When it comes to salaries, this is what it’s always been like for job applicants. You make your best guess of how much to ask for, based on the few tidbits about pay ranges that you’ve been able to glean from friends and co-workers and job apps, and then you negotiate in the dark. It’s a system of secrecy that benefits employers: By treating everyone’s salaries as “confidential,” companies are able to keep workers guessing about how much they’re willing and able to pay.
That’s all about to change. A growing number of states are enacting measures known as “pay transparency,” which force companies to disclose their compensation levels. New laws set to take effect in Connecticut and Nevada next month, and in Rhode Island in 2023, require employers to provide applicants the salary range they pay for each position at some point in the hiring process. Four other states and two cities have enacted similar mandates, some of which also require employers to disclose their pay scales to existing employees. The most far-reaching law, which Colorado implemented in January, compels businesses to include their salary ranges in every job posting — effectively making their payroll public.
The backbone of a market economy is the price system – we depend on prices being accurate reflections of the value of the use of a resource for that particular ‘product’. The chief hole in directed economies (such as communism) is that, whatever its imperfections, the price system beats central planning six ways from Sunday at allocating resources satisfactorily.
One of the constant temptations in business, a temptation that is rarely resisted, is to promote inefficiency in favor of the business by hiding efficient price information from one side of the transaction. In hiring, this disadvantaged party is the employee. Nothing is so common as a company that won’t tell you what the salary for a position is (or could be), but hides behind the fog-speak ‘competitive pay’. (Competitive with what? With whom?) I’ve never worked at a company where telling somebody else in the company what you are paid won’t get you fired (if they catch you).
And historically it has been very difficult for prospective employees to educate themselves in this area. But times are changing.

Parking and privacy aren’t typically things that go hand in hand. That’s changing.
Colin Shanahan discovered this during a recent visit to the Trader Joe’s grocery store in Hollywood.
After parking his car in the garage — seldom an easy task, as any SoCal TJ’s customer will attest — he was instructed by an attendant to download an app to his phone, register for service and use that for payment.
“Not wanting to give some random app a ton of personal information, I declined,” the Hollywood resident told me.
The parking-lot attendant, he said, “let me off with a warning that I wouldn’t be so lucky next time.”
Time to leave.
First of all, if you use the Metropolis app, you may not be paying just for parking. You may also be charged a “convenience fee” for your re-engineered legacy parking experience.
The company’s terms of service don’t specify how much this fee will run, stating only that the cost is “calculated as a small percentage of the total visit charge.”
No. Just … no.

I received a notification from one Twitter user alerting another to the fact that “Shinigami Eyes shows [me] as a transphobe”’ with a link to the webpage Shinigami-eyes.github.io. Confused, I clicked on the link and made a startling discovery. Shinigami Eyes is a browser add-on that highlights supposed “transphobic” and “trans-friendly” people, businesses and organisations. Unbeknownst to members of the public, users who enable this function are invited to colour code others in either red or green — red meaning “danger” and green meaning “safe”. The extension supports Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, Medium, Youtube, Wikipedia articles and search engine results. According to Google Chrome, it has over 40,000 current users, and the extension is also supported via Firefox and Android.

Poland’s border police announced Sunday that about 50 migrants have made it across the border into the EU from Belarus after forcing their way through fences and barriers, amid a standoff which has seen multiple thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers set up camps just meters from Polish guards.
“Yesterday, before 5 p.m., around 50 people broke into Poland near Starzyna,” Podlaska police said Sunday. “All of the people were caught by Polish uniformed services and brought back to the border, Border Guard spokeswoman Katarzyna Zdanowicz told Polish state news agency PAP,” France24 details of the statement.

Olaf Gersemann, a German journalist, 15 years ago set out to correct Europeans who believed that economic life in America was a race to the bottom. He showed that America’s flexible labor markets, dynamic growth, and job creation worked at least as well as Europe’s economies and welfare states. Now American writer David Harsanyi bookends that earlier project with a new text that punctures not European myths about America but the myths that some Americans hold about Europe.

Today it’s Kyle Rittenhouse. Not long ago it was young Nicholas Sandmann. And, of course, for four years or so it was the Trump-Russia collusion business. What do these three episodes have in common? That would be the fact of a wildly untrue liberal media narrative.

The New York Times has now published its fourth story on the investigation of James O’Keefe and Project Vertitas in connection with their possession of the diary of Ashley Biden. The otherwise questionable authenticity of the diary can be inferred from the involvement of the FBI. It has somehow become a federal case in the Age of Biden.
Today’s story is “Project Veritas Tells Judge It Was Assured Biden Diary Was Legally Obtained.” Subhead: “But a search warrant in the case suggests the Justice Department believes the diary kept by the president’s daughter Ashley Biden was stolen.” The story is by Times reporters Michael Schmidt and Adam Goldman with the assistance of researchers Susan C. Beachy and Matthew Cullen. That amounts to four cooks in the kitchen to produce what turns out to be thin gruel.

Belarus has confirmed that some 2,000 Middle East migrants are currently camped at the EU border crossing near northeast Poland, which has emerged as the main crisis point involving clashes with Polish border police and attempts to dismantle the security fence.
Amid frigid temperatures the crisis continues to escalate, with on Saturday the death of a young Syrian man being reported at the border. “Polish border authorities said Saturday that the body of a young Syrian man around 20 years old was found Friday. The man was found near Wólka Terechowska, a village in northeastern Poland,” The Wall Street Journal reports. “The exact cause of death wasn’t immediately determined, they said.”

We used to have lots of semiconductor fabs all over the country that could produce different kinds of chips, but these were gradually sold off or closed. It’s gotten so bad that the Pentagon relied on one production line for key chips, and that production line, owned by Abu Dhabi-controlled Global Foundries, just sold it off to a firm that will shut it down. The Pentagon is stockpiling extra chips, but in a war, these kinds of things get used very quicktly.

Taki is delightfully dyspeptic today.
Don’t let anyone tell you the Bagel is worse off than Kabul, where three people were recently shot dead by Islamic gunmen for playing music at a wedding. No sirree, people over here are shot every day and night, but not for playing music at a wedding. Give New York credit where it’s due. The city is a bloody horror if you’re living way uptown, way downtown, or in the Bronx, while the rest of Gotham is experiencing a new story of street savagery not seen in decades. The rich continue to leave, taking their tax revenue with them down south; the huddled masses arrive with outstretched palms expecting social justice. Street crime is rampant, Times Square is no longer a tourist trap because one can get killed there, yet the media continue to write and report on the evils of…Donald Trump. The perpetually offended, however, blame all this on racism by whites, ignoring that black-on-black crime is responsible for 95 percent and more of murders.

A Swiss billionaire is bankrolling a leading dark money group lobbying for the Biden administration’s Build Back Better plan and green energy jobs initiatives, according to corporation and lobbying records reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
Climate Power, one of the main groups pushing for the White House’s climate agenda, has billed itself as a traditional advocacy organization, with an advisory board featuring John Podesta, Stacey Abrams, and former senator Harry Reid. But the group doesn’t actually exist independently—it is owned and operates as a front group under the Fund for a Better Future, a Democratic dark money organization that has received the majority of its funding from Swiss health care mogul Hansjorg Wyss’s foundation since 2016, according to corporation records.
For all that Democrats constantly wring their hands about ‘dangers to our democracy’, they seem to be the ones doing their best to slide their way around it.
I love the smell of conspiracy in the morning.

I suspect that the cumulative effect of ‘social media’ is the latest addition to the toolbox of Natural Selection.
Think about it.
The more people become addicted to Facebook and Twitter, the less they engage with real life.
Real life includes having and raising children.
To the extent that people are allowing themselves to become addicted to social media, to that same extent they are slowly excluding themselves from the gene pool.
Think of it as evolution in action.

An anti-Israel activist who helped organize the 2010 flotilla of ships to the Gaza Strip and was the lawyer for a Palestinian terrorist who killed two Jewish college students is running for Congress as a Democrat in Michigan.
Huwaida Arraf, who this week launched her campaign based on her record of “fighting injustice” on the world stage, is an activist lawyer who cofounded the International Solidarity Movement, which encourages anti-Israel activists to take “direct action” to force confrontations with Israeli forces. Arraf has used her status as an American citizen to protect Palestinian terrorists, including during the infamous 2010 flotilla to Gaza that was blocked by the Israeli military. The flotilla, which was paid for by a group with ties to terrorist organizations, was loaded up with weapons and military equipment for Hamas.

The State Department is working to secure the release of several hostages taken by Iran-backed terrorists after they stormed the U.S. embassy facility in Sana’a, Yemen, U.S. officials told the Washington Free Beacon early Thursday.
A group of Houthi rebels reportedly stormed the U.S. compound on Wednesday seeking “large quantities of equipment and materials,” according to regional reports translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute. The raid comes just five days after the Houthis kidnapped Yemeni nationals who work for the U.S. embassy.
The State Department confirmed to the Free Beacon that the Yemeni staffers are being held hostage and that the Iran-backed militants stole property after breaching the American facility in Sana’a, which housed U.S. embassy staff prior to the suspension of operations there in 2015.
The Biden administration will, of course, do as little as possible.

Zman does some analysis.
The opposite rule of liberalism says that whatever the Left is saying, you should start with the opposite and that is where you will probably find the truth. For example, if they are accusing one of their bogeymen of something, most likely the target is not doing it and is not the bad guy. Odds are, it is the Left engaging in the activity. Whether it is latent guilt or deliberate distraction, the Left tends to accuse others of the things they are doing or plan to do in the future.
It is not always simple like we learned with the Russian collusion hoax. The Left is fond of creating elaborate and plausible concepts that they can use to frame issues so that they are the default moral position. Homosexual marriage is an example where they inverted the morality of the issue. Normal people felt the need to explain why we should maintain normal marriage, as if it was a novel concept. The opposite, of course, was the truth but it was hard for people to see it.

For the past few months the government of Belarus has been inflicting a wave of Middle Eastern “refugees” on the European Union through the borders of Lithuania and Poland. The migrants are flown from Turkey or Baghdad to Minsk and then carried by bus or taxi to the borders of the EU. Poland has borne the brunt of this onslaught, and the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border has intensified since the beginning of November.

The attacker’s motive is unknown, although “Allahu Akhbar” (Arabic for “defund the police”) features prominently in this news report.
