Multiple explosions rocked a Palestinian refugee camp in the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre on Friday night, with international reports citing unknown casualties, and several social media videos showing large flames reaching into the night sky.
Though unconfirmed, many reports are saying a Hamas weapons depot ignited, and there’s also rampant speculation it may have possibly been attacked by Israeli airstrikes.

Gangs have had their the run of the Twin Cities at least since the retreat of law enforcement in the wake of the George Floyd riots. Carjackings have sprung up and spread like a virulent cancer. Homicides have reached record levels in both Minneapolis and St. Paul.

ZMan’s weekly podcast. Highly recommended.
The show this week is on a topic that comes up here in different ways from time to time but will become more of a focus in the future. That topic is the intellectual and spiritual underpinnings of the new religion. Our side has the bad habit of judging this stuff by objective standards, which has some minor utility, but is of no use in developing suitable defenses or an alternative moral philosophy.
The first step in that process is the same as in war, which is to reconnoiter the enemy in order to understand his strengths and weaknesses. In the sense of the culture war, that means going into the enemy’s intellectual territory to understand how they think and get a grip on their code. Every subculture has its own language and the new religion is not an exception. They have their own jargon which we have to learn.

The Northern Hemisphere winter is just 12 days away, and some Americans have already packed their bags and headed to the sandy beaches of Cancun to escape cold weather. Vacationers this year have to be on guard amid a spate of shootings that have turned the area into a tropical warzone.
The latest incident occurred Tuesday outside the four-star Oasis Palm resort in Cancun. According to NBC News, a group of gunmen pulled up on jet skis and began shooting in the hotel zone.

Vuity, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in October, would potentially replace reading glasses for some of the 128 million Americans who have trouble seeing close-up. The new medicine takes effect in about 15 minutes, with one drop on each eye providing sharper vision for six to 10 hours, according to the company.

CNN does its job as the DNC press office.
One Republican, Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, voted with all the Democrats for the bill.
One RINO allows fhem to claim it was ‘bipartisan’. The fact that no real Republicans voted for it, even under Fascist Joe Biden, indicates that it doesn’t really address ‘abuses of power’ by a President.
The bill, which has support from the White House, aims to strengthen guardrails that were tested by former President Donald Trump, including limitation on presidential pardons, the requirement for candidates for president and vice president to submit their personal tax returns for 10 years, and the acceptance of any foreign or domestic emoluments.
In other words, it’s an anti-Trump bill, aimed at things he did that the Never Trumpers particularly hated. Hence the virtue-signal name.

A breakthrough study by University of Alberta researchers has shown the fat cells that lie just beneath our skin shrink when exposed to the blue light emitted by the sun.
“When the sun’s blue light wavelengths-the light we can see with our eye-penetrate our skin and reach the fat cells just beneath, lipid droplets reduce in size and are released out of the cell. In other words, our cells don’t store as much fat,” said Peter Light, senior author of the study, who is a professor of pharmacology and the director of the U of A’s Alberta Diabetes Institute.
“If you flip our findings around, the insufficient sunlight exposure we get eight months of the year living in a northern climate may be promoting fat storage and contributing to the typical weight gain some of us have over winter,” added the Dr. Charles A. Allard Chair in Diabetes Research.

One of the examples that I use to show how much we’ve learned about biology (and how much we didn’t know, even in the relatively recent past) is RNA. Who could have predicted that there would turn out to be so many different kinds of the stuff? We all grew up hearing about the basics in school – messenger RNA, transfer RNA, ribosomal RNA if your introductory course got fancy. But short hairpin RNA? Double-stranded RNA? Long noncoding RNA? Circular RNA? MicroRNA? I know that I’m leaving some out, but I’m also sure that there are others that belong on that list that we haven’t even stumbled across yet. Either we don’t know where to look, or how to look (because our existing techniques might not pick them up), or we don’t understand what we’re looking at even if we come across them. And I don’t mean to give the idea that the classes above are all figured out, either. We’re just starting to get the first ideas about what some of these things do in the cell, and how they relate to health and disease. Scientists of 2060 or so will look back on us with some pity, because of all the important things that we just didn’t know yet back in the 2020s.

The Biden administration plans to push the Supreme Court to dismiss a school-voucher case on a technicality, fearing that a ruling that allows state funds to go toward religious uses will throw open public coffers to religious schools.
The Biden Justice Department during oral arguments on Wednesday will press the Court to dismiss the case. The plaintiffs have a leg up heading into the argument because the Court said in decisions from 2017 and 2020 that religious groups can’t be excluded from public benefits because of their religious identity.

This opinion piece in the Washington Post carries the title, “Sotomayor saw she couldn’t sway her colleagues. So she talked to us instead.” The article is by law professor Melissa Murray who clerked for Sotomayor at the appeals court level.
I don’t know whether either proposition in the title is accurate, but I can vouch for the second and third words of the second sentence. Sotomayor talked.
She talked and talked. She talked when counsel for the state of Mississippi tried to answer her questions. Counsel was lucky if he could get ten words out without Sotomayor interrupting him.

ZMan does a review.
Politics in a liberal democracy is first and foremost performative. Getting attention is the first goal for political types and they do that by comporting to familiar roles. How well they play those roles, as in any type of theater, establishes their status in the hierarchy of the political theater. Some actors, of course, take a short cut and play one of the various fools or jesters in the political drama. If done well this is a fast-track to attention, but the role itself is always on the periphery of the main show.
If most people were operating from self-interest and had a reasonable sense of their self-interest, political theater would not exist. For example, why would people line up to vote when they know their votes will be ignored? Most people know this to some degree and the science bears it out, but people still vote. In fact, voter participation has gone up as the effectiveness of voting has declined. The theater of democratic politics blinds people to the futility of it for some reason.

One of the chief scandals of the 2020 election was the manner in which a group of left-wing former intelligence officials, liberal newspapers and television networks, and social media giants conspired to squash information about Joe Biden’s political corruption–information that, later polls suggested, could have cost him the election if voters had been permitted to learn the facts. The true story has now been told in Miranda Devine’s Laptop From Hell, about the treasure trove of documents, photos and videos that conclusively demonstrate not just Hunter Biden’s depravity, but, far more important, Joe Biden’s efforts to extract bribes from the Communist Chinese. As I have said many times, no one has ever bribed Hunter Biden, a pitiful, drug-addled loser who probably would not be employable were his father not an important government official.
During the 2020 campaign, Jen Psaki tried to sell the ridiculous claim that Hunter Biden’s laptop was “Russian disinformation,” while Hunter himself never denied the authenticity of the laptop or the materials it contained. It helps when you control a once free and diverse press.

Democrats have painted themselves into a corner on the number one issue of the day, crime. They tolerated and in many cases glorified the George Floyd riots as legitimate protests against oppression. They sympathized with criminals rather than law enforcement, arguing that America doesn’t have a crime problem, it has a law enforcement problem. They attacked law enforcement at every turn, actively trying to defund the police in some jurisdictions. And Democratic Party legislators and prosecutors effectively legalized theft in some cities and states.
To no sane person’s surprise, both violent and less-violent crime have exploded. Riots, arson, assault, homicide, carjacking, have all skyrocketed. And criminal gangs have taken advantage of the moratorium on law enforcement in a number of cities by organizing the mass looting of stores like Walgreen’s, Best Buy, Nordstrom, Apple, and so on.

Some of California’s largest school districts are dropping D and F grades. Students who don’t learn the material, pass the final exam, or finish homework by the end of the semester would earn an “incomplete” which, I assume, could be converted to at least a “C” later on. Los Angeles Unified, Oakland Unified, Sacramento City Unified, San Diego Unified are among the districts that will make this move.
According this article, which gushes over the decision, the goals are to cause students to “re-engage” in school and to boost their chances of acceptance into the state’s public colleges. It is also designed to “especially” help “Black, Latino and low-income students,” according to the same source. Who would have guessed that?
