Jeff Bezos is the latest billionaire name added to the roster of those who call Miami home in the post-pandemic era: Citadel’s Ken Griffin, venture-capitalist Peter Thiel, Goldman Sachs’ Douglas Sacks, Tiger Global Management co-founder Scott Shleifer and Third Point founder and CEO Dan Loeb are also neighbors.
“I actually wasn’t too surprised. I feel like he’s coming back home, right?” fellow billionaire and OneWorld Properties CEO Peggy Olin told FOX News Digital. “He has a place of Miami in his heart. He went to Palmetto High, his parents are in Miami. I think for him, it’s a natural move.”
“I wasn’t shocked. I guess my reaction was, of course, why not?” Ytech CMO Andrew Kraynak also told Digital. “What’s interesting about Amazon, it is a very decentralized business. And we’ve seen what they’ve been going through in terms of creating an East Coast, kind of second headquarters. And right now, it’s a very interesting organization. What that means for Amazon in South Florida, I wouldn’t hazard a guess. I’m sure there’s probably a play there.”
Not having to pay Washington state taxes probably had something to do with it.

Cass Sunstein has a lovely New York Times essay that tries to give us back the word “Liberal.” I hope it works.
“Liberal” from “Libertas” means, at bottom, freedom. In the 19th century, “liberals” were devoted to personal, economic, and increasing social freedom from government restraint. “Conservatives” wanted to maintain aristocratic privileges, and government interventions in the traditional way of doing things. The debate was not so obvious. Conservatives defended their view of aristocratic power in a noblesse-oblige concern for little people that the unfettered free market might leave behind, in a way quite reminiscent of today’s elites who think they should run the government in the name of the downtrodden (or “nudge” them, if I can poke a little fun at Sunstein’s earlier work).
But by the 1970s, the labels had flipped. “Liberals” were advocates of big-state interventionism, in a big tent that included communists and marxists. It became a synonym of “left.” “Conservatives” became a strange alliance of free market economics and social conservatism. The word “classical liberal” or “libertarian” started to be used to refer to heirs of the enlightenment “liberal” tradition, broadly emphasizing individual liberty and limited rule of law government in both economic and social spheres.
But broadly, “liberal” came to mean more government intervention and Democrat, while “conservative” came to mean less state intervention and Republican, at least in rhetoric.

There are two annual traditions that make up Thanksgiving. One is the ancient and venerable tradition of thanking the Creator for our bounty while the other is the more recent leftist tradition of turning the day into a festival of grievances, a ‘festivus’ during which they pick political arguments with family members and launch into screeds about how Thanksgiving is the product of imperialism and colonialism.
The Nation magazine recently proposed replacing it with a ‘Truthsgiving’ during which we will all confess our crimes and ponder how much better life would be if the Pilgrims had never come to America, and the Nazis and Communists had won WWII and gone on to exterminate 70% of the population of the planet.
Wrecking Thanksgiving, like the family, womens’ sports and Star Wars is just one of those things lefties do. The perpetual teenage tantrums that began with Karl Marx and ended with Cousin Jan screaming at the Thanksgiving table about how nobody understands Hamas and how inspiring she found Osama bin Laden’s letter are the essence of the movement.

When the story of the gang attack in France appeared in the news feed several days ago, the article was very careful not to mention ethnicity. I wondered if it might be gypsies, since it occurred in a rural area, but no, it has since emerged that it was African and/or Arab “youths” — the usual suspects.

Why apologize when you can just wait and hope people forget what you did wrong? As we enter the season of goodwill and gratitude, that’s the question posed by disgraced former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who this year is thankful for the complicity of his allies as he attempts to stage a comeback.
While New York City mayor Eric Adams chokes on a different kind of Turkey, Politico writes that Cuomo has “begun in recent days to gauge the viability of a potential mayoral bid.”
Cuomo resigned as governor in ignominy back in August 2021 after an investigation by New York attorney general Leticia James claimed that he had sexually harassed as many as eleven women.
Lest we forget, Cuomo’s resignation in the light of the James investigation resulted in the New York State Assembly suspending a separate probe into his other serious transgression: his decision to direct care homes to take in Covid-positive patients and undercount nursing home Covid deaths by as much as 50 percent as a result.

In public events, I’ve sometimes given an unexpectedly appreciative nod to the hard left. It’s laudable, I allow, to stick up for the disadvantaged. Young people naturally hope to revamp the creaky, hypocritical institutions they inherit, just as my generation did in the 1960s. Fairness — a more complex concept than it first appears — is inherently appealing. Thus the initial impulse to embrace identity politics is often benign.
This concession is calculated. Being charitable carves out space for me to rip this odious ideology to shreds thereafter. Yet given that when younger I was a fervent liberal Democrat, my token peace offering has always been sincere.
I take it back. After all the identitarian left’s defense of peoples historically wronged, all their horror of the “violence” in silence or biologically correct pronouns, all their advancement of “diversity and inclusion” — which you would suppose would encompass all religions and all minorities, especially the persecuted ones — ghoulish celebrations of Hamas’s throat-slitting melee in southern Israel last month among some western “progressives” were incomprehensible at first. But on reflection, the BLM brigade joining the ghastly Muslim chant of “Glory to our martyrs” makes perfect sense.

I’m old enough to remember when Joe Scarborough spent most of his show kissing Donald Trump’s ass. Those were the days. Cast your mind back to 2015. Mika and Joe were still just “co-workers” and they would constantly yuck it up with then candidate Donald J. Trump. Don’t take my word for it — even the Washington Post wrote about their love affair with the Donald, describing the theme of these interviews as “bonhomie.” Erik Wemple explained, “Trump is often on the phone; some decent, journalistic questions get lobbed at Trump, often by Willie Geist; Trump makes more claims than the crew can possibly fact-check; and there’s a great deal of talk about polls.” When Willie Geist is asking the hard-hitting questions, you know you are in friendly territory.
Alas, that was then. If Scarborough’s most recent televised tirade against the former president tells us anything it is that the honeymoon is long over. Sitting next to the permanently nodding Mika, Joe ranted about the danger that is posed by candidate Donald Trump. “And if he is voted into office, then a lot of these people that are talking about literal, or figurative, or whatever the hell they’re saying, are going to look like idiots,” the host blustered. To be fair, if I was going to trust anyone on the subject of looking like an idiot, it would be Mr. Scarborough.
The fear-mongering wasn’t done just yet though. He continued, “Because he will do, he will get away with, he will imprison, he will execute, whoever he is allowed to imprison, execute, drive from the country.”
You would think that, if such were possible, he’d have done that the first time around.

A tragedy occurred a few days ago in the small town of Crépol, in the Drôme region of southern France. During a village ball, some individuals appeared, spreading panic and terror and causing the death of Thomas, a boy of 16. Today, journalists and politicians are engaged in a veritable battle of semantics. A mere news item or a major event? Ordinary violence or savagery? A brawl or an assault? Every word used to describe this episode has far-reaching consequences. Once again, the Left shines in its denial of reality concerning both the origin of the attackers and the nature of the victims.
After a few days of uncertainty about the exact sequence of events, the facts are gradually beginning to be reconstructed with precision. On the night of November 18, 300 to 400 young people gathered in the village hall of the small village of Crépol in the department of Drôme for “a simple dance party with a sound system, organised by the village’s festivities committee,” according to Martine Lagut, the mayor of the village.
A gang of individuals broke into the party and spread terror by attacking the participants with knives. A youngster of 16, Thomas, a member of the local rugby club, was killed. He died of a stab wound during his transfer to a hospital in Lyon. Two others are still in critical condition. In all, there were 17 victims.
…
The accumulation of evidence against the killers—young people from North African immigrant families—has not prevented a number of left-wing columnists from persisting in their denial. One of them, on the set of BFM TV, refused to dramatise the situation and drew a parallel between the Crépol tragedy and the children’s novel La guerre des boutons (The War of the Buttons), recounting children’s fights in the countryside in days gone by—a terrifying blindness given the seriousness of the events. Others have tried to shift the blame by accusing the bouncer in charge of security at the entrance of the ball of possible “racial profiling.” In brief, the victims “had it coming.” The accusation of “recuperation,” as in the atrocious case of the murder of little Lola, was also repeated by journalists. Again on BFM TV, they condemned the allegedly far-right scenario of “these people from the suburbs that would go all the way to the countryside to attack these peaceful French people.” “It’s a gross exaggeration,” concluded the presenter on the set.

The European Parliament will most likely approve a report on Wednesday, November 22nd, that seeks to amend the treaties of the European Union, liquidating member states’ veto rights, and giving more power to EU institutions in what conservative forces are describing as a dangerous power grab.
As we previously reported, the proposals were put forward by the so-called ‘Verhofstadt Group’, a circle of MEPs led by the Eurofederalist Guy Verhofstadt from the liberal Renew group. The plans would see a massive transfer of competences from a national to an EU level, and the unanimity voting system—veto rights of member states—would almost completely be abolished, to be replaced by majority or qualified majority voting.
The EU would be exclusively responsible for issues concerning the environment, public health, industry, and education. There would be shared competences with member states in the areas of energy, foreign affairs, external security and defence, and external border policy.

In the movies, safe deposit boxes are magic: Located in bank vaults, they’re depicted as the most secure things in the universe. Thieves targeting safe deposit boxes must plan for decades and bring in dozens of experts. If a character wants to keep something absolutely safe (whether it’s jewels or important documents), they stick it in a safe deposit box and no force in the universe can disturb it.
Unfortunately, that isn’t actually true. Safe deposit boxes aren’t very safe; banks increasingly regard them as more trouble than they’re worth, and they’re not well-regulated. There are exactly zero federal laws covering safe deposit boxes, and they largely operate in the murky world of lease agreements. And if you actually read the (probably very brief) rental agreement you sign with the bank, you’d likely discover that the bank has restricted its liability to a ridiculous level.
Most surprisingly, according to the Office of Comptroller of Currency (OCC) your bank can “drill” your safe deposit box open (removing the contents) under a wide range of conditions, including court orders and search warrants, failure to pay fees, because of branch closure—or because the bank messes up their records. So if you have a safe deposit box and it gets drilled, what can you do?
Notice the question on your Federal tax return about whether you have a safety deposit box, which (if you answer honestly) tells them that there is something there to drill for.

Over the last week we have seen an all-out mainstream media assault on Elon Musk and X, formerly known as Twitter. We are told that Musk is embroiled in an antisemitism scandal. We are informed that Musk liked a post which said that Jews deliberately flood white majority Western nations with immigration, and that this is a vile, far right conspiracy theory.
At the same time as Musk was personally smeared by comments on a post he had liked, a Media Matters investigation declared that X had been featuring Neo Nazi and far right material alongside adverts purchased by top companies. In other words, people who had paid for positive advertising of their own choice were actually being tainted with extremist far right content, since extremist far right content is what Elon Musk loves and has allowed to flourish.
In response to this scandal and the Media Matters ‘revelations’, key advertisers using X/Twitter, like Apple, Disney and a few other very well-known companies, have withdrawn from advertising on Musk’s platform.

Most of the time, single posts on Twitter/X aren’t worth rebuking with an entire piece, but Washington Post media reporter Paul Farhi laid out an absolute banger this weekend when he lamented the idea of “citizen journalists” not being as professional, trained or equipped as he or his colleagues at major news outlets like the Post, New York Times or CNN. The idea that citizen journalists are not every bit as capable as journalists employed by these outlets (and others) is ridiculous and should be rebuffed.
Farhi posted, “Someone invented the phrase ‘citizen journalism’ a few years ago to describe amateurs doing the work of pros. Yes, it occasionally works, but probably no more often than ‘citizen cop,’ ‘citizen attorney’ or ‘citizen soldier.’”
There’s a lot to unpack here, starting with the idea of citizen versus professional journalist. When professional journalists at Newsweek sat on the Monica Lewinsky story, trying to figure out how to minimize the damage to their great white hope then-president Bill Clinton, a citizen journalist broke the story — perhaps the biggest of the decade. When professional journalists attempted to kill the John Edwards story, the National Enquirer ran with it and effectively ended any political ambitions Edwards may have had.

As Steve notes, the New York Times has finally gone after Robert F. Kennedy Jr., member of a family that has been “ersatz American royalty” for 60 years. The great Paul Johnson, who died at 94 back in January, had some thoughts on the Kennedys in A History of the American People, published in 1998.
Patriarch Joe Kennedy, appointed by Franklin Roosevelt to run the Securities and Exchange Commission, was “a crook and known to be such,” and FDR called him “a very dangerous man.” Joe was a big booster of son John Fitzgerald Kennedy, better known as “Jack” but with key realities carefully concealed.
“Strictly speaking Jack was never fit to hold any important public office,” Johnson explains, “and the list of lies told about his body by the Kennedy camp over the years is formidable.” That was also true of his alleged body of work.

The CIA was created after World War II to prevent another Pearl Harbor attack, writes Charles S. Faddis, a former CIA operations officer and Middle East station chief. Faddis believes the agency “no longer works,” an easy case to make but not exactly news.
Al Qaeda was well known but “we had not a single source inside that organization capable of warning us of the 9/11 attacks that would kill almost 3,000 Americans.” It took a decade to take out bin Laden, and one doubts it went down as portrayed in Zero Dark Thirty.
As with 9/11 “we received no warning prior to the outbreak of the pandemic,” and the CIA could “apparently provide no useful information regarding the origins of the disease,” still true years later. The CIA has “no sources inside China’s top bio lab,” which is probably true of most, if not all, of China. Faddis blames bureaucratization and politicization but may underestimate the problem in both cases.

Of course, Americans had long known that something had gone wrong at their colleges. They had increasingly encountered college graduates who were poorly educated in basic skills and lacked general knowledge—and yet highly politicized, and intolerant of different views and opinions. Ignorant but arrogant is a sad way to start an adult life.
College, the public knew, has certainly eroded from our cherished idea of a four-year idealized respite from adult employment. It once was intended to be a place where youth learned to be open-minded, tolerant, skilled, and eager to learn the nature and traditions of Western civilization, art, literature, languages, philosophy, and history.
Instead, all too often “college” has now descended into a six-to-seven-year misadventure that nationwide often results in only half those enrolled ever receiving degrees. Nearly all sink deeply in student debt. And yet for all the borrowed tuition money, few prove capable of writing analytically, speaking articulately, or knowing the general referents, past and present, of their very civilization.

The voting machines America is currently using need to go. They breed mistrust, and there’s a reason for that: They are not trustworthy. They are also inherently undemocratic.
No, I’m not talking about 2020–well, not as such. I’m talking about all the past elections since we started using these machines, as well as all the future ones until we come to our senses.
The recent Presidential election in Argentina had 30,000,000 paper ballots, and they were all counted (and the result reported) within one day. But no American county can do that.
The use of insecure, un-auditable voting machines appears to be designed to encourage fraud.

The Kennedy family has been ersatz American royalty starting almost immediately after John F. Kennedy’s assassination 60 years ago this week, the deliberate product of the relentless “Camelot” PR campaign. And certainly it has worked better for the extended Kennedy clan than for any other political dynasty in American history. It was enough for a Kennedy to attach himself or herself to a cause or charity for it to gain outsize media attention and elite legitimacy.
Certainly this has long been true especially of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has attached himself to an endless series of loony left-wing causes over the years, always evading any serious criticism because of his illustrious name. But now that his independent bid for the presidency threatens to derail a second term for Joe Biden, the mainstream media is suddenly saying—hey, wait a minute!
