A Columbia University student was angry with her sociology professor for saying it was appropriate to use the term negro when referring to people of color while discussing the 1960s. She wrote to the professor, explaining to him that negro was an offensive and outdated term, but he failed to adjust his vocabulary. “I didn’t pay attention in class after that,” the student, Maria Martinez, told The Columbia Daily Spectator.
And there you have the entire problem with American education, if not modern education in general, in a nutshell.
Students feel perfectly entitled to stop listening to a teacher when that teacher says something with which the student disagrees. The automatic question that arises is: What the hell are you in the class for if you’re not going to pay attention to the teacher? If you’re so smart, why are you in school at all?

But is there really such a thing as a ‘medieval film’, and if so, what defines it? In her book, Filming the Middle Ages, Bettina Bildhauer argues that medieval films should be considered a genre unto themselves, sharing a portrayal as a time of monks, death, sexual repression and violence; this demonization has its origins in the Reformation and the Enlightenment. But the accuracy (or lack thereof) of events and scenery aside, there are three characteristics which define a medieval film; non-linear time, a visual rather than a literate culture, and an anti-individualism that Bildhauer calls ‘pre-individualism’. This is relatively broad criteria for medieval films, and encompasses everything from The Name of the Rose to Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Chicago police have shot or tried to shoot more than 700 dogs since 2008, according to a Chicago Sun-Times investigation. The paper found none of those shootings resulted in discipline against the officers, even when courts found the shooting wrongful and the city had to pay damages to the dog’s owner.

Scott Pruitt is the greatest-ever Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. To be fair, though, the competition was never exactly stiff. The bar was set low right from the start, under the Nixon-era administrator William Ruckelshaus.
Ruckelshaus is best known for his decision to ban the use of the insecticide DDT in the US. This, in turn, led to a near-global ban which deprived the world of its most effective prophylactic against the malarial mosquito, arguably causing millions of unnecessary deaths.
But what was perhaps most shocking about Ruckelshaus’s decision was that it ran roughshod over science and due process. At the time, the EPA had just finished a seven-month hearing under Judge Edmund Sweeney concluding in a 9,000-page document that DDT was essentially harmless to humans and wildlife. Ruckelshaus decided to go with the green activists rather than the scientific evidence and banned it anyway.
This puts into perspective the liberal media’s vendetta against the EPA’s current administrator, Trump-appointed Scott Pruitt. If you believe the New York Times, for example, Pruitt is trying to “muzzle the scientific inquiry that for years has informed sound policy at an agency he seems determined to destroy.”
Perhaps there’s an element of truth in the last part. Since Nixon founded it in 1970, the EPA has grown into a mighty behemoth with more than 17,000 employees – many of them hardcore green activists opposed to the very notion of free markets and industrial civilization.
Say what you will about how much the Democrats have damaged this country, RINOs have been almost as bad.

In the past, I have often enjoyed Kevin Williamson’s essays. Even when I found them occasionally incoherent and cruel, I thought it hardly my business to object to a colleague’s writing. But I gather, under changed circumstances, such deference no longer applies, given that in Williamson’s very first column at The Atlantic he attacks both me, and in a backhanded way, his former employer National Review for publishing a recent article I wrote.
I am a great fan both of Victor Davis Hanson and of Kevin Williamson, and so I found this article to be of compelling interest. It is in precisely this sort of contention between persons with whom one would ordinarily expect to agree that one’s own views are more precisely refined and delineated.

A New York judge who is on probation for a drunk driving charge will receive an $11,700 raise to her salary although she has only worked one out of the past 214 days, according to a report.
Rochester City Court Judge Leticia Astacio will now be paid $187,200 instead of $175,500 due to a raise for all city judges across the state. The raise comes although Astacio has not been to work since Aug. 31, 2017, even though she was ordered by state Supreme Court Justice Craig Doran to return in February, Fox News reported.
Astacio, whose term is not up until 2024, was arrested in February 2016 after a state trooper found her car damaged. After a bench trial in August 2016, Astacio was found guilty of driving while intoxicated. Astacio was sentenced to three years of probation in July 2017 after violating her original probation.

Niall Ferguson scratches his head.
I was raised to believe in the equal rights of all people, regardless of sex, race, creed, or any other difference. That the human past was characterized by discrimination of many kinds is not news to me. But does it really constitute progress if the proponents of diversity resort to the behavior that was previously the preserve of sexists and racists?
Publishing the names and mugshots of conference speakers is the kind of thing anti-Semites once did to condemn the “over-representation” of Jewish people in academia. Terms such as “SausageFest” belong not in civil academic discourse but on urinal walls.
What we see here is the sexism of the anti-sexists; the racism of the anti-racists. In this “Through the Looking Glass” world, diversity means ideological homogeneity. “The whitesplaining of history is over,” declared another heated article by Satia last week. Hideous Newspeak terms such as “whitesplaining” and “mansplaining” are symptoms of the degeneration of the humanities in the modern university. Never mind the facts and reason, so the argument runs, all we need to know — if we don’t like what we hear — are the sex and race of the author.

In 2014 President Obama welcomed the influx of unaccompanied minors crossing our southwestern border daily. I wrote about it for the Weekly Standard in “Disorder at the border.” I thought the scenario derived from “the fevered dreams of a dystopian novel.”
I was referring, of course, to Jean Raspail’s Camp of the Saints (1973). Mac Owens extended my thoughts in his NR column “Camp of the Saints, 2014 Style?” In the novel, Mac recalled, “liberals and Christians foolishly embrace the idea that the onslaught of migrants should be welcomed into the wealth and comfort of Europe. Indeed, the French military is directed to attack those who seek to resist the horde.”
You saw it here first.
President Obama didn’t have to go that far, but he welcomed the horde. He sought to turn the invasion to his own uses. He didn’t much defend American national sovereignty in word or in deed. In his eyes, American national sovereignty is obsolete or undeserving of the president’s unambivalent support. As becomes more evident every day, more and worse is to come when the Democrats retake the presidency.

The Pakistani military has increased its censorship of Pakistani media identified as potentially troublesome. It has reached the point where any criticism of the military or Islam (and especially Islamic terror groups protected by the military) is punished, often by kidnapping or murder of repeat offenders. At the same time the military is using the media to create a new image of the Pakistani military. There are more pro-military videos available to show on TV and in movies theaters. TV shows and movies that make the military look good have an easier time getting made while those that criticize the military are increasingly rare.
