GOP legislators in Michigan have abolished the law that allowed Democrat governor Gretchen Whitmer to continuously lock down the state since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
TheBlaze reports that the state House, which is led by the GOP, voted 60-48 Wednesday to repeal the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945, which granted Whitmer the authority she used in locking down Michigan indefinitely. The law gave extensive authority to governors in issuing emergency declarations and setting rules to “protect life and property or to bring the emergency situation within the affected area under control.”
The state Senate, also held by the GOP, voted 20-15 to repeal the law last week.
The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional last October.
Since the repeal proposal had been the result of a citizen-initiated campaign, Whitmer is powerless to veto it.

Tomorrow is the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack in Norway. On July 22, 2011, a man named Anders Behring Breivik detonated a truck bomb in central Oslo next to government headquarters, killing eight people. While police and emergency services were dealing with the aftermath, Mr. Breivik drove to the island of Utøya, where a summer camp for Socialist Youth was being held. There he methodically shot and killed sixty-nine teenagers with a high-powered rifle. When police finally arrived at the island, he calmly surrendered.
And because of bleeding-heart liberalism he is still alive today, being maintained at taxpayer expense. “He was sentenced to 21 years in prison, in a form of preventive detention that required a minimum of 10 years incarceration and the possibility of one or more extensions for as long as he is deemed a danger to society. This is the maximum penalty in Norway.”

When considering these privacy issues, we might draw parallels with another technology. Many colour printers add secret tracking dots to documents: virtually invisible yellow dots that reveal a printer’s serial number, as well as the date and time a document was printed. In 2017, these dots may have been used by the FBI in the identification of Reality Winner as the source of a leaked National Security Agency document, which detailed alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.

Standard metadata is difficult enough to avoid – you have to scrub it afterwards, and the only piece of information you can stop from being created in the first instance is photo geolocation. Photo response non-uniformity, however, is far more difficult to extricate. Technically, it should be possible to suppress, for example, by reducing the image resolution, says Farid. But, by how much? This of course depends on many factors such as the type of device used for image capture, as well as the fingerprint matching algorithm employed. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to fingerprint removal.

Human memory is fallible and malleable. In forensic settings in particular, this poses a challenge because people may falsely remember events with legal implications that never actually happened. Despite an urgent need for remedies, however, research on whether and how rich false autobiographical memories can be reversed under realistic conditions (i.e., using reversal strategies that can be applied in real-world settings) is virtually nonexistent. The present study therefore not only replicates and extends previous demonstrations of false memories but, crucially, documents their reversibility after the fact: Employing two ecologically valid strategies, we show that rich but false autobiographical memories can mostly be undone. Importantly, reversal was specific to false memories (i.e., did not occur for true memories).

The researchers found that there was a positive correlation between higher penetration of Airbnb properties in an area – for example buildings containing multiple Airbnb lets – and a rise in violence. However, crime types associated with rowdy visitors, like drunkenness and noise complaints, as well as private conflicts, did not increase.
According to one study author, the correlation isn’t due to Airbnb tourists falling prey to pickpockets, but rather the way the short-term rental service can push long-term residents out of neighbourhoods.

Democratic congresswoman Marie Newman (Ill.) acknowledged in court that she promised a six-figure job to a would-be political rival—an apparent bribe that may violate federal law.
Newman’s taxpayer-funded attorneys conceded to a federal judge that the Democrat promised a top job in her office to a local Palestinian activist, which he said aimed to keep him from running in a 2020 primary, legal filings obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show. The admission came after the activist, Iymen Chehade, sued Newman for breach of contract when the Democrat did not follow through with the job offer.

Shane Sonderman, of Lauderdale County, Tenn. admitted to conspiring with a group of criminals that’s been “swatting” and harassing people for months in a bid to coerce targets into giving up their valuable Twitter and Instagram usernames.
At Sonderman’s sentencing hearing today, prosecutors told the court the defendant and his co-conspirators would text and call targets and their families, posting their personal information online and sending them pizzas and other deliveries of food as a harassment technique.
Other victims of the group told prosecutors their tormentors further harassed them by making false reports of child abuse to social services local to the target’s area, and false reports in the target’s name to local suicide prevention hotlines.
Eventually, when subjects of their harassment refused to sell or give up their Twitter and Instagram usernames, Sonderman and others would swat their targets — or make a false report to authorities in the target’s name with the intention of sending a heavily armed police response to that person’s address.
Yet another reason not to be on Twitter, Facebook, or other public-facing ‘social media’.

For now, let’s use this stop to grab some popcorn and figure out how we got into this mess in the first place. We’re going to have to go back a bit to the post-war era. U.S. government spending fell from $93 billion in 1945 to under $35 billion by 1947. And by 1947, the U.S. was running a budget surplus of close to 2% of GDP to pay off the debt. Great money management.
But since that time, debt has been steadily rising and it really started piling up in the mid-2000s. So how does the government decide how much debt is too much? By agreeing on something called the debt ceiling—but Congress just keeps voting to raise or even totally suspend the debt ceiling. That would be like calling your bank and just upping your line of credit every time you’re close to maxing out a credit card.
Of course, the responsible thing to do would be to pay off your debt, not just hike the limit. Yet that’s exactly what Washington does when faced with a debt problem.

At a congressional hearing on “Birthing While Black,” nearly every politician used the words “birthing people” instead of “women” or “mothers.” Asked why, Shalanda Young, President Joe Biden’s budget director, said, “Our language needs to be more inclusive.”
Activists have also changed “equality” to “equity” and “affirmative action” to “diversity.”
The Associated Press no longer uses “mistress.” It tells reporters to use “companion, friend, or lover.”
Worse, certain speech is now labeled “violence.”

Rampaging cyber hoods will be using compromised machinery and systems to kill humans by 2025, according to cheerfully optimistic new predictions from research company Gartner.
The warning around what Gartner calls “operational technology (OT) environments” – which it described as “hardware and software that detects or causes a change, through the direct monitoring and/or control of industrial equipment, assets, processes and events”, so basically industry and infrastructure with moving parts – comes following an increase in assaults on such systems, frequently in connection to ransomware attacks or simple state-sponsored hooliganism.
While such attacks can be dangerous, any threat they currently pose is typically a secondary effect of the avarice of the perpetrators: a ransomware attacker shutting down a water company is not usually trying to cause customers of the affected company to die from dehydration, for example. They just want to inconvenience everyone enough for the company to pay up. There have been exceptions.
But Gartner then suggested that attempts to deliberately hurt humans will be the next logical step.
(Reminder that The Register, although a tech tabloid, is still a tabloid.)

Frankly, if the numbers don’t convince you this insanity is an illegal take-over of our institutions (partly by corrupt traitors within. Hey, anyone know how many lampposts there are in the continental US? Asking for a pissed off We The People) look at it from the psychological side: the only way a major party would run Joe and the Ho from a basement, with virtually no appearances in public, and on a platform of “we’ll open the border so you’ll be invaded, and tax you till you teeth hurt, oh and take away your fossil fuels too” is if they knew, because they’d been cheating for years, that they’d finally achieved a level of cheating in which they didn’t need any input from We The People, and no matter how we voted, their side would win. It was a potemkin campaign leading up to a grand theft election. (Or do you think they’re fighting so hard against election reform because they care about the individual? Ah!)

One of the biggest myths surrounding Cuban health care is the country’s low infant-mortality rate. Cuba is able to achieve what appears to be a remarkably low infant-mortality rate not through superior and widespread health care, as defenders of the system want to believe, but rather through forced abortions and falsified statistics.
Cuba has one of the highest abortion rates in the world. Women are regularly pressured into aborting babies that could have some sort of “abnormality,” and Cuban doctors are notorious for performing abortions without consent of the mother.
Moreover, Cuban doctors have admitted to regularly falsifying statistics about childbirth in an attempt to keep the country’s child-mortality rate artificially low.

ZMan turns over a rock.
Of course, the big lie to this point is that the measures the government imposed were rooted in science. Mask wearing was about preventing the sick from spreading the virus to the rest of us. Alternatively, it was about keeping healthy people from inhaling the virus as it buzzed around in the air. The social distancing stuff was also supposed to be science! None of the measures turned out to be rooted in anything more than superstition and a desire to abuse the population.
The reason that most people went along with these measures initially was that the official word about the virus was that it was Black Death. It is easy to forget, but the regime circulated images of bodies in the streets over in Wuhan. They used similar images when the virus hit Italy. Then they used images from horror movies claiming they were from overrun hospitals. They sold the virus as a potential extinction event, so even the most cynical prepared for the worst.
Corona has become the very definition of the big lie. The warnings about the virus were “lies so colossal that no one would believe that someone could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.” One should take a minute to appreciate the amazing bit of irony in all of this. Hitler is credited with coining the term to describe the people he saw as his natural enemy. Today, the people relying on the big lie to sustain themselves are making themselves mad looking for Hitler.

It’s ironic that the documentarian best known for a television series about the Civil War seems to have forgotten the Civil War. That is the only conclusion one would have to make about PBS filmmaker Ken Burns because on Friday’s The 11th Hour With Brian Williams, after briefly discussing Robert E. Lee and Woodrow Wilson, he declared that “this is the most fraught time I think in the history of our republic.”
Really, Ken? More fraught than the American Civil War that you chronicled in which over half a million died? Well, according to the sanctimonious lecture provided by Burns, these times are even worse because of “misinformation and paranoia and the lying voter suppression.”
He’s saying this to Brian Williams, who is known for misinformation. There’s a lecture about Critical Race Theory, and Burns cartoons the conservative (and common sense) opposition as usual.

Researchers from France and Russia have published a study indicating that the use of AI-driven probabilistic text generators such as GPT-3 are introducing ‘tortured language’, citations of non-existent literature and ad hoc, uncredited image reuse into previously respectable channels for the publication of new scientific literature.
Perhaps of most concern is that the papers studied also contain scientifically inaccurate or non-reproducible content presented as the fruits of objective and systematic research, indicating that generative language models are being used not only to bolster the limited English skills of the papers’ authors, but actually to do the hard work involved (and, invariably, to do it badly).

If you have a modicum of common sense or even if you have only been listening to his Secretary of the Treasury, you would have reasonable concerns about inflation.
Speaking at the White House and staring vacantly into his prompter, our animatronic president argued that his alleged $4.5 trillion “infrastructure” spending blowout (even as downsized) will fund decades of economic growth and keep prices low. “My ‘Build Back Better’ plan will be a force for achieving lower prices for Americans looking ahead,” he said. “If your primary concern right now is inflation, you should be even more enthusiastic about this plan,” said the president. Indeed, it will do everything but prevent male pattern baldness.

CNBC pulled the nothing-to-see-here angle from its back pocket and pontificated how “[w]hile volatility can be troubling for investors, experts caution against any hasty selling when markets fall.” Really?
The outlet ran two subheadings in its piece that were just as absurd given the extent of the market collapse. The first was “Volatility is common.” The second was “Volatility can be your friend.”

A member of the Air Force Academy Board of Visitors has sued over Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin suspending the board, claiming it prevented vital oversight, including over the potential introduction of critical race theory in the university curriculum.
The board is one of 42 Defense Department advisory committees that Mr. Austin suspended to consider their “continued utilization,” according to a Pentagon memorandum.
The Air Force Academy board or AFA BOV remains shut down despite passing Mr. Austin’s April 30 deadline to complete the review.
