Using the smartphone as a point of entry, young people could be inspired to understand that every significant technological breakthrough that has transformed society results from continued human imagination, failure, persistence, courage and, above all else, ambition. Understanding the evolution of the smartphone could, in turn, spark dreams about inventing the future for understanding and changing the world for the better. But praising young people’s apparent technological prowess does the opposite. It encourages complacency and the lowering of ambition.
The result is as depressing as it is inevitable. Instead of a spark for knowledge and a future-oriented aspiration, the smartphone has become a tool of self-reflected indulgence and narcissism. Instead of inspiring young people to raise their eyes from their screens and engage the world around them, we have kindled introspection, a quest for inner identities which fatalistically trap us in the very biology our forefathers overcame with their imaginations.
I have an iPhone SE. Making phone calls is about #45 on the list of the top things I use it for. In fact, I don’t remember the last time I actually made a phone call on it (not to be confused with the last time a spammer tried to call me).

Right now, searching for a job in America means that you’re part of a wildly and almost hilariously broken process. I’ve experienced more false leads, dead ends, scams, sadness and silence than your Facebook Marketplace interaction — and it’s only getting worse.
If you currently have a job, congratulations. For real. But if you’ve held that job for a while, you might have forgotten (for good reason) the challenges leading up to that job. Whatever path you took from “Oh Shit” to “Thank God” is no match for what job applicants currently face. In fact, America’s job market increasingly feels like it’s working against its applicants…
…and that’s because it is.

When the ‘Rhodes Must Fall’ campaign broke out in Oxford, Nigel Biggar rose to the occasion and engaged the ‘decolonising’ agitators in a public debate. He now admits to having been a little more naïve back in 2015 than he is today. For one thing, he seemed to think that this was a good faith discussion about history. Yet the leader of the Rhodes Must Fall side made it clear within the first minute of his speech that the Cecil Rhodes statue outside Oriel College, Oxford, is not a stand-alone offence, but just one “emblem” among many of an inexpungeable guilt, a totemic symbol of a civilisation that was built on white supremacy. Europe, he added, is still plagued by the legacy of this original sin, to the ‘systemic’ disadvantage of non-Europeans who for some reason continue to cross the Mediterranean in vast numbers to reach this irredeemably racist hellhole.
This must have caught Biggar off-guard, for he showed up to the debate armed with more old-fashioned weapons—things like facts, figures, even quotes from Rhodes himself, none of which his opponents bothered to rebut. “Thus did I stumble, blindly, into the Imperial History Wars,” he recalls in his splendid book, Colonialism: A Moral Reckoning. Biggar won the debate by Socratic standards, but not by the sophistical ones operative on the other side and, regrettably it seems, in the packed Oxford Union audience as well. This begs the question: what really motivated this enthusiastic crowd, and what motivates others like them, if not a noble hunger for the vicarious experience and practical wisdom that knowledge of history confers?

The American Mind.
The entire premise of the “Documents Case” against President Donald Trump is illegitimate and a direct assault on the Constitution and the separation of powers doctrine. In pursuing 41 felony counts against the president for possessing classified information, prosecutor Jack Smith is engaged in a work of legal abuse without parallel in American history.
A thorough review of the facts, the law, and the Constitution itself indicates that Donald Trump, as President of the United States, had the right to know every secret contained in the executive branch during his time in office. Moreover, as president, Donald Trump had every right to declassify and make public whatever documents or state secrets he chose while in office. In addition, the correct understanding of the separation of powers doctrine makes clear that Congress does not have the right to proscribe how the president is to conduct purely executive branch business either during or after his term. From these premises we can assert that the Presidential Records Act of 1978 is unconstitutional and that any documents discovered in President Trump’s possession after his presidency are presumptively legal for him to possess and dispose of as he sees fit.

Jann Wenner: my feelings don’t care about your facts
Sometimes it takes a dishonest newspaper to put a lying magazine in its place.
On Friday, the New York Times published an interview with Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner — and the Gray Lady did not hold back. Interviewer David Marchese asked Wenner to defend the magazine’s now discredited University of Virginia rape story, accusing the publication of putting a “juicy story” ahead of the truth.

It pays to be a politician—literally.
That’s the argument of conservative commentator Matt Lewis’s new book Filthy Rich Politicians, lambasting the culture of corruption in politics that stems from elected officials monetizing their power in the most flagrant possible ways.
The timing of the book’s publication comes at a populist moment, with the hit song “Rich Men North of Richmond” having topped the Billboard charts and reflecting widespread angst about the growing chasm between the haves and have-nots. Lewis, refreshingly, is able to criticize the excesses of the ruling class without getting mired in the self-defeating grievance that defines so much of today’s populist movement.
Through outlining too-good-to-be-true book deals to hiring family members on staff to capitalizing on all-too-timely stock trades, Lewis takes readers through an eye-opening tour of lawmakers’ conflicts of interest that leave so many Americans jaded toward the Swamp that is Washington, D.C.
As Lewis puts it: “The rich get elected and the elected get rich.”

America marked a grim anniversary on August 30. That was the date, two years ago, when the United States ended its military presence in Afghanistan. The war that began there in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks lasted a full two decades. The war ended with a botched American retrograde that led directly to the deaths of 13 brave servicemen and thousands of stranded American citizens and Afghan allies.
The collapse of U.S. resolve to win the war reflected an impatience on the part of the American public, spurred on by populist and isolationist rhetoric that has steadily grown since the financial crisis of 2008. The negotiated defeat, which culminated with the Pentagon embarrassingly referring to the Taliban as our “Afghan partners,” began with President Barack Obama but continued through the administrations of Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The duplicitous government of Qatar hosted the negotiations and guided the process of American surrender through all three administrations.
In the final analysis, however, the disastrous withdrawal—leading directly to unnecessary deaths, unmitigated chaos, and the return of the brutal Taliban government—is the responsibility of one man: President Joe Biden.

Earlier this month, Princeton University professor Robert P. George was slated to give a talk at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, including “a discussion of the importance of free and open discourse during college of the great questions of human life.” That’s according to an email from the organizing professor obtained by the student newspaper, The Elm.
But apparently “a discussion of the importance of free and open discourse” was too much for Washington College students to stomach.
“Protesters at Washington College … were successful in silencing the speaker, Robert P. George,” reported The Star Democrat, a local Maryland newspaper.

Much has been made of the September 9, 2023 simultaneous reports in The New York Times and Vanity Fair of the claims of a former Secret Service agent, Paul Landis, who was part of the security detail in Dallas, Texas when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Like so many reports by such media that have covered up the truth of the assassination for sixty years, this one about “the magic bullet” is also a red herring.
It encourages pseudo-debates and confusion and is a rather dumb “limited hangout,” which is a strategy used by intelligence agencies to dangle some truth in order to divert attention from core facts of a case they are desperate to conceal. With these particular articles, they are willing to suggest that maybe the Warren Commission’s magic bullet claim is possibly incorrect. This is because so many people have long come to realize that that part of the propaganda story is absurd, so the coverup artists are willing to suggest it might be wrong in order to continue debating meaningless matters based on false premises in order to solidify their core lies.

Social media has been awash with videos of migrants storming the shores of Italy in recent days, and Italy’s nominally conservative government is being forced to respond.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, known for his hawkish stance on immigration during his tenure as interior minister in 2018, said on Wednesday that when 120 boats filled with migrants arrive on the shores of Italy at the same time, “it is not a spontaneous phenomenon, it is a declaration of war on Europe.”

As recently as the early Nineties, when the great cities of the Midwest and East Coast were careening toward what seemed like an inevitable downturn, the urban agglomerations along the Pacific coast offered a demonstrably brighter urban future. From San Diego to the Puget Sound, urban centers along America’s western edge continued to thrive and expand as migrants from other parts of the country, and the world, crowded in.
In the process, the Pacific cities seized the economic initiative. The West Coast became home to the country’s premier trade entrepôt and its dominant entertainment and technology centers, and home to five of the world’s six most valuable companies.
Yet now these same cities — despite differing histories and industrial mixes — face a precipitous decline. Never before have all the burgeoning cities of the future, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland, started to shrink. This is, at least in part, a reaction to high prices, relentless property crime, homelessness — San Francisco’s rate of homelessness, for example, is twelve times the national average — and diminished economic opportunity, particularly for the middle and working classes.

When we started this web site, we spent a lot of time criticizing what was then called the “mainstream media.” Over the years, I have done this less and less. Twenty years ago, the legacy press at least pretended to be fair and objective its reporting, so we pointed out errors and biases. But today, the pretense is gone: most media outlets are shills for the Democratic National Committee, and make no bones about it. Pointing out bias has become mostly pointless.
At times, though, it can still be entertaining. I wrote yesterday about Susanna Gibson, Democratic candidate for the Virginia House, who raised money (likely for her campaign, it appears) by going on a porn site called Chaturbate and performing sex acts with her husband while asking the audience–she had more than 5,000 followers–for “tips.” You can think that is depraved or you can consider it enterprising, but there is zero doubt about what she did.
Unless you are reading the New York Times. In its effort to help the Democrats in Virginia, the Times slides from spin to outright falsehoods. It headlines: “State House Candidate in Virginia Condemns Leak of Sex Tapes.” But there was no “leak.” Susanna Gibson performed sex acts in public, for money. The videos were posted by her, not someone else. Nor was there a “sex tape,” which carries connotations of nonconsensual posting of a private video by another party. No: Gibson did this herself, publicly, for cash. And the paper’s suggestion that the story here is Gibson’s “condemnation” of Republicans, not what she did, is risible.

A Virginia Democrat running for a seat in the House of Delegates claims to have been the victim of a “sex crime.” She wants the FBI to investigate “leaks” of her “online activity” that she is calling an “illegal invasion of [her] privacy designed to humiliate” her and her family, according to the New York Times.
Sounds bad, but wait until you read the fine print. The 40-year-old Democrat, Susanna Gibson, along with her husband, moonlighted as pornographers on an X-rated website, including while she was a candidate for office. In exchange for “tips,” the duo offered to perform various sex acts in front of the camera, including but not limited to urination and violent sex.

The judge who vacated the conviction of the disgraced former president of Penn State University after he was found guilty of covering up Jerry Sandusky’s sexual abuse of minors could soon get a promotion.
Senate Democrats are primed to confirm Karoline Mehalchick to the Middle District of Pennsylvania on Thursday. Mehalchick, who serves as a magistrate judge in the state, has a history of contentious rulings: She has had at least 31 decisions reversed in less than a decade on the bench.
But no ruling was more controversial than her 2019 decision to let then-Penn State president Graham Spanier off on a technicality after a jury found him guilty of child endangerment in 2017. Mehalchick ruled that prosecutors had misapplied the child endangerment statute to Spanier, who in 2001 did not notify police that Sandusky, then-Penn State’s assistant football coach, raped a child on campus.
Mehalchick’s ruling let Spanier walk free for over a year, until an appeals court reinstated his original sentence. Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and sentenced to up to 60 years in prison.

Many parents, regardless of their religion, quote this biblical truth found in Proverbs: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
But in today’s culture, parents aren’t the only ones seeking to “train up” a child in the way he or she should go. Now, perhaps more than ever, we live in a society that wants to tell your child which way to go.
Even in the most radical left cities in America, however, it’s still possible to raise kids who understand the truth, Katy Faust says.
