Scientists have hailed the results of the world’s first gene therapy trial for blindness after 14 patients with one of the most common inherited forms of the disease experienced “significant” gains or arrested deterioration of their vision.

Oxford University researchers, working with the NHS, injected a virus containing a missing gene into the rear of the eyes of patients suffering from choroideremia.

Of the 12 who received the treatment without suffering any complications, all have demonstrated improved or maintained vision since having the injection, some as long as five years ago.

The protests liberals whipped up against Kavanaugh this weekend, on the other hand, revealed too much about their own weakness. Washington, D.C. is a majority Democratic city with a black majority. But the Democratic votes out there yelling about Kavanaugh were as white as any country club gathering of Republicans. They looked like a line of Starbucks patrons — Caucasian, professional, largely millennial, with earth tones and earnest expressions aplenty. Men and women wore the same fashionable glasses and more or less the same clothes. It was a Pumpkin Spice Riot.

Something the old paleocons recognized in the 1980’s, was that the new conservatism of Bill Buckley was doomed to fail, because it started from the premise that the current political arrangements were legitimate. Since the Left had defined those arrangements in the 20th century, it meant the New Right was going to become corrupted by its willingness to operate within the Progressives rules. For example, if you agree that segregation is evil, there are only a narrow set of policy positions you can support with regards to race.

That is, of course, exactly what happened. Instead of being a moral philosophy that stood in opposition to Progressivism, it became a foil. Conservatives were the controlled opposition, who gave legitimacy to left-wing ideas by opposing them and then ultimately embracing them. If you embrace the premise, you inevitably embrace the ends. The debate is about the middle part. It’s why conservatives have spent decades trying to accomplish the goals of the Left, without embracing the means of the Left.

Every time I ponder writing something long-form about politics, I find that ZMan has already written something on that topic that I agree with about 90%.

ATRANSGENDER lawyer has launched Britain’s first “deadnaming” case in the High Court against Father Ted’s screenplay writer after he referred to her using her birth name.

Stephanie Hayden is suing Graham Linehan, the co-writer of the popular comedy TV series, for defamation and harassment after he allegedly published a series of tweets “deliberately misgendering” her by using her previous male name, otherwise known as “deadnaming”.

Ms Hayden, who is legally female, said Mr Linehan “caused her distress” and that his actions constitute harassment, a misuse of private information, and were a “gross affront to her dignity as a woman”.

I spent the Jewish High Holidays this year attending services at Temple Micah on Wisconsin Avenue in Washington, DC, a congregation affiliated with the liberal Reform Movement. Its cognitive-elite-type members include prominent policy intellectuals, a lot of law degrees from Yale and Harvard, media types from the Washington Post, CNN, etc. And while they may disagree on whether Elizabeth Warren or Cory Booker would beat him on 2020, they all share one thing in common: they hate, like really hate, in a quasi-pathological way (you know what I mean) President Donald Trump and anyone and anything associated with him.

Say something nice about the American economy under Trump and you’ll get that ‘are-you-a-Nazi-or-something?’ kind-of-look from the ultra-progressive congregants who accept it as a given that the elderly grandfather of three little Jewish kids residing in nearby 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is ‘like Hitler’ (the more moderate members could live with the Mussolini or David Duke analogies).

Apparently American liberal Jews are on the verge of proclaiming Israeli Jews to be Nazis. Who knew?

Just as the congressional vote in 1846 on the so-called Wilmot Proviso revealed that the fault-line in American politics was about slavery, not party, the Kavanaugh nomination shows what American politics is, at heart, about. It is about “rights” and the entire system that arose in our lifetimes to confer them not through legislation but through court decisions: Roe v. Wade in 1973 (abortion), Regents v. Bakke in 1979 (affirmative action), Plyler v. Doe in 1982 (immigrant rights), and Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015 (gay marriage). The Democrats are the party of rights. As such, they are the party of the Supreme Court. You can see why Ted Kennedy claimed in a 1987 diatribe that the Yale law professor Robert Bork would turn the United States into a police state. For Democrats, an unfriendly Supreme Court is a threat to everything.

Something that has gone unremarked in the latest outburst of female hysteria is why these purple-faced rage-heads we see on television and on social media, call themselves survivors. The word turns up in all of their materials and their self-descriptions. It’s clear the word has taken on a spiritual meaning, imbue with sacred properties. The survivor, they insist, is incapable of error or dishonesty. We must not only believe survivors, we have to follow their orders. To do otherwise violates some unexplained, yet sacred code.

In Gaza (the smaller of the two Palestinian territories) Hamas, the Islamic terrorist group that has controlled the Palestinian enclave since 2007, has suffered another defeat in its most recent war with Israel. Once more Hamas thought it had it all figured out only to discover that the Israeli military superiority represented more than weapons and well trained troops. Defeat in the latest six month war was due to being outmaneuvered by Israeli tactics that exposed the weaknesses and ruthlessness of Hamas and left the rulers of Gaza much worse off than when they began. This time Hamas thought they could win the media war by encouraging civilians (via free food, publicity and cash payments for those injured or killed) to try and physically force their way through the security fence and into Israel. It didn’t work and so far over 150 Palestinians have died. One Israel has been killed, by a Hamas sniper using a long range 12.7mm Iranian sniper rifle. Hamas lost dozens of members, many of the promising young leaders, These men were in the crowds to urge the largely male (and teenage) force to keep going in the face of tear gas, rubber bullets and real bullets for the few who made it through the fence. This was all captured on video, from both sides, and it did not reflect well on Hamas, which lost more support from its few remaining Arab allies (and donors). This included Egypt, which also closed its border to Gaza as well as increasing efforts to find and destroy Hamas smuggling tunnels into Egypt.
