Federal Jury: City Must Pay $59,657 After SWAT Team Wrecks Innocent Woman’s House

After a SWAT team wrecked an innocent woman’s house, the city of McKinney, Texas essentially told her “tough luck” and refused to compensate her. In a case that could have nationwide property rights implications, a federal jury on Wednesday awarded her $59,656.59 in damages—and more may be coming.

The jury award follows an April 29 ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Amos Mazzant III that the city’s “intentional and foreseeable” destruction of Vicki Baker’s house constituted a government “taking” that compelled the city to pay just compensation.

Immigration Breaking Point?

With Democratic control of the White House and Congress for most of the last 14 years, I am surprised that there has not been more of an overt push to legalize the 12 million illegal aliens. A conservative Supreme Court majority remains our most important first line of defense against what I have long expected—some federal judge concocting a ruling that it is imperative that illegals be given full citizenship.

Many assumed we were headed that way as a result of the 1975 decision in Plyer v. Doe (5-4 majority opinion by Brennan) holding that Texas had to admit children of illegals to public schools under the Fourteenth Amendment because equal access applies to “people” not “citizens.” Because the feds were clearly not enforcing the immigration laws, the court decided to make policy concerning children in the country illegally through no fault of their own. The justices openly opined that if we are not going to kick them out, there is no benefit in keeping them uneducated (even if it is patently unfair to dump the additional cost of federal failures on a state budget).

From that decision, we soon got the universal policy of not being allowed to ask about citizenship status by any federal, state, or local government agency. A foreigner can crash the border and thus say “screw you” to American law and policy and immediately demand and receive social welfare benefits for an indefinite period of time.

North Carolina Republicans Can Defend Voter ID Law, Supreme Court Rules

North Carolina lawmakers have the power to protect the state’s voter identification requirement, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.

The 8-1 decision allows two Republican state legislators to defend in court a law that requires in-person and absentee voters to present at least 1 of 10 different options of photo ID. Lower courts said that only North Carolina’s Democratic attorney general could defend the law. The NAACP challenged the law, Senate Bill 824, in court, saying it burdens minority voters, though 69 percent of black Americans support voter ID requirements.

The idea of a Democrat official ‘defending’ a voter identification requirement law is Straight Outa Comedy Central.

This Washington Dem Blasted Federal Gas Tax Holidays—Until She Was Up for Reelection

During a non-election year, Washington Democratic senator Patty Murray called a federal gas tax holiday a “bad idea” that may not lower prices at the pump. Now that she’s up for reelection, she’s on board with the plan.

Murray—who is expected to face Republican triage nurse Tiffany Smiley in November—quietly signed on to Senate Democrats’ gas tax suspension bill in late April, more than two months after it was introduced. But in 2008, when Murray was not embroiled in a reelection fight, the Democrat called the policy a “bad idea” that would “deteriorate highway funding.”

Amazing how that works.

Arguments for a Potato Only Diet

In French, the word for potato is pomme de terre. This literally translates to apple of the earth. By this logic, potatoes are the lowest-hanging fruit of all.

More seriously: We keep getting more and more interested in the all-potato diet. This is a diet where you eat nothing but potatoes (and sometimes a bit of seasoning) for a few weeks to a few months. It sounds like a dumb gimmick that could never work, but there are a surprising number of people out there saying that they tried it, it worked for them, and they kept the weight off for months or even years after.

Two million (dead) Irishmen can’t be wrong. (Just kidding….)

New Details in Uvalde School Shooting Show How Far We Still Need to Go

We now know that the door to a fourth grade classroom invaded by the shooter wasn’t barricaded and may not even have been locked. Instead of two underequipped and wounded officers facing a huge obstacle, it was four officers with a ballistic shield, at least two of them armed with rifles, standing outside an unlocked classroom door.

One teacher with a gun and proper training is all it would have taken. This is Texas; that ought to have been a no-brainer.

If Garland, Local Prosecutor Won’t Protect Justices, Virginia Governor and State AG Must Act

With U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Fairfax County, Virginia, Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano refusing to enforce federal and state laws against the pro-abortion protesters who are intimidating and threatening Supreme Court justices and their families who live in Virginia, it’s time for Gov. Glenn Youngkin and state Attorney General Jason Miyares to step in and use their statutory power to arrest, prosecute, and seek the maximum penalty for every day the protesters are violating the law.

The lack of action by Garland and Descano is encouraging the “summer of rage,” leading not only to the arrest of an individual who wanted to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh, but also attacks on pro-life charities and pregnancy resource centers.

The law on such misbehavior at the homes of justices is quite clear. Under 18 U.S.C. § 1507, it is a criminal violation of federal law to picket or parade “near a building or residence occupied or used by [a federal] judge, juror, witness, or court officer” with the “intent of interfering with, obstructing, or impeding the administration of justice, or with the intent of influencing any judge, juror, witness, or court officer, in the discharge of his duty.”

Don’t hold your breath. All the laws in the world are of no value if those supposedly enforcing those laws sit on their hands — as black people living in the South appreciate more than most.

The Obvious Answer to Dana Milbank’s Question

Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank asked that simple question last week after the normally publicity-mad Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) told him it had nothing to say about a BDS chapter’s promotion of a “mapping project” condemned as antisemitic and a possible incitement to violence.

BDS is the campaign to isolate Israel through economic, academic, and social boycotts. The interactive map posted online earlier this month showed the world addresses for dozens of Jewish organizations and others who support Israel’s existence.

The goal, the webpage says, is “to reveal the local entities and networks that enact devastation, so we can dismantle them. Every entity has an address, every network can be disrupted.”

Totaled Tesla Goes Up in Flames Three Weeks After Crash

A totaled Tesla Model S burst into flames in a Sacramento junkyard earlier this month, causing a fire that took “a significant amount of time, water, and thinking outside the box to extinguish,” firefighters said.

The vehicle was involved in a comparably unexplosive accident that sent it to the junkyard three weeks ago – it’s unclear what caused the Tesla to explode nearly a month after being taken off the road. Like other electric vehicle fires, it was very difficult to extinguish.

‘Public Servants’ or Public Masters: Whom Does Your Local School Board Serve?

Most people don’t pay attention to school board elections, but the teachers and administrators do. Employees of the school system constitute an organized special interest, who can usually succeed in electing their chosen slate of board members — and, perhaps more importantly, they can prevent the election of any school board candidate who might disrupt the system. Thus, by controlling the school board, teachers and administrators can evade any effort to make them accountable to the public. Any parent who has ever complained about the policies and curricula of public schools knows how this works. In fact, it is largely erroneous to call them “public schools,” since they do not really belong to the public, but are rather controlled by the administrative bureaucracy, operating for the benefit of the employees, without regard to what parents actually want.

Iran Descends into Outright Piracy and Confrontation With the West

Iran’s defiance of the norms of international law and its subversion of the West continues with no relenting in its intensity and scope. Now, Iran once again sparks tension in the Persian Gulf by embarking on state-sponsored piracy, while its enrichment of uranium has reached the dangerous weapons-level grade.

On May 27, the notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in cooperation with the Iranian Navy, launched a helicopter raid to seize two Greek oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. The “Prudent Warrior” and “Delta Poseidon” were sailing in international waters, 22 nautical miles off the coast of Iran. The Greek Foreign Ministry condemned Iran’s actions as “tantamount to acts of piracy.”

This incident happened just days after Athens announced that it would abide by U.S. sanctions on Russia by handing over a reported 700,000 barrels of Iranian crude oil from the Russian-flagged tanker “Lana.” The ship is owned by Russia’s Promsvyazbank, a bank critical to Russia’s defense sector. The U.S. Treasury designated the bank on Feb. 22 – just two days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine – “for operating or having operated in the defense and related materiel and financial services sectors of the Russian Federation economy.”

US Oil And Gas Exports Are Fueling Higher Domestic Prices

The U.S. oil and natural gas industry long fought for and in the last decade finally won release from federal restrictions that limited exports. The ostensible reason was that because of the so-called “shale revolution” in the country’s oil and gas fields, the United States would have plenty of oil and gas to spare for export.

The real reason behind the push was that the oil and gas industry wanted what almost every other industry in America already had: The right to sell their products to the highest bidders no matter where they lived on the globe.

This made it almost certain that as U.S. prices rose to match world prices, U.S. consumers would feel the pain. And, since energy prices affect everyone who votes, they are always politically consequential.

National ICE Council Demands Separation From Parent Union AFL-CIO Due to ‘Defund ICE’ Stances & Prejudice

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has had enough of leftist unions’ mission to take down their agency, as they are now filing charges with the U.S. Department of Labor to break away from their parent union, the AFL-CIO, and the affiliated American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).

The National ICE Council is also asking for a full financial audit of the two parent unions and protection from any attacks from the AFL-CIO and AFGE if and when they leave. If lefty unions are good at one thing, it’s keeping their tyrannical grasp over decent people and punishing those who don’t preach the woke gospel.

Warplanes: When The Truth Is Toxic

U.S. Air Force leadership are now accused of serious misbehavior (criminally deceiving Congress) by deliberately lying to Congress about their plans for the A-10 ground attack aircraft. The recent leaks include briefings describing how air force leaders planned to continue undermining the A-10 but deliberately sabotaging promised upgrades and sustainment (money for maintenance and operations of A-10s). The leaked documents included mention of the importance of keeping all of this from going public. That’s where the air force crossed the line into criminal conduct.

It is no secret that the air force has spent several decades trying to get rid of the A-10, its most popular, affordable, and effective combat aircraft. Since 2019, the air force appears to have decided to stop trying to get rid of its popular, at least with pilots and infantry, A-10 attack aircraft. Nicknamed “Warthog” or just “hog”, the A-10 never got much respect from air force leaders. The A-10 did gain enough popular and political clout to keep this aircraft flying. The current (2020) plan reduces the A-10 force by 44 aircraft, to 237. These will equip seven squadrons. Three are active duty and four operated by part-time National Guard and reserve personnel. The reserve units would be available within 30 days for deployment to a combat zone. The reserve pilots are largely retired fighter pilots and tend to have more experience in the A-10 than the younger active-duty pilots. The reservists fly regularly and their aircraft are kept in shape for regular operations.

Federal Court’s School Dress Code Ruling Skirts Larger Issues

A U.S. Court of Appeals recently ruled that North Carolina charter day schools cannot have dress codes based on a child’s gender because, as a “state actor,” such codes violate laws on equal protection. Under the ruling, girls can no longer be required to wear dresses.

Some parents have believed charter schools are an alternative to public schools that impose woke ideology. If this court ruling stands, notes a New York Post editorial, ” … it could mean, in effect, the end of charters as they exist. It provides a legal rationale for them to be brought under the thumb of the state and city educrats nationwide, who are eager to handcuff charters for daring to bring educational options to students failed by traditional public schools.”

By now most people are aware of the awful persecution faced by minority Christian communities across the world. For Christians living in countries that are hostile to their faith, there is a high and growing likelihood of becoming homeless or destitute.

According to a new Open Doors report, “The Church on the Run: IDP and Refugee Report 2022”, Christian minorities are being deliberately driven from their homes and communities to erase the presence of Christianity from their regions.

Christians are more likely to be forced out of their homes or countries, and more likely to experience psychological and physical violence once displaced on account of their religious identity and activity.

Astonishingly, the biggest perpetrators of this are the victim’s family.

Covid cases are rising again. In the UK, they have broken through the 200,000 infections-a-day threshold for the first time since April. In America, the sixth wave is well under way. In countries that kept the disease at bay for years, such as Taiwan and New Zealand, numbers are shooting up, driven by milder but highly infectious versions of the Omicron variant. The virus has not gone away, even if its death toll is much lower. But what has disappeared is any real or urgent interest from the media and the scientific establishment in finding out how it started.

How Parents’ Trauma Leaves Biological Traces in Children

My trauma research team quickly trained health professionals to evaluate and, if needed, treat the women. We monitored them through their pregnancies and beyond. When the babies were born, they were smaller than usual—the first sign that the trauma of the World Trade Center attack had reached the womb. Nine months later we examined 38 women and their infants when they came in for a wellness visit. Psychological evaluations revealed that many of the mothers had developed PTSD. And those with PTSD had unusually low levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol, a feature that researchers were coming to associate with the disorder.

Surprisingly and disturbingly, the saliva of the nine-month-old babies of the women with PTSD also showed low cortisol. The effect was most prominent in babies whose mothers had been in their third trimester on that fateful day. Just a year earlier a team I led had reported low cortisol levels in adult children of Holocaust survivors, but we’d assumed that it had something to do with being raised by parents who were suffering from the long-term emotional consequences of severe trauma. Now it looked like trauma leaves a trace in offspring even before they are born.

When I was young, a common schoolyard threat was ‘I’m going to beat you so bad your grandchildren will have bruises’. So maybe that actually might happen.

Beware Arrogance on the ‘Democracy Beat’

On CNN’s Reliable Sources on June 19, host Brian Stelter touted the growing new trend in the “objective” media of creating a “democracy beat,” because Donald Trump and his devotees are a constant threat. Stelter compared it to a contractor fighting rot and mold in the house.

There’s something obvious and desirable about journalists focusing intently on elections and voter rights and election integrity battles. But there’s always this gelatinous layer of pomposity on top: that the media need to take sides and not allow “two sides” on democracy.

In the Narrative Media, ‘democracy’ typically means ‘Democrat vote fraud’.

Most Americans Don’t Believe Planners

The Antiplanner jerks back the curtain.

A recent survey found that 93 percent of planning students oppose highway expansion because they believe that it won’t relieve congestion due to induced demand. However, the survey found, only 24 percent of the general public agrees. Similarly, 83 percent of planning students believe the government should try to reduce the amount of driving Americans do, but only 31 percent of the general public agrees.

It never occurs to planners that results like these might indicate that they are wrong. After all, they are the experts and the general public is not, so the public should let them do what they want.

Most infuriating is the whole induced-demand argument, which (according to Governing magazine) has planners actively wondering why they can’t sell this idea to the public. The answer, of course, is that it is stupid. Economically it is stupid because there is no conceivable product that will generate more demand simply by making more of it: building a road in a desert will not induce more driving. Politically it is stupid because it argues that more roads generate more economic activity, and most urban politicians say they want more economic activity in their cities.

After all, they reason, you couldn’t possibly doubt the word of a woman who claims to have deceived the whole world for decades, could you?

Yet few on either the left or the right have noticed this pattern that many of the most influential men to declare themselves women have virtually no feminine traits whatsoever.

The revolving door between Wall Street and financial regulatory agencies remains an ever-present problem. Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump both used executive fiats to raise or maintain import tariffs on items like solar panels and goods from China. The Jones Act, in place since 1920, continues to protect American shipping interests. Ethanol subsidies support the American corn industry but hurt the poor in developing countries. Even as the internet has started to democratize the public-comment process?—?which is the primary way the public can engage with proposed rules?—?it remains dominated by special-interest groups. As debates have grown ever more technical and arcane, the average man on the street has little chance of influencing regulatory policy.

In Minnesota, a new rule relating to certification of teachers is in process. As I understand it, the rule has proceeded without legislative action and ultimately will come before an administrative law judge who will (I assume) approve it, absent enormous public outcry. The rule provides that you can’t be licensed as a teacher in Minnesota unless you subscribe to neo-Marxist theories of race, gender and so on.
