Heather Mac Donald documents the increase in violent crime that has accompanied the decrease in policing resulting from the denunciation, without evidence, of American police forces as racist, after an officer killed George Floyd in Minneapolis. She shows that the recent increase in violent crime has come with a speed and magnitude that makes the Ferguson effect — the spike that occurred after a police officer killed Michael Brown — seem tranquil.

If the Democrats were hoping that the pandemic would trash Trump’s performance on the economy, this will come as a bitter pill.

As the inner party feverishly tries to create enthusiasm for a second panic over the coronavirus pandemic, it is a good time to take a look at what has actually happened with the virus to this point. It is easy to forget, given the fire hose of nonsense that comes at us every day, but we were all supposed to be dead by now. Maybe not all of us, but a lot of us, a lot more than actually died. Instead, most of us are here, social distancing and wearing humiliation masks to please the rulers.
In fairness to the people who made the initial projections, the only way to get any attention in this age is to make outlandish claims. Everything about the modern media culture has evolved to reward the freaks, the crazy and the outlandishly dishonest, so the model makers probably felt they were doing the right thing. They wanted the rulers to treat the virus as a serious threat, so they were okay with rolling out doomsday predictions that were not grounded in reality.

My wife’s black friend from the office who became a Chicago policewoman told us that she was amazed by the number of calls they went on to adjudicate really stupid domestic disputes, such as the time a man and woman were having an argument over which TV show to watch, so they called 911 to send out a police officer to tell them who was right about which show was better.
So, there are a lot of calls, especially from the black community, demanding the police come out and resolve inane disputes that shouldn’t require a policeman.

To this point, 71 percent more Americans have died in New York nursing homes than have died in the entire state of Florida, which not only has a larger population but a population that skews older. To this point, New York’s death rate has been ten times larger than Florida’s. So, naturally, liberals are busy concocting a narrative that holds that the failures of the American response to coronavirus have been the fault of Trumpian nihilists in the Red States.
The “toxic imbecility” of Republicans is getting people killed, writes Max Boot. “Trumpism, not polarization, drives America’s disastrous coronavirus politics” says Ezra Klein. Some pundits who push this myth, Paul Krugman in particular, had even had the temerity to suggest that the country look to New York State for advice.
I can’t think of any circumstance where anyone ought to look to New York state for advice.

Recode co-founder and New York Times contributor Kara Swisher wrote an opinion piece for The Times that was no less than a tantrum aimed at Facebook’s refusal to be as censorious as other Big Tech companies in the lead up to this November’s election.
Swisher’s ultimatum to Facebook, “Clean Up Your Act, Facebook, or We’re Leaving,” is an example of the progressive left’s attempts at bullying platforms into censoring content that they disapprove of. The June 30 opinion piece gleefully noted that the Stop the Hate Facebook ad boycott campaign “organized by the N.A.A.C.P., the ADL, Color of Change and others” are “seeking to force [Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg] to change” by “focusing on your wallet, knocking billions off your net worth in recent days.”

A (now former) Amazon driver, Derick Lancaster, took to social media yesterday to inform the world not only that he was quitting his job as an Amazon driver, but also of the location of his fully stocked delivery van, which he claims to have left at a Metro Detroit gas station.
Not a good idea. If somebody steals or vandalizes the van or the packages, he’s liable.
Generous welfare benefits encourages this type of adolescent behavior.

There is really no reason to have a Department of Education; education is none of the business of the Federal government. It was carved out of the old HEW department and made a full cabinet slot in order to funnel money to the teachers’ unions and lock in their votes for the Democrats — it’s pure pork, from start to finish.

Cal Thomas.
In the latest of many cynical and highly political moves, the House of Representatives last week passed a measure that would transform the District of Columbia and make it the 51st state.
“D.C.,” as it is often abbreviated by locals, is already a “state.” It is a state of corruption, crime, and dysfunction.
The only reason Democrats favor the nation’s capital becoming a state is that it would gain two senators, who would almost certainly be Democrats and its “delegate,” Eleanor Holmes Norton, could then vote in the House. Currently she can only participate in committee hearings with the permission of the chairperson.
The Founders specifically prohibited the district from becoming a state, but who listens to them anymore as rioters deface and pull down some of their statues and liberal judges rewrite the Constitution to conform to the spirit of the age?

Triso— short for “tristructural isotropic”—fuel is made from a mixture of low enriched uranium and oxygen, and it is surrounded by three alternating layers of graphite and a ceramic called silicon carbide. Each particle is smaller than a poppy seed, but its layered shell can protect the uranium inside from melting under even the most extreme conditions that could occur in a reactor.
This appears to be a variant of the existing pebble-bed reactor design.
