The opposition to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court justice has evolved from the merely desperate to the hilariously desperate. A good example of the latter can be seen in the July 10 New York magazine in which writer Ed Kilgore suggests that the Maine Democrats politically bribe Republican Senator Susan Collins with a promise by their state chairman to endorse her when she is up for re-election in 2020.
Perhaps I am old school enough to believe that a bribe should be given in its traditional form as cash wrapped inside a brown paper bag but Kilgore somehow thinks that his political bribe could work….
I must confess to having about as much respect for Senator Collins as Kilgore does, but this is a bit much.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the National Review crowd, but this is just too stupid for words.
Just because Trump says X doesn’t mean that X is true. Nordlinger and the other pearl-clutchers of the Establishment Right have this serious psychological defect that, coming from the right-wing think-tank/opinionator realm, they say what they mean and mean what they say; as a result, they think that anybody who isn’t a Lying Democrat (of which there be many) does (or at least ought to do) the same thing. That’s not Trump. For Trump, what he says is a tool, and any correspondence between what he says, and what actually is, may or may not exist. What Trump says is what he wants you to hear, and that’s all. If you take it for more than that, then you’re a fool and he will play you like Eric Clapton with a guitar.
Trump knows more about what’s going on than you or I or even (gasp) Jay Nordlinger. He has all of the intelligence apparatus of the President of the United States at his disposal. If he does something, there’s a reason for it, and that reason is likely to be far from obvious — so to look at the obvious and recoil is on a par with a cow changing direction because a cowboy is flapping a blanket at it. Nordlinger has locked down his membership in the herd, and I find it very distasteful that supposedly intelligent people are so easily duped.
Jay Nordlinger doesn’t want a real President; he wants somebody Righteous. Ronald Reagan was Righteous. George W. Bush was Righteous. Mitt Romney was Righteous. Nordlinger suffers from the same disease as every SJW in the DemLegHump Media: They want a President who will Signal Virtue with every word he speaks and every act he takes (which is why they loved Obama so much). This is why the National Review crowd would rather have a Republican Presidential candidate who is Righteous but loses over one who isn’t and can win.
Trump isn’t Righteous. He has seen Righteous in the business world and has correctly deduced that it is a Loser. Trump is Cunning. As a result, he wins far more often than not. As President, the American people have benefited from the winning along with Trump. That’s why Trump has gotten More Stuff Done from a ‘conservative’ standpoint in two years than Reagan managed to get done in four, and is likely to continue winning.
When it comes to winning, I’ll pick Cunning over Righteous every time. People like Jay Norlinger need to go back to sucking their thumbs and leave governing to those who understand the process and can get the job done.

Overall the GOP continues to slightly outpace Democrats among the ultra rich, but most of the big conservative donors such as Charles and David Koch, Sheldon Adelson, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, Rupert Murdoch, and Irvine Chairman Don Bren are well into their seventies or in their eighties. The trend belongs, clearly, to the progressives. Between 1980 to 2016, support for Democrats from the 0.1 percent has tripled, and donors in the nation’s wealthiest zip codes overall now give more to Democrats than Republicans.

Victor Davis Hanson takes a look.
The bizarre academic term “intersectionality” likewise followed, suggesting that gays, feminists, and minorities were united in focusing on supposed white-privilege pathologies. Yet no one quite new how to calibrate all the competing claims of victimhood by race, class, gender, and sexual orientation — as if a white transgendered actor should merit more grievance points than a black impoverished lesbian versus an Egyptian immigrant female CEO or a gay Latino policeman. Such musings are not caricatures, but the logic of the preambles to the usual progressive politicking, when a politico such as Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama did not welcome a crowd as a collective of Americans but ticked off all the various identity-politics groups present, all with claims against the majority.
Unfortunately, “diversity” was never exactly defined — and perhaps could not be. The ad hoc buzzword now referred to all white people on one side who enjoyed supposedly innate skin-color-based privilege, set against almost everyone else — at least sort of.

The requirements of modern journalism are such that if you are writing anything about a state that is not one of the Deep Blue Coast states, you must take the approach of someone from civilization boating down the Zambezi river, observing the natives in their colorful native costumes doing colorful native things. Isn’t that amazing!
And, with respect to Texas, if you can sneak ‘cult’ into the headline somewhere, so much the better.

Eric S Raymond sees a cloud on the horizon.
ndeed, the obvious historical interpretation of this result is that this is where meritocracy got us. At the beginning of the Flat Century meritocrats had a lot of genetic outliers to uplift out of what they called the “deserving poor”; which is another way of saying that back then, the genetic potential for upward mobility was more widely distributed in lower SESes because it had not yet been selected out by the uplifters. This model is consistent with what primary sources tell us people believed about themselves and their peers.
But now it’s 2018. Poverty cultures are reaching down to unprecedented levels of self-degradation; indicators of this are out-of-wedlock births, rates of drug abuse, and levels of interpersonal violence and suicide. Even as American society as a whole is getting steadily richer, more peaceful and less crime-ridden, its lowest SES tiers are going to hell in a handbasket. And not just the usual urban minority suspects, either, but poor whites as well; this is the burden of books like Charles Murray’s Coming Apart. J. D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy, and the opioid-abuse statistics.

Given the reality of minority underachievement, black and Hispanic leaders had a choice: they could have focused relentlessly on self-help, in the tradition of Booker T. Washington, so that minority students became academically competitive, or they could play the race card and demand lowered standards. Almost all have chosen the second course. Minority advocates focus exclusively on the defense and extension of racial preferences; calls to crack the books are virtually nonexistent. The press is complicit in this swerve from personal responsibility by keeping the skills gap as far as possible off stage. And universities themselves would rather let stand the implication that they are somehow denying “access” to underrepresented minorities than reveal the extent of preferences, as demonstrated by Harvard’s fierce opposition to releasing anonymized admissions data in the ongoing discrimination lawsuit against it.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has announced steps it will take to continue decreasing the percentage of white students on campus.
The school’s white student population fell from 63 percent to under 55 percent from 2017 to 2011, but the administration says there “is still much work to do,” according to The College Fix.
Cal Poly SLO wants the school’s proportion of white students to come closer to parity with the state’s percentage, which sits at 39.7 percent.
They have to be careful not to fall the magic number of white students that causes schools to be good rather than failing.

If you sense a synthetic quality to the outrage greeting the nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court by President Trump, you aren’t mistaken. The Women’s March had its statement decrying the apocalypse to be wrought by the nominee before he (or she) was named yesterday. Once the announcement was made, the blank name was to be filled in by the Women’s March functionary. In the event, the functionary did a poor job of executing the task, first forgetting to fill in the blank and then misspelling the nominee’s name.

The case against patents can be summarized brieflfly: there is no empirical evidence that they serve to increase innovation and productivity, unless productivity is identifified with the number of patents awarded—which, as evidence shows, has no correlation with measured productivity. This disconnect is at the root of what is called the “patent puzzle”: in spite of the enormous increase in the number of patents and in the strength of their legal protection, the US economy has seen neither a dramatic acceleration in the rate of technological progress nor a major increase in the levels of research and development expenditure.
