Hunter Biden is the ultimate fail-son, or black sheep.
For those who are unfamiliar with the term, it has emerged in recent years to describe the spoiled, sloppy and clumsily power-hungry offspring of powerful individuals. Hunter Biden is more infamous for his often drug-fueled antics, and the brief and embarrassingly public romance he shared with his deceased brother’s widow, than he is for being a successful businessman. But now his business career has been exposed for what it truly is: Foreign players hoping to use the younger Biden as a backdoor connection to the White House, and the American political elite.

Turns out, humans aren’t really designed to stand for long periods with feet flat on the floor. This contributes to stress on the spine, and you can feel it in your lower back. A foot rail allows us to redistribute the load on our feet—first one foot, then the other—and alter the tilt of our spines. “Bartenders were probably the first ergonomics experts on the planet,” write the authors of Deskbound, a 2016 book about the hazards of the sedentary life. “A standing-height drinking table that you can lean on, with a place to rest your foot? Genius.” Also genius: A foot rail is not only better for your back, but helps you cut a better figure. Standing flat-footed renders everyone a bit oafish; raising one foot results in a more rakish profile.

National Review stalwart Jonah Goldberg this week announced the creation of The Dispatch, a site for conservatives who are skeptical of the president, which will compete with The Bulwark, launched earlier this year by former Weekly Standard co-founder Bill Kristol and commentator Charlie Sykes.
“I’M the Real Conservative!” “No, I’M the Real Conservative!”
Goldberg and Dispatch CEO Steve Hayes, in interviews with POLITICO, insisted their new site won’t be reflexively anti-Trump, but guided by principles over party.
And if you believe that one, they’ll tell you another one.
“I’ve never given a rat’s ass about being a Republican,” said Goldberg, who will be The Dispatch’s editor-in-chief.
I believe it. They’re including David French, which tells you everything you need to know. (Well, at least it gets French away from National Review….)

If these murders had been committed by a deranged white man, the story would be getting wall-to-wall coverage on CNN, the killer portrayed as a Trump-inspired perpetrator of a “hate crime.” But the suspect is an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, and so . . . crickets chirping.

Steve Sailer looks at the new JOKER movie.
With the shift in pop cultural hegemony from Old Americans to Ellis Island Americans, movies based on comic book superheroes, most of whom were dreamed up by American Jews from the 1930s into the 1960s, now fill the role once played by Westerns as Hollywood’s bread-and-butter genre. Writer-director Todd Phillips, who previously made comedies of masculine excess such as The Hangover and War Dogs, dreamed up a story that ingeniously merges the DC Universe, the Scorsese-verse, and the Trumpian present.

For Israeli intelligence organizations 2019 was a revealing year, literally. The Israeli government continued its policy of going public with the accomplishments of Mossad (foreign intelligence) and Shin Bet (domestic intelligence). Israel made it clear this year that these growing number disclosures over the past few years was done because it was felt this played an important role in deterring attacks. There was also the impact on foreign governments, and the enemy, because the disclosures made it clear what the enemy was up to and why international action was necessary. These disclosures, especially the identity (and photos of) foreign terrorist leaders reinforced the personal danger these foreign terrorist leaders placed themselves in. Israel has gone after terrorist leaders in the past, usually after a particularly gruesome attack, especially when a lot of civilians were killed.

Massachusetts Senator and 2020 hopeful Elizabeth Warren was no stranger to spreading tall tales about her life, just look at her false claims of being Native American. On Monday, The Washington Free Beacon caught her in another apparent lie. This time it was about allegedly being fired from a teaching gig for being “visibly pregnant”. The broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) were so obsessed with President Trump’s impeachment that they failed to report it on their flagship morning and evening newscasts.
Not really news, but a useful reminder.

“Where the streets have no name”, the first song on u2’s blockbuster 1987 album, “Joshua Tree”, begins with 40 seconds of ambient noise. A guitar arpeggio enters and accelerates into the driving rhythm of the drums and bass that arrive around 1:10. Nearly two minutes pass before Bono breathes the first lyrics. Such leisurely intros are no more, says Justin Kalifowitz of Downtown Music Publishing, a rights manager. Streaming platforms like Spotify have reshaped the music business—and pop songs. The gist of it: songwriters now get to the good stuff sooner.
Well, if it means less ‘artiste’ crap from rockers, I’m fur it. They need to get back to the ‘it has a good beat and you can dance to it’ roots of rock & roll.

Celebrity scandal is as old as the tabloids, but the type of protection Spotted will offer was hardly used even a decade ago. Under the studio system, the financiers were in control — their stars’ transgressions easier to cover up, their contracts easier to tear up. True outrages like the Fatty Arbuckle case were relatively rare, and when they happened, the machine smoothed things over and rolled on. But today’s stars are the machine, commanding millions in endorsement deals and the lion’s share of indie-film budgets and carrying billions in market value on the backs of their reputations.

All told, the U.S. government spends $20 billion annually on farm subsidies, with approximately 39 percent of all farms receiving some sort of subsidy. For comparison, the oil industry gets about $4.6 billion annually and annual housing subsidies total another $15 billion. A significant portion of this $20 billion goes not to your local family farm, but to Big Aggie.
(Note that this $20 billion annual farm subsidy figure doesn’t take into account the 30+ years of ethanol subsidies to the corn industry nor export subsidies to U.S. farmers issued by the USDA.)
The government never properly explains why this is. Certainly small farmers are growing their crops at enormous risk. However, it’s not clear that agriculture is any different than other high-risk industries – especially because the United States is blessed with some of the most fertile farmland in the world, and a highly skilled labor force.

The underlying anxiety here is that the Army has tried and failed repeatedly to modernize its Reagan-era arsenal over the past 30 years — the problem Army Futures Command was created to fix. Armored fighting vehicle programs, above all replacements for the Bradley troop carrier, have been particularly fraught. The Future Combat Systems family of vehicles, which included a lightweight Bradley replacement, was canceled in 2009, while the Ground Combat Vehicle, a better-armored and correspondingly heavier Bradley replacement, was cancelled in 2014. The Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle is the Army’s third swing at this ball.
Maybe the Russians have something we could buy. They don’t seem to be having these problems.

Get woke, go broke.
Multiple online publishers have made large reductions in editorial staff over the last few years — and one factor seems to permeate many different newsrooms that have faced this peril — unions for journalists.
Indeed, newsrooms in New York City and Washington, D.C. may be the last place many Americans think of when they think of workers’ unions, but in fact, many unions can be found right there. Over the last half decade or so, media staffers, especially at online news sites, have made an effort to unionize their newsrooms, and in many cases, succeeded.
Yet many of these unions were not able to stave off the looming threat of job losses. Indeed, as news outlets juggle driving traffic, attracting advertisers, and keeping the money flowing, many have had to make reductions in staff to keep their company on track.
Unions grew up in industries where workers were readily replaceable because they were unskilled or semi-skilled and so had no market power vis-a-vis employers. Many of the ‘union drives’ these days are in technology companies where unionization technically ought not to apply, which suggests either than the skills involved aren’t all that special or that employees have actually bought the whole socialist fantasy history that their equally left-wing teachers have been packing into them since kindergarten. To such people, reality bites — and bites hard.

Over the years, senior Navy weapons developers have explained some of the key areas of modernization focus; these include new coating materials to make the submarines stealthier, new antennas for longer-range, more accurate undersea surveillance missions and new “quieting” engine propulsion technology, among other things.
All of these technologies, in fact, already exist in the USS South Dakota attack submarine — the most advanced submarine ever to be delivered to the Navy. The new boat, which is now operational, began as a prototype, test-bed platform to evolve these new technologies. What all of these USS South Dakota innovations also amount to is that, Hanson said, they are informing both Block V as well as current conceptual discussions now underway regarding a future generation Virginia-class submarine now only in early conceptual development – called Block VI. Block VI, according to Hanson, is not likely to begin to materialize until the mid 2020s.

Let’s begin with the primitive drones. These are devices which, according to one Russian military expert, roughly need a 486 CPU, about 1MB of RAM, 1GB of harddisk space and some (now extremely cheap) sensors to capture the signals from the US GPS, the Russian GLONASS or both (called “GNSS”). In fact, the “good terrorists” in Syria, financed, assisted and trained by the “Axis of Kindness” (USA/KSA/Israel) have been attacking the Russian base in Khmeimim with swarms of such drones for years. According to the commander of the air defenses of Khmeimin, over 120(!) drones were shot down or disabled by Russian air defenses in just the last two years. Obviously, the Russians know something that some “Axis of Kindness” does not.
