LOL: No One’s Accepting National Review’s Newest Partial Apology So They Decide to Forgive Themselves Instead

22nd January 2019

Ace of Spades does not suffer fools gladly. (Or at all, really.)

National Review is tired of waiting for people to accept their begrudging, compelled apologies, so they’re accepting their own apology now.

You’re welcome.

Racist Black Nationalism and the Covington Controversy

22nd January 2019

Read it.

Why has the conduct of the black nationalists escaped notice while that of the Covington students has been unfairly denounced? I think it’s due, in large part, to the identity politics hierarchy. Black women (though under challenge) remain at the top. Black men aren’t far behind. White Catholic boys are firmly entrenched at the bottom.

Hos for Blows

22nd January 2019

It’s no question that Saturday Night Live has just about completely lost its ability to be funny. If you’re still scratching your head as to why the once loveable sketch comedy has fallen so far off, just look to the behavior of its creative staff. On Monday SNL writer Sarah Beattie posted a crude Twitter status offering lewd sex acts for anyone willing to harm Nicolas Sandmann, the Catholic teen accused of racism for merely standing in front of a triggered native American man.

Authority Figures

22nd January 2019

Kevin Williamson reminds us of some inconvenient truth.

David Klinghoffer scoffs at the notion of “passively allowing our views to be determined by others.” It has been a while, but, if memory serves, that is more or less how I learned algebra. Physics and chemistry, too.

Where we disagree is this: I do not believe that lawyers and novelists have anything of real value to contribute to our knowledge of evolution, and I have not seen any evidence that they do, however committed and well-intentioned these amateurs may be.

Racial Dystopia

22nd January 2019

David Cole explores an interesting question.

The point is, there’s no shortage of writers who’ve envisioned a future in which sex, sexism, and other gender-related issues continue to exist.

But you know what’s conspicuously missing from the dystopia genre? Race. No one likes to write stories of a future world in which race is still a thing. Why? Why is it easy to believe that the battle of the sexes will continue after a nuclear war or a devastating plague, but racial tensions will somehow vanish? It’s the Lathe of Heavenprinciple, the belief that in the future we’ll still have every current social ill except racism (in The Lathe of Heaven, author Ursula Le Guin presents an ashy future in which all humans have become the color gray).

Can You Tell an Author’s Identity By Looking at Punctuation Alone?

22nd January 2019

Read it.

Recently, Calhoun’s inquiry piqued the interest of researchers in the United Kingdom, who wondered if it was possible to identify an author from his or her punctuation alone.

For decades, linguists have been able to use the quirks of written texts to pinpoint the author. The process, called stylometric analysis or stylometry, has dozens of legal and academic applications, helping researchers authenticate anonymous works of literature and even nab criminals like the Unabomber. But it usually focuses on an author’s word choices and grammar or the length of his or her sentences. Until now, punctuation has been largely ignored.

But according to a recent paper led by Alexandra N. M. Darmon of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, an author’s use of punctuation can be extremely revealing. Darmon’s team assembled nearly 15,000 documents from 651 different authors and “de-worded” each text. “Is it possible to distinguish literary genres based on their punctuation sequences?” the researchers asked. “Do the punctuation styles of authors evolve over time?”

Apparently, yes.

Naming Names: Tucker Slams Media Folks Who Attacked Catholic Teens

22nd January 2019

Read it.

The liberal media had been left reeling after a weekend of spreading misinformation and smears against a group of innocent Catholic high school students who were being harassed in front of the Lincoln Memorial. At the start of the Monday’ edition of his show, on Fox News Channel, Tucker Carlson shamed those who jumped to the conclusions that fit into their narrative. Naming names, Carlson also called out those on the right who did the same thing.

Nice to find at least one person willing to do the heavy lifting on this.

22nd January 2019

Gee, I wonder why?

Experts quoted in the story ascribe the flight to several reasons, not the least of which is the reduction of the local and state tax deduction. People with the kind of wealth we’re talking about often have more than one home and can go live in Florida where the taxes are more manageable. Financial advisors are recommending their high net worth clients to move out of state if possible to avoid the tax burden and many are taking their advice.

Useful idiots, Kristof edition

19th January 2019

Scott Johnson at Powerline does some fisking.

Lo these many years since the Russian Revolution and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the New York Times is still doing public relations for Communism. The most recent example — I find it almost unbelievable — is Nicholas Kristof’s January 18 Times column “Why Infants May Be More Likely to Die in America Than Cuba” (accessible here on Outline).

For those not aware of it, Outline (https://outline.com) offers a tool that, if you paste in a piece’s URL, will eliminate all the tedious persiflage and just give you the story in an easily readable form. It will also pierce many paywalls, such as that of the New York Times.

“Cuba has the Medicare of All that many Americans dream about” may be true in a sense, but this is so old and so lame. Kristof’s column is based on Cuba’s low infant mortality rate as reported. He acknowledges the gauzy veil of Cuban health care statistics yet he fails to get at the essential problems they raise. He is a fool for Communism. He promotes what Jay Nordlinger aptly derided as “The myth of Cuban health care” in his 2007 NR column on Michael Moore’s Sicko.

Jay noted that “Cuba’s infant-mortality rate remains respectable,” but put it in the context that Kristof failed to provide. Jay noted, for example, “if there is any sign of abnormality, any reason for concern — the pregnancy is ‘interrupted.’ That is the going euphemism for abortion. The abortion rate in Cuba is sky-high, perversely keeping the infant-mortality rate down.” See also Katherine Hirschfeld’s case study below. The word “abortion” doesn’t appear in Kristof’s column.

Trump Brings Pelosi’s Multimillion-Dollar Vineyard Into Shutdown Fight

18th January 2019

Read it.

President Donald Trump brought up House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s multimillion-dollar vineyard Friday to criticize her for planning to travel out of the country during the shutdown after he banned her from using military aircraft for the trip Thursday.

“Why would Nancy Pelosi leave the Country with other Democrats on a seven day excursion when 800,000 great people are not getting paid,” Trump wrote on Twitter Friday. “Also, could somebody please explain to Nancy [and] her ‘big donors’ in wine country that people working on farms (grapes) will have easy access in!”

Pelosi and her husband own a California vineyard and mansion worth at least $5 million that brings in thousands of dollars in grape sales each year, according to TIME Inc.’s Money magazine. California’s “recruitment of agricultural guest workers has grown sevenfold” since 2011, and it ranks fifth among states hiring for foreign workers, reported The Los Angeles Times.
