My trauma research team quickly trained health professionals to evaluate and, if needed, treat the women. We monitored them through their pregnancies and beyond. When the babies were born, they were smaller than usual—the first sign that the trauma of the World Trade Center attack had reached the womb. Nine months later we examined 38 women and their infants when they came in for a wellness visit. Psychological evaluations revealed that many of the mothers had developed PTSD. And those with PTSD had unusually low levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol, a feature that researchers were coming to associate with the disorder.
Surprisingly and disturbingly, the saliva of the nine-month-old babies of the women with PTSD also showed low cortisol. The effect was most prominent in babies whose mothers had been in their third trimester on that fateful day. Just a year earlier a team I led had reported low cortisol levels in adult children of Holocaust survivors, but we’d assumed that it had something to do with being raised by parents who were suffering from the long-term emotional consequences of severe trauma. Now it looked like trauma leaves a trace in offspring even before they are born.
When I was young, a common schoolyard threat was ‘I’m going to beat you so bad your grandchildren will have bruises’. So maybe that actually might happen.

On CNN’s Reliable Sources on June 19, host Brian Stelter touted the growing new trend in the “objective” media of creating a “democracy beat,” because Donald Trump and his devotees are a constant threat. Stelter compared it to a contractor fighting rot and mold in the house.
There’s something obvious and desirable about journalists focusing intently on elections and voter rights and election integrity battles. But there’s always this gelatinous layer of pomposity on top: that the media need to take sides and not allow “two sides” on democracy.
In the Narrative Media, ‘democracy’ typically means ‘Democrat vote fraud’.

The Antiplanner jerks back the curtain.
A recent survey found that 93 percent of planning students oppose highway expansion because they believe that it won’t relieve congestion due to induced demand. However, the survey found, only 24 percent of the general public agrees. Similarly, 83 percent of planning students believe the government should try to reduce the amount of driving Americans do, but only 31 percent of the general public agrees.
It never occurs to planners that results like these might indicate that they are wrong. After all, they are the experts and the general public is not, so the public should let them do what they want.
…
Most infuriating is the whole induced-demand argument, which (according to Governing magazine) has planners actively wondering why they can’t sell this idea to the public. The answer, of course, is that it is stupid. Economically it is stupid because there is no conceivable product that will generate more demand simply by making more of it: building a road in a desert will not induce more driving. Politically it is stupid because it argues that more roads generate more economic activity, and most urban politicians say they want more economic activity in their cities.

When you point out these recurrent patterns, many respond that The Science teaches us that Zoey Tur always felt like a girl on the inside; and all the evidence to the contrary must have been just her elaborate, seamless lifelong hoax mounted from earliest girlhood to cover up her innate femininity by acting 24/7 for 40-plus years like a giant macho prick. After all, they reason, you couldn’t possibly doubt the word of a woman who claims to have deceived the whole world for decades, could you?
Yet few on either the left or the right have noticed this pattern that many of the most influential men to declare themselves women have virtually no feminine traits whatsoever.

The revolving door between Wall Street and financial regulatory agencies remains an ever-present problem. Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump both used executive fiats to raise or maintain import tariffs on items like solar panels and goods from China. The Jones Act, in place since 1920, continues to protect American shipping interests. Ethanol subsidies support the American corn industry but hurt the poor in developing countries. Even as the internet has started to democratize the public-comment process?—?which is the primary way the public can engage with proposed rules?—?it remains dominated by special-interest groups. As debates have grown ever more technical and arcane, the average man on the street has little chance of influencing regulatory policy.

“I thank God for this place.” It might seem a weird thing to say, unapologetically earnest and deeply uncool, but, in Florida, it’s very common to overhear someone saying exactly this. On the beach. By a pool. In a restaurant. At the checkout line at Publix.
Some other phrases you hear a lot: “I wish we had made the move sooner.” “I feel like I’ve added years to my life.” “Living the dream.” “Another day in paradise.”
It is a unique moment in Florida’s history. The feeling of gratitude is very real. Millions of people seem to have woken up one day and decided they had to become Floridians right away. I am among them.
…
Florida has internalized the lesson of Texas. You can’t build something worthwhile and then surrender it to people who, although they are escaping a place that has begun to collapse, show no evidence of understanding why that collapse is happening. People move for all kinds of reasons, like weather or taxes. Not all of them realize the role they, and their votes, may have played in creating the chaos in their rearview mirrors. So far, the influx of people to Florida is indeed “voting right.” For the first time ever, registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats in Florida, by over 100,000.

In Minnesota, a new rule relating to certification of teachers is in process. As I understand it, the rule has proceeded without legislative action and ultimately will come before an administrative law judge who will (I assume) approve it, absent enormous public outcry. The rule provides that you can’t be licensed as a teacher in Minnesota unless you subscribe to neo-Marxist theories of race, gender and so on.
You have to read it to believe it.

But one reason why voters are furious is rarely expressed. Americans feel that ordinary citizens like themselves who follow the rules are treated more harshly by their own government than are both non-citizens and our own progressive elites. And they are right, and they are angry, and we will hear from them very soon.”

Cockburn spent his long weekend the same way most Americans did: reading the Functional Government Initiative’s recent report. It found that “on any given day from March-December 2020, between 20-30 percent of HHS employees did not appear to be working.”
Government inefficiency is nothing new, but in this case teleworking is exacerbating the problem. And that isn’t about to improve — at least not under this administration. Biden continues to push for more teleworking options, even as the pandemic finally begins to fade.
Considering what government employees do when they are actually doing something, I suspect that this is a feature, rather than a bug.

ZMan lays out some inconvenient truth.
For the longest time, the debate over immigration has been about how both sides can agree on open borders while appearing to disagree. The Left made the spurious claim that America was the result of immigration. If immigration declines, then the country will decline. The Right made the claim that immigrants were natural conservatives and the only way for the Right to compete in the future was to load up on those super-duper conservative immigrants via open borders.
Outside of this immigration two-step, race realist would point out that immigrants tend to support the government party for practical reasons. In the West, the government party is always a few clicks to the left of the people and several giant leaps to the left of its heritage population. In America it means seventy percent of immigrants will vote for the Democrats, regardless of their policies. The cultural inclinations of the immigrants will have no impact on their political activity.

Minneapolis has fallen into a deep, deep hole with an undermanned and demoralized police department, an empowered criminal class, and an ineffectual judicial system. Over the past two years, the Minneapolis Police Department has lost almost 300 officers. Any sentient fool can see why, although the local press does not pass that test. Kyle’s story quotes Sergeant Andrew Schroeder, the officer with whom he rode. “There’s days where north Minneapolis [high crime precinct] has four cops,” he said, explaining how this “staffing crisis” has caused specialized units to be cut.
There is nothing like reading about the experiences of people who do ‘ride-alongs’ with police to appreciate the sort of total scum that they have to deal with on a daily basis.

I had to fly to Boston this weekend to help my sister fix up her new house. I almost didn’t make it back to work on Monday, because my flight was canceled at the last minute, and I had to buy another ticket on another airline, which was canceled, and so on. I made it home eventually, and was less than amused to hear Pete Buttigieg’s statement about the rash of flight cancellations. He said that if the airlines couldn’t fix this problem quickly, then government would be forced to step in.
Ok, so let’s see here. So the government said that a pilot would not be allowed to work unless he had the COVID vaccine. Many pilots chose not to do so, and were fired. Which was fine, as long as nobody was traveling. But once people started to travel again, the airlines couldn’t handle the passenger load because they had fewer pilots available. Because they had fired them last year. Because the government told them to. And now, the government blames the airlines.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that American heat pump manufacturer Lennox International became the first partner in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump Technology Challenge to develop a next-generation electric heat pump that can more effectively heat homes in northern climates relative to today’s models. Cold climate heat pumps (CCHPs) can provide high-efficiency heating in freezing temperatures without producing greenhouse gas emissions and can save families as much as $500 a year on their utility bills. This achievement is a massive step toward providing reliable clean heating and cooling for millions of American families through domestically produced CCHPS, which is crucial to reducing energy costs and achieving President Biden’s goal of a net-zero carbon economy by 2050.

America is suffering from a worker shortage, but a more persistent and perhaps even urgent problem is the profound lack of skills among younger Americans. American elite universities may still be still regarded as the world’s best, but for most young people, the educational system—from grade school to graduate school—is something of a failure, a critical engine of persistent inequality and diminished competition on the international stage.
This crisis in competence predates the pandemic. So does the very related labor shortage. The percentage of firms reporting shortages of labor more than doubled between 2015 and 2020, to 70 percent. Low birthrates among millennials has created what the forecasting firm EMSI describes as a “demographic drought,” as U.S. population growth between 16 and 64 has dropped from 20 percent in the eighties to less than 5 percent last decade. By 2028, Korn Ferry projects there will be a deficit of at least six million workers.
But the bigger problem is not just numbers; consider that our competitors, notably China, face even more challenging demographics. The big issue is the lack of skills throughout the workforce. From grade to graduate schools, our education is deteriorating.
It used to be that this country was composed mainly of Doers, with a thin layer of Talkers on top.
‘Liberal Arts’ colleges are geared toward producing more and more Talkers; as a result, there is a glut of Talkers and not enough Doers.
Our education system, with its hyper-focus on four-year colleges, has failed its students. This about one staggering statistic: Over the past 20 years, we have created twice as many bachelor’s degrees as jobs to employ those who have earned them. Over 40 percent of recent graduates are underemployed, meaning that they’re working in jobs that don’t require their degree. Many graduate programs produce fancy degrees that never return the investment for an estimated 40 percent of master’s students, particularly those earning degrees outside the sciences, business, medicine and education

Now we know why the Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics lost to Golden State in the NBA Finals! Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum simply isn’t black enough, according to former pro Nick “Swaggy” Young.
Tatum averaged 21.5 points per game in the six-game series won by the Warriors, four games to two. However, he shot a pitiful 31.5 percent from the field and made a boatload of turnovers. He set a dubious NBA record with 100 turnovers during the playoffs, too.
Golden State’s Andrew Wiggins held Tatum to just 13 points in the sixth and final game Thursday.
Tatum was “a shell of himself against the Golden State Warriors, completely vanishing when his team needed him the most,” wrote Orlando Silva of the Fadeaway World blog.
Young, who was a mediocre journeyman who played for six NBA teams in his career, got on his high horse to tweet that Tatum just isn’t black enough.

Nothing so illustrates the mindset of green politics, particularly in California, as the word “natural,” which is taken to mean unspoiled, pure, and better than the workings of man. Yet few places are as fundamentally artificial, if measured by its dependency on human intervention, as California.
So why do California’s progressives, and so many others, yearn for what the historian Leo Marx dubbed the “pastoral ideal”?Much has to do with the state’s rapid population growth from 1.5 million in 1900 to nearly 40 million today, which resulted in a regime of environmental rapine that many still living experienced.

Lord Black of Crossharbour discovers that Peggy Noonan lives in the Swamp, quite comfortably.
Peggy Noonan and I have recently confirmed that our political disagreements absolutely will not stand in the way of our long friendship. This is timely, as in her latest pronouncement upon the ever-shifting and more desperate perspective of civilized Trump-hate (defined here as making some effort at analysis, no matter how nonsensical, and not just primal scream therapy like most Trump-haters) in the Wall Street Journal on June 16, she presented the most delusional version of the Trump-cancellation argument that has yet been made by any otherwise serious person still capable of rational comment on the subject.
The five thin and vibrating tent poles holding up the porous canvas of Trump-denial now, according to Noonan, are: 2020 was a pristine election incapable of serious doubt; Trump was trying to overturn the election result by intimidation on Jan. 6; there’s no merit in the Trumpism without Trump argument—his administration was a complete failure in every policy area; his scores of millions of supporters don’t really support him and they’re deserting him; and all those who turned themselves inside-out and in some cases violated election and vote-counting statutes to bring Trump down have no responsibility whatsoever for the almost indescribable catastrophe of the present administration. The proportions of this failure need not be considered. Both parties will just take lots of emetics, allowing nature to take its course, and move on as if the Trump-Biden years never happened.
