I attended a small Episcopal church for more than thirty years until COVID closed it down last year. Or, to be more precise, the bishop of the Diocese of Southern Virginia closed it down. After Governor Ralph “Coonman” Northam allowed places of worship to reopen (with capacity restrictions), the bishop, in her infinite wisdom, decided that Episcopal congregations would not be safe if people attended services in churches, so she issued a ukase insisting that they remain closed.
St. Paul tells us that “Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow — not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.” (Romans 8:38) But he didn’t know about COVID, which is more powerful than all those things he mentioned. It not only separates Episcopalians from God’s love, it obviously deprives them of their ability to reason.

Biden is dishonest. His memory is shot. He’s an influence-peddler pretending to be a victim, a lifelong exploiter of his public position who hides behind the lowest forms of sentimentality.
Hunter Biden, of course. You’d have to be on the wrong end of a three-day crack binge to confuse Hunter Biden with the impeccably honest, mentally agile and profoundly principled multimillionaire career politician Joe Biden.

StemExpress, a Sacramento-based biotech company, and PayCertify, a financial tech services company in the San Jose area, are expected to combine to create more than 200 jobs in Reno over the next few years, the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada said Wednesday.
“Northern Nevada’s tech ecosystem is thriving and high-growth companies, like Stem Express and PayCertify, are increasingly vital to our region’s economic recovery and future,” EDAWN CEO Mike Kazmierski said.

When travelers go online to find out whether it is legal to fly with cash, the government tells them that there are no restrictions on traveling with any amount of money on domestic flights. What it does not tell flyers is that, upon seeing cash, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners will detain them and turn them over to law enforcement, who will take their money without any cause for suspicion and without filing any criminal charges. Now, a Fourth Amendment, class action lawsuit filed by the Institute for Justice (IJ) to end these unconstitutional practices by the TSA and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will move forward in federal court after a judge rejected the government’s motion to dismiss.

For decades, the EPA relied on unreviewable studies to impose draconian restrictions on businesses and industries, and thus on the U.S. economy. Trump wanted to bring true transparency to the process. Opponents claimed the Trump secret science” rule would block the use of critical public health studies kept secret supposedly to protect the identities of trial participants – which of course was not the case.

A few days ahead of last year’s presidential election, Kamala Harris tweeted: “There’s a big difference between equality and equity”. In an accompanying video, Harris effectively argued that equality of opportunity was a sham and that “equitable treatment means we all end up at the same place.”
You could interpret Harris’s words as a Marxist argument for equality of outcome (a bold move just before polling day). Thankfully, however, the Vice President of the United States is not a full-bore Communist. Instead, she is a Democratic politician eager to keep up with the left’s ever-changing orthodoxies. According to those rules, “equality” is out and “equity” is in, a rhetorical change that is about more than words. Rather, it represents a profound shift in thinking — a shift that the Biden administration has so far embraced wholeheartedly.

As I’ve often mentioned, if you read New York Times articles very carefully all the way to the end, you can usually find the facts you need to know to deduce what actually happened. But happy NYT subscribers seldom have their worldviews’ challenged with inconvenient facts up front.

Today’s at the Capitol, a car crashed into a barrier, injuring two officers. The driver of the car got out with a knife, and was shot by authorities. I think. So I went to the Fox News website, to see what they know about all this. Not much, as it turns out, which is understandable – this just happened a couple hours ago. The news article did not identify the shooter, except to refer to him as “a lone wolf” which is generally media-speak for a devoted member of al-Qaeda or some other Muslim terrorist group. But perhaps not this time. Hard to say. I have no idea, of course. There are very few facts to be had, this early on.

There was a running gag in Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back about the “Miramax backlot”. There was no such thing. When Miramax made a movie, they rented facilities at the lowest price wherever they could get them, like every other small-time producer, and not a few larger ones. Make no mistake about it, though, Miramax was a real studio, because Bob Weinstein could pick up one telephone and get a substantial line of bank credit to make a film, then his odious brother Harvey could pick up the other phone and get a binding financial commitment to release that same film in theaters and on TV networks in Europe and India.
That’s all it takes. It can be a single individual, or a small risk-taking group, with no more than a minimal office staff, if it has the established connections to make those global distribution deals and a seriously strong checkbook. This has always been the case. United Artists was a major studio for sixty years without ever owning a physical studio to make the films in. When it launched James Bond or made The Great Escape and Midnight Cowboy, it didn’t own so much as a single movie camera, or so much as one square foot of backlot property. When billionaire Philip Anschutz decided to buy and make a Narnia series, Walden Media didn’t need any of that either.

There are lots of libertarians at the end of a pandemic — and for good reason. For more than a year now Americans have watched the actions of dysfunctional government officials play out like the worst reality show of all time.
If the ineptitude wasn’t so infuriating, it might make for entertaining TV. There was the episode when the smug governor who asked his constituents to stay home got caught dining at French Laundry. Or what about the one when the White House coronavirus response coordinator broke her own travel restrictions to winterize her vacation home — and got ratted out by members of her own family?

Thursday’s episode of A Million Little Things was so heavy-handed in pushing the latest cause-de-jour (“Stop APPI Hate”) that the entire episode played out more like one giant PSA on a supposed “epidemic” of hate and violence towards Asian Americans, with whites and Trump to blame, of course, despite strong evidence to the contrary.

I’ve had a theory for a while now, for which there is some suggestive empirical survey data, that the left began to go nuts a couple years before Trump rode down the escalator in 2015 and caused full-blown leftist insanity. The theory, first suggested to me by Charles Murray actually, is that the activist left was frustrated and angry by around 2014 that President Obama was such a huge disappointment. He was the “lightworker,” almost literally the second coming of Jesus. And from the point of view of the left, what did he actually deliver? A crappy health care plan is about it.

Privilege, like cocaine, is a white drug. It’s important not to be caught in possession of it. If you’re caught using it, you may be ordered to check your privilege, and recognise that your views are nothing more than a defence of your position in the racial hierarchy in which you secretly believe.
The purest form is white privilege, which is the refined product of systemic racism. According to the American feminist Peggy McIntosh, white people carry racial privilege in an invisible knapsack. McIntosh is white. So is Robin DiAngelo, who coined the term white fragility in 2011 and has made a fortune as a race awareness consultant for corporations wishing to insure themselves against discrimination suits from disgruntled employees.

What is the over/under on when the press stops blaming every damn thing that goes wrong on Trump? The coronavirus did, in fact, originate in China, likely in a Chinese laboratory. Regardless, that makes it a Chinese virus by normal standards of nomenclature. If we are looking for a scapegoat, a better candidate is Harvard University, which takes the position that Asian-Americans–not the Chinese Communist Party–are inferior to all others in personal qualities like “leadership.”

When we think of corrupt American cities, Chicago always tops the list. However, San Francisco has long had one of the more corrupt American civic governments. However, because the City was still better managed than Chicago, nobody really commented on that fact. More than 1,300 schools have become “test optional,” meaning students need not submit SAT scores. Some, like the entire University of California system, now won’t even look at scores.
There are seemingly legitimate reasons to oppose the tests. Richer kids often get tutoring that gives them an advantage.
Critics claim the tests are culturally biased and say that’s why Blacks and Latinos don’t score as well. But that doesn’t explain why Asians do so well. In fact, Asians get the best SAT scores.
I assume it’s more about culture and parenting. Kids raised in front of the TV do poorly. Those encouraged to read do better. Kids who spend time talking to adults do better.

Gov.Kristi Noem has been taking a lot of flak from the conservative punditry over her “veto” of South Dakota HB 1217 intended to protect girls’ and women’s sports from transgender athletes. I use veto in quotes because there are technical and procedural rules in South Dakota that either made Gov. Noem’s rejected “form and content” revisions a veto or the legislature’s inaction on them a veto. Be that as it may, South Dakota currently has no statute in place. I say currently because Gov. Noem has announced she will call a special session of the Legislature to resolve this. In the meantime the Governor has issued two executive orders to fill the gap.
Her objections were not to the substance of the bill but rather to its mechanics. They seem well-founded, and all of the hair-on-fire antics in the news misplaced.

Here’s a question. If there is no border crisis, why is Joe Biden’s Department of HHS inviting federal employees in departments having nothing to do with immigration or health to travel to the border and provide assistance?
Here’s another question: Isn’t the Biden administration inviting a misappropriation of federal funds?
And finally: What are such federal employees from random agencies supposed to do when they get to the border?

Say what you want about the sickness of cancel culture, it can be great for business. Nothing rallies paying readers to a writer quite like the news that somebody wants him or her silenced.
Nothing, that is, apart being called ‘odd’ by the New York Times. On Monday, the paper produced an article about Harper’s magazine by its ultra-successful media columnist Ben Smith. Under the headline, ‘Inside America’s Most Interesting Magazine, and Media’s Oddest Workplace’, Smith was generous about Harper’s but quite rude about its president, John R. MacArthur, whom he made out to be an eccentrically dressed crank.
The result? Harper’s had its best week ever for subscriptions.
