Intentions and Results

8th March 2020

Read it.

Results are the reason that while I thought Trump a con-artist in 2016, I will now vote for him in 2020. I strongly mistrusted his character, personality, and intentions. Yet he has delivered on the promises he made in 2016. The economy is stronger, the judiciary is better, taxes and regulations are lower, the United States is safer, and our enemies are weaker. Do I like the man? No. Do I like the results he has delivered? Yes.

Give me good results over good intentions every time.

Preach it, brother.

Italy’s Endangered Violin Forest

7th March 2020

Read it.

Since the 16th century, Cremona’s luthiers—including Stradivari himself—have been using an unusually resonant wood from Paneveggio, known as Italy’s “violin forest,” to handcraft the world’s finest string instruments. Then a 2018 storm decimated the forest. A band of experts in Cremona is now rallying to save this iconic tradition.

Since we know you don’t have anything more important to worry about.

Another Question the Media Won’t Ask

7th March 2020

Read it.

… the “objective” media is falling all over itself to explain Elizabeth Warren’s collapse as the result of sexism, despite the mountain of evidence that voters (including women voters in her home state) just don’t like her. Reminds me of the old story about the dog food company that spent millions hiring marketing consultants to determine why their dog food wasn’t selling, and after a lot of elaborate theories, someone came up with a clear explanation: dogs didn’t like the food.

I Don’t Want to be Scolded by Any Mean, Nasty Women

6th March 2020

Freeberg speaks for all right-thinking people.

Okay so we have to talk about what Elizabeth Warren did yesterday. Oh no, that’s not right is it? It’s about what we did to poor, poor, perpetual-victim Elizabeth Warren. It’s sexism, right? There’s stuff on the Internet that says so, so it must be true. Mean, nasty sexist conservative Republicans, somehow stopped enlightened liberal democrats from voting for Fauxahontas.

Someone, somewhere I know not who — could be a man, maybe? — has made the call that women have to be unpleasant and angry all the time, like Senator Warren, in order to be in charge. They didn’t ask me. It’s true in our politics, in our movies, our teevee shows, and anyplace else we come together and experience any form of art that is assembled in a central location and then distributed hither & yon. Somewhere there is a script: Women have to be mousey little types that stay in the kitchen and bake cookies, or else they have to give you a migraine. There can be no in-between.

The State of Play

6th March 2020

ZMan’s weekly podcast is well worth hearing.

What we are seeing, I think, is a madness spreading across the ruling class that is closely following the final feminization of it. If Elizabeth Warren had not lost her marbles on the campaign trail, the party would not be in the position to back a dementia patient for the nomination. Just let that sink in for a moment. The inner party is prepared to install a dementia patient in the White House as their best option. That is prima facie evidence that the political class has descended into madness.

2020 Pritzker Prize Proves That White Women Can Design Ugly Buildings Too

6th March 2020

Steve Sailer keeps track of this stuff so you don’t have to.

Besides promoting transgenderism and the career of Barack Obama, the Pritzker clan of Chicago tirelessly backs the cause of bringing more ugliness into the world with the Pritzker Prize for architects who inflict upon the world new shapes that nobody previously had thought were a good idea to build. Generally speaking, designing ugly buildings is a very white male thing (e.g, Thom Mayne, 2005 Pritzker Prize winner), but this year the Pritzker Prize people took a stand to remind us that two white women can design buildings that are just as ugly as one white man can.

Sequencing the Human Genome Was Supposed to Revolutionize Treatment of Disease – Here’s Why It Failed

5th March 2020

Read it.

An emergency room physician, initially unable to diagnose a disoriented patient, finds on the patient a wallet-sized card providing access to his genome, or all his DNA. The physician quickly searches the genome, diagnoses the problem and sends the patient off for a gene-therapy cure. That’s what a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist imagined 2020 would look like when she reported on the Human Genome Project back in 1996.

This is why you don’t take your science from journalists.

Your Mac can now help scientists find a coronavirus cure

4th March 2020

Read it.

You might already be familiar with SETI@Home. This uses spare processing power from personal computers all around the world to analyze data from radio telescopes, looking for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. That program is ceasing at the end of the month, as the university now has enough results to do a back-end analysis to make sense of it all…

But there’s a similar distributed computing project geared to finding cures for diseases, Folding@Home (FAH), and that has started work on trying to find a cure for the coronavirus.

So far, FAH has been working on four different cancers, three neurological diseases, and five infectious diseases.

If, of course, that’s what you want to do.

This is the first part of a six-part (II, III, IV, V, VI) series I expect to roll out taking a historian’s look at the Siege of Gondor in Peter Jackson’s Return of the King. We’re going to discuss how historically plausible the sequence of events is and, in the process, talk a fair bit about how pre-gunpowder siege warfare works. As with other Collections posts, this series will come out one-per-week, on Friday, until it’s done. This is, after all, a very long and involved sequence and there is a lot of context to work in.

SETI@home Search for Alien Life Project Shuts Down After 21 Years

4th March 2020

Read it.

SETI@home is a distributed computing project where volunteers contribute their CPU resources to analyze radio data from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico and the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).

Run by the Berkeley SETI Research Center since 1999, SETI@home has been a popular project where people from all over the world have been donating their CPU resources to process small chunks of data, or “jobs”, for interesting radio transmissions or anomalies. This data is then sent back to the researchers for analysis.

SETI@home has announced that they will no longer be distributing new work to clients starting on March 31st as they have enough data and want to focus on completing their back-end analysis of the data.

UPDATE: SETI@Home Is Over. But the Search for Alien Life Continues

Secession Studies

4th March 2020

Steve Sailer reviews Frank H. Buckley’s new book American Secession.

Born in Saskatoon, Buckley (no relation to William F.) imports the Canadian assumption that territorial unions, like political parties, come and go. Canada evolved into independence from Britain over a long, mostly peaceful expanse of time. Newfoundland didn’t join Canada until 1949, and the people of Quebec very nearly voted to secede in 1995.
