Americans Murdered in Mexico

5th November 2019

Read it.

Three mothers and at least six children with Utah ties were killed Monday in Mexico, according to the victims’ families.

Three other children suffered bullet wounds, said Lafe Langford Jr., a relative of some of the victims. He said doctors from across the Mexican state of Sonora were coming to help, though they would prefer to fly the wounded and others to the United States.

“We can’t get a helicopter or any airplanes or airlifts,” Langford said, “and it’s going to be at least a six-hour journey to El Paso or Tucson.”

Scott Adams is fond of pointing out that Mexico has lost control of their border areas near the United States, which are now effectively a narco-state.

Planning for an Unattainable Fantasy

5th November 2019

The Antiplanner peeks behind the curtain.

Austin is one of the fastest-growing cities in America, and the city of Austin and Austin’s transit agency, Capital Metro, have a plan for dealing with all of the traffic that will be generated by that growth: assume that a third of the people who now drive alone to work will switch to transit, bicycling, walking, or telecommuting by 2039. That’s right up there with planning for dinner by assuming that food will magically appear on the table the same way it does in Hogwarts.

Austin, like most urban areas in Texas, is a Blue pustule on the otherwise rosy-Red cheek of a great state. Presumably concentrating all of the crazy in certain locations allows the rest of us to go about our business in peace.

What’s Driving Chicago’s Political Dysfunction

5th November 2019

Read it.

Chicago is known for its deep dish pizza, skyscrapers, and lively sports scene. Unfortunately, it’s also known for high crime, fiscal woes, and political dysfunction. Other major cities have reformed their political system over time, but not Chicago. The city remains stuck with an outdated political model where the mayor is essentially king, making it harder to address long-term problems. Austin Berg, who has co-authored a book about this that explains how Chicago can finally break free from its past, explains what’s going on.

California’s ‘Woke’ Prop 47 Doomed Cities With Crime Rings and Theft

5th November 2019

Since the passage of the infamous Prop 47 five years ago, then marketed by California Democrats as the “Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act,” theft has increased across the state, as organized crime rings have transformed ordinary shoplifting into a lucrative and sophisticated operation. It’s likely no coincidence that San Francisco now has the highest rate of property crime of America’s twenty largest cities.

The Unchanging Principles of Conservatism Defined

4th November 2019

Read it.

This is an attempt by the Heritage Foundation to update the classic Sharon Statement formulated 60 years ago at Bill Buckley’s place in Sharon CT as a cornerstone document for the Young Americans for Freedom.

Across the years there have been many attempts, of which this is only the latest, to convert the conservative perspective into an ‘ism’, i.e. an ideology with a doctrine of faith, a political program, and a desired end-state toward which all adherents are supposed to work.

The problem with such attempts is that ‘conservatism’ isn’t an ideology, like socialism or fascism, but rather an aspect of ones personality, a way of looking at the world and its activities; hence any search for the ‘unchanging principles’ of ‘conservatism’ is doomed to failure, and such laundry-lists as these are anything but — they devolve into time-and-location-dependent opinions that certainly arise out of the reactions of conservative people to current events but cannot legitimately be termed ‘unchanging principles’.

So why do they thrive? Because conservatives, consciously or not, realize that ‘conservative principles’ are time-and-location-dependent and hence give rise to different appreciations of what is or is not ‘conservative at any particular time or place. Hence these ‘definitions’ are (a) a pre-emptive defense against criticism by other putative ‘conservatives’ that the defining group Aren’t Really Conservative and (b) a stick with which to beat other purportedly ‘conservative’ groups that the defining group think have strayed from the True Faith.

This has certainly happened historically — the defenestration of the John Birch Society and the Ayn Rand Objectivists from The Conservative Movement by Bill Buckley and the National Review crowd are famous examples.  Fringe groups are cut off from the desired core of True Believers because unbelievers might think that the Faithful are actually tainted by beliefs that might be derogatory. This is the basis of the impulse for everybody and his dog to call their enemies ‘Nazis’, which they rarely are but which is a useful tarbrush to use in modern political discourse. So, like the poor, definitions of what is or is not True Conservatism will always be with us.

MIT Device Cools With No Electricity or Moving Parts – Even Under the Blazing Sun

4th November 2019

Read it.

The device, which has no moving parts, works by a process called radiative cooling. It blocks incoming sunlight to keep from heating it up, and at the same time efficiently radiates infrared light — which is essentially heat — that passes straight out into the sky and into space, cooling the device significantly below the ambient air temperature.

The key to the functioning of this simple, inexpensive system is a special kind of insulation, made of a polyethylene foam called an aerogel. This lightweight material, which looks and feels a bit like marshmallow, blocks and reflects the visible rays of sunlight so that they don’t penetrate through it. But it’s highly transparent to the infrared rays that carry heat, allowing them to pass freely outward.

Surface Forces: An American Tragedy

4th November 2019

Read it.

The U.S. Navy has encountered still more delays in getting the first of three new DDG-1000 class stealth destroyers into service. The current date for being fully operational is September 2021. The delays stem from continued efforts to deal with a list of 320 “serious deficiencies” compiled after the navy completed sea trials in early 2016. All this increases costs and those costs for completing the ship have risen for 11 years in a row. Those unanticipated (but not unexpected) increased costs have totaled $4 billion since 2010. At this point the total cost for the DDG-1000 program will be over $23 billion, meaning each of the three DDG-1000s to enter service will cost about $8 billion. This includes $10 billion in research development, which was to be spread over 32 DDG-1000s. Even so that would have been $312 million per ship. Among its many failures the most notable one was the inability to get its two 155mm guns operational. The DDG-1000 was designed mainly to provide gunfire support for marines but technology passed the DDG-1000 by in that department. That, plus cost overruns means the DDG-1000s will enter service with the two 155mm guns still there but not operational. Sad but very symbolic of the DDG-1000 project and U.S. Navy ship building efforts since the 1980s.

Put this with the ongoing problems with the Ford class aircraft carriers and the Navy is looking pretty shabby.

The Money Farmers: How Oligarchs and Populists Milk the E.U. for Millions

3rd November 2019

Read it.

Every year, the 28-country bloc pays out $65 billion in farm subsidies intended to support farmers around the Continent and keep rural communities alive. But across Hungary and much of Central and Eastern Europe, the bulk goes to a connected and powerful few. The prime minister of the Czech Republic collected tens of millions of dollars in subsidies just last year. Subsidies have underwritten Mafia-style land grabs in Slovakia and Bulgaria.

Europe’s farm program, a system that was instrumental in forming the European Union, is now being exploited by the same antidemocratic forces that threaten the bloc from within. This is because governments in Central and Eastern Europe, several led by populists, have wide latitude in how the subsidies, funded by taxpayers across Europe, are distributed — even as the entire system is shrouded in secrecy.

Past Is the Future

3rd November 2019

ZMan takes a long view.

As a practical matter, Rubin is correct. America is a propositional nation, in that citizenship is now entirely meaningless to the native born. It has value to the millions pouring over the border every year, but to the people who hold US citizenship, it is a stock certificate for a company that no longer exists. Stock certificate is really not the right way to put it, as it is more like a debt certificate. Every year that tax on people holding citizenship goes up, as the land gets enriched with the dregs of the earth.

As you no doubt are aware, the SRA was developed by the ONC in collaboration with HHS OCR, and is required by CMS to be sure that your EMR complies with HIPAA. It is far too complex to be understood by mere doctors, so I pay a consulting firm to submit the proper regulatory paperwork to the proper TLA’s (Three Letter Acronyms) on my behalf. A cynic might think that it’s not that it’s complex, but rather that it was designed to require third party consultants, to help the government control healthcare. But that would be very, very cynical. So never mind.

How Sheryl Sandberg Went From Feminist Hero to Total Sellout

3rd November 2019

Read it.

Sheryl Sandberg, once the human face of Facebook, the would-be feminist warrior whose “Lean In” philosophy was meant not just to reshape Big Tech but the American workplace and feminism itself, has been revealed as just another digital overlord.

The façade began crumbling last November, when The New York Times published a devastating exposé depicting Sandberg as the likely architect of an anti-Semitic smear campaign against George Soros in the wake of his attack on Facebook and Google at the 2018 World Economic Forum.

That story, of course, followed the revelations of rampant and promiscuous data sharing, the turgid response to ethnic cleansing in Myanmar — largely incited by false posts on the platform — and, of course, the company’s role in allowing Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Yet Sandberg is still COO of Facebook. Why?

Deepfakes Paranoia Considered Pointless

3rd November 2019

Read it.

The concern is that AI has gotten so good that we’ll be able to create videos of important people saying all sorts of nutty things, which will lead to a total breakdown in our ability to trust important institutions. The problem here is that world leaders already say incredibly nutty things. Making a fake video of Donald Trump saying something outrageous is superfluous, like photoshopping a picture of Jeff Bezos so he’s holding a twenty dollar bill.

The other problem is that the media suffer from an intellectual autoimmune disorder, and relentlessly hype up minor misstatements into full-blown hysteria. If you’re at all partisan, you can think of examples of The Other Guys doing this. Every educated person knows that “cling to guns and religion” was a sympathetic remark from a churchgoer, except of course for the educated people who know that Mitt Romney’s “47%” line was a rhetorical flourish about people who pay no Federal income taxes.

Super-rich Prepare to Leave UK ‘Within Minutes’ if Labour Wins Election

3rd November 2019

The Guardian.

Lawyers and accountants for the UK’s richest families said they had been deluged with calls from millionaire and billionaire clients asking for help and advice on moving countries, shifting their fortunes offshore and making early gifts to their children to avoid the Labour leader’s threat to tax all inheritances above £125,000.

The advisers said a Corbyn-led government was viewed as a far greater threat to the wealth and quality of life of the richest 1% than a hard Brexit.

Geoffrey Todd, a partner at the law firm Boodle Hatfield, said many of his clients had already put plans in place to transfer their wealth out of the country within minutes if Corbyn is elected.

And who could blame them?

Trouble for the Anti-White, Anti-Male, Anti-Heterosexual, Anti-American Party

2nd November 2019

The Other McCain lays it out.

Why did Hillary Clinton lose in 2016? It wasn’t just because working-class white men didn’t vote for her — a majority (53%) of white women also voted for Trump — but also because Hillary failed to generate the level of turnout among black voters that Obama got in the two previous elections. In other words, after Obama, some black voters have decided they won’t vote for white Democrats any more. That’s why candidates like Beto O’Rourke and Kirsten Gillibrand never caught on this cycle, and it’s why the likely nomination of Elizabeth Warren in 2020 will almost certainly be a disaster for Democrats. Does anyone think black voters are going to be excited about the fake Cherokee Harvard professor? In a desperate (and misguided) effort to win in 2020, Democrats and their media allies have doubled-down on identity politics, with feminists promoting an angry anti-male message and LGBTQ activists promoting insulting and offensive rhetoric against heterosexuals. Democrats are now the “Drag Queen Story Hour” party and the Angry Fat Woman party, and I don’t think that message will resonate with Middle America.
