Robin Hanson.
As a book I recently reviewed explains in great detail, elites are selected primarily for their prestige and status, which has many contributions, including money, looks, fame, charm, wit, positions of power, etc. Elites like to pretend they were selected for being experts at something, and they like to pretend their opinions are just reflecting what experts have said (“we believe the science!”). But they often lie; elite opinion often overrules expert opinion, especially on topics with strong moral colors. And elites are selected far more for prestige than expertise.

Steve Sailer.
A seldom-explained problem slowing the Democrats’ march to a permanent one-party state is that while their electoral grand strategy is impressively opportunistic, sleazy, and dangerous to the country, Democrats don’t like to think of themselves as the cunning bad guys.
Therefore, they blow elections, such as last week’s governor’s race in Virginia, by taking their own rationalizations for their schemes at face value. Ironically, the Democrats’ success at generating talking points for the press makes it hard for them to remember that their gambits are ruses rather than ethical imperatives. So they wind up taking their stances too far for their own electoral good.
Virtue-signaling doesn’t work too well if what you’re signaling is not, in fact, virtue.

Some of the $1.2 trillion to be spent pursuant to the bipartisan infrastructure bill will be devoted to true infrastructure. That portion of the money presumably would have been appropriated had Donald Trump ever gotten around to presenting, and been able to enact, an infrastructure bill.
But a goodly portion of the $1.2 trillion is pork. That money will be directed to groups favored by Democrats and in many cases will have little to do with actual infrastructure.
John Fund identifies one aspect of this problem in an article called “Pete Buttigieg’s new slush fund.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi survived an armed drone attack Sunday on his official residence in Baghdad that wounded seven of his guards.
The attack, which involved Iranian-made drones, was an assassination attempt that sends a message of intimidation to Kadhimi and any other Iraqis who pose a challenge to the influence of Iran and its proxy militias inside Iraq.
Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Iraqi security officials blamed Iran-backed Iraqi militias, which increasingly have challenged the authority of Iraq’s weak coalition government. They claimed that Kataib Hezbollah (“Brigades of the Party of God”) and Asaib Ahl al-Haq (“League of the Righteous”), two of Iran’s most powerful Iraqi surrogates, carried out the attack.
Those two Iraqi Shia militias also have launched many drone and rocket attacks on U.S. military personnel supporting the Iraqi armed forces. In January 2020, the United States retaliated for repeated attacks on American troops in Iraq by launching a drone strike that killed the commander of Kataib Hezbollah and his Iranian master, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the leader of the elite Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Quds Force, which trains and equips Iran’s network of regional proxy groups, has transferred thousands of drones, rockets, and missiles to Iran-backed groups in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, and Yemen.

I wrote here about the fact that, unfortunately, the anti-covid vaccines do not reliably stop those who get them from either contracting or spreading covid. This negates the argument in favor of vaccine mandates and passports, since the real benefit of a vaccine is in reducing the severity of infection, not in preventing its spread to others.
But data released yesterday by the Minnesota Department of Health cast doubt on the effectiveness of the vaccines, even as to those who receive them. For the week ending November 8, 111 out of 168 newly announced “covid deaths”–66%–were among the fully vaccinated. Likewise, 347 out of 883 hospital admissions for covid (or with covid)–39%–were of the fully vaccinated. (Via Healthy Skeptic.) There is nothing unique about Minnesota, so I assume that these numbers are being replicated, more or less, elsewhere.
I marvel at the fact that people are willing to say, with a straight face, and apparently believe, that those who are unvaccinated represent a threat (a MORTAL threat) to those that are. That’s like saying that people who don’t wear seatbelts endanger those who do WHO ARE IN A DIFFERENT VEHICLE.
Dude, if your ‘vaccine’ will not prevent you from (a) getting the disease or (b) passing it on, THE PROBLEM IS NOT WITH THE UNVACCINATED BUT WITH THE PEOPLE WHO SOLD YOU THE VACCINE. Not to mention your own simplemindedness for believing their horseshit.
A constant reminder that half of the population is, by definition, below average in intelligence. (Yet they still get to vote. And their vote counts as much as yours, sometimes more if they vote Democrat.)

These words wouldn’t have had the same effect if they were said by anybody else, but coming from Arnold Schwarzenegger, the bodybuilding Terminator-turned-California-Governor, delivered in his trademark German accent, they were absurdly apposite. It can be difficult to discern the outlines of tyranny when it is couched in the language of Constitutional norms and the structures of democratic federalism, and exercised by slick folks who look and talk like Gavin Newsom or Joe Biden. The Bidens and Newsoms are, after all, just issuing well-intended “mandates” backed, after all, by “the science.” Arnold’s visceral expression—all too reminiscent, to me at least, of his Nazi officer father—should be a wake-up call to all of us frogs contentedly boiling in our pots: Get out now, while we still can.
We need a new term to apply to RINOs, people who are too statist to be really Republicans but not crazy enough to be actual Democrats — you know, the John McCains/Mitt Romneys/Arnold Schwarzeneggers of the world. (You could even include various Bushes; I wouldn’t say you nay.)

ZNan points out that there is nothing new under the sun.
For generations, One of the ironies of American politics is that the rank and file of the two main factions never get what they want but they stick with their side. The recent election is a good example of this as the “winning team” was immediately finked on by their party. They thought the message they sent to their leaders and the rulers, in general, is they are done with the craziness. The Republican leaders promptly supported the Democrats in generating more crazy.
It has been noted before that for the people who call themselves conservative and support the Republican Party, their best president was Bill Clinton. His was the most conservative administration since Eisenhower, according to the modern definition of conservative. The worst president was George W. Bush, the guy the Republican Party claimed was the epitome of conservatism. Conservative voters still hate Bill Clinton and mostly ignore Bush.

Heaps of unworn clothes are being discarded in the Chilean desert, adding to a swiftly swelling graveyard of fast-fashion lines past.
According to a report from Agence France-Presse, the massive mound of clothes consists of garments made in China and Bangladesh that make their way to stores in the US, Europe, and Asia. When the garments are not purchased, they are brought to Chile’s Iquique port to be resold to other Latin American countries.

Maria Bartiromo has tracked the Clinton/Russia hoax all along the way on her daily FOX Business morning show and weekly on FNC’s Sunday Morning Futures. Yesterday she interviewed former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe to comment on developments in the Durham investigation.
I have no expectations concerning the investigation and only hope to be pleasantly surprised. Not so Ratcliffe. Having seen the intelligence, he knows where the bodies are buried and anticipates that Durham will dig them up. Indeed, Ratcliffe explains that he has turned over documents showing Durham where the bodies are buried. I found Ratcliffe’s comments of interest and thought readers who may have missed the segment might want to see it.

Democrats struggle with “messaging,” because their message doesn’t make any sense. Critical Race Theory is not taught in schools, and parents shouldn’t be allowed to stop it from being taught in schools. It’s wrong to give experimental vaccines to dogs, and all children should be required to get a COVID vaccine despite the lack of research. Lack of minority representation in American culture is proof of our underlying racism, and we should remove all minority images from everything from baseball teams to pancake syrup.
Democrats can’t figure out how to unload a cargo ship, but they can control the weather 100 years from now. Blacks don’t have the opportunities that whites do, and it’s wrong when white kids claim to be black on their college applications so that they can get into a good school. Democrats want to spend trillions of dollars that don’t exist to fund projects that won’t happen because of setbacks that aren’t real.

Dating and the process of mate selection have changed. The rise of hook-up culture, proliferation of dating apps, and ever-increasing age of first marriage are evidence of this. This current situation can be summarized along four parameters:
- Increasing female achievement.
- Growing variability in male status and competence.
- An evolutionary desire among females to marry up.
- The globalization of the sexual marketplace and resultant collapse of local status hierarchies.
Together, these conditions have created pronounced imbalances in the modern sexual marketplace. Put plainly, an increasing cohort of successful women are chasing a shrinking number of high-value, commitment-averse men.
Think about it: Is a rich man more likely to want to marry a woman like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortiz, or one like Melania Trump? The question answers itself, and it’s bad news for the AOCs of the world.
I predict that Greta Thunberg has a long spinsterhood to look forward to.

Iran is trying to organize a Shia militia in Syria like Hezbollah in Lebanon. The recruiting effort is disappointing because few Syrian Shia want to have anything to do with Syrian Hezbollah, Iran or serving in any military force. The Syrian Shia have been fighting for a decade and have made it clear that they want no more of it for a while, perhaps a long while. Meanwhile the original Hezbollah in Lebanon finds itself with less local support and growing threats of another civil war if Hezbollah does not disband and abandon efforts to intimidate and control the national government. This is all because of the Syrian civil war.
