Pauline Kael knew she wasn’t a representative American.
The onetime New Yorker film critic is famous in folk memory for having said she didn’t know anyone who voted for Richard Nixon in 1972, when he won a 49-state landslide.
The way her words are misremembered, she was surprised that someone so reviled by her social set could win the White House.
In fact, she wasn’t surprised: Kael told the Modern Language Association in a Dec. 28 speech that year, “I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they (i.e., Nixon voters) are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken.”
Kael’s example is worth keeping in mind when thinking about next year’s election.

Thirteen years ago Thilo Sarrazin was reviled and cancelled for daring to suggest that Germany, through its disastrous migration policies, was in the process of abolishing itself.
Well, now it’s pretty much official: Germany has abolished itself. I assume that being able to say “I told you so” is cold comfort for Mr. Sarrazin in his role as a German Cassandra.
An arrogant Iranian-German woman named Naika Foroutan has written a book in which she admonishes Germans “who have lived here for a longer time” to get used to the fact that their country no longer belongs to them.

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos was surprised by a new Wall Street Journal poll that showed President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump tied at 46% in a potential 2024 rematch. The survey of 1500 registered voters was conducted August 24-30.
On Sunday’s edition of “This Week,” Stephanopoulos said, “It is kind of shocking in a way that despite all of the baggage that Donald Trump carries, he’s tied with Joe Biden right now.
His “shock” is evidence that Trump Derangement Syndrome is a very real thing and it is blinding Democrats to Biden’s obvious vulnerabilities. It allows them to ignore the fact that the president of the United States has become the laughingstock of the world. He’s barely able to read a speech off of a teleprompter, often butchering and even slurring his words, particularly when he tries to speak fast.

Joe Rogan and ‘old school Democrat’ Bill Maher have had it with progressive policies towards crime and policing, and the hypocrisy over ‘black lives’ when blacks are killing each other.
“Murders have been happening way out of control in Chicago among the African-American Community for far too long and not really reported in the same way they should be,” lamented Maher in an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience which aired on Saturday, adding “It’s amazing how black lives don’t seem to matter when they’re taken by black lives,” pointing to the MSM’s asymmetric reporting.
“Their idea was like go in arrest the big kingpins and then we’ll clean up the city. It didn’t work at all.”

Next year’s presidential election here in America could turn out to be the most absurd in the nation’s history.
On the one hand, Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, much like Navalny in Russia, would be under indictment by the justice machine led by his own opponent, the sitting president. On the other hand, Joe Biden, the sitting president himself, could be under impeachment by a Congress led by his opponent’s own party.
There is a fair chance that when we get to about this time next year, neither Trump nor Biden will be on the ballot. However, this is already gearing up to be such an unprecedented presidential campaign that previous experience is of limited use in predicting its outcome. For one, the left still has not been able to establish that their indictments against Trump also make him ineligible to run for president. This opens many absurd scenarios, including one where Trump is found guilty of whatever charge they have thrown at him, goes to jail, wins the presidential election, takes the oath of office, and pardons himself.
But wait, it gets better.

The end of summer is finally here, which means the election season officially starts. I have said this a million times, but it bears repeating. I am not all that interested in this election. There is a very good chance that it makes 2020 look like the model of integrity. The shenanigans in both parties will set all-time single season records for shenanigans. I like shenanigans as much as the next guy, but I am struggling to get interested in what is coming down the road.
The reason is mendacity fatigue. There is a limit to how much lying one can take before you find it both boring and exhausting. Everything the Never Trump loons say is a lie. Everything the various influencers online say about the candidates is a lie. The regime toadies do nothing but lie. Of course, the regime is a volcano of lies that rain down on us all day, every day. It is exhausting trying to keep up with the lies and there is no real benefit to doing it. It is all a pointless noise.
That is another thing that is sapping my interest. If there was some chance that someone could do something useful in the White House, I could maybe talk myself into grasping at that straw, but that is the lesson of the last decade. There is so solution at the ballot box. If by some miracle Trump wins, we know he will do nothing, even if he actually tries to do something. None of the zombies will do anything but more of the things everyone hates.
Maybe that is the 4-D chess being played. The people in charge have grown tired of the farce of elections, so they are trying to make them as awful as possible. At some point they offer blessed relief by cancelling further elections. To save our democracy, we have to end these terrible elections that are causing people to lose faith in democracy. It sounds ridiculous, but is it anymore absurd that the stuff we now see every day in the political system?
Highly recommended.

When a fragrance wafted through the bedrooms of older adults for two hours every night for six months, memories skyrocketed. In fact, participants in this study by neuroscientists from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), reaped a 226% increase in cognitive capacity compared to the control group. The researchers say the finding transforms the long-known tie between smell and memory into an easy, non-invasive technique for strengthening memory and potentially deterring dementia.

Mother Earth is quite adept at carbon sequestration, and carries it out with great efficiency. A surplus of CO2 in the atmosphere is absorbed by green plants during photosynthesis, and stimulates the growth of additional plant biomass to take advantage of all the ambient CO2.
I don’t see why this is considered a bad thing. More CO2 leads to more plant growth. More plant growth means greater crop yields and more acreage put into cultivation. The planet produces more food, which means that fewer poor people will starve.
Mind you, that last part may not be considered a negative outcome by the “Visualize Industrial Collapse” crowd. When you consider the human race to be a harmful virus infecting Gaia, the starvation and death of billions of people is something to be desired.
For everyone but the depopulation fanatics, however, more food production is a good thing, and the increase in atmospheric CO2 is something to be applauded.

Rice is arguably the world’s most important staple crop. About half of the global population depends on it for sustenance.
But, like other staples such as wheat and corn, rice is cultivated annually. That means replanting the fields year after year, at huge cost to both the farmers and the land. For years, scientists have been tinkering with rice strains to create a perennial variety – one that would regrow after harvest without the need to be resown.
For what may be the first time in about ten thousand years of human rice cultivation, the new strains stay productive harvest after harvest.
This could be HUGE. It will save tremendous amounts of labor, time, and expense. And think of the advantage if perennial forms of wheat or maize could be grown.

James Taranto observed in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal apropos of the Dem/media assault on Justice Thomas that “[o]ne reason Americans don’t trust the media is that politically biased reporters routinely adulterate the news with tendentious language and prepackaged opinions. The result is crude propaganda—lousy opinion writing and unreliable information rolled into one and deceptively packaged as straight news.” Take the case of the Washington Post and Post “national columnist” Philip Bump.

Ali Bongo was elected President of Gabon in 2009, re-elected in 2016, and again this week. Many election observers complained of multiple voting irregularities in all three elections, but Mr. Bongo told a friendly media that those observers were enemies of democracy, the people had spoken, and he would humbly serve his country as he was called upon to do. Coincidentally, he has been accused of attempting to control the media as well.
Gabon is a member of OPEC and brings in billions in oil revenue every year, but the population remains poor. Mr. Bongo has been accused of enriching himself and his family by selling influence to foreign interests. He has used the police and the courts to prosecute his political opponents. He has even used riots and violent gangs to intimidate voters who don’t support him.
I know what you’re thinking — thank God I live in the land of the free and home of the brave — nothing like that could ever happen here. Gosh, those poor third-world people sure have screwed up politics, don’t they? Lordy.

About ten years on from the first appearance of a San Francisco “poop map,” which documented human waste incidents on the city’s streets, the Bay Area gem is struggling more than ever. It boasts a 25.7 percent office vacancy rate, nearly ten percentage points higher than the average rate across the United States. The city’s population fell significantly during the pandemic. Property crime rates are the highest of any city in the country. The streets are filled with homeless encampments that foster grime, drug abuse, sexual assault and violence. Just a few days ago, fashion retailer Nordstrom closed its five-level store in San Francisco after thirty-five years of business. The store had been a fixture of the city’s downtown area.

Pretty much everyone now agrees that shutting down our schools during the covid epidemic, at the demand of teachers’ unions, was one of the most catastrophic policy decisions of modern times. As I have said before, it is unfortunate that some old and very sick people had their demises hastened by covid, but what government did to our children, for no good reason, was a crime.
Having skipped school for a year or more courtesy of the teachers’ unions, a great many kids have never gone back, at least not on a consistent basis. Why should they, once not showing up got the official OK? Alpha News has the distressing statistics for Minnesota. True, Minnesota is a deeply troubled state. But I doubt the numbers would be much different in other blue states.
People are realizing that government schools aren’t the valuable asset that they once where, and are now actively harmful, both to a child’s education and to society in general. Parents are discovering that there are other and better resources available. In a (mostly) free-market system, that’s all it takes.

I stood across the street from Seattle’s City Hall, next to a long line of tents. There were more than fifteen of them, no more than a few feet apart. In between the tents, furniture and trash was piled high. The encampment took up the entire sidewalk, forcing pedestrians to walk in the street and triggering nonstop honking from passing cars. In a parking lot on the corner, people from a local mutual aid group stood at a booth, handing out food and water. They had signs making clear their views: “Stop the Sweeps,” “You sweep we strike,” “Fuck Capitalism,” “Equity now!” and “Smash Fascism.”
This particular aid group were self-identified anarchists. I recognized one of the members, who had contacted my family a few months ago because he was unhappy with an article I had written criticizing the decriminalization of drugs. Nearly every tent carried one of the messages the anarchists had on their signs, shirts, buttons, posters and bumper stickers. A few homeless people told me that the group had spray-painted the slogans on the tents, and that they’d felt like they had no choice but to go along because the anarchists had provided the tents. One admitted it was best to let them do it because opposing them could get the homeless folks banned from the area.
