The US government is the only sector to have notably borrowed on a net basis over the last five years. The market sees that as inflationary, driving yields higher.
The pandemic saw an increase in the borrowing of all sectors. But it was the government that saw the biggest rise in GDP terms, and it is the government whose debt is still considerably higher than it was before the pandemic – the debt-to-GDP ratio is up 16 percentage points over the last five years.

The extraordinary Hadrian X bricklaying robot rocks up to a building site looking like a regular truck, then extends a 32-m (105-ft) boom arm and starts precisely laying up to 300 large masonry blocks an hour. It’s pretty remarkable to watch.

“I don’t know too much about the book or the event, except the fact that many people who are in the gender studies and are well-educated, and queer studies have condemned the contents of the book; I trust their condemnation.”
So said a member of the University of Edinburgh’s academic staff when interviewed by a student journalist at a protest on the university campus last week. He was protesting the launch of Sex and Gender: a contemporary reader. Edited by Professor Alice Sullivan and Professor Selina Todd, it is published by one of the world’s largest and most prestigious academic publishers. Guests to the university were forced to clamber across protestors who not only sat in front of the barriers and refused to move, but grabbed guests’ ankles and legs to try to stop them reaching the venue, whilst chanting “Shame on you” and “Go home”. In one incident, the member of staff quoted above appeared to thrust his groin in front of a gap in the barrier, in what looked like an attempt to stop an older woman, escorted by security guards, from reaching the venue. Other protestors laughed and chanted as she picked her way through the jeering crowd and past a sign saying “FUCK TERFS”. The member of staff would later post accusations on Twitter/X that he’d been kicked, pushed, trodden on and shouted at, along with other accusations for which no evidence seems to exist.

Almost three years to the day after the murder of history teacher Samuel Paty by a Chechen Islamist, the murder of French teacher Dominique Bernard in Arras on Friday, October 13th, in similar circumstances, has revealed a whole chain of culpable public responsibilities, against a backdrop of migratory ideology and ideological blindness.
As soon as the terrible news of the murder of teacher Dominique Bernard in front of his pupils by a twenty-year-old man of Chechen origin, Mohammed Mogushkov, came to light, revelations followed one after another about the profile of the murderer and his background. Many whistleblowers and journalists have established with certainty that the man should never have crossed the teacher’s path and that the complicity of the state apparatus and migrant defence associations played a full part in the path that led him to commit his crime.

The American Mind.
Colinford Mattis went to Princeton University; Urooj Rahman went to Fordham. They earned their law degrees from NYU in 2018 and 2019, respectively, by which time they were saturated in the combustible self-righteousness of left-wing politics.
A spark arrived on May 30, 2020, when the George Floyd riots reached New York. Mattis and Rahman were angry: Rahman recorded herself opining that “all the police stations” and “probably all the courts” need to be burned down and “the only way they hear us is through violence.” She never defined “they” and never explained why she and Mattis were appropriate messengers. Their message was never particularly clear, though the “raised fist” T-shirt depicted in Rahman’s mugshot tells you what you need to know.
What was clear, however, was that Mattis and Rahman were bent on destroying a symbol of law and order. Around 1 a.m., Mattis drove a minivan toward an NYPD precinct in Brooklyn while Rahman sat in the passenger seat, armed with two Molotov cocktails. As they approached, Mattis parked the van, and Rahman exited the passenger side, ignited the incendiary, and threw the burning concoction through the window of a parked police van in the vicinity of other rioters. They fled but were arrested shortly thereafter. Police found another Molotov cocktail and precursor materials, indicating that Mattis and Rahman planned to do it again.
They were charged in a seven-count indictment. When charges were filed, a senior FBI official promised that “the consequences for conducting this alleged attack…will be severe.” Simultaneously, the NYPD’s police commissioner was “confident that the severest penalties under the law [would] be sought.” These claims were justified—one count of the indictment carried a 30-year minimum sentence.
But it never happened. Instead, Mattis and Rahman were sentenced to 12 and 15 months’ imprisonment respectively. How did this happen?

The moral nihilism and leftist willfulness of American higher education have finally been exposed by the harsh light of the Hamas barbarism, and for a change there are consequences. When a squishy, status-conscious centrist like Jon Huntsman tells the University of Pennsylvania that his “checkbook is closed” to further donations (Huntsman’s family has given tens of millions to Penn over the years) because Penn is “deeply adrift in ways that make it almost unrecognizable,” mired in “moral relativism” and a failed leadership that “fueled the university’s race to the bottom.”
At Harvard, the Wexner Foundation has terminated its long-term relationship with the Kennedy School of Government.
So after years of seeing universities issue official statements on ever major event like George Floyd, Trump’s election, Ukraine, etc, uniformly from a leftist perspective, suddenly the Chronicle of Higher Education says—maybe university leaders should stop making statements about every controversial news event, and embrace neutrality instead.. “Donald Trump Followers Targeted by FBI as 2024 Election Nears” headlined the October 4 report in Newsweek. “The federal government believes that the threat of violence and major civil disturbances around the 2024 U.S. presidential election is so great that it has quietly created a new category of extremists that it seeks to track and counter: Donald Trump’s army of MAGA followers.” Author William M. Arkin, an “award-winning journalist” and author of best-selling books, thus sets the tone right from the top.
Donald Trump has “followers,” language readers might expect for a religious cult leader, and these followers constitute an “army.” The challenge for the FBI, Arkin explains, “is to pursue and prevent what it calls domestic terrorism without direct reference to political parties or affiliations—even though the vast majority of its current ‘anti-government’ investigations are of Trump supporters, according to classified data obtained by Newsweek.” That data is not the article’s only source.
“A current FBI official who requested anonymity” told Arkin “the FBI is intent on stopping domestic terrorism and any repeat of the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.” No pushback from Arkin on the government claim that the Jan. 6 protesters were domestic terrorists launching an “attack” on the Capitol. They weren’t, and for the best reporting on Jan. 6 see Julie Kelly at American Greatness and Substack.

On Thursday, the Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a joint statement that cautions banks and other lenders against “discriminating” against borrowers on the basis of immigration status. These agencies admit that no such prohibition is explicit in the relevant statutes, but nevertheless, banks should beware of federal enforcement action….
“Immigration status” could simply refer to legal aliens who apply for loans or mortgages, but that phrase is usually used to refer to illegal immigrants. Commentators, as far as I can tell, have universally interpreted this statement as a warning to banks and other lenders not to “discriminate” against people whose very presence in this country is illegal. Given the lack of any qualification to the phrase “immigration status,” and the common meaning of that phrase, I think that interpretation is correct. The fact that the statement does not even bother to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants is telling.
I wonder when they’ll get around to characterizing a bank robbery as ‘undocumented withdrawal’.

Looks like the teddy bears and candles will be out in force tonight in Brussels and Stockholm: a young mujahid on a scooter with a gun has slaughtered two Swedes outside a stadium during a soccer match in Brussels. Mainstream media outlets will be doing their best to avoid mentioning the “Allahu Akhbar” aspect of the unfortunate incident, as well as the fact that the youthful militant was taking revenge on Swedes in the name of Allah for the burning of the Koran.
The following brief video shows the alleged attacker claiming responsibility for the murders. He seems to believe he killed three Swedish infidels, but the third shooting victim reportedly survived.

CNN has posted video of Anderson Cooper’s segment on the 10/7 slaughter at Israel’s Supernova music festival. CNN has posted the video below on X/Twitter. CNN has also posted it in what I believe to be unembeddable form here on its site.
I heard the audio on the Megyn Kelly Show today while driving to meet a friend for lunch. The video has a truth value that makes it worth pausing over.
Hamas murdered some 260 Jews at the festival. As in other 10/7 videos, the blood lust of the murderers is palpable. At one point Cooper presents the scene inside a bomb shelter turned death trap. It strikes me as a visual evocation of the Nazis’ extermination project and it is chilling.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has proposed an experiment in which it will provide additional benefits to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients who purchase more fruits and vegetables.
Named the Electronic Healthy Incentive Projects (eHip), the well-meaning programs are intended to encourage people on low-incomes to eat more healthy foods (MHFs).
(No, I made that last one up.)
As almost every endeavor undertaken by the government will demonstrate, well-meaning intentions that are funded via the force of law often go amiss — at best, achieving less than hoped, and at worst, achieving the opposite of what was intended.

Two Swedish nationals have been shot dead in Brussels as a football match between Belgium and Sweden was due to take place on Monday evening, police said, and Belgium raised its terror alert to the highest level.
A man in a video on social media claimed that he was the assailant and that he was from Islamic State.
…
One Belgium newspaper said a witness said the shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar” before the shots were fired.

The virulent anti-Israel protests across America and Europe throw a glaring light on the bizarre alliance between left-wing activists and militant Muslims. That odd combination has been the bedrock of political activism at universities and in the streets for years. It began in universities, where it now dominates political discourse, threatens Jewish students, and intimidates anyone brave enough to voice their dissent. We can now see how it has spread far beyond the campus.
