’s office to put his decision on hold while the state appeals to a higher court.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines may cause heart inflammation and severe allergic shock, according to a new study from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Researchers with the FDA, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and companies like CVS looked at health care databases to try to figure out if there were signs the Moderna and Pfizer bivalent COVID-19 vaccines might be linked to any health issues.

They found several safety signals. One signal was for myocarditis, a form of heart inflammation, and a related condition called pericarditis following Pfizer vaccination in adults aged 18 to 35. Another was for anaphylaxis, or severe allergic shock, following Moderna and Pfizer vaccination in people aged 18 to 64.

Legal Issues Cloud Missouri School District’s Race-Based Hiring

1st February 2024

The Foundry.

A Missouri school district intends to double its percentage of minority teachers even as the state’s attorney general has warned that private companies that racially discriminate in hiring face legal action.

Webster Groves School District’s teaching and administrative staff should match the racial demographics of its student body, according to the Missouri school system’s strategic plan. The public school district implemented its plan this winter and aims to accomplish listed goals within three years.

One objective of Webster Groves, a school system in the suburbs of St. Louis, is to “attract, support, and retain exceptionally talented staff who at minimum reflect the diversity of our student population.”

In the 2023-2024 school year, 11% of teachers and administrators for Webster Groves are nonwhite, an increase of 4 percentage points from 7% nonwhite in the 2017-2018 school year.

The school district would have to increase the percentage of nonwhite teachers to 22.2% to match the student body, according to documents posted online for the Dec. 13 meeting of the Webster Groves school board.
