The Texans’ Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), and Australians are constantly being blown away with the growing “nameplate” capacity of wind turbines and solar panels to provide electricity, but electricity from renewables have yet to produce anywhere near their projected capacity due to the intermittency and unreliability of breezes and sunshine.
I have always thought that ERCOT was something one got from moldy bread.

The $35 Chipolo Card Spot sounds like a great solution to fears of lost or stolen wallets, but there are some caveats. Although it’s the size of a credit card, it’s as thick as three cards. It doesn’t support Ultra Wideband precision finding that enables the Find My app to points you in the right direction with an exact distance. Also—most disappointingly—the battery isn’t replaceable and has an estimated life of only 2 years. Chipolo offers a 50%-off replacement discount and recycles the dead unit, but that’s still annoying and wasteful. Currently, the Chipolo Card Spot is sold out and not shipping until May.

More than 80 years ago, the Hindenburg Zeppelin LZ 129 exploded and crashed as it approached landing at Lakehurst New Jersey on May 6, 1937.
The behemoth 250-meter long vessel rigid airship had been in service for just under a year. At the time, numerous such vessels had been produced and employed with relative commercial success between the 1900s and the late 1930s. But the dramatic, fiery explosion of the Hindenburg spelled the end of dirigibles as a mode of transport.
The problem with the Hindenburg was a design flaw that is known and can be avoided. Nevertheless, popular mythology has panicked the public about hydrogen dirigibles ever since. This might not prove a problem with cargo craft.
According to the company’s promotional video, the new vessel uses “green hydrogen” for propulsion and with it the company hopes to transform air freight and shipping worldwide.
Using liquid hydrogen and fuel cell technology, the H2 Clipper is claimed to “operate efficiently at service ranges from under 500 to well over 6,000 miles” and travel at 175 mph. It would be able to “deliver goods directly from a factory in China to a distribution center in the U.S. in less than 36 hours.”

Epic Games announced on Monday a new app called “RealityScan,” which will let anyone use the iPhone camera to scan objects and turn them into high-fidelity 3D models. The app was developed using technologies from Capturing Reality, a company specializing in photogrammetry that was acquired by Epic in 2021.
As the company explained, capturing real-world assets can be tricky since this usually requires advanced equipment. However, more creators and hobbyists are embracing 3D photogrammetry, and for these people RealityScan makes the whole process much easier.
We have the technology.

“It is the first domestic commercial unit with zero direct and indirect emissions. Currently, there are already units that use the same technology as ours, which is aerothermal energy, but they do not use a natural fluid such as propane in it. For this reason, our pump can heat homes being totally respectful with the environment, without emitting carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Furthermore, its high energy efficiency allows it to be classified as renewable energy, by pumping energy from the environment,” underlines José Gonzálvez, Director of the Thermal area at the University Institute for Research in Energy Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de València.
Among its advantages, the heat pump developed by the UPV and Saunier Duval can also generate hot water for heating at temperatures of up to 75ºC with very high energy efficiency, something that is not possible with conventional heat pumps. Additionally, it can be installed not only in newly built buildings, but also to replace gas boilers in existing buildings. And it also allows the application of anti-legionella treatment without requiring external support.

Promising new research has raised the possibility of treating type 2 diabetes without drugs. Across three different animal models researchers have demonstrated how short bursts of ultrasound targeted at specific clusters of nerves in the liver can effectively lower insulin and glucose levels.
Reporting in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering, a team led by GE Research, including investigators from the Yale School of Medicine, UCLA, and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, demonstrated a unique non-invasive ultrasound method designed to stimulate specific sensory nerves in the liver. The technology is called peripheral focused ultrasound stimulation (pFUS) and it allows highly targeted ultrasound pulses to be directed at specific tissue containing nerve endings.

The fiancée of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi vowed to fight a Turkish court’s decision Thursday to move the trial of 26 Saudi suspects in the gruesome 2018 killing to Saudi Arabia, a ruling that human rights groups fear will spell an end to the case. Hatice Cengiz, who has been relentlessly ampaigning for justice in the years since Khashoggi’s murder, said Thursday that her fight “is not over.”
As The Washington Post reported, the decision Thursday marked “a stunning reversal by Turkey, which in the years after the killing of Khashoggi… went to extraordinary lengths to publicize the Saudi government’s role in the plot.” The report said: “More recently, though, [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan’s government has tried to improve ties with the kingdom as Turkey weathers one of its worst economic crises in decades,” the Post noted.

ESI Energy, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, was sentenced in federal court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to three criminal counts of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The company will serve five years probation and was ordered to pay more than $8 million in fines and restitution for its role in the deaths of at least 150 eagles that were slashed to pieces by its wind turbines.

What’s being widely reported as a terrorist attack targeted a bar on Dizengoff Street, which is typically on the weekends a crowded nightlife area. “As the street filled with ambulances and rescuers, police carried out searches for a gunman thought to have escaped, going door to door and telling people to stay inside and lock their doors,” The Times of Israel reports.

Late last month, Donald Trump filed suit against the conspirators who conceived and propagated the falsehood that he had colluded with the Russians to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. Like most of Trump’s ventures, the suit is ambitious, even grandiose. Trump is suing, among others, Hillary Clinton, the DNC, Marc Elias, the international law firm Perkins Cole, Christopher Steele, Fusion GPS, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, ABC, and other yet to be named media corporations. He is suing them for, among other things, injurious falsehood, computer fraud, theft of trade secrets, malicious prosecution, and violation of the RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) act.
Most people can’t push back effectively when the Woke Mob comes for them because they can’t afford to pursue their formal legal remedeis. Trump, however, has deep pockets and doesn’t take shit from anybody.

ZMan points out that there is nothing new under the sun.
The video of former president Obama visiting the White House recently made clear that the current president is not really in charge. Joe Biden was seen staggering around the reception looking for anyone to acknowledge him. It was possible he had no idea where he was at the time. Biden’s increasingly deranged public rantings suggest he is reaching his expiry date. The question being quietly debated in Washington is when and how he will be removed from office.
The fact that this question has been normalized since before he was installed in the position speaks to how much things have changed in America. No one really thinks Joe Biden is in charge of himself or the executive branch. It is just assumed that he is a place holder who will be replaced in his first term. Every president represents a coalition of elite interests, but none have been viewed as a figurehead. This is a big change that in time will be seen as an inflection point.
There is plenty of speculation about the when and the how the real decision makers will remove Biden from office. Maybe they have a Lee Harvey Oswald in training, one of those Trump loving white supremacist from their mythologies. That would justify another round of state sponsored terrorism. Maybe they just force him out due to poor health in the hope of making him a sympathetic figure. Of course, who replaces him is another fun question to ponder.

I’ve seen quite a bit of discussion on inflation, as a result of an increased supply of money in the system. Some have suggested that the stimulus checks increased the supply of money which may have, in part, led to inflation. I’m curious, if the government instituted a universal basic income, would this lead to inflation?
PhD in econometrics speaking, here’s my handy guide to macro-economics:
– The main variables of interest are (aggregate) real production / income (GDP/GDI), unemployment and inflation (arguably in that order)
– Nobody knows much wrt the causes, effects and future trajectories of any of these. Not professional Ivy League economists who publish in journals like AER, QJE, JPE or Econometrica, nor traders getting paid millions at hedge funds or prop trading desks, nor fringe bloggers, gold/crypto-bugs or neophytes from different fields (traditionally from physics, but probably increasingly from CS/AI/ML). Especially beware when they sound very sure of themselves, often using correct wonky economic jargon or details like the plumbing of money flows. Top academic economist are at least (usually) somewhat honest that they know very very little.
– Even if someone did know anything, 3rd parties like you or I can’t distinguish the Real Truth from quackery.
– The root cause of this knowledge deficiency is the inability to run proper controlled experiments. Pretty much no theory about macro-economics is convincingly testable/falsifiable, except banal trivialities like we can’t make everybody rich by sending everyone a $10M check. This will not change in our lifetime, if ever.
– All the writing on macro-economics is story-telling and catering to their specific audiences. Academics write foremost for other academics to gain a position at a prestigious faculty (and incidentally to influence politics). Crypto-bugs write to sell you crypto-coins. Fringe bloggers like Shadowstats write to get newsletter signups and ad-dollars. Most of them employ the effective mechanism that the reader is initiated to advanced/semi-hidden knowledge, which makes the reader feel better about themselves.
Given this, the answer to your question is: maybe, maybe not, who knows?
The YCombinator Hacker News site often has more than the tech-related stuff you might expect. Highly recommended.

On March 18th, the New York Times published “America Has a Free Speech Problem,” an editorial wrapped around a poll, asserting roughly 80% of the country withholds opinions over fear of “retaliation or harsh criticism.” The piece prompted outrage from Twitter’s moral police — “arguably the worst day in the history of the New York Times” cried blue-check analyst Tom Watson — some of whom claimed the article did so much to legitimize right-wing propaganda about speech suppression that the entire Times editorial board should resign or be fired.
A day before the Times editorial, the Chronicle of Higher Education published an article by author and longtime professor Laura Kipnis called “Academe is a Hotbed of Craven Snitches.” My first question upon reading this disturbing piece was why the excellent word “craven” isn’t used more by writers. The second, after digesting the content — a litany of horrific scenes of students, administrators, and academics destroying each other’s careers and reputations, often over consensual, legal sexual encounters — is how anyone familiar with even a fraction of what Kipnis writes about could quibble with the notion that America has a “speech problem.”

The media consensus here in the UK is very much that everyone involved in the event is an extremist. Trying to determine that for oneself is rather hard. For one thing, the opinions of the majority of my parent’s generation would now be considered incredibly extreme, as indeed is anyone who upholds even the mildest version of, say, traditional religious ethics and orthodoxy. What is extreme is shifting every year, and you can join the ranks of extremists just by pausing too long on the path of inexorable progress.

As I watch the work of the Biden Administration unfold, I can’t help but wonder if there is an overarching and hidden lesson that we are supposed to learn. Does anyone remember a time when any administration has made so many disastrous decisions in just over one year? It’s as if we are supposed to learn from all these outcomes that the US has failed, and will continue to fail, at every level.

Brook Jackson is a whistleblower who has brought her claims to the attention of the British Medical Journal. She was a Regional Director with Ventavia Research Group, a company that Pfizer contracts to perform clinical trials. She has claimed that the company conducted its phase-three vaccine trials with several deficiencies including falsifying data, unblinding patients, and using untrained vaccinators.
She elevated her concerns to her superiors within the company multiple times, including her concern about the quality control department being overwhelmed with problems. Finding her complaints disregarded by her superiors, she emailed a complaint to the FDA. The wheels of government corruption clearly turn quickly; she was fired before the day was out. Fortunately, she has provided receipts, photographs, documents, emails, even audio recordings of management dismissing her concerns.

First Light Fusion (First Light), the University of Oxford fusion spin-out, today confirms it has achieved fusion. The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has independently validated the result.
This is the first time fusion has been achieved using the unique targets developed by First Light, and the corresponding projectile technology. First Light’s mission is to solve the problem of fusion power with the simplest machine possible. Projectile fusion is a new approach to inertial fusion that is simpler, more energy efficient, and has lower physics risk. First Light has achieved fusion having spent less than £45 million, and with a rate of performance improvement faster than any other fusion scheme in history.
If fusion power becomes commercial, who will the climate change Nazis have to hate on?
