Theodore Dalrymple peeks behind the curtain.
The son of a friend of mine applied for a place at medical school and was turned down on the grounds that his personal statement was inadequate. I don’t know what was wrong with it; perhaps he employed incorrect old clichés rather than the correct new ones. Having the means to do so, my friend sent his son to a tutor who specialized in personal statements (every bureaucratic requirement is an economic opportunity for an ex-bureaucrat wanting to strike out for himself). No doubt the tutor in personal statements advised him to put in more about his passion for social justice and equality. At any rate, it worked and he was accepted.

When some goofy member of a white supremacist group–by the way, if you ever encounter a white supremacist, please hang on to him and give me a call, I’ve never met one–told news outlets that mass murderer Nikolas Cruz was a member of his organization, Democratic Party media jumped all over it. It was reported as fact, even thought there was no confirmation whatsoever that it was true.
The Associated Press was one Democratic Party organization that hurried to associate Cruz with “white supremacists,” in furtherance of its agenda. Now the AP has recanted:
A white nationalist appears to have lied to The Associated Press and other news organizations when he claimed that Florida school-shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz was a member of his obscure group.
Law enforcement officials have said they didn’t have any evidence to support the claim that Republic of Florida leader Jordan Jereb made in interviews with several news organizations.
“Too good to check” is the central principle of Democratic Party journalism. It would be hard to read a newspaper today, without absorbing false articles that liberal reporters preferred not to verify.

Light is made up of photons—speedy, tiny packets of energy. Typically, photons do not interact with each other at all, which is why when using flashlights “you don’t see the light beams bounce off each other, you see them go through each other,” explains Sergio Cantu, a Ph.D. candidate in atomic physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In new experiments, however, the physicists coaxed individual photons to cozy up to each other and link, similar to the way individual atoms stick together in molecules.

Actually, no, they don’t. They’re still preaching from the same old proglodyte playbook.
What is being celebrated here is the passing of the ideological baton to a younger generation of brain-laundry graduates. The article is for the purpose of reassuring the Chattering Class that they’re on the ‘right side of history’.
The ‘adults’ being ‘called to account’ aren’t the people pushing gun control — in what region of The Press is that message not dominant? — but rather the ‘adults’ opposing ‘gun control’ … although the pro-gun-control people never seem to get around to telling us why somebody might possibly think it reasonable to oppose ‘gun control’; they’re just Heretics and Sinners who must be burned at the stake.

As the price of housing continues to rise in many cities, one popular progressive policy idea to address it is inclusionary zoning. Inclusionary zoning requires that a certain percentage of units in a building be priced at below market, targeted at people who earn some fraction of the area median income. Often this set aside is required in exchange for density bonuses or other things the developer might want.
Portland passed one of these, and according to a report in the Portland Mercury, construction fell off a cliff.
Markets work the way markets work even when you don’t want them to.
Whenever government interferes with the action of a market, participants in that market take action that seems best in their own self-interest: either working around the government restrictions (a ‘black market’) if they can do so profitably, or deserting the market if they can’t work around the constraints. (Organized crime depends on such market constraints for their profits; their business model is working around government constraints on markets, and they are pretty good at it.)
Politicians never seem to learn that they can’t just pass a law and have everyone do what the politicians want them to do in the way that politicians want them to do it.

California left-wingers who want to densify cities to make them affordable are getting some push-back from other left-wingers who think density will push low-income people out of neighborhoods. A proposed bill to eliminate zoning in transit-rich areas in order to allow developers to build high-density housing would, say opponents, displace low-income families from neighborhoods with high rental rates in favor of high-income whites who can afford to pay for high-rise housing.
The opponents aren’t wrong. On one hand, increasing housing supply would seem to make housing more affordable. But affordable for whom? With housing prices in some California cities averaging more than $1,000 per square foot, building high-density housing that costs $400 to $500 a square foot would allow people who can afford that to find a place to live. But hardly anyone can afford that.

Nothing could be more pedestrian than a gay person, Olympian or otherwise, ‘slamming’ the Trump administration. This is not being a ‘pioneer’, but being a tag-along. Proglodytes have gone from ‘speaking truth to power’ to ‘speaking clichés to the whipping boy’. The witch-hunt for Heretics and Sinners must ever be stoked by moral preening and posing.
You will notice that the focus is on Mike Pence, and the reason for that is that they know as well as we do that Trump doesn’t give a shit whether a person is gay or not. Every attempt to portray Trump as ‘anti-gay’ falls to the ground in the face of the total lack of any evidence; you might as well say that Santa Claus is anti-broccholi.

When Attorney General Jeff Sessions advised people in pain to “take some aspirin” and “tough it out” during a speech in Tampa last week, the federal prosecutors in his audience laughed. Mitzie Katzen, who has suffered from complex regional pain syndrome since she was a teenager, had a different reaction.
“I was just floored,” Katzen says. “I could not believe what I was reading, and I thought that has to be somebody who has never experienced really severe pain for any length of time.” Katzen’s perspective on Sessions’ remarks illuminates the depravity of a policy that sacrifices the interests of patients like her in the name of fighting the “opioid epidemic.”
The people at tReason magazine are poster children for the sort of Progressives In A Clever Plastic Disguise of which ZMan so often complains. Apparently there is in the Constitution some invisible provision (probably in the same Zeroth Amendment that contains the Right to Smoke Weed and the Right For People Everywhere Outside Of America To Come Here) that gives an indefeasible right to any measure that might prevent somebody from experiencing anything unpleasant in life. The whiners aren’t all on the Left. (Hm. Is epigram.)
Yeah, pain sucks. I’ve been there. But getting hooked on a pharmaceutical and then spending your life ensuring that you can always have more sucks just as much.
Jeff Sessions’ job is to enforce the law. Consequently, he has an interest in any situation that might encourage people to break said law. This is a natural result of his job. Just because he isn’t willing to Whine Along With Mitzie doesn’t make him cruel, any more than Noticing the black people commit a lot more crimes per capital than white people makes one a racist.
Libertarianism in modern America has degenerated into the same arrested-adolescent pity party as progressivism, and its pretense of being the principled opposition to the Left is wearing very thin indeed.

In our disillusioning modern world, where it’s too easy to look up what life is actually like in the remote real places that used to serve our desire for utopias, Americans now apparently feel the need to believe in CGI movie fictions, such as Wakanda, a technologically advanced isolationist kingdom in northeastern Africa featured in the upcoming Marvel comic-book blockbuster Black Panther.

Paul Mirengoff at Powerline is delightfully dyspeptic today.
I had hoped that the idiotic left-wing outrage at Attorney General Sessions’ use of the term “Anglo-American law enforcement” would dissipate without making it into mainstream discussion. The fact that former President Obama has referred to the Anglo-American nature of our justice system seemed to support my hope.
No such luck. This morning, I heard NPR pretend there is a legitimate racism story here. So did ABC Newsand the New York Daily News. (To its credit, the Washington Post countered by trying in two stories to set the record straight).
Accordingly, I must reluctantly agree with Charles Cooke’s take on this pseudo-controversy: “We’re screwed.”
We’re screwed as a polity if we must pretend that our system of law isn’t what it actually is — Anglo-American — lest we be accused of racism.

The Other McCain is on the case.
Does everyone remember “TrigglyPuff,” the obnoxious feminist who repeatedly disrupted a 2016 event at the University of Massachusetts? While claiming to be a victim of oppression, Cora Segal was attending elite private Hampshire College ($63,512 a year, including room and board) and is, in fact, the daughter of a Harvard professor. Her sole claim to victimhood is her evident inability to say “no” to second helpings.
The phenomenon of privileged young people claiming to be oppressed by social injustice is a product of what Robert Hughes called the Culture of Complaint, “in which seemingly everyone claims victim status.” Since the election of President Trump, liberals have ludicrously compared Trump to Hitler, claiming that America is now a “fascist regime.” The absurdity of these claims is apparent to anyone with two eyes and a brain, so why do liberals keep playing this make-believe game?

The intersection of trial lawyer opportunism, climate orthodoxy, and political expediency has become a busy and increasingly perilous place.
Over the summer, Richmond, Marin County, Oakland, San Francisco, San Mateo County, Imperial Beach, Santa Cruz, and Santa Cruz County in California filed suit against ExxonMobil and other energy companies for damages to coastal property and infrastructure caused from climate change-related increases in sea levels. The legal foundation for holding individual companies responsible for a planetary climate phenomenon is far from solidified so the companies are sure to fight long and hard to avoid losing a war of financial attrition.
