On a map of the United States color-coded by party, big cities and university towns and a few regions with large immigrant and racial minority populations are a chain of Democratic islands in a Republican ocean. Similar patterns appear on maps of voting for Brexit in the UK and elections in continental Europe.

Steve Sailer has a modest proposal.
One of the great mysteries of recent years is the exact rank ordering of the Intersectional Pyramid of Privilege. We know that it was invented to elevate black women over black men and white women. And it goes without saying that straight white men are at the bottom.
But what about more subtle questions like how does a Muslim immigrant straight man from a fairly white-adjacent place like Malaysia match up with a Jewish lesbian from Park Slope? Who wins?

Zman does some ‘splainin’.
The white American Progressive has always imagined society as a fully enclosed community, that is judged as a whole. A popular slogan among them is that “society is judged by how it treats it weakest members.” This is an explicit expression of communal judgement, which is the traveling partner of communal salvation. The white Progressive looks at society as an organism that moves forward as a whole. If some parts lag behind, the whole thing slows to a halt.
Further, the white Progressive believes in the unitary reformer. That is, the reformer is not just focused on one area of society, but the whole of society. Even if their efforts are in one area, those efforts support the whole community. A reform effort that does not promise to move the whole of society forward is of no interest. For white Progressive reformers, society is the flock and they are the shepherds. Anything that threatens their effort to guard and guide the flock must be eliminated.
It is this spatial understanding of the world that helps explain these largely symbolic attacks on the Second Amendment. In the hive mind of the white Progressive, people who own guns are outside the domain of the righteous. Therefore, they must be marginalized from society. Much in the same way they anathematized smoking, white Progressives seek to make owning a gun disqualifying. Symbolically, these measures are aimed at putting gun rights outside the whole of society.

The Other McCain blows the whistle.
There was a mass shooting Sunday night in Kansas City in which one woman was killed and 15 other people were injured. Three of the injured victims were listed in critical condition Monday. Mass shootings have become part of propaganda campaign by Democrats and the media, who seek to blame President Trump for these crimes — a “climate of hate” supposedly inspired by the White House. However, not every mass shooting lends itself to this political narrative, and so CNN viewers will not be getting 24/7 coverage of the Kansas City shooting….
…
If more than a dozen people had been shot by an “alt-right” Trump supporter, CNN would be airing hourly updates, with politicians and pundits being asked to weigh in on the “climate of hate” that allegedly caused the mass shooting. However, when an angry dope dealer opens fire because people are cutting in front of him in the line to get into the club after the Chiefs won a trip to the Super Bowl? That’s just local news.

John Derbyshire speaks truth to power.
Disparate Impact Theory is a key principle in our ruling ideology. It has the authority of, for example, the U.S. Supreme Court [U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Fair Housing Disparate Impact Principle, National Low Income Housing Coalition, June 29, 2015]. You might think that these disproportions could possibly be caused by Sun People actually jaywalking, turnstile-jumping, or acting up in class more than Ice People.
But if you do think that, you’d be wise to keep quiet about it. That’s crimethink.

Fifty years ago, housing was affordable everywhere in the country. The 1970 census found that the statewide ratio of median home prices to median family incomes was greater than 3.0 only in Hawaii (where it was 3.04). Price-to-income ratios were under 2.5 in every other state, and under 2.2 in California, New York, and other states that today are considered unaffordable.

It’s difficult to discern just what these ‘protesters’ think they’re going to accomplish. These aren’t the poor people of the world; it takes significant cash to even get to Davos. Presumably indulging in such theatrics, yet another case of ‘Look at me! Look at me!’, gives them a warm and fuzzy feeling — but the whole ‘I guess we told them!’ attitude is very much disconnected from the obvious reaction of the people being protested, which is more on the order of ‘don’t get any of this stuff on your shoes’.

Since there was no violence what so ever at the gun rights rally in Richmond, Virginia on Monday, CBS Evening News apparently decided to make-up some fake news and claim there was. As fill-in anchor Maurice DuBois began discussing the event, he falsely claimed there was “more than a week” of “violence” leading up to the rally. But back in reality, there wasn’t.
The only violence I saw was the violence of the ‘media’ against Trump.

One of the many odd things about the New York Times‘s “1619 Project” on slavery is that Martin Luther King Jr is barely mentioned (ditto Frederick Douglass). This omission may not be accidental, since both Douglass and King found sources for the remedy of slavery inside the American founding that today’s left wishes to repudiate completely. It will be a curious thing to see whether and how the 1619 Project appears in any of today’s observances of MLK’s birthday (or whether, in the fullness of time, there will be a push to rename MLK Day for someone or something else).

Yuval Levin’s new book — available for presale on Amazon; released tomorrow — argues that we are living through a social crisis.
Duh. If all it takes to write a book is to wake up and look around, we’re all in clover.
Levin, my colleague at AEI, focuses on the important role of institutions. He writes that public trust in institutions is commonly undermined by abuses of power. That isn’t our era’s unique problem.
Institutions are only as good as the people who man them. If an institution is full of corrupt power-hungry sociopaths, all the paper guarantees in the world will not keep it from going to Hell.
This is what has motivated the proglodyte ‘march through the institutions’ that has been proceeding successfully during all of my adult life.

The New York City Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA), a police union representing the city’s active and retired sergeants, blamed Mayor Bill de Blasio for the death of a 92-year-old woman.
A 92-year-old woman, Maria Fuentes, was sexually assaulted and murdered on the streets of NYC earlier in January. The man suspected of killing her, Reeaz Khan, is an illegal alien who had been arrested by the New York Police Department in November 2019, but was released and never handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because of the city’s strict sanctuary policy.

ZMan blows the whistle.
Today is the big pro-gun rally in Richmond Virginia. The rally is in response to the gun grabbing proposals by the newly ascendant Democrat party in the state. For the first time in a long time, Democrats gained control of all three branches of government in the last election and immediately set about implementing their fantasy agenda. Their first order of business was a series of vindictive, retributive proposals aimed at the normal population of the state, starting with guns and gun owners.
What’s going on in Virginia is a glimpse of what is coming for the country as a whole as we descend into the multicultural paradise. Virginia was a solidly normal state over the last seventy years. The politics were usually uneventful. Most issues were controlled at the local level. The state government was limited and usually run by the sorts of people, who thought that was a good thing. Once in a while a colorful governor would get his name in the paper, but otherwise politics was sober minded.
Decades of immigration have done to Virginia what it did to California, with the addition of massive Federal growth in Northern Virginia. Manufacturing and agricultural concerns have championed the importation of millions from Central America. Government has imported people from all over the country into Northern Virginia. The result has been the same sort of political shift we saw in California. The sprawling urban areas control state politics, which means the Left controls politics.

Today very few people know that national socialists are just another branch of socialism. They lack the ‘inter prefix’. That’s all. Hitler was a socialist. He admired Mussolini, who also was a socialist. Mussolini was congratulated by Lenin himself when he took over the Italian government. A lot of Nazis and Fascists admired the Roosevelt administration. The feelings were mutual: the US Democrats of the day admired the Nazis and the Fascists. Hitler was particularly impressed by the racial policies of the Democrat party and its Jim Crow laws. He based his Nuremberg laws on those laws. Eugenics were thought up by Democrats, and ‘improved’ by the Nazis. Hitler was Man of the Year 1938 in Time Magazine. On the other side of the pond Mussolini was greatly admired as the guy who made the trains run on time. Socialism really works, and it rules!

Adolfo Cardenas smiles faintly at the memory of traveling with his 14-year-old son from Honduras to the U.S.-Mexico border in only nine days, riding buses and paying a smuggler $6,000 to ensure passage through highway checkpoints.
Father and son walked about 10 minutes in Arizona’s stifling June heat before surrendering to border agents. Instead of being released with paperwork to appear in immigration court in Dallas, where Cardenas hopes to live with a cousin, they were bused more than an hour to wait in the Mexican border city of Mexicali.
“It was a surprise. I never imagined this would happen,” Cardenas, 39, said while waiting at a Mexicali migrant shelter for his fifth court appearance in San Diego, on Jan. 24.

Federal authorities are turning to a new tactic in the escalating conflict over New York City’s so-called sanctuary policies, issuing four “immigration subpoenas” to the city for information about inmates wanted for deportation.
“This is not a request — it’s a demand,” Henry Lucero, a senior U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official, told The Associated Press. “This is a last resort for us. Dangerous criminals are being released every single day in New York.”
