ZMan circles back.
Back in 2014, Rolling Stone published a story about an alleged rape on the campus of the University of Virginia. Sabrina Rubin Erdely’s “A Rape on Campus” story was a bombshell story that became a national controversy. It seemed to confirm everything the Nth-wave feminists were saying about the scourge of white males raping white women on the college campus. All of the usual suspects rushed to the nearest outlet to display their outrage over the incident.
Of course, this later became known as the “Virginia Rape Hoax” as the story was completely fake. The only things about it that were true is the star of the story was a human who attended the university and the writer used her real name. Otherwise, the story was a total fabrication and a ridiculous one at that. Sensible people noticed huge problems with it from the start. The two big clues that it was fake were that it read like a bodice ripper and the villain was named Haven Monahan.
In retrospect, this story was a turning point for mass media. By the old rules, everyone involved would have been shamed out of the public eye. The writer, Sabrina Erdely, would have been drummed out of the profession. Jackie Coakley, the coed who was the fake victim, would have been destroyed by an angry media. Erdely faced no repercussions and still works in the media. Coakley was mostly ignored and has gone on with her life, not having suffered from it.

Becoming an astronaut requires perfect 20/20 vision, but unfortunately, the effects of space can cause astronauts to return to Earth with degraded eyesight. Now, researchers from UT Southwestern Medical Center have developed a sleeping bag that that could prevent or reduce those problems by effectively sucking fluid out of astronauts’ heads.

Food tech startup Perfect Day has released a report claiming that its process for producing milk proteins in the lab is much more environmentally friendly than getting them the old fashioned way, from cows.
“This shows that fermentation can unlock a more efficient way to make food that humans have a huge demand for,” CEO Ryan Pandya told Axios.

The development of drugs to treat cognitive problems in patients with mental illness may be a step closer after a team of researchers discovered that an existing drug – used to treat constipation – may be able to boost our ability to think more clearly.
Severe psychiatric disorders can have a devastating impact on a patient’s life. Cognitive impairments – ranging from decreased attention and working memory to disrupted social cognition and language – are widespread in psychiatric disorders such as major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. These common problems are poorly treated with current medications and often have a large impact on people’s lives, and so scientists are searching for ways of improving or restoring these functions.

Thermo-electric generators convert heat directly into electricity, using the voltage generated at the junction of two different metals. This sounds like an excellent way to generate electric power; there are no moving parts, no working fluids, and very little to go wrong. Unfortunately the process is inefficent, and is not going to displace steam turbines. The output is DC, which is not helpful if you want to use a transformer to change the voltage. Nonetheless, thermoelectric generators were and are used where their special characteristics are needed.

Throughout my life, I’ve often been accused of lacking empathy. It’s a critique that goes back to high school, when I was a compassionless bully. And I’ll admit, I do have an empathy problem, but only when it comes to imbeciles.
I just can’t muster sympathy for the stupid. I don’t hate them; I don’t even blame them (no one’s at fault for the intelligence they inherit). But when imbeciles become an obstacle, I have zero tolerance.
Hence why I’ve been unable to summon sympathy for the 1/6 rioters.
He’s got a point.

You’d think it would hardly need restating that inflation is chiefly caused by monetary profligacy by the government (especially the Federal Reserve and other central banks that think they can “create” money out of thin air), but the Biden Administration began on an ominous note with Slow Joe proclaiming that “Milton Friedman isn’t in charge any more.” Well, the CPI seems to have something to say about that.

Woke communism operates somewhat differently than 20th century totalitarian regimes. In those regimes, the government used arbitrary violence to control every aspect of public and private life. There was a scapegoat, as well as a simple narrative that explained everything.
In woke communist America, the government does not control everything, but where it leaves off, the cultural-business complex takes over. Education, corporate media, entertainment, big business, especially Big Tech and the Democratic Party, together constitute America’s woke communist regime. The scapegoat is white males. There is violence in the form of state-sanctioned mobs, but more often, and almost as effective, is cancelling. The narrative is that America is systemically racist and about to be overtaken by white supremacists. Everything must be made to fit this narrative. The Rittenhouse affair is a good example of how the facts must be twisted to fit the narrative. (The Jussie Smollett hoax is another example.)

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is defending one of its top officials who described mainstream Jewish groups and synagogues as “enemies” that “are working to harm you” in a recent speech to Muslim American activists, after Jewish organizations denounced her comments as anti-Semitic.
CAIR, which maintains close relations with some Democratic lawmakers, including Reps. Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), and Pramila Jayapal (Wash.), praised its Bay Area director Zahra Billoo as a “widely respected civil rights activist” and said it was “so grateful for the courage she demonstrates in her civil rights work.” The group claimed her speech was being mischaracterized and called the allegations of anti-Semitism a “blatant lie” and “smear campaign.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren recently stated that rising prices were due to corporations increasing their profits.
“This isn’t about inflation, this is about price gouging for these guys”.
It is simply incorrect.
No, corporations have not doubled their profits, and rising prices are not due to the evil doings of businesses. If evil corporations are to blame for rising prices in 2021, as Elizabeth Warren says, I imagine that they were magnanimous and generous corporations when there was low or no inflation, right?
Inflation is the tax of the poor.
It destroys the purchasing power of wages and engulfs the little savings that workers accumulate. The rich can protect themselves by investing in real assets, real estate and financial, the poor cannot.
Inflation is not a coincidence, it is a policy.
Elizabeth Warren is not an economist, she is a law professor. (And not even a good law professor, despite her being an affirmative-action hire at Harvard.) She has demonstrated that she knows nothing about economics beyond her socialist ideology and her proglodyte puritanism.

ZMan does a deep dive.
In a rules-based society, people who break the rules should suffer consequences commensurate with the damage done by the rule breaking. A general principle of Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence is that the punishment fits the crime. If the crime, however, prevents a much larger crime from occurring, the rule breaking ceases to be a crime and becomes a public service. While this theory makes sense to a sensible person, its abuse by the deranged and dangerous suggests a serious flaw.
Then there is the issue of the media. In the old analog days, it was easy to make an exception for the press. In these cases, they were treated like neutrals. Even though they knew the material they were reporting was illegally obtained, they were allowed to report on it because a free press trumps government secrecy. In the digital age where we no longer have a free press or actual reporters, this no longer makes sense. The media is just the marketing arm of the unofficial ruling party.

Can you imagine sound travels in the same way as light does? A research team at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) discovered a new type of sound wave: the airborne sound wave vibrates transversely and carries both spin and orbital angular momentum like light does. The findings shattered scientists’ previous beliefs about the sound wave, opening an avenue to the development of novel applications in acoustic communications, acoustic sensing, and imaging.

Now, developers from a South African startup Phractyl have unveiled a hybrid bird-plane with its concept “Macrobat,” which is unlike anything that the industry had created before. With tracked feet, bird legs, a tilting cabin, and tilting wings, the aircraft promises a ‘near-vertical takeoff and landing (NVTOL),” even from unprepared terrains.

I think we can now confidently declare that Yale is the most disgraceful major university in America. On top of the shameful behavior of Yale Law’s Stasi-like diversicrats in the now famous “Trap House” student email, we have recently learned of the fuss about a lecture from Dr. Sally Satel to Yale’s School of Medicine several months ago, based on her extended time living in Ohio and studying the opioid crisis up close. (Sally was a guest on our podcast two years ago discussing her upcoming project. It should be noted that she’s been a long-time lecturer at the Yale Psychiatry department, and has also worked extensively at drug treatment clinics.)
Sally has long been a critic of how political correctness has been corrupting medicine, such as in her book PC MD. She’s also disputed the ubiquitous claims that disparate health outcomes among the races are the result of racism, in The Health Disparities Myth (co-authored with Jonathan Klick).
To paraphrase the old internet clickbait cliche, you’ll totally believe what happened next (because it is so predictable): A “concerned group of Yale Psychiatry residents” issued a letter of complaint.

“This project is a game changer for Habitat for Humanity,” said Janet V. Green, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “We’re selling an affordable home to a family four days before Christmas, and at the same time, we’re finding solutions to build more efficient homes.”
The three-bedroom house will feature 1,200 square feet of living space, as well as two full baths.
In order to complete the project, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg partnered with Alquist and broke ground in July. Alquist used concrete in place of lumber to 3D print the walls, saving an estimated 15% per square foot in building costs.

One of the wonderful things about the Biden presidency is that, when things go wrong, Democrats can no longer blame Trump — and a whole lot of stuff is going wrong now. We are at the stage of events famously referenced by H.L. Mencken: “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”

We have noted the rapid decline of the Democrats’ popularity among Latinos. A group (if it makes sense to refer to such a diverse collection of voters as such) that has strongly supported Democrats until recently now is evenly split in its backing of the two parties, according to recent polls.
Ruy Teixeira argues that the news on Latino voters is even worse than now perceived. It’s noteworthy that Teixeira says this. In 2004, he, along with John Judis, wrote The Emerging Democratic Majority. They predicted that the rise of America’s Latino population would confer clear majority status on Democrats in the coming decades.
To be fair to Teixeira, I should point out, as Kyle Smith trenchantly does, that in 2004 “the Democratic Party was not yet a cult of lunatics dedicated to explaining that men can give birth, gigantic new federal spending programs reduce inflation, the comptroller of the currency should be someone who believes in ‘ending banking as we know it,’ energy production should be re-outsourced to Saudi Arabia and Latinos should be referred to as ‘Latinx.’”
