In recent decades, income inequality in the United States has increased sharply, and the novel coronavirus crisis seems to have exacerbated the problem. Some blame tax cuts for creating billionaires and leaving the middle class behind, but it’s not that simple. While lower taxes did influence inequality, taxes alone are a red herring. Mounting evidence shows something else driving the uptick in inequality: Regulation.
Taxes are salient to this conversation, while regulation is silent. Every year on your W-2, and even more frequently on your paycheck, you see how many dollars of income you lose to taxes. Yet there is no such accounting for the unseen power of regulation to lower the average American’s income, raise prices and protect the position of the wealthy.

If the Democrats nominated Karl Marx, they’d describe him as a “moderate Marxist” . . .
It’s SOP for the Democrats and the liberal media: they invariably try to peddle their presidential candidates as “moderates” or “centrists.”
But on today’s Morning Joe, MSNBC’s John Heilemann took things an absurd step further, actually describing Biden as “culturally conservative.” That, of course, is baldfaced balderdash.

Freeberg lets loose.
Most of the frustrations involved in living as an adult human, have to do with conflict between appealing narratives vs. inconvenient realities. And perhaps the best example of this is the narrative that conservatives & liberals can, and should, “sit down and work out their/our differences, find common ground, labor toward the common good and learn from each other.” I think deep down both sides really do want that…so long as it doesn’t involve giving up anything. If it’s cost-free, most people with political opinions would like to be Archie & Meathead after they’ve softened up and learned to see eye-to-eye.
Our parents did that with other grown-ups who didn’t share the same political affiliations, right? Should be easy!
The problem is that what we today call “liberalism” has eschewed any & all notion that its adherents have anything at all to learn from those who are not adherents. This is non-negotiable. All electoral contests and all differences of opinion involve illegitimacy and ignorance on the side of the argument that is not theirs. Every election they lose, was cheated. Every dissenting opinion, indeed every statement or question that bleeds off some of the momentum, intentionally or not, comes from someone who shouldn’t have opinions at all.
Liberalism has devolved into a slightly off-center “I know something you don’t know” smirk. Worn by people who haven’t accomplished anything. And want to make all the decisions that matter, without accepting any ownership of the eventual results.

ZMan does a weekly podcast. You ought to subscribe. (I get it through what used to be called iTunes; don’t know what they’re calling it these days.)
The thing is, I could probably go on a ten hour, Chris Farley rant without too much trouble, other than the possible stroke. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am done with the ongoing revolution. It seems that everywhere we turn, there is some new madness or new tax on our patience. It is close to impossible to live a normal day, much less a normal life now. Even the most basic task brings a reminder that we live in a continent sized lunatic asylum.
…
Toleration has its limits. The other day I got an e-mail from a client. I’m not sure why I was included, as it was an internal e-mail to employees. The point of the e-mail was to suggest all employees list their preferred pronouns in their signature. It’s not enough that these people feel the need to deny reality. They insist that the rest of us participate in their madness. Everywhere you turn, someone is trying to make you carry the burden of their madness. It is tax that is never paid in full.

Last year we detailed the political firestorm unleashed in the UK after so-called British jihadist bride Shamima Begum demanded of British authorities to be repatriated.
The now 20-year old UK citizen joined Islamic State in 2015 after fleeing the UK when she was just 15. Last year she gave birth in a Syrian refugee camp and is demanding safe return to Britain for fear that she and her child could die in the camp, so near the war zone. Proponents for her legal return to British soil have argued that as a teenager she was unwittingly manipulated into traveling to Syria by ISIS propaganda.
But over a year ago her family was notified in a letter (on Feb. 19) from the Home Secretary that authorities had revoked her British citizenship because she traveled to join a foreign terrorist group. The decision has been under appeal while Begum and her child remain in custody of US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeast Syria.
That sounds pretty reasonable, actually.

The school said in a statement that the complaint said the newspaper, reporter Elizabeth Williamson and a photographer said the school suffered a COVID-19 outbreak when it reopened after spring break and that nearly a dozen students were sick with the virus.
The Times cited Dr. Thomas W. Eppes Jr., who was described as the doctor who runs Liberty’s health service. The lawsuit said Eppes’ job description was misrepresented as well as the information he provided. The school disputes that Eppes told the Times that students started getting sick after returning from spring break or that nearly a dozen Liberty students had symptoms that suggested COVID-19.

But at the heart of many of these arguments is another disagreement, about the nature and purpose of journalism. As a Bloomberg employee is said to have remarked at a recent meeting, reporters are meant to be objective, but to many the distinction between right and wrong now seems obvious. A new generation of journalists is questioning whether, in a hyper-partisan, digital world, objectivity is even desirable. “American view-from-nowhere, ‘objectivity’-obsessed, both-sides journalism is a failed experiment,” tweeted Wesley Lowery, a Pulitzer-winning 30-year-old now at CBS News. The dean of Columbia Journalism School described objectivity as an “inherited shibboleth” in a message to students. The Columbia Journalism Review pondered: “What comes after we get rid of objectivity in journalism?”
The problem arose with so-called journalism schools, which attracted a couple generations of people who went into ‘journalism’ to ‘make a difference’ — the way you ‘make a difference’ is by pushing an agenda, and that agenda was invariably progressive.

People who are blind from birth will gesture when they speak. I always like pointing out this fact when I teach classes on gesture, because it gives us an an interesting perspective on how we learn and use gestures. Until now I’ve mostly cited a 1998 paper from Jana Iverson and Susan Goldin-Meadow that analysed the gestures and speech of young blind people. Not only do blind people gesture, but the frequency and types of gestures they use does not appear to differ greatly from how sighted people gesture. If people learn gesture without ever seeing a gesture (and, most likely, never being shown), then there must be something about learning a language that means you get gestures as a bonus.

When Never Trumper and Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson went on Stephen Colbert’s parody news show on Monday night, Tooning Out the News, it would be a reasonable assumption that he probably looked forward to the interview. After all since the interviewers would be cartoon characters, it would probably be a lot of fun. Plus, since Stephen Colbert suffers from every bit as much of Trump Derangement Syndrome as Wilson he could expect it to be a friendly interview as well.
What could go wrong? Well, everything. As you can see, by the end of interview, poor Wilson was stunned into sullen silence.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson has a Republican pedigree and an evangelical Christian background. He wrote profound speeches for George W. Bush, who was mocked as a mangler of the English language. Today he sounds like a speechwriter for the gaseous opening of the Brian Stelter show on CNN.
A headline for a recent column was “Trump has taken up residence in an alternate political reality.” Gerson writes the most urgent national challenge is “the president inhabits a different country from the rest of us.”
