In September, a new statue of Felix Dzerzhinsky was erected in the Moscow suburbs outside of the headquarters of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, the Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki (SVR). Dzerzhinsky was the Polish creator of one of the world’s great repressive political machines. In 1917, he had been instructed to create the SVR’s forerunner, known then as the Cheka, by Lenin himself, who much admired the toughness of the man who became known as Iron Felix. The organisation would be called many names—the GPU, OGPU, NKVD, MGB, KGB—and it is now split into the SVR and the domestic Federal Security Service or Federalnaya Sluzhba Bezopasnosti (FSB).
Iron Felix was Heinrich Himmler plus competence.

Initially introduced in the 1980s to reduce labor costs, self-service machines transferred the work from employees to customers. They gained popularity in supermarkets in the early 2000s, especially during the pandemic, as they allowed shoppers to avoid close contact with others, according to the Yahoo report.
However, retailers are now reassessing self-checkout due to its association with increased merchandise losses, both from accidental errors and deliberate theft, a phenomenon known as “shrink.”
I don’t go into a store to do the work that store employees ought to be doing. I’m surprised they haven’t started forcing shoppers to restock the shelves for them.

Our historically twisted view that wars don’t happen here at home, interrupted by Pearl Harbor and Sept. 11, 2001, may require our immediate and stone-cold sober attention.
Our borders have been wide open since Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas took up his post in 2021 with over seven million illegal immigrants invading us since his confirmation.
As incredulous as it is, he still hasn’t been impeached.

A hyperstition is a belief which becomes true if people believe it’s true. For example, “Dogecoin is a great short-term investment and you need to buy it right now!” is true if everyone believes it is true; lots of people will buy Dogecoin and it will go way up. “The bank is collapsing and you need to get your money out right away” is likewise true; if everyone believes it, there will be a run on the bank.
What else is a hyperstition? “Bernie can’t possibly win” – if everyone believes this, donors won’t bother giving money to Bernie (why bother? it’s futile!), volunteers won’t canvas for him, and party honchos won’t put their careers on the line to support him. But also, “Bernie’s on fire and can’t be stopped!” – donors looking to curry favor with a future winner will support him, his base will be fired up, opponents might even drop out of the race.
Slurs are like this too. Fifty years ago, “Negro” was the respectable, scholarly term for black people, used by everyone from white academics to Malcolm X to Martin Luther King. In 1966, Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael said that white people had invented the term “Negro” as a descriptor, so people of African descent needed a new term they could be proud of, and he was choosing “black” because it sounded scary. All the pro-civil-rights white people loved this and used the new word to signal their support for civil rights, soon using “Negro” actively became a sign that you didn’t support civil rights, and now it’s a slur and society demands that politicians resign if they use it. Carmichael said – in a completely made up way that nobody had been thinking of before him – that “Negro” was a slur – and because people believed him it became true.

Howdy — this is not a religious commentary, as I leave that (mostly) to the members of their respective organizations.
The Pope exists in the real world and is an influential force in human affairs, and so this atheist feels more than qualified to comment on that basis. This is the same basis on which I approve of Protestant reforms (raised Protestant) despite having no religious charter for my views. Also, I find some Protestantism more agreeable than others. So much for my preferences — that’s not the point. Wars have been fought over this stuff, nations dissolved and founded, and from my admittedly atheist perspective, most religious wars are just ordinary wars for power and security (or personal glory) using a different label than the other options of race, ethnicity, nation-state, geography, or “vocation” (meaning a given people’s way of getting on).
I remember when liberty had a great ally in a sturdy and forthright man of a Pope. Reagan, Thatcher, John Paul II — those were heroic leaders united in a global crusade against the pure evil of Communism, winning WWIII without plunging the planet into fire.

Since becoming a mother, I have come to dread weddings. Children are often no longer welcome at nuptials. My children have been banned from several already, and we have attended several others where they might as well have been, so inhospitable were they to young families. I find it indescribably depressing and utterly baffling that small children would be unwelcome at such a momentous family celebration. The concept seems to contradict the very purpose of a wedding — to bring two families together for the creation of another. Perhaps as a result of the decline of religion, weddings are no longer for families — they are essentially very, very expensive dance parties for the couple’s young social group. The main event is a dance that can go on until the next morning — inhospitable not only to small children but also to great grannies with wheelchairs and 9 pm bedtimes. Fair enough if the bride and groom want to party late into the night — but why prevent the whole family from enjoying everything before that? When I was little, I adored weddings — indeed I am sure I anticipated them as much as the rest of the family. The thrill of seeing the bride walk down the aisle, and of watching my parents and aunts and uncles dance — these are very strong and happy memories. Excluding children from weddings is essentially saying that they are a nuisance and that the party would be better without them.

A trade deal with the US has long been a holy grail for Brexiteers, not least because it is something that the European Union has failed to achieve. Barack Obama said Britain would have to go to the “back of the queue,” then Donald Trump said Britain was at the front of the queue. Unfortunately, though, Trump wasn’t minded to serve anyone before being replaced by Joe Biden, who has shown a similar lack of interest in trade deals. Indeed, Biden has returned the US to an age of protectionism through his bizarrely named Inflation Reduction Act, which offers grants and subsidies to green industries — so long as they are based in the US.
But Britain has now worked out an alternative strategy for the US: carry on dealing with the federal government, but work on agreements with individual states while you are waiting. The latest installment is a “memorandum of understanding” with Florida, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis and the UK’s trade secretary Kemi Badenoch today. It joins similar agreements with North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Washington and Utah. But the deal with Florida is the most significant, given that it has the fourth highest GDP of any US state, with an economy around the size of Spain’s. Moreover, Florida is the base of much of the US’s space industry, which is a sector in which Britain is especially strong.
These agreements are undoubtedly a good thing, but they shouldn’t be mistaken for trade deals. They do not remove any tariffs or set up any legal process for trade disputes, other than what already exists under World Trade Organization rules. Rather they consist of an agreement to discuss and possibly lower non-tariff barriers to trade, to share academic research, set up worker exchange programs and hold trade fairs and the like.

The rise of the no-homework movement during the Covid-19 pandemic tapped into long-running disagreements over homework’s impact on students. The purpose and effectiveness of homework have been disputed for well over a century. In 1901, for instance, California banned homework for students up to age 15, and limited it for older students, over concerns that it endangered children’s mental and physical health. The newest iteration of the anti-homework argument contends that the current practice punishes students who lack support and rewards those with more resources, reinforcing the “myth of meritocracy.”
But there is still no research consensus on homework’s effectiveness; no one can seem to agree on what the right metrics are. Much of the debate relies on anecdotes, intuition, or speculation.
Bearing in mind that Vox is a hard-left Narrative media site, nevertheless even a blind pig finds an acorn now and then.

In Washington-speak the “Inflation Reduction Act” requires HHS to “negotiate” drug prices for Medicare Part D and Part B to establish a maximum “fair” price. In reality there is no negotiation–firms who refuse to negotiate are hit with huge taxes. The “negotiation” if you want to call it that is “your money or your life” and fairness has little to do with it. The IRA also requires very costly inflation rebates, i.e. a price control/tax. In essence, the IRA is a taking; for drugs with a large Medicare market it is similar to abrogating patents to 9 years for small molecule drugs and 13 years for biologics. For the included drugs there will be a significant reduction in revenues. Moreover, we don’t yet know whether the plan will be extended to more and more drugs. There is significant uncertainty affecting the entire market. What will be situation in 10 years? Will the US be like Europe?

A November 3 post on X (formerly Twitter) from J.K. Rowling caught my eye recently. It was her comment on the decision of an Australian court to mandate that the ‘preferred pronouns’ of people identifying as transgender be used as a “matter of respect” to ensure “public confidence in the proper administration of justice.” As Rowling noted: “Asking a woman to refer to her male rapist or violent assaulter as ‘she’ in court is a form of state-sanctioned abuse. Female victims of male violence are further traumatised by being forced to speak a lie.” Indeed, forcing a woman to refer to the man who abused and raped her as ‘she’ seems a particularly grotesque form of gaslighting.
Rowling’s comment gets to the heart of something that is not commented on often enough: the manifest cruelty of the transgender movement. I’m not referring here to the mobs of trans-identified men that so often threaten violence towards women who dare to speak out—or, as in the case of Posie Parker’s visit to New Zealand earlier this year, actually perpetrate it. Nor am I speaking of the torrent of vile threats of rape that women like Rowling face from these vicious men in dresses. I mean the cruelty of the practices and policies imposed by those in power on women and girls in the name of the transgender movement, which have swept virtually every Western country in under a decade.

The American Mind.
Radical ideology takes many forms: Marxist, Islamist, a combination of the two (termed the red-green alliance), anarchist, what was once called Third Worldist and is now rebranded “postcolonial theory,” intersectional and anti-TERF feminism, and so on. What too many variants share is a visceral attraction to fantasies of transformative, retributive violence.
In roughly psychoanalytic terms, they gravitate toward alibis for sadism, humiliation, and even outright murder of the hated, fantasized object or “other” standing in the way of their “progress.” They seek a “permission structure” to vent their spleen. According to René Girard, these befuddled victimizers of innocents—ironically enough, most convinced of their own moral purity in the very commission of their crime—hunger for sacrificial scapegoats, designated essentially arbitrarily as responsible for the ills of the world, and bond together as a solidaristic community of the (self-)righteous in the act of executing them together. And if they can’t actually be there for the event itself, they applaud as spectators from a distance.
Add to that the predominance of “woke” progressive ideology on the American college campus today—a wooly-minded mélange of every sort of anti-civilizational, anti-systemic “thought”—and what you get is the uninhibited cries of bloodlust, worthy of a proud troop of resentful Raskolnikovs on the loose, their shrieks echoing through the halls of academe. But will these pyromaniacs in expensive sneakers and fancy eyewear ever undergo Dostoevsky’s antihero’s redemptive acknowledgment of a guilty conscience? At present it seems doubtful.

Remember the Education Reform juggernaut right before the Great Awokening? Various billionaires announced that to end racial inequality, All We Had to Do Is to Fix the Schools and that they’d just been to a conference in Aspen where they had a brainstorm about exactly how to do it, usually involving teaching public school students to think more like billionaires. Or something.
But that didn’t much work, although some Back to Basics efforts like KIPP seemed to do some good for some poor kids of good character. But then came the Great Awokening and it became racist to attribute racial gaps to anything other than Systemic Racism and to suggest any remedies other than jobs and cash handouts for blacks.

Civilized nations have spent generations trying to convince themselves that the primary religious and national impulses of the Muslim world come down to more than conquest and mass murder.
The horrors of the past few years in Afghanistan and Israel both came down to the mistaken belief that you could negotiate and reach an agreement with Jihadist movements.
Both D.C. and Jerusalem had become enchanted with diplomatic initiatives to the Muslim world, from the Abraham Accords to two years of relative peace with Hamas, politicians, generals and diplomats were convinced that they had finally unlocked the secret of coexistence.
But there’s no perpetual motion machine, no diet that lets you eat what you want and no coexistence with an ideology that is built on conquering and destroying all outsiders.
Individually, contextually and circumstantially coexistence is possible. But not in the long run.
Islam is an oppressive totalitarian ideology under the guise of a religion with which no co-existence is possible. Non-Muslims in a Muslim state are treated like black people in the Jim Crow South.

The Black Lives Matter era is over. The BLM organization turned out to be a fraud, and, worse, the anti-police movement caused a spike in crime that continues to this day. Voters have ejected Soros prosecutors, and even liberals are vowing to crack down on criminals.
The story of Marilyn Mosby illustrates the downfall of BLM. Mosby was the States Attorney in Baltimore when a man named Freddie Gray died while he was under arrest. She went on an anti-police campaign, over-charging the officers who were involved.
So she exemplified the zeitgeist, and, better yet, she was young and good-looking. So she was lionized by liberals, including those at Vogue magazine, who did a spread on her that I wrote about here. Vogue was hagiographic, mingling admiration for Mosby’s anti-police activism with appreciation of her style.

Researchers at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center have located a “kill switch” that can trigger the death of cancer cells. They identified a protein on the CD95 receptor, which is part of a cell’s communication system, that can “program” cancer cells to die. This significant discovery was detailed in a study published in the journal “Cell Death & Differentiation.”
Receptors like CD95 are proteins that cells use to receive signals from outside. CD95 has earned the nickname “death receptor” because it can send a signal to a cancer cell, causing it to die. This process was hard to control in the past, but the new discovery of a specific part of the receptor to target may change that.
Dr. Jogender Tushir-Singh, an associate professor at UC Davis and the senior author of the study, said, “Previous efforts to target this receptor have been unsuccessful. But now that we’ve identified this epitope, there could be a therapeutic path forward to target Fas in tumors.”
