Byzantine Plot in the Tri-State Region

Steve Sailer.

I can see why Egypt or Turkey would like to own a U.S. Senator — the U.S. is the world’s most powerful country, so it makes sense to bribe a senator — but I don’t get what paying off the mayor of New York, and a rather buffoonish mayor at that, would get you.

The Food Insecurity Lie

2nd November 2023

Read it.

President Joe Biden says 24 million Americans “suffer from food insecurity!”

News anchors were shocked that there is “food insecurity in the richest country in the world!” ABC hosts turned “insecurity” into “hunger.”

But in my new video, Rachel Sheffield, who researches welfare policy at The Heritage Foundation, explains, “Food insecurity is not the same thing as hunger. It just means that they had to rely on cheaper foods, store-brand alternatives … or reduce[d] variety.”

Really? The alarm about “food insecurity” is based on that? Well, yes. Even the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in its fine print, admits that “for most food-insecure households, the inadequacies were in the form of reduced quality and variety of food rather than insufficient quantity.”

“They always want to create a crisis,” I say to Sheffield.

“Government programs want to keep themselves going,” she replies.

Sterilizing the Young

2nd November 2023

The American Mind.

The aggressive promotion of gender ideology has coincided with a sharp rise in children identifying as transgender. As with the eugenics movement of a century ago, doctors are subjecting these young and vulnerable children to harmful drugs and irreversible surgeries that can leave them permanently sterilized.

Since most of their parents are progressives, I’d say this was a self-correcting problem.

Came for Dinner and Never Left

2nd November 2023

ZMan breaks out the popcorn.

Some movies are on the top-100 list because they are great stories told very well, while others are on the list for their great technological breakthroughs. Some are on the list for their cultural impact. That is the case with Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, a comedy about race mixing from 1967. The film had two legends, Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, and a big star at the moment in Sydney Poitier.

The film was viewed at the time as groundbreaking because it featured a mixed-race couple in a positive light. Right around the time the movie was released, the Supreme Court had struck down anti-miscegenation laws in Loving v. Virginia. Of course, the civil rights movement was at its peak, so this was just what white liberals wanted to see, which was white liberals being celebrated for their goodness.

The movie itself is pretty simple. It opens with the couple in question, generic rich white girl and her much older black boyfriend, Sydney Poitier, getting off an airplane and strolling through an airport like lovers on a walk in the park. Keep in mind that this is 1967, but no one in the airport notices, because you see, this is the glorious future where race no longer matters, so get used to it you terrible bigots.

AOC Goes Defcon 10 on AIPAC

2nd November 2023

Read it.

The Democratic Party is undergoing a civil war over Gaza and Israel. Traditional Democrats like Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are pro-Israel. Possibly this has something to do with the fact that American Jews contribute a large portion–last time I saw the numbers, more than half–of all campaign funds for Democratic candidates. To be fair, however, it may also reflect basic human decency.

But the newer generation of Democrats, represented by the Squad, is not impressed. They hate Israel and don’t much like Jews. And the Squad speaks for lots of Democrats: Joe Biden’s approval ratings have fallen among Democrats, apparently because many object to the pro-Israel stance he has taken in connection with the Gazan massacres.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, never a team player, weighed in yesterday with an over-the-top attack on AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. AIPAC is a grass roots and lobbying organization that supports Israel. It is bipartisan and has endorsed many Democrats, but is seen as relatively conservative in orientation, by Washington standards.

Keeping a Tax Clash from Going Out of Bounds

2nd November 2023

Richard Epstein.

For the past few years, many progressives have made it a high priority to impose on the superrich an annual wealth tax that takes hold even on those whose wealth declines in a given year—or, failing that, to impose a tax on unrealized income (i.e., simple accretions of wealth by people who have not sold or otherwise disposed of their property). These proposals looked to be off the table until the decision of the Supreme Court to hear Moore v. United States (2023) put the matter into high relief.

Moore started out as a technical tax dispute when the government sought to collect $14,729 in taxes from Charles and Kathleen Moore under the mandatory repatriation tax (MRT) part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 on income trapped in a corporation by the MRT’s regulations. But the case quickly attracted greater attention because the Moores claimed that the MRT tax was unconstitutional because gain had not been realized—that is, distributed from the corporation to the Moores.

Public School Refuseniks

2nd November 2023

Read it.

According to one estimate I have seen, in 1973 there were only about 13,000 children being homeschooled. Today the number is over 5 million—and may be much higher, as many states do not track the numbers very carefully.

The Washington Post has noticed, and you can tell they are worried about it. (The left has always hated homeschooling, and the teachers unions rightly understand what a threat homeschooling is to their gravy train, as most public schools derive their revenue by how many students are enrolled.)

The Dog That Still Isn’t Barking

2nd November 2023

Read it.

Several days ago, in a post I called “Distinctions Without a Difference,” I expressed several questions that were floating around the back of my mind regarding whether there are really meaningful distinctions of intent between “Palestinians” and “Hamas.” I raised those questions because everywhere we turn, both explicitly and implied, we’re being asked to believe that Hamas is one thing but Palestinians are another. I said in that post that I can imagine that such distinctions are meaningful, but that I always seemed to lack actual evidence.

One of the arguments I often hear for the lack of evidence for the existence of non-genocidal Palestinians is the fact that peaceful Palestinians are oppressed by Hamas and, if they were to openly push-back on acts of terror, then they would themselves be targeted. It isn’t hard to imagine that possibility, but there’s something about it that feels a wee bit too convenient for my comfort. We’re just supposed to take their word for it. Such an explanation is crafted in a way that forecloses the possibility of ever having any empirical evidence. We are expected to take it completely on faith.

The narrative for the existence of peaceful Palestinians goes something like this: “By golly, those meany people in Hamas are terrible, but Palestinians aren’t like Hamas. All those secret peace-loving Palestinians would really tell it like it is if they weren’t afraid of those meanies in Hamas. Otherwise, boy, they’d really let loose with their anti-genocidal views.”

Eleven Essential Knots Everyone Should Know How to Tie

1st November 2023

Lifehacker.

When confronted with the need to tie something off, most people resort to simply tying as many half-assed knots as they can in the vague hope that the sheer frictional complexity will stymie the natural forces of entropy.

This approach can work, as long as you’re okay with sacrificing your dignity and the effectiveness of said knots—but it’s much better to learn how to tie some of the most useful of the roughly 4,000 knots known to humankind.

Here are 11 knots every adult should know how to tie.

Marriage is apparently not one of the essentials.

Banana Equivalent Dose

1st November 2023

Read it.

Banana equivalent dose (BED) is an informal unit of measurement of ionizing radiation exposure, intended as a general educational example to compare a dose of radioactivity to the dose one is exposed to by eating one average-sized banana. Bananas contain naturally occurring radioactive isotopes, particularly potassium-40 (40K), one of several naturally occurring isotopes of potassium. One BED is often correlated to 10?7 sievert (0.1 ?Sv); however, in practice, this dose is not cumulative, as the potassium in foods is excreted in urine to maintain homeostasis.[1] The BED is only meant as an educational exercise and is not a formally adopted dose measurement.
