Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said on Saturday it was fraud for GoFundMe to “commandeer” $9 million in donations sent to support protesting truckdrivers in Canada and that he will investigate what he called “deceptive practices” by the website.

GoFundMe took down the so-called Freedom Convoy’s page on Friday, saying it violated its terms of service. It said donors had two weeks to request a refund, then remaining funds would be disbursed to “credible and established charities.”

DeSantis, a Republican, said on Twitter it was fraud for GoFundMe to give the money “to causes of their own choosing,” and he would work with Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to investigate. “(T)hese donors should be given a refund.”

A new study of how criminals vote found that most convicts register Democratic, a key reason in why liberal lawmakers and governors are eager for them to get back into the voting booth after their release.

“Democrats would benefit from additional ex-felon participation,” said the authoritative study in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

The authors, professors from the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University, found that in some states, felons register Democratic by more than six-to-one. In New York, for example, 61.5 percent of convicts are Democrats, just 9 percent Republican. They also cited a study that found 73 percent of convicts who turn out for presidential elections would vote Democrat.

A group of scientists from the Unversity of Washington has found out that mosquitoes are usually flying towards specific colors such as red, orange, black, and cyan, after detecting a telltale gas from our breaths. And the little creatures often ignore colors like green, purple, blue, and white.

These findings may lead us to learn how they find their hosts, as the human skin emits a strong red-orange signal to their eyes.

Jeffrey Riffell, a UW professor of biology and the senior author of the study said, “Mosquitoes appear to use odors to help them distinguish what is nearby, like a host to bite”. When the mosquitoes smell specific compounds, like CO2 from our breath, “that scent stimulates the eyes to scan for specific colors and other visual patterns, which are associated with a potential host, and head to them” Riffell added.

Using a novel polymerization process, MIT chemical engineers have created a new material that is stronger than steel and as light as plastic, and can be easily manufactured in large quantities.

The new material is a two-dimensional polymer that self-assembles into sheets, unlike all other polymers, which form one-dimensional, spaghetti-like chains. Until now, scientists had believed it was impossible to induce polymers to form 2D sheets.

Such a material could be used as a lightweight, durable coating for car parts or cell phones, or as a building material for bridges or other structures, says Michael Strano, the Carbon P. Dubbs Professor of Chemical Engineering at MIT and the senior author of the new study.

I embedded two of the three search warrants executed around the Twin Cities by the FBI on January 20 here (February 1) and here (February 2). The third is at the bottom of this post. If you have followed along so far, please don’t miss this one. It focuses on Aimee Bock, the mastermind of the scheme implicating Feeding Our Future, and lays out the case in vivid detail including photographs of houses bought with taxpayer funds procured from the government in the course of the fraud.

No charges have been brought (sealed or unsealed) and no arrests have been made. Based on the warrants, however, I infer the charges will come. The search warrants establish the existence of assets — “real estate, cars, and other luxury items,” as the search warrant affidavit below states in paragraph 7 — that can be seized and liquidated to mitigate the fraud. The government cannot let it ride. Indeed, the FBI seized certain of Bock’s assets in the course of its January 20 search of her residence. According to her attorney, Bock has been advised that she is a target of the investigation.

The original perovskite, calcium titanium oxide, is a mineral (see picture) discovered in the Ural mountains in 1839 and named after Count Lev Perovski, a Russian mineralogist. Since then, the name has come to be used for a number of materials that share a similar crystal structure.

Much of the interest in perovskites comes because those which combine metal atoms with chlorine, bromine or iodine (members of a group of elements called halogens) are semiconductors. This makes them potentially useful in a variety of electronics. In particular, one promising feature of metal halides is that they can be used to make new types of solar cells which are more efficient at converting sunlight into electricity than the silicon-based cells currently employed. One of the fun parts of studying the ancient world, even for an amateur, is that you see that the problems of the human condition are immutable. The issues we face today have new characteristics, but they are not new to man. The Ancients had the same sorts of problems because they had the same sorts of people. Then as now, there were people who lived to create trouble. There have always been people nibbling at the support cables of society, hoping for disaster.

Of course, the Ancients could not afford to indulge their fantasies about themselves or the world, so their solutions were to the point. An office holder who betrayed his duty to the office was forced to commit suicide. People who committed crimes, even small crimes, faced rough judgment. Much of what ails the modern age is the unwillingness to deal with the problems of society. As a result, they have metastasized to the point where they seem intractable.

Sometimes the old ways are best.

We have heard of cases where adult patients in the US have been denied a life-saving heart transplant because they hadn’t been vaccinated. But have you ever heard of a child being refused because their parents had been vaccinated?

Well, now we have: Politico EU reports that a 3-year-old Cypriot boy was denied a heart transplant by a hospital in Germany allegedly because his parents weren’t “fully vaccinated”.

And it wasn’t just Germany. The boy was turned away by hospitals in the UK and Israel for the same reason. Finally, a Greek hospital was found to do the transplant, but the story is going viral anyway as the latest example of COVID restrictions run amok.

I’ve reported in the past about the unpleasant antics of asylum seekers in the Netherlands on buses and trains. The “youths” tend to become violent when asked to produce a ticket, so the government attempted to solve the problem by setting up a special free bus service reserved exclusively for culture-enrichers. According to the following news report, the youngsters failed to avail themselves of the opportunity, so the bus line was shut down. A Woodside official said the city cannot comply with a new state law that expedites construction of two-unit housing in areas zoned for single family homes because of its mountain lion population.

On January 27, Woodside Planning Director Jackie Young released a memo explaining why the town cannot do its part to ease a chronic housing shortage. Young said no permits for accessory dwelling units (known as SB 9 Projects) would receive building permits so long as the mountain lion is a candidate for the endangered species list in the Central Coast habitat which includes Woodside.

A petition to list the mountain lion as threatened or endangered is under review by the California Fish and Game Commission. According to state law a species listed as a candidate is due the same protection as a species that has been declared threatened.

The scandal enveloping congresswoman Marie Newman—who is accused of signing and then reneging on a contract to pay a political rival not to run against her—has taken a shocking new turn. Federal campaign records show that after striking a secret settlement with the rival, the Illinois Democrat did, in fact, put the man on her campaign payroll.

In October 2018, Newman allegedly signed a contract with Iymen Chehade promising him a cozy six-figure salary on her congressional staff in exchange for his political support, according to the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). When Newman ultimately didn’t hire Chehade after she won her 2020 election, he sued.

Democratic Iowa congresswoman Cindy Axne demanded that the rich pay their “fair share” in taxes just two days after reports broke that her New York colleague Hakeem Jeffries (D.) dodged thousands of dollars in property taxes by taking advantage of a subsidy for which he voted.

My, what a surprise. Aren’t you surprised? I’m sure surprised.

“We have a tax system that’s letting too many people off the hook that should be paying, the wealthiest among us,” Axne said during a campaign event. “It’s not fair that folks in this room, that average everyday Iowans, are paying their fair share for those wealthy folks to use everything that we have, and take advantage of it, and not pay their taxes.”

“The rich need to pay their fair share,” Axne said.

What, exactly, is ‘their fair share’? They ever say. You can’t even get them to talk about it.

How about we demand that Democrats pay their fair share? After all, they’re the ones spending money as if there were no tomorrow.

When Joe Biden still had sufficient mental competency to merely be “Slow Joe” Biden, he and his Senate Democrat cohorts helped torpedo the Supreme Court future of a black woman. Her name is Janice Rogers Brown, no earthly relation to me, and she was finally confirmed from the California Supreme Court to be a United States Circuit Judge for the District of Columbia Circuit. Yet, the bitter two-year delaying action kept her from potential consideration for the Supreme Court, and she retired to an academic life.

I remember President George W. Bush nominating this outstanding jurist, with an eye to potential future Supreme Court consideration. I did not know at the time that there was talk of turning to her, a California Supreme Court justice, when Bush’s attempt to get his Texas crony, Harriet Miers, on the court was crushed by real conservatives. He took the easier route, although not one of his first choosing, of nominating Samuel Alito to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. Brown persisted, not withdrawing her nomination in the face of Biden and his gang’s obstruction.
