Just Say ‘No’ to Spring Forward/Fall Back: Leaving Clocks Unchanged Is One of Best Decisions I’ve Ever Made

11th January 2023

Daily Signal.

I’ve taken a stand against arbitrary and capricious federal mandates. Just because the federal government says that we should shift our schedules by one hour twice a year doesn’t mean we have to.

It doesn’t save daylight. It doesn’t save energy. It’s a hassle, pure and simple.

Plus, the terms “daylight saving” time and “standard” time are meaningless today. Thanks to President George W. Bush’s misguided energy bill of 2005, we are now on “standard” time for only one-third of the year. The true standard in this country today is the other eight months of “daylight saving” time.

Ron Paul: Trump’s Tax Returns Show Evil of the Income Tax

10th January 2023

Read it.

The final act of the Democrat majority on the House Ways and Means Committee was to make public several years of Donald Trump’s tax returns, which the Committee obtained after a prolonged legal battle. The tax returns confirmed that, despite being one of the richest people in America, Donald Trump paid very little in federal income tax. In fact, in at least one year he paid under a thousand dollars.

The tax code is so complex, and so stuffed with special favors for special interests, that anyone who can afford expert help can play it like a guitar–and avoid most tax liability.

When I was in law school, my tax professor would come in the first day of class with a stack of paper about two feet high and place it on his desk. “This is the Internal Revenue Code”, he would say. Picking up the top sheet, he would say “This tells you what tax you need to pay.” Then he would put his hand on the rest of the stack and say, “This tells you how you can avoid paying that tax.” Leaving his hand on the taller stack, he would say “This is what we teach here.”

Caldwell School District Meeting Ends in Chaos

10th January 2023

Read it.

People were lined up outside the Caldwell District Office where the school board holds their annual and regular board meetings this Monday evening. The majority of the people there were concerned with one specific policy being discussed at this month’s meeting, proposed policy 3281.

The proposed policy is about gender identity and sexual orientation and how the district could make those children feel more comfortable in school by adopting policies that allowed them to use bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice and be addressed by their preferred pronouns.

Parents everywhere are pushing back against Wokeness.

US Farmers Win Right to Repair John Deere Equipment

10th January 2023

BBC.

Consumer groups have for years been calling on companies to allow their customers to be able to fix everything from smartphones to tractors.

The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) and Deere & Co. signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Sunday.

“It addresses a long-running issue for farmers and ranchers when it comes to accessing tools, information and resources, while protecting John Deere’s intellectual property rights and ensuring equipment safety,” AFBF President Zippy Duvall said.

Under the agreement, equipment owners and independent technicians will not be allowed to “divulge trade secrets” or “override safety features or emissions controls or to adjust Agricultural Equipment power levels.”

(How would you like to have a name like ‘Zippy’?) The main problem was the working through Deere it took forever to get service, and when the harvest is waiting because you can’t get a company rep to service your machine, that’s Not Good.

Scientists One Step Closer to Turning Coal Into Graphite

9th January 2023

Read it.

A team at Ohio University carried out a series of simulations showing how coal can be converted to valuable—and carbon-neutral—materials like graphite and carbon nanotubes.

Using the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center’s Bridges-2 system, the researchers simulated coal and graphite in computer software and recreated the coal-to-graphite conversion virtually. Generations of scientists know that, at least in theory, it is possible to convert coal to graphite if the fossil fuel is put under enough pressure at a high enough temperature.

Superman is never around when you really need him.

Scientists Just Invented an Entirely New Way to Refrigerate Things

9th January 2023

Read it.

“The landscape of refrigerants is an unsolved problem,” says mechanical engineer Drew Lilley, from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. “No one has successfully developed an alternative solution that makes stuff cold, works efficiently, is safe, and doesn’t hurt the environment.”

“We think the ionocaloric cycle has the potential to meet all those goals if realized appropriately.”

So they haven’t invented it yet, they just have a theory that they might (and might not) turn into a viable product. But that’s as much truth as one can expect from the media these days….

More Proof That Nancy Pelosi Was More Responsible for J6 Riot Than Trump

9th January 2023

Read it.

A little-noticed bill passed before Christmas shows that the U.S. Senate knows Nancy Pelosi had more to do with the U.S. Capitol breach on January 6, 2021, than anything President Trump did that day. Indeed, Nancy Pelosi could be crowned Queen of the Mob, since her actions led to the crashing of the perimeter fences, general dysfunction, and deaths of Trump supporters that day.

Even after the one-sided January 6 Committee left Pelosi’s role on the cutting room floor, there’s one inescapable conclusion: If she’d done her job, there would have been no riot, no deaths of Trump supporters, no show trials, and no political prisoners sitting in solitary confinement in a D.C. gulag for two years awaiting trial. And there would have been no need for federal agents to “orchestrate” a riot.

Pelosi was more responsible for the marauding mob at the Capitol that day than anything President Trump did to “incite” his huge crowd of supporters — which he provably did not.

UK Health Official: 300-500 Weekly Deaths Due to Emergency Care Delays

9th January 2023

Read it.

The UK’s health service—a source of the nation’s pride for over 75 years—is close to buckling this winter due to an ill-timed confluence of pressures. Various senior health officials are sounding the alarm while preventable deaths are skyrocketing.

Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS (National Health Services) Confederation, told Sky News on January 2nd that he speaks to NHS leaders “every day and a lot of them, if not most of them, say this is the toughest winter they’ve ever dealt with,” adding his own view that they “cannot go on like this.”

How about that great comprehensive free government-provided health care? Don’t you wish we had a system like that in the U.S.? (We do. It’s called the VA. Ask veterans how that works out for them.)

Blacks & Ladders

9th January 2023

Read it.

Christmas and New Year’s have now come and gone, and doubtless, like most families, you spent much of your time over the holidays fighting with one another over age-old, tried-and-tested board games like Snakes & Ladders, Ludo, or Risk. But things could have been far worse. Had you been unlucky enough to receive one of the new wave of woke, “racially aware,” identity-politics-based board games that are increasingly appearing on the market, then far from a simple inter-sibling quarrel over whether or not your big sister really threw a six, a full-blown race war might well have broken out within the comfort of your own living room.

BBC Bias

9th January 2023

Read it.

Common sense. How can you possibly be against it? Americans of a certain generation used to talk about “Mom and apple pie” as examples of things that you cannot help but love, and it looks like common sense should get the same thumbs-up. But what is common sense?

If we are going to be persnickety then we have to go back to Plato and Aristotle. The ancient Greek word equivalent to “common sense” was doxa, which actually turns philologically into “dogma.” Latin-speaking translators of Aristotle (Boethius being the most famous, before he went to jail) used “sensus communis,” but this is more to do with our actual physical senses, as you would expect from the empirical Aristotle. It means that we all experience the world in much the same way. But common sense now has a more modern meaning, essentially translating from the classical world as “Don’t be a dumbass.”

The Left’s War on Children

8th January 2023

John Hinderaker at Power Line.

Liberals love to talk about children, but in many ways, their policies are devastating to the young. Education is near the top of the list: liberals run our public schools, and they are almost uniformly terrible. Schools are run for the benefit of teachers’ unions, administrators and diversity consultants. The kids are just disposable fodder.

Principal Ann Bonitatibus’ War On Merit

8th January 2023

John Derbyshire.

Aspiring doctors and lawyers should be admitted to training schools for those professions on the basis of knowledge and intelligence, as measured by competitive examinations, not because they fill out race and sex quotas. Those quotas are bad enough in college humanities departments; in practical professions like medicine, law, and engineering they might be lethal.

This dismantling of the meritocracy, I’m learning, starts much earlier than medical and law school admissions, at any rate in Fairfax County, Virginia. That’s the location of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, “TJ” for short, a selective school currently ranked Number One in U.S. News & World Report’s list of “Best U.S. High Schools.”

Of course a student has to know he’s won this award in time to include the fact in his college application. It’s turned out that TJ administrators—the Principal, Ann Bonitatibus [Email her] and the Director of Student Services, Brandon Kosatka[Email him]—have for five years been withholding notification to the students until after their college applications have been filed.

Area Principals Admit to Withholding National Merit Awards From Students

8th January 2023

Read it.

National coverage of the TJ story got the attention of Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears and Governor Glenn Youngkin. Youngkin sent a letter on Jan. 3 to Miyares asking him to conduct an investigation into the issue. The next day, on Jan. 4, the attorney general held a press conference at the Korean Community Center in Annandale, announcing he had opened two civil rights investigations, one into the withheld National Merit awards notifications and another into admissions changes to the school. With about 70 percent of students at TJHSST Asian American, Miyares raised the specter of anti-Asian discrimination in both policies.

Apparently merit is ‘waysist’.

Krispy Kreme Donuts to Be Filled, Frosted, and Packaged by Machines

8th January 2023

Read it.

Thank you, minimum wage laws.

Thank you, Union label.

Quite frankly, I thought that they already were–every KrispyKreme donut I’ve ever seen looks as it if has been injection-molded out of plastic. They might taste that way, too, for all I know; I don’t eat them, not being able to get past their looks.

Death by Vegetable Oil: What the Studies Say

8th January 2023

Read it.

“Vegetable oils” in this context refer to oils extracted from seeds, grains, and legumes, and include soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, canola oil, peanut oil, rice bran oil, grape seed oil, and cottonseed oil.

You will note the one ‘vegetable oil’ not mentioned: Olive oil.

Vegetable oils, while nearly nonexistent a hundred years ago, now account for 20% of Americans’ calories and have made their way into nearly every packaged food and restaurant meal we eat, from oat milk, tortilla chips, margarine, and mayonnaise to Subway’s breads, Domino’s pizza crust, and Chipotle’s rice

So: Don’t eat any of these, and you’re good.

Consuming vegetable oil increases your risk of death more than physical inactivity and heavy drinking, and for all the attention that red meat and sodium get, eating vegetable oil is 12 to 20 times more deadly.

Moral: Eat meat. Not too much. Mostly cow.

NOTE: This article demonstrates the rotten core of modern medicine–all of these studies are statistical correlations that are then assumed to indicate actual medical causation. One of the most basic principles of modern science (actual science, not what Dr Fauci peddles) is that CORRELATION DOES NOT IMPLY CAUSATION. Now, certainly there is no causation without correlation; but the opposite is not true. Any study that depends on statistical correlations IS NOT SCIENCE. It is opinion, nothing more, nothing less. Unless a doctor can describe to you the actually physical, chemical process whereby Y results from X, it is just an opinion; it is NOT SCIENCE. Actual science works every time–not 67% of the time , not 85% of the time, not 98% of the time–it works 100% of the time. That’s what makes it SCIENCE. Just because numbers are involved (and statistics can provide you with some very persuasive numbers) doesn’t make it science. You have to be able to follow the actual physical process, and that process has to lead to the same result every time it’s tried.

Don’t get fooled by ‘studies’. Insist on Actual Science.

Quotation of the Day

8th January 2023

“What I expect is over the next year the party will systematically claw back all of these concessions. They will make a deal with the Democrats to first get rid of the rule regarding how many votes are required to remove the Speaker. Once that is passed, they will then fink on the rest of the concessions in short order. Then the twenty holdouts will be stripped of their committee assignments and given a primary opponent financed by the party. ”  — ZMan

Print this out and post it somewhere, so you can watch it happen in real time over the next two years.

Withings’ Toilet Sensor Scans Your Pee to Measure Your Health

8th January 2023

Read it.

Anyone who’s ever offered up a urine sample at a doctor’s office knows that urine can tell us important things about our health: if we’re dehydrated, if we’re pregnant, if we have an infection and even the health of some of our organs. Withings is homing in on some of these biomarkers with two different versions of its consumer device, available in Europe in the first half of 2023, with plans for US availability following clearance by the US Food and Drug Administration.
