Explosions Kill 15 at Kabul Military Hospital, Official Says

2nd November 2021

Read it.

At least 15 people were killed and 34 wounded when two explosions followed by gunfire hit Afghanistan’s biggest military hospital in Kabul, a Taliban security official said on Tuesday.

The explosions took place at the entrance of the 400-bed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan hospital in central Kabul and security forces had been sent to the area, Interior ministry spokesman Qari Saeed Khosty said.

There was no confirmation of casualty numbers but a Taliban security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there were at least 15 dead and 34 wounded.

The Anchor-Outs: San Francisco’s Bohemian Boat Dwellers Fight for Their Way of Life

2nd November 2021

Read it.

For decades, a group known as the “anchor-outs” enjoyed a relatively peaceful existence in a corner of the San Francisco Bay. The mariners carved out an affordable, bohemian community on the water, in a county where the median home price recently hit $1.8m.

But their haven could be coming to an end – and with it, a rapidly disappearing way of life.

The anchor-outs live aboard semi-derelict boats abutting the town of Sausalito, an upscale enclave just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin county where mansions boast floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the water. Tourists arrive by ferry from the city on weekends, strolling the promenade of restaurants, wine bars, art galleries and boutiques.

Basically, aquatic squatters. Celebrated by The Guardian, but inconveniencing the Crust, they are not long for this world.

1st November 2021

Metafabric is the latest development in a broader emerging field of textiles for personal heat management, clothing that can heat or cool the wearer. Researchers hope that these textiles will not only enhance personal comfort, but reduce injury and death from extreme heat. They might even help slow climate change by reducing the need for air-conditioning and heating, which accounts for about 10 percent of global electricity consumption.

Peace Time: Where Have All the Soldiers Gone

1st November 2021

Read it.

One thing that made China’s modernized armed forces work was an adequate supply of well-educated and eager Chinese that were capable of mastering the skills required by China’s world-class military being produced. A critical problem is that future generations of well-educated Chinese recruits will be smaller and less eager to choose a military career. The key problem is that too many young Chinese cannot afford to marry and raise more than one child. The government has found this problem very resistant to solutions.

Why “Let’s Go Brandon” Infuriates and Terrifies the Democrat Left

1st November 2021

Read it.

Background, ICYMI: An AP reporterette claims she heard a Southwest Airlines pilot say “Let’s Go Brandon” into his cockpit mic. (So far no audio or video has emerged to prove her statement.) She also claims to have done what any other suburban, privileged white woman would do and demanded to speak to the plane’s manager. (Banging on the cockpit door to try and get a statement from the pilot.)

Legit or not, this alleged incident has brought out the full fury and rage of the Democrat left, with one former Deep State Operative/current CNN employee comparing “Let’s Go Brandon” to supporting a terrorist group. Former Clinton administration official Joe Lockhart says it indicates “a broader problem” which one presumes is the fact that a lot of unionized pilots aren’t Democrats. Another Democrat/CNN contributor declares “Let’s Go Brandon” is MAGA code for “Sieg Heil.” (In fairness, they say that about pretty much everything the right does.)

On the Link Between Great Thinking and Obsessive Walking

1st November 2021

Read it.

Charles Darwin was an introvert. Granted, he spent almost five years traveling the world on the Beagle recording observations that produced some of the most important scientific insights ever made. But he was in his twenties then, embarking on a privileged, 19th-century naturalist’s version of backpacking around Europe during a gap year. After returning home in 1836, he never again stepped foot outside the British Isles.

He avoided conferences, parties, and large gatherings. They made him anxious and exacerbated an illness that plagued much of his adult life. Instead, he passed his days at Down House, his quiet home almost twenty miles southeast of London, doing most of his writing in the study. He occasionally entertained a visitor or two but preferred to correspond with the world by letter. He installed a mirror in his study so he could glance up from his work to see the mailman coming up the road—the 19th-century version of hitting the refresh button on email.

The Case for Mutual Educational Disarmament

1st November 2021

Read it.

The theory of signalling likens many educational credentials to peacock’s tails: costly encumbrances, useful only as conspicuous proof that their owners are intellectually strong enough to bear them. And in “The Social Limits to Growth”, a book published in 1976, Fred Hirsch, once a writer for this newspaper, pointed out that education is often “positional” in nature. What matters is not only how much you have, but whether you have more than the next person. For many students it is not enough merely to acquire a good education. They must obtain a better education than the people jostling with them in the queue for sought-after jobs.

Positional goods are, by their nature, in strictly limited supply. Everyone can in principle live in a good neighbourhood, attend a good school, and work in a good job. But logic sadly dictates that not everyone can enjoy the nicest neighbourhoods, best schools or most prestigious jobs. As Hirsch pointed out, “what each of us can achieve, all cannot.”

Tribes Of The Right

1st November 2021

ZMan does some taxonomy.

If it was possible to hold a convention of people who makes some claim to being right-wing, it would be a quite a crowd. Polling consistently shows that about 40% of white Americans identify as conservative. About 20% identify as liberal. The remaining 40% probably lean proportionally. People who claim to be “moderate” are always left-wing, often far-left. On the other hand, people with no interest tend to live right-wing, so it is hard to know for sure how the undocumented fall.

Regardless, the right side of the scale is a crowded place, but there is not much agreement on what it means to be right-wing in America.

The Demand for Money Behind Many Police Traffic Stops

1st November 2021

Read it.

Harold Brown’s contribution to the local treasury began as so many others have in Valley Brook, Okla.: A police officer saw that the light above his license plate was out.

“You pulled me over for that? Come on, man,” said Mr. Brown, a security guard headed home from work at 1:30 a.m. Expressing his annoyance was all it took. The officer yelled at Mr. Brown, ordered him out of the car and threw him to the pavement.

After a trip to jail that night in 2018, hands cuffed and blood running down his face onto his uniform, Mr. Brown eventually arrived at the crux of the matter: Valley Brook wanted $800 in fines and fees. It was a fraction of the roughly $1 million that the town of about 870 people collects each year from traffic cases.

What’s the use of power if you can’t abuse it?

California High School Officials Blast Team Over 106-Point Victory

1st November 2021

Read it.

“The CIF Southern Section expects that all athletic contests are to be conducted under the strictest code of good sportsmanship. We expect coaches, players, officials, administrators and students to adhere to the Six Pillars of Character – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship,” the statement read, via the San Bernardino Sun.

“A score of 106-0 does not represent these ideals. The CIF-SS condemns, in the strongest terms, results such as these. It is our expectation that the Inglewood administration will work toward putting in place an action plan so that an event such as this does not repeat itself.”

Michelle Goldberg and the Art of the Big Lie

1st November 2021

Read it.

Lies come in all shapes and sizes, colors, odors, textures and tastes. Some are only little white lies, but more often the accompanying adjective suggests something unpleasant. Damnable lies used to be the most condemned, but today the foulest of all perfidious, incarnadine, silken and sulfurous lies are Big Lies.

Thus when New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg wants to reassure progressive voters that they can ignore the story about a ninth-grade girl who was raped (i.e. forcibly sodomized) in a girl’s restroom in a Loudoun County, Virginia school, she serves up her diversion under the title “The Right’s Big Lie About a Sexual Assault in Virginia.”

Among the attraction of calling what happened in Virginia “the Big Lie” is that Times readers know the term so well. Times writers have used it tirelessly during and after the Trump years. A year ago, before the election, Times columnist Paul Krugman served up “The War on Truth Reaches Its Climax: Trump is telling two big lies, and a third will come soon.” Per Krugman, “The first big lie is the claim that America is being menaced by hordes of ‘rioters, looters, arsonists, gun-grabbers, flag-burners, Marxists.’” The other Big Lie, Krugman nominates, was Trump’s “dismissal of the pandemic threat, his mocking of precautionary measures like mask-wearing,” actions which Krugman explained “have done a lot to help the coronavirus spread.”

‘The Profit’ Socialism Challenge

1st November 2021

Robin Hanson.

In fact, I’m so impressed with how well The Profit scenarios illustrate the value of capitalism that I now build upon it a challenge to socialists: please describe in detail how The Profit style enterprise reform would happen under socialism.

Of course, Hanson misuses the term ‘capitalism’ in the same way that almost everybody does, as if it were a synonym for ‘how we do business when we aren’t under socialism’, but aside from that, it’s a good read.
