The most popular article I have ever written, in terms of views, has been, by far, “10 Places that Should Join the U.S.,” a short piece at RealClearHistory pining for an enlarged geographic area under the American constitution.
He makes a good case for some of them, a very poor case for others.

There is an odd hysteria among the chattering classes about the rise of AI and robotics. Personally I WANT rote, repetitive work done by automated machines…they don’t get bored and they don’t get tired, so why not use them whenever possible.
I do not fear the Robot Apocalypse, since I am sufficiently above the mean in intelligence that I do not fear for my livelihood, and I have no children for whom to feel anxious. In that respect I am the perfect libertarian.
So be of good cheer. If a robot hasn’t replaced you yet, the chances are that it won’t before you’re too old to care.

Freeberg nails it.
Bottom-lining it, liberals have a real problem with learning from experience. They can’t grasp that a symbol of something might be different from the actual thing. “Education,” to a liberal, is exactly that and it can’t mean anything different…”ANTIFA” must be anti-fascist, they’re entirely unswayed by the accumulated evidence that the group is, in fact, fascist. And it’s not just because they sympathize with them ideologically, although there is that. The big problem is that the name says anti-fascist. That it might actually mean something different from that, doesn’t register.

Amidst the ocean of publicity, Rush Limbaugh decided to do something. Consulting with wife Kathryn the two quickly came up with a T-shirt bearing the Betsy Ross flag. Beneath the flag were the words: “Stand Up For Betsy Ross!” Beneath that it read simply “The Rush Limbaugh Show” with Rush’s name in signature form. Proceeds would benefit the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the late Mr. Siller a Brooklyn fireman who lost his life saving others during the 9/11 attack in New York.
And suddenly? Suddenly The Rush Limbaugh Show Store was inundated with requests for the shirt. Tens of thousands — say again tens of thousands — were sold within minutes — minutes! — of Rush’s announcement on his show. Rush was astounded at the massive, instant response. I asked him about this and he told me the shirt had on the spot become the Rush store’s “hottest selling item. We had to re-order after 5 hours yesterday and we do NOT do small quantities.”
Rush is a dab hand at recognizing a sales opportunity out of left-wing cluelessness.

The mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, said that the city was to ban ICE from accessing police databases in the city, according to Breitbart.
The news comes after reports of potential raids set to take place in more than 10 U.S. cities on Sunday.
The mayor said about the city’s police: “They will not team up with ICE to detain any resident. We have also cut off ICE access from any CPD databases and that will remain permanent. Chicago is and will always be a welcoming city that will never tolerate ICE tearing our families apart.”

The FBI is investigating a secret society of tattooed deputies in East Los Angeles as well as similar gang-like groups elsewhere within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, multiple people familiar with the inquiry said.
The federal probe follows allegations of beatings and harassment by members of the Banditos, a group of deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Department’s East L.A. station who brand themselves with matching tattoos of a skeleton outfitted with a sombrero, bandolier and pistol. The clique’s members are accused by other deputies of using gang-like tactics to recruit young Latino deputies into their fold and retaliating against those who rebuff them.

Maryland and D.C. officials sue President Trump, alleging he’s violating the Constitution’s Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses by maintaining an ownership interest in the Trump Organization while president. That “global business empire”—which includes the Trump International Hotel in D.C. (in which the president has a 76% interest), the Trump towers in Manhattan, and income from the international distribution of The Apprentice—provides him with millions of dollars from foreign and local governments. Fourth Circuit: Maryland and the District lack standing to bring this “extraordinary” suit against the president in either his official capacity or his individual capacity. (With some fun interlocutory appeal twists for those interested in such things.)

It’s not just Republicans (“Fascists!”) and Trump (“Hitler!”) who have been targeted by this campaign of screeching hysteria. Under the Bank Secrecy Act of 1970, banks must report any cash transactions greater than $10,000. But if someone frequently deposits or withdraws their cash in amounts under $10,000, the IRS could seize it for “structuring.” Even though their money was earned legitimately and despite the fact that they were never charged with a crime, in 2012, the IRS seized nearly $63,000 from Randy and more than $446,000 from Jeff. It took years of litigation and high-profile coverage before they won their money back.
…
According to a 2017 report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, the IRS “enforced structuring laws primarily against legal source funds and compromised the rights of some individuals and businesses.” Out of a sample 278 structuring cases, in 91% of those investigations, TIGTA “did not find evidence that the structured funds came from an illegal source or involved any other illegal activity.”

Raymond Ibrahim is the author, most recently, of Sword and Scimitar: Fourteen Centuries of War Between Islam and the West, published last year with a foreword by Victor Davis Hanson. Ibrahim is the Judith Friedman Rosen Writing Fellow at the Middle East Forum and a frequent contributor to the Gatestone site; his Gatestone columns are compiled here. He knows whereof he writes.
Ibrahim had planned to lecture on his book at the Army War College on June 19. In a new installment of an old story, however, his lecture was canceled due to “CAIR-induced hysteria” presenting him—a native Arabic speaker of Egyptian/Middle Eastern descent—as a “racist” and “white nationalist” who is out to incite American soldiers to murder Muslims.

Neither of Kamala Harris’s parents are Americans. Her mother is from India and her father is from Jamaica. Harris spent most of her childhood in Canada. She thus has little in common with most black people in the United States whose ancestors were slaves here. Before this fact became controversial, it was referenced by such “far-right” personalities as . . . CNN’s Don Lemon.

During a summer vacation season marked by long security lines and record-setting air traffic, it is easy to overlook a trend in U.S. ground travel that is winning converts from those who would otherwise fly: the rapid expansion of bus lines offering first- and business-class service on short-hop routes. These carriers, many of which have onboard attendants, snack and beverage service, and low-density seating, are a far cry from the conventional intercity bus lines that most business travelers are loath to use. Most offer frequent traveler programs and reserved seats like airlines. They also offer more spacious “2 x 1” seating (one seat and two seats on opposite sides of the aisle).

In January, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, tasked his Special Adviser for the Prevention of Genocide, Adama Dieng, to “present a global plan of action against hate speech and hate crimes on a fast-track basis”. Speaking at a press conference about the UN’s challenges for 2019, Guterres maintained, “The biggest challenge that governments and institutions face today is to show that we care — and to mobilize solutions that respond to people’s fears and anxieties with answers…”
One of those answers, Guterres appeared to suggest, is shutting down free speech.

Nearly 100 nuclear reactors in the US provide about 20% of the country’s electricity. While these reactors generate practically no greenhouse gases, companies are planning to shut down more and more of them. At the current clip, none may be operational by 2050, according to a 2017 government study.
The reasons for these reactor shutdowns are numerous and complicated; politics is playing a role, as is the rise of wind and solar energy. But current US regulations are to blame, too, since they make implementing upgrades to aging reactors — in particular new electronics that would improve safety, reliability, and longevity — hard and expensive to do. Meanwhile, supplies of approved analog parts are waning and their costs increasing.
That’s why the announcement that Indiana’s Purdue University Reactor Number One (PUR-1) has swapped out all of its dated analog controls for modern digital ones may represent an important turning point.
