In parts of the US and Europe, Covid has turned into a weird religion. It is not just a public health issue to be managed and navigated, but a stand-in for Old Scratch. The faithful are not only vigilant, they are Covid vigilantes, minding everyone’s business about it.

Just let the experts run things!’ You can see this in the news as the neo-fascists in our Ruling Establishment clutch The Science to themselves like a security blanket. If The Experts were always correct, this might be a persuasive argument. Unfortunately, one age’s Science is another’s Mythology — just look at the history of the government’s Food Pyramid for a particularly blatant example. And — I’m shocked, shocked — it turns out that the Experts can have a political agenda the same as anybody else (the one’s who aren’t outright Sucking Up To Power). So that brings politics right back in. (Turns out that The Science can be played like a guitar depending on whom you listen to and whom you don’t. Isn’t that amazing.)

Political theater is an essential element of liberal democracy. We live in the modern version of a Dionysian age. All public acts are public performances, and all public performances are part of the larger morality play of politics. Facts and the discourse upon facts is purely a private affair. It is why everything about Covid has been politicized and only came to our attention when it could be politicized. For a year we have been watching Covid theater, rather than a public health response.

The agency in a press release described the Quidel Quick-Vue At-Home COVID-19 Test, the fourth one it’s approved since last November, as “another antigen test where certain individuals can rapidly collect and test their sample at home, without needing to send a sample to a laboratory for analysis.”

Good news, right? Right? Uh, no.

The at-home test will require a prescription from a doctor, for individuals suspected of COVID-19, “within the first six days of symptom onset.”

A PRESCRIPTION? FOR A SIMPLE TEST? A TEST DESIGNED TO BE DONE AT HOME BY AN INDIVIDUAL?

Is that not the most stupid, brain-dead, government-bureaucrat BULLSHIT that you’ve ever heard of?

A billion or two years ago, corals, brachiopods, and other sea creatures took carbon dioxide and calcium out of the seawater to build shells out of calcium carbonate, CaCO3. They were little biological factories capable of building giant structures like coral reefs. When they died they would sink to the bottom of the shallow seas and become limestone.

About 200 years ago, Joseph Aspdin figured out how to reverse the process, cooking limestone and clay at high temperatures, which decomposes after the water and carbon dioxide is driven off, leaving calcium oxide (CaO). This reacts with other ingredients, silicates and aluminates, to make Portland cement. Mix that with aggregate and water, and the mixture crystallizes and glues everything together into concrete.

With the false claim of “rolling back voter rights,” anchor Norah O’Donnell gaslighted her audience in the opening tease about a supposed “Republican push in more than 40 states to limit voting access.”

When she finally got around to the story 10 minutes later, O’Donnell painted the GOP as radicals targeting minorities.

Rep. Katie Porter (D., Calif.), a self-styled working-class champion who has criticized the number of millionaires in Congress, has up to nearly $3 million in assets, filings show.

According to her most recent financial disclosure report, Porter has between $1.2 million and $2.8 million in assets. Porter’s leadership PAC, Truth to Power, recently solicited donations with a statement decrying the fact that millionaires comprise “a shockingly large portion of our federal government.”

I have no problem with legislators being millionaires, although it does rather make their Soak The Rich noises somewhat ludicrous.

In the early phase of pop culture, people got famous through some talent for entertainment. Now people get attention by being unusually freakish, deranged, or hysterical. The crazier the better.

This is why so many people now experience the world with their mobile device held up in front of their face. They are mining their daily experience for the currency of the age, which is often a viral video or a lot of likes on the social media platform. It is also why the super-rich are fond of supporting increasingly deranged social fads. If the freak show is the cathedral of the modern age, the super-rich must show their status by building bigger and better freak shows for the people.
